Charles S. Elam, KY

Charles S. Elam (1835 -1917) married Sarah Keeton (1835 - 1900) on 23 Sept. 1860. I show his father as Richard Elam and a possible Sarah ____ as his mother. Trouble is: I can't find Richard or Sarah even in census reports. 1850 Census for Wayne Co. KY shows Charles and sister Sarah living with Benjamin F. Coffey family. Another sister, Nancy, was living with a Worsham family. Does anyone know what happened? who were the parents? grandparents? Charles' and Sarah's daughter Martha Jane Elam was my husband's paternal grandmother, married to William Dobbs Jr.

Hello - Sorry taking so long to get back to you. I think you contacted me some years ago about this via postal mail. My husband's father was Gustava Adolph Epp and his father was Jacob(Yakob)Epp, who emigrated from Germany and lived in Trenton, OH. when my husband was very young. We don't know what part of Germany the family came from. I've always been curious to know. Gustava (Gus) had brothers, William who lived in Indiana and Walter who lived in Hamilton, OH. He had several sisters, Emma, Dorothy and Martha.
Let me know if any of this was helpful. Thanks, Edith

Just found.
From The Virginia Genealogist,Washington:J F Dorman, 1957-2006 (Online database New England Ancestors Organization. New England Historic Genealogy Society.2009)

p 22
Vol 2

Power of attorney from Martin Elam of Wilkes to Francis Barnes of Charlotte Co, Va., to sell 500 acres on Great Bluestone Creek in Charlotte, part of tract William Elam lived on and deeded by him to said Martin Elam, adjoining lands of Almon and Edward Elam. John Sims and Frederick Sims, witnesses; 28 April 1790. EE 139

On the same page other information indicates another Charlotte Co resident was in Wilkes Co, Ga.

I'll be interested in seeing which of the Martin Elams this is. I think it may be "the other" Martin as far as my research is going. Since the lands are adjoining, I'm assuming these are brothers, sons of a William, or at least heirs of him.

Lolene

Elizabeth Elam Corey Braislin
May 1936 – August 2008

Jacksonville (Oregon) lost a very gracious lady when Liz Braislin passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 16, following a brief bout with cancer.

Born in Kansas City, Kansas, to Lorin and Lorraine Elam, Liz moved with her family to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in 1946 where her father worked on the Manhattan Project. The family later settled in Santa Ana, California.

Following her graduation from Garden Grove High School, Liz went to work for GMAC. She was soon transferred to Pasadena, CA, which became her home for the next 40 years.

Liz always focused on improving herself and her community. While working for GMAC during the day, she taught ballroom dancing for Arthur Murray Dance Studios and attended Pasadena City College at night, subsequently completing her B.A. at Pepperdine University. She married Jack Corey in 1962, and managed his architectural firm for several years while lending her organizational skills to local non-profits.

She was a long-time docent at the Gamble House in Pasadena, eventually becoming President of the Gamble House Docents Council. Visitors always enjoyed her architectural tours of this preeminent Green & Green designed Craftsman “bungalow” built for the Gambles of Procter & Gamble.

In the late 1970s, Liz joined the staff of the Pacific Asia Art Museum, one of only four institutions in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to the arts and culture of Asia and the Pacific Islands. For 17 years she served as Director of Volunteers and Events, becoming responsible for over 300 volunteers and playing a major role in the museum’s annual Festival of the Harvest Moon.

After retiring, Liz moved in 1996 with her husband John Braislin to Jacksonville, Oregon, where she became known as a wonderful hostess, community activist, and “volunteer extraordinaire.” During their first year in Jacksonville, 168 friends enjoyed the overnight hospitality of the Braislins.

While preferring to be “low profile,” Liz could be counted on to get things done. She was Treasurer and Board member of the Jacksonville Boosters Foundation and active on many Boosters Club committees. She “flew the flags” on major holidays, co-chaired the Garage Sale pricing committee, was casting director for “Meet the Pioneers’ cemetery tours, and helped tend Britt Gardens. In 2006, she was Jacksonville’s “Booster of the Year.”

Liz and the family dog Cinnamon were the top fund raisers for the Jacksonville Woodlands annual Hike-A-Thon for several years. Liz was also active in the Jacksonville Garden Club, producing programs, hosting “potting parties,” and manning sales booths. She volunteered with the SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) reading program and served as a CASA (Court appointed Special Advocate) for Jackson County.

She was always a pleasure to be with and her company was much in demand. She maintained a schedule that included clubs, bridge groups, exercise classes, travel, and social activities. However, if a friend or family member needed help, Liz gave generously of her time and skills.

A friend summed it up well: “Liz Braislin was a class act!”

Liz is survived by her husband John Braislin, her sisters Susan Lack and Linda Elam, her brother Lorin Elam, and her nephew and niece Roger Brazil and Yvonne Fengler whom she helped raise. She will be dearly missed by countless family members and close friends.

Her ashes will be interred in the family plot in Fallon, Nevada. A Celebration of Liz’s Life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, at the Jacksonville Presbyterian Church, 425 Middle Street in Jacksonville. Memorial contributions can be made to the Jacksonville Boosters Foundation, P.O. Box 81, Jacksonville, OR 97530, or to the Jacksonville Woodlands Association, P.O. Box 1210, Jacksonville, OR 97530.
Drury D. Elam

I am trying to figure out if Mary Ellen ELAM is Drury & Phebee (May) ELAM's daughter. According to her Death Certificate, her father is listed as D. Elam born in Indiana, and her mother is listed at Margaret May born in Missouri. Could Phebee be a nickname for Margaret?

Mary Ellen was born on April 13, 1848 in Appanoose County, Iowa and died on July 25, 1925 in Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa. I have found possible census' from 1856 and 1860 listing Drury, Phebe, Mary as well as siblings, but need to prove this is them.

Mary Ellen is the wife of Robert Bates FARRIS. Robert was born on October 16, 1837 in Scott County, Indiana. He died on February 15, 1922 in Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa.

Also, my late father-in-law was told that in an old family Bible it written that Mary was a Muskogee Indian...I have yet to prove this since Mary was born and raised in Iowa.

Thanks in advance.

I am searching for information about this lady who, according to the 1911 England census, was living were her husband, two children, and mother-in-law in Richmond, Surrey, England. Her husband was Edward Descou Dudley Vallance Elam. Her mother-in-law was called Carina Descou, widow of Peter Descou, both of whom were born in Ghent in Belgium. After the 1911 census she drops off the records and I am trying to find when she died?
