Dear friend. All of Elander`s are not from Sweden. Forinstance Donna and I found our origin. Our ancestors are from Finland. And at Ellis Iland, they often wrote the name how it was pronounced. So You can be Ilander, witch is the pronounced name. And my ausralian cousins are of course pronounced "Ailanders" I hope you find your origin

Judy. Just read this post from a few months ago. I was wondering if only the first son was listed as born to first wife.

Johannes is my grandfather and I am doing research on this family. My mother believes that his mother had died as well as he had spoken of a stepmother.

Could you suggest how I might find birth records?

Thanks for any help you can provide.
Josef Emanuel is listed as "Mannens barn i 1:a giftet s." which means "the husband's child in first marriage son" (That makes awkward English but he was a son of the husband and the husband's first wife, who presumably died.)

Judy

No matter how rare a name might be in the U.S., it is not usually so rare that you can provide **just** a name and not any other details. ;-)

I see this Johan Edvard on the Emibas CD. Emibas was made from registrations in the Swedish parish to go to a foreign country. It is about 75% complete. Do the dates match?

Post 894056

Elander, Johan Edvard
Son = son.
You never really realize how many of us are actually out there until you check websites like this or Facebook. My maiden name is Elander and I know that Edward Elander (my grandfather's grandfather) came from Sweden and was married to a Bessie Elizabeth Olson. I also know that there is actually a printing company in Sweden by the name of Elander. I know that from what I have been told that they are part of my family line. My grandfather, his father, and so forth have worked as printers. My grandfather actually had a printing company in Mn until his stroke in 1977 when he could no longer do it.

My grandfather's name was Elander but had been 'Americanized' upon entry to America from Sweden...had originally been 'Erlensen'. Searching from any relations as I know Elander is NOT a very common name. His family settled in the Westfield, Mass area around Boston. My grandfather married Mary Goddard.
Anyone out there?

Somebody say Wadena?
I've gotta be a cousin or something! Jospeh would be my great grandpa I think (possibly skipping a generation). My grandpa was Roy and my dad is also Roy (but everyone knows him as Bill(y)).
If you're on Facebook, there is a pretty sizeable group of Elanders from all all over the world! It's named "ELANDERS UNITE!"

Joanne:
Seems we are cousins! My grandfather was John Elander, from Wadena, who moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba in 1932. I will call my mother, Monnie, to see if we have a photo of Uncle Knut from years past. I know we have of some of the brothers. I also have a scan of the brothers and their parents in front of their home in Sweden when the boys were young, before their mother died and their father remarried.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Lynz

Hannah Elander, b 1893 Sweden, d 1987

I have found a newspaper clipping in a box of my childhood things. I cannot imagine why I have this clipping, but then again I don't know why I found an old pair of socks with toes of them in that box, either! I am not related to the Elanders in any way, but here's the text of the clipping, in case it helps someone someday:

written around 1972, apple harvest season
probably from Yakima Herald Republic
by Ron Kaye

"Even at 79, she puts in day picking"

Hanna Elander is 79, a great-grandmother three times over and an apple picker.

Each day at 6 a.m. Mrs. Elander rises. She is out in the family-owned orchard by 7 a.m. to begin the day's picking.

I've really never been too good an apple picker," Mrs. Elander says.

But her granddaughter-in-law, Judy Elander, says talk like that is just modesty. "Why, she picks as well as any of us - four or more bins a day."

The elderly, though sprightly, Mrs. Elander also helped thin trees during the summer.

The only problem she faces working in the orchards is a tendency to vertigo up on the ladders. "But I've always had a bit of trouble with vertigo on ladders," she said. "I guess I'll just have to live through it."

Mrs. Elander was born in Sweden in November 1983 and moved to Seattle in 1914. She settled in Yakima in 1931, buying the family ranch at Zier and Stein roads. Her husband died six years ago.

Despite her age, Mrs. Elander is still making big plans. "I've made up my mind I'll be 100 yeras old," she said.

In fact, she said, since she was around for the turn of the century, "it might not be a bad idea if I were here for the year 2000."

My husband's maternal grandfather was a Carl Gustav(Gus) Elander who came to the Everrett Wa. area from Sweden ,probably about 1885. He married Maude Washburn in that area about 1905. He had one daughter(Ruth) who was my husband's mother. Gus died in either Nevada or Ca in 1933. Does any of this sound familiar? Gus was a construction worker and moved around a lot. Would like to get in touch with you. Shirley

Carl Gustav may be a cousin. I have been finding many deadends. I will share this with my sister as she is helping with the search. Contact me personally at tbagel@pacifier.com if you have more information and want to see if they match up. Donna

My paternal greandfather was John Elander. His parents were Emanual and Fredriika Elander. There other Elanders which came to Oregon before my grandfather. I believe they were his Uncles or cousins. There is voters records of a John Elander in Seaside, Oregon. This record is dated 14/13/1914 and held at the Court House in Astoria, Oregon. It furter states he was retired. Age 58. Immegrated from Sweden and naturalized on 8/4/1896. The naturalization records are being shifted to the Oregon State Archives in Salem, Oregon. I will try to find them later.

There is also record of a C. Elander on the same page and date of this voters record. He is a laborer. Age 55. Came from Sweden. Naturalized on 2/24/1901. He also lived in Seaside, Oregon at the time.

Family history has that all the Elanders came to the Oregon via Canada. Perhaps we are searching for the same people.
I am looking for relatives of my maternal grandfather. His name was John Elander and he was born in 1886 in Sweden.

Brothers: Jonas, Knute, ??, Conrad, (Granddad), Simon, Benjamin (who died as a child).
My mother believes that his family ran a lumber business in Avistabruk(??) Grandad's mother died when he was 12, and his father remarried. Granddad came to Canada in 1903 (?) with his younger brother Simon who was 15. I believe that all his older brothers were already in Canada.
I do not have the names of his parents or any other information.

I hope someone can help me.
