Ekelund Family Bralanda, Dalsland, Sweden

Hello all,
I am looking for any information on an Ekelund family living in the Bralanda parish in Dalsland, Sweden in the 1860s. My great, great-grandfather was Charles August Ekelund born April 21, 1864 in Bralanda. He emigrated to the United States in 1881. In 1888 he married a Mary Peterson, also from Dalsland, who had emigrated to the US in 1883. The family settled in Hennepin county and Aitkin county in Minnesota. Charles had five brothers who I believe also came to the United States and settled in Minnesota. Their names were Axel, Robert, Edward, Harry, and Frances (possibly Frans). My understanding is that the original family name was not Ekelund, but it was something more like Mood, or Mud, or perhaps Modh. I understand that around the 1860s Sweden was going through a period of abolishing the patronymic naming system, so many people may have been changing their names. If anyone has information on Ekelunds from Dalsland or Bralanda, or any info on the changing of the name I would appreciate it. I am in the process of ordering death records for my great, great-grandfather that will hopefully tell me who his parents were and then I can order the parish records from LDS.

Thanks! I'll be happy to share any info I can find with everyone.

Sara Ekelund

EKELUND IN MEXICO

My name is Claudia Riva-Palacio, and I live in
Mexico City. I am making research on my great-
great grandfather who came from Sweden
to Mexico by 1900 and his name was Ekelund.

I would appreciate if somebody happen to know
of this person. We know very little
about him. Apparently his name was John
or the Swedish for John. His daughters were named
Olga and Betty. (In fact my mother is named
Betty after this ancestor) He was killed during
the Mexican revolution by 1915 and he was
an horticultor.

If you know something I would appreciate
your writing to me to the following e-mail address:
cachou@infosel.com

Thank you very much

Regards,

Claudia Riva-Palacio

Ekelund Galveston

I talked to Oscar Ekelund, he said his father was Oscar Sr. whos father was
John, whos 6 siblings were
Gus who married Mary Walstien (possibly the father of Gus who married Thelma Hicks)
William Patrick (drowned as youth)
Emil m. Ella Mosier
Barbara m. Joe Haymen
Anna m. Charles Stousland
Mary Amelia m. Edward B. Matthews (my GGP)
they were the children of
Oscar (Osker) William Ekelund of Stokholm Sweden and Anna Barbara Clausen Clark (window) of Alsaice Lorainne Germany (at that time). Possibly Jewish!

According to Oscar Jr. (70 years old)
Oscar William was in Mobile Alabama before the Civil War, he may have jumped ship. He served in the Mississippi Regiment as a medic. He owned a Saloon and was said to have had his big toe on his rt. foot shot off. There are suspicions he had a family there then fled to Galveston. He and Anna are burried in Galveston. Oscar has the family Bible given to his grandfather by Anna. I made arraingements to meet with him next week.
If anybody would like me to ask questions please e-mail at monteguts@aol.com
