Hi Phil, Hi Andrew

I have a James Eland born 1860 in Cockermouth. 1881 he married Hannah Greener in Whitehaven. As far as I know they had following children: Mary; Florence May;Joseph;Jane;Hannah;John T(Jack);Robert;James and Sara -they were all born in either Whitehaven or Distington.

The family left the UK in 1904. Voyage was Liverpool to New York and they eventually settled in Pennsylvania.

Just last week I requested a marriage certificate for James Eland and Hanna Greener since I don't have a lot of info to the Elands prior to coming to the USA. Do you maybe see a connection?

Regards
Stephanie

Hi Andrew, although this reply to your post on Ancestry is nearly 9 years late !, I think I have some useful info for you.

We are related - I think you are my 2nd cousin, as my mum (Evelyn Singleton, nee Eland) was your dad's 1st cousin and we ( I have a twin brother called Jeffrey) used to visit your family when I was a teenager - did you live in Park Street in Accrington? Was your mum called Mary? Mum used to call your dad Jack and had mentioned that he was born on the Carmania, on the voyage back from America.

I have been doing family history research for about 4 years, so you started before me and may have got a lot farther. I have gone back with the Eland name to George EALAND (born around 1796 in Bridgefoot near Cockermouth).

Please do get in contact with me.
Do you subscribe to the Ancestry website?

Regards
Phil (Philip) Singleton

I am researching my Eland ancestors of Thrapston and Kettering in Northampton. Can anyone tell me where the Eland and Eland Bank was in Northampton. It was a private bank and I have been told it went bust, but I don't know where it was. I do know that it was in operation from around 1859 to about 1885, maybe longer. My ancestors names were: George Eland c1800, Stephen Eaton Eland c1800, Robert Fowler Eland c1826 Thrapston and Arthur Robert Eland born 1854 Thrapston - They were all Bankers. I would be glad of any information, no matter how small.

Hello Paula,
This could be a stretch, but my GGGgrandparents were William McCartney Campbell (born 1794 Scotland) and Susanna Eland (born 1861 Lancashire). One of their daughters, Anne Campbell (born 1831 Yorkshire) married Jonathan Bell of Cumberland; my GGgrandparents. Their first 4 children were born 1854-1863 in Lancashire while the last two were in Yorkshire. Their 3rd-born, Mary Susanna Bell and husband Austin John Cross (b: 1851 Liverpool) were my great grandparents.

All my Elands so far are from Yorkshire, but the Bells are pretty evenly split among Yorkshire, Lancashire and some in Cumberland. I don't have a James Bell or Mary Eland specifically listed (perhaps just YET). But there seems to be an awful lot in common here and I know at least "Eland" was not as usual a name as the others. Am still working on this line and if any of the above rings any "Bells" (pun intended) with you or anyone else checking here, would love to discuss it further. I have plenty more details. Good Luck!

OH! I just sent the above note in response to you on another Bulletin, but that one referred to JAMES Bell while this one mentions JOHN Bell as Mary Ann Eland's spouse. I have FIVE of THEM; 4 from Cumberland and 1 from Yorkshire. I also have a William Campbell Bell (b: 1859 Lancashire) and a William Eland Bell (b: 1899 in Yorkshire). Hope these additional details will help.

Sincerely yours, Shari Hogan
Funnily enough, my name is actually Matthew Eland. I'm currently studying at John Moores University in England. My grandmother, May Eland, could maybe have some information of use to you. If you ever need a hand, just email me and I could help you. My father, David Eland, a teacher in a Liverpool school, could throw some clues your way.
As for us, we live, as you've probably guessed, near Liverpool in England. Although we are desended, I think from the Yorkshire family.

Jon,

My information (taken from a family tree on Ancestry) is that George's parents were Leonard Eland (20/10/1720 - 1781) who was born in Howden and Mary Jennings born in 1730 who married on 13/11/1750. Leonard's parents were Thomas Eland and Elizabeth ? both born in Howden C1695.

I would be interested in what other info you particulary if youi have anything linking the Elands back to Elland. Abel Swan Eland (1834 to 1910) was my great, great grand father and through other info I have picked up on this site I have traced the Elands back to Thomas who was born C1695 in Howden. I would be interested to hera about what info you have.

Hi,

I will see what I can find out about your John Eland. The 1861 census for Yorkshire, Gribthorpe shows Ann, age 57 a widow with the following children:
George C?(mar)28;
Able S?(unmar)27;
Knapton H(unmar)23;
Ellen E(unmar)24;
Eugenie Dowthwaite?(grand dau)3.
I do not think I am related to your Knaptons, but I am very interested in learning what I can about the other Knapton familes in the area.

Alan Knapton

I am aware of the family you mention, however the your Eugenie is new to me, assumed daug of - Thomas and Ann Elizabeth Douthwaite (Eland)

Regarding Knaptons, was born 1803 to Charles, who was thought to live 1770 to 1852 - and I believe Charles' parents were William Knapton and Elizabeth Hassell (m.1765)

I am still trying to find how my family tree links in with that of the 'Elands of Bubwith' that are already documented - knowing about how the Brownbridge name came to be in the family still interests me though!

Thanks, jon

John Eland, son of George

I'm still trying to get specifics on a John Eland (d.1847, m.1829 - Ann Knapton)

John is my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather and was born in or around Bubwith sometime around 1800.

One of his sons was John Brownbridge Eland, so we suspect that his father (George) was the George Eland who m. Elizabeth Brownbridge in 1794. If this is the case does anyone know anything about this family or how they tie in with the other Bubwith Elands?
