My grandmother's maiden name was Elam and she was born in Mississippi. Most of her relatives moved to the northern states. I believe mostly IN. She would always tell the story about her brothers Arthur, Shunk, Floonk or her sisters Bee or Mary. If any of these names sound familiar, send me an e-mail. Would like to stay in touch.

Elam Picture cir. 1900 from Family Reunion

I have a old family picture of an Elam Family Reunion which I am guessing dates between 1890 and 1910. My Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother are the only inividuals I can indentify for certain. My Great Grandmother is Sarah Alma Elam Dodd (1876-1956). Her parents were David W. Elam (1852-1911)and Emily P. Boston (1842-1918); Grandparents on the Elam side were Richard Hurt Elam (1815-1860) and Lockey Taylor (1820-1856). This Elam family has been recorded in North Carolina, Illinois and finally in Greene County Missouri (southern part of the state). I am looking for help in identifying the individuals in this photo. Please contact me and I will email the scan of the original that I have in my possession. Any help would be appreciated. Please let me know how big a file you can receive and how you are related to the Elams.

I look forward to hearing from some of you!

Justin Walker
jwalker797@sbcglobal.net
jwalker797@gmail.com

Elams of TN via VA

Seeking information on Robert Elam who came to now Chesterfield Co., Va around 1635-8. His daughter Ann married her cousin Gilbert Elam Sr. Their son Gilbert Jr. sired William? who sired Richard? who sired Joseph W. This is sketchy and I have very little information to substantiate it. Joseph W. had a son John Wooldridge born around 1810 in Chesterfield Co., VA, married Mary Elizabeth Thweatt in Jan. 1835 and moved to Shelby Co., TN. I would greatly appreciate any information about this line. I think Robert Elam came from England (1635-8)and was a boy traveling with his family. Please e-mail me directly any information and also if I can help you.

Earliest know Elam's to America

I am researching my Elam line in England. It would appear that per the igi, William Elam(written as Eliim) and his wife Eleanor were married 1737 and that my ancestry runs through his son, Thomas.
However, upon a closer look at the batch no. or film number the igi information seems to be found in some sort of record out of North Carolina. So, either the film is incorrect or there is a person who names William and Eleanor in a document of some sort out of North Carolina. I will be ordering up the film, but I am curious to know if any one knows who the first Elam(Ellam) to America was and what year this immigration might have happened.
Regards,
Susan

I challenge every male with the Elam surname to go to familytreedna.com and register to take a YDNA test. It doesn't hurt a bit. My husband (not an Elam) took the test at 73. I have seen some extremely good paper trails crumble with the test results. Do you have what it takes to take the test and prove your paper trail? Or will you continue with your little paper trail and hope you are right?

Lolene

ELAM, JOHN (?-?)

ELAM, JOHN (?-?). John Elam, one of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred settlers, was in the Austin Texas colony as early as April 20, 1824, when he voted for the Baron de Bastrop as deputy to the Constituent Congress of the eastern division of the Provincias Internas. Elam's title to a league of land was granted on August 7, 1824. The census of March 1826 listed him as a single man aged between twenty-five and forty. In October 1830 William Munson advertised lumber for sale on the land granted to Elam, and on December 15, 1830, the ayuntamiento of San Felipe de Austin declared the Elam league on the Brazos River vacant because he had abandoned the country without improving the land.

ARE YOU RELATED YO THIS ELAM DESCENDANT?
We were trying to get information about him to write an obituary to post on the obituaries message board considering that he is a Pioneer Settler of Texas and wondered if any of his relatives might be looking for him or had further information on him. Thank you.

Does anyone know what happened to Lucinda Elam who married James Claybrook? I loose her after 1860...also...did Mary Elam marry John W. Williams?
Has anyone heard of Susanne R. Williams? She married James Claybrook in 1865 in Gibson? I'm wondering if it was the same James that was married to Lucinda .... Thank you
I have found a John W. Elam from 12th district, Shelby, tenn. B.1813. In a1860 census he was an owner of 52 slaves. I would be interested in knowing what he did. He was married to a Mary and they had 6 children. One of whom was named John H and he may have been the father of my great grandfather Henry Edward Elam of Calif. Love to hear from anyone who may have more information

I am trying to locate any info on Willard Elam, born in 1924 I think he was born in Missouri. The 1930 census has him living with his father Marvin Elam, his step-mother Myrtle and I believe with two half brothers. My husband would be his half brother also. Willard is Marvins son by a first marriage, Myrtle is second, and my husbands mother was third. I don't know anything about Willard except what is in the census. Anyone out there have any info Thanks

My Great grandparents were Benjamin Oakley Sublett and Kathryn "Kate" Elam of Morgan & Magoffin Co's KY late 1800's. Other families asso w/them were Craig, Arnett, Gardner and Easterling, etal. Kate's dad, Robert F. Elam, (widowed?) married to Serena Prichard/Pritchard and had an entire other family. I believe that Kate's mother, Mary Craig Elam was in the family of Easterlings, near Robt.F.Elam's family, in 1870(?)maybe. There were also Oakley/Perrys, involved in this family tree. I am posting as many names which relate to them and the area, during the 1800's. I believe the Elams and Subletts may have been together from the VA Huguenot colony times. Please post to the msg boards, as I'm not finding much on these interesting families at all and they were among the early KY families who settled KY, when the "west" reopened.
SAMcClellan
artogo4u@yahoo.com

Richard Elam who was a member of (ready for this?) Skinguarter Church and held in said Church the offices of Clerk, Treasurer and Deacon. He was much esteemed by all that knew him"
I do not believe that I have read the church name correctly.
Anyone familiar with the church names and able to provide me some suggestions?

I will furnish free copies of this very old photo to interested relatives and descendants of this couple. It was taken in Fairbury, NE in the late 1800s, I believe. James Sr. and Rebecca Elam were probably the parents of Jesse who was born about 1839 in Kentucky. Margaret's name may also have been Elam and she may be the dau. Jeremiah and Jan Elam. Jesse and Margaret were married in 1856 in Morgan Co., KY and had a son Samuel, b. abt. 1865. Samuel's children included Mary, Maude, Ruth, Grace Alice and Winifred. In 1900 Jesse, Margaret and family lived in Rice Co., KS.

William Elam c1857 from Louisiana, then Texas, then Arkansas

I am looking for information about William Perry Elam of Louisiana. 1900 United States Federal Census Record in Justice Precinct 1, McLennan, Texas, shows William P was born in Feb 1857, and is 44 years old. He was born in Louisiana, his father was born in Louisiana and his mother was born in Alabama. William is married to Hattie, 30, who was born in May 1871, in Louisiana and both her parents were born in Louisiana. They lived in Texas, and later in Arkansas. I believe Hattie's maiden name was Dillard. I am having trouble finding anything on either of them. Can you point me in the right direction?

Richard and Susannah Elam of Campbell Co., Va

Several years ago I corresponded with some Elam list members regarding Richard Elam and his wife who I believe was Susannah Lewellen. I now suspect that Richard was the son of John Elam (b abt 1708 d. abt 1788 Chesterfield Co., Virginia) John left no will and his estate was settle by his son Samuel Elam. John was married to Martha Goode. I have no definite proof that Richard is the son of John Elam and Martha Goode, but the naming patterns of Richard and Susannah Lewellen Elam's children suggest a connection. I would welcome correspondence with other descendants of Richard Elam and Susannah Lewellen regarding this new line of specualtion. Thank you, Gregory McReynolds {Please email me directly.)

I am a decendent of Elam (sorry no first name) and Patience Dennis. They had a son Edward Elam b. 1790 in Overton, TN. He later married Mary Elizabeth Harmon and they had six children, Patience b. 1821, Ferriby b, 1822, Mary Polly b. May 25 1823, Nancy b. 1824, James b. 1831, and John b. 1834. There could be more that I am not aware of. Anyone with information, I would like to hear from you.

Regards,
Elaine

Southern Christian Academy CSA Memorial ? Pleasant Mound Public Cemetery, Dallas Co., Tx

I am trying to find out more information about 4 CSA markers at Pleasant Mound Public Cemetery

I contacted Southern Christian Academy and they do not have any records that show why these CSA markers were placed at Pleasant Mound Public Cemetery (Scyene Rd and Buckner in Dallas). They said it may have done as a memorial for the CSA Veterans . There are several other members of the 6th Scyene buried there. None of the men below are listed in the cemetery book as burials.

There is a Flag pole beside these stones that at one time I have been told flew the Confederate "Stars and Bars".On the flag pole is a small sign that says “Property of Southern Christian Academy”

Isaac N. Terry and James Monroe Leach are buried at Abby Frost Cemetery in Mesquite. A 1966 extraction of the tombstones does not list Monroe Leach’s tombstone but it is shown on another one taken in 1999, when it was “found” and repaired is unknown. A Dallas Morning News (Monday, June 13,1983) artical states that another stone was found and repaired by Cub Scout Pack 149 but does not mention Leach's stone.

TERRY, Isaac N.
29 Jun 1836 Texas Pvt 6 Scyene Co. C. S. A.
12 Oct 1889

LEACH, Monroe
28 Sep 1818
22 May 1881
Texas Pvt 13 Brig Militia C. S. A.

Betherum and Elam are brother-in-laws and are thought to have been buried at the now “lost” Elam family Cemetery, that is thought to have been located near 175 (Hawn Freeway) and Jim Miller

BETHERUM, Benjamin F.
24 Feb 1824 (Franklin)
5 Mar 1872
Texas Pvt 6 Co 13 Brig C. S. A.

ELAM, Benjamin F.
26 Apr 1834 (Franklin)
21 Feb 1900
Texas 4 Cpl. 13 Brig Scyene Co. C. S. A.

I have been told there was a fifth marker but I did not find it the last time I visited the cemetery a year ago this month. The city now mows the cemtery but provides little as far as other upkeep so it may have sunk below the surface.

James Monroe Leach is my great-great-grandfather. I am just curious about the history of this "memorial".

Need most reliable up to date early 1600-1700 Va. Elam genealogy

Help! There are so many mistakes & variations of the early 1600-1700 Henrico Co.,Va. Elams on the internet, that I really don't know where to turn to.
Is there anyone out there in the Elam genealogy world, that would know where I might find the most reliable up to date genealogy of those early Henrico Co.,Va. Elams.
I'm especially trying to find the Elam ancestry of Elizabeth Bowman wife of Jeffrey Robertson I. Her mother was Elizabeth Elam wife of John Bowman.
Elizabeth (Elam) Bowman was supposedly the daughter of John, Martin or Robert Elam whose wife was Elizabeth Ann Bolling, & John, Martin or Robert were supposedly sons of Gilbert Elam Jr. b. ca. 1659 Henrico Co.,Va. d. 1697 Henrico Co.,Va. & wife Mary Hatcher
but can't find any reliable sources for any of the above generations. Is there anyone out there who really knows?
Thanks for any help.

I am seeking information on the following people:

William KERBY is listed as a 5 year old stepson in the household of T.H. NEWSOM (1860 Federal Census for Greene County, AR - Greensboro P.O.) William's place of birth is listed as Tennessee. I believe he may be the son of William Kerby and Sarah WEBSTER m. July 12, 1854 in White County, TN.

I believe (this) William married Mary STEPHENS on February 19, 1877 (Greene Co AR marriage book 2, pg 95) and that they are the parents of Albert Lee KIRBY.

Albert Lee KIRBY is listed as a 9 year old orphan in the household of Wm. R. ELEM/ELAM (1900 Federal Census, Greene Co, Cache, AR). Albert married Hettie MAXBERRY on October 20, 1912 in Lake City, Craighead Co, AR.
E.E. Elam; b. 1863; TN, AL

I am trying to trace the family of E. E. Elam. E. E. married Carrie Mai Miller in Rutherford County, TN, in 1887, and I believe they had 3 children before Carrie died by the 1900 census. There is a widowed Edward E. Elam in Calhoun County, Alabama, in 1910 with children—Ethel, b. 1887; Virginia, b. 1891; and a son, Ariel, b. 1893. This location fits with other members of Carrie’s family. I cannot find the family in 1910, but there is an Edward Elam in Davidson County, TN, in 1920, who may be a match. If so, he appears to have remarried a Mary Nella/Mary Nell/or Mary N. There is a daughter, Virginia, who appears to be the correct age, plus 2 more children—Edward, Jr., age 15, and Thomas, age 11. There may have been a 2nd wife between Carrie and Mary N.

If any of these descendants sound familiar, I would appreciate information.
Cheryl Parsons

We begin with Harley Andrew Jackson Elam, currently alive. Born in Pomeroyton, KY 1936. Raised in Frenchburg, KY area. Joined the Air Force and traveled world. Married Edna Moore of West Liberty, KY and fathered Anthony Brad Elam, Serena (Elam) Whitehair, and Tina (Elam) Hufford.

His parents were: Rollie Herbert Elam and Virgie(Lawson) Elam.

Rollie's parents: John Harve Elam (1872 - 1962) and Stella (Cassidy) Elam (1878-1951)

Virgie's parents: Andrew Jackson Lawson (of Virginia Cherokee descent)
(d. 1933) and Mary (Williams) Lawson (d.1956). Virgie had a brother named Ishmael Lawson.

That's as far was we've been able to trace. Initial KY counties of interest are Mennifee, Morgan, Wolf, Montgomery, and Clark. We have reason to believe Andrew Jackson Lawson was a Cherokee from Virginia, not NC or GA. There appears to be no connection with the Trail of Tears Cherokee or those living in NC.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, y'all!

DEW

Sally Elam is supposedly my 4th great grandmother. She married William Gorden in 1751. Problem is everything I can find out abut Sally and William is they had no children. Other sources say they had four sons. Perhaps I have the wrong William Gorden. John Gordon who married Verlinche Wooldridge is my 3rd great grandfather and William's son, I don't know if Sally is his mother. This took place is Virginia around the late 1700s to mid 1800s.

Mary Lacey

Elam CORRECTION

I have discovered there was no George Washington Elam Sr., as I formerly posted. My forefathers were George Washington Elam(born in Illinois) and his Father Joel Elam (born in Virginia). If you have any information on them please let me know. GW Elam married Eliza Jane Burris and I believe Joel married Frances who birthed George. If you know the burial places of the wives I would appreciate the info. Joel is buried in Concord Cemetery-Iowa and George is burid in Nodaway, Missouri.
