Fantastic Judy! The gentleman in Berlin has been inquiring as to the families of Emma, Auguste and Wilhelm Kebbel, he will be pleased that you have info on Johanna's family. I will contact you shortly on our family history. We are the great grandchildren of the oldest son Karl Kebbel, brother of Johanna. Carol Kabbel

You are correct, this is my husband's family. His Grandfather was Gustav Steffenhag who married Johanna Kebbel but some of the information you have received is incorrect. I would be very happy to share what I have on the Collinsville, IL, USA Kebbel-Marchert-Elbe families and am most anxious to see what you have also. I would also be interested in contacting the gentleman in Berlin who is working on this family.

Please contact me at EandJSteffen@SBCglobal.net or EandJSteffen@yahoo.com Judy Smith Steffen...THANKS!!

Hello: Just read you post on a Johanna, and the connection with the Kabbel/Kebbel family. I have received a family tree from a gentleman in Berlin outlining my husband's family tree and it includes his great grandfather Karl Kabbel, also spelled Karl Kebbel. Karl had a brother named August Friedrich 7/24/1855 who is shown with 7 children, two of which are Friedrich Otto Kebbel 1889 and Johanna Kebbel 1884. Friedrich left Dowgelaicie, Lith. with his wife Anna and 4 children to go to Collinsville! Johanna left Kybartai, Lith. with her husband Gustav Steffenhag and two children. Could this be the connection to the Kabbel/Kebbel family?

Hartmut, that must be "my" Johanna. She arrived in Collinsville, IL accompanied by Joseph Marchert May 15 1899 via SS Barbarossa sailing from Bremen May 02. She married Joseph's brother Frederick on May 27, 1899. He died in 1914 and she married John Demsky. She died 1952 and is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Collinsville. I would love to share info with you. There is some connection with the Kebbel/Kabbel family from this family.
Great to hear from you.
Judy Smith Steffen
EandJSteffen@SBCglobal.net

Hello Mary,
now I searched a second time the Konwo/Kaunas churchrecords and found the person, also 5 siblings: but Karl Gottlieb Joergeleit was born in Sep 13, 1876, not 1867. On Oct 16, 1875 also a deadborn brother was registered. All the other results you will get by letter-post, also a landmap. The father Ludwig Joergeleit was a miller, he often moved to other mills and chanched so his livingplace.

Hello Wendy,
the 1880 US-Federal-Census show´s 2 Elbe-families in Cinncinnati/Ohio. One of theses families came from Weurttemberg/Germany. I researched this family and made a familytree back to 1648. If this first immigrant Christian Heinrich Elbe was your ancestor please let me know, I will send to you this tree (for free of course). It would be a great pleasure to help any Elbe, if possible.

Hartmut (Verheyen)

The origin hometown of all Austrian Elbe is Wackendorf, Kaernten, Austria. They settled there since about 1535. You will find this familyname in the farmowner-records and churchrecords of Wackendorf and surrounding villages (Archiv der Dioezese Gurk, Klagenfurt, Austria). For more information feel free to ask.

Hartmut (Verheyen)

After study the Hamburg shiprecords aswell the New York lists the origin of this Elbe-familie seems very confused. Depart from Paulines immigration(ship)record of New York harbour, what said she came from Austria, now Ludwigs records tells us, that he was "Russian" and farmer, went from Hamburg Nov 26, 1899 and arrived New York by Ship "Palatia" Dec 09, 1899, final destination: Gillett, WI., brother Kasimir Elbe. The Hamburg shiprecord shows that his hometown was Malinowka/Russia, the NY-record show us "Molnosky". Kasimirs shiprecord from 1892 you could´nt see at "www.ellisisland.org" because there is the wrong list shown. You have to search the filmed lists. The Hamburg Shiprecord tellus as Kasimirs origin hometown "Straczin/Austria". He came by ship "Rhaetia" to New York harbour. He went from Hamburg Feb 15, 1892.
The question is, why was Ludwigs nationality "Russian" ? Paulines and Kasimirs was austrian.

Hello Pam,
your ancestors (Pauline and the children) went by ship "Patricia" from Hamburg Oct 06, 1900 and came to New York harbour Oct 19, 1900. The former homeplace was Striezyn. Could you identify this town ? Also Kasimir Elbe came from "Strazyn" and went to Gillett,WI. In this case was Austria the former state. A town Sterezyn was in Galizien, a former part of the Austrian Kaiserreich.

Wendy, please pass this on to your uncle.
Trying to trace the Forian Ambrosch name from
Tyrol, Austria. The immigration index copy of Philadelpia showed that, before he left Austria, the nearest relative was a sister name Therese Elbe of Karnten, Austria. I have not pursued this any further yet. This is on my ex-husband's family. His sister and I are going to try and locate some family members in Austria.
