hi sorry but didn't see your reply... no my grandmother was not ellen she was the result of the second marriage of William to Rebecca Mead, her name was Elsie Holdway born in 1907. I would be very interested to know anything about Ellen.

My grandmother always said she had no relations alive, but that doesn't seem to be correct..I need to get the woman relative she visited in Upper Hutt (out of wellington). my email is carnegie_investments@yahoo.com.au ( although I live in NZ)

Information I have for Ellen is Birth date 30 January 1871, born in Hokitka to Edward Elborn and Martha Elborn formally Vango, she married in 1891 and it says William Elborn as father deceased but I have found information about an Edward Elborne died 4 April 1910 in Christchurch city council database age 72 years born England. Resident in New Zealand 40 years which would fit with the dates I have. Our family history always had stories of another family in New Zealand but no contacts, do you have any more information on who she used to visit? I still do not know where Edward was born except for the family story that says he came form Cambridge. I cannot find any record of Martha and Edward marrying and some times he is put on certificates as William Elborn and some times Edward. I did not know Ellen died in child birth on the death certificate I have it says she died of phthisis, (TB), Is your relation the Ellen born to Ellen and William in 1895?

Verne Cathrine Elbone

My grandmother who was named Vernie Cathrine 'Elborn' was told by here mother Etta Jane Watts [Elborn?] of Grant county W.Va that she was an Elborn. My research is beginning to very strongly suggest that the Elborn name was used to obscure something that her mother didn't want Vernie Cathrine to know and is not here real name. However, I don't understand why the Elborn name was used. Mt grandmother was born in eastern West Virginia [Pendleton Co] in 1889. Does anybody know if there were any Elborns in the area at that time [c 1880's] and what their history may have been in the eastern West Virgina Area?

The whole topic of Etta Jane Watts and Vernie Cathrine Elborn / Carr / Shaffer has been a problem for my family for 120 years. My daughter and I are closing in on the truth but still have many questions. Answers seem to produce more questions. Any data or assistance will be appreciated.

Thanks

They had several children, 1 being my Grandmother Grace Florence Lambert.
I am researching my father's side-Elbourne family, I believe that my ancestors were in Buckinghamshire, but could also be elsewhere. Just inquiring if anyone know if any of their ancestors migrated to the South Pacific, via Wallis and Futuna and then to the Fiji Islands......this information will be of great value. Thanks ....My grandfather-my father's fathers name was Frederick Elbourne died around '96, if im not mistaken.

Hi Helen,
I do have an Edward Elborne b.1838, Cherry Hinton, in my Tree, and he is a Cousin to my Gt.Granfather Henry Elborne b.1841, Cherry Hinton.

They are both on the 1841 & 1851 Census' but then Henry moved to London, married Margaret Rosetta Peacock, had four children, the youngest being my Maternal Grandmother Rose Frances in 1875.

I have been unable to find Edward on any of the later Censuses, and there is no Family history of what happened to him. I was 9 when my Grandmother Rose died, and there was never anything discussed about the past. I never even knew, until I started researching three years ago, that she had been in service, or when her parents died, or anything about her siblings!!!

What I did find on BMD is that a Martha Vango married in 1855, Bethnal Green, to a William Partridge or a Charles Porter.

Martha also married a Joseph Low, Mar.Qtr.1881, Bethnal Green, 1c, 268. She is on the 1881 Census with Joseph and her three children shown as Step children, Helen, Sarah and William Elborne, their place of birth being shown as New Zealand. Is this the Family you are looking for?

There is nothing about Edward on any of the Census after that that I can find, and I've tried the various spellings.

I would be VERY interested to hear if you do find out anything about him. My e-mail address is:-

Georgina2564@aol.com

if you would like to contact me direct.

Kind Regards,

Gina
Dulwich, London
Where are you?

Hi Gina
I am in the process of looking at my family tree and have been searching for an Edward Elborn who emigrated to New Zealand in 1860-70. Research makes me believe that my Edward Elborn was born in Cherry Hinton in 1838 and may have been a cousin of Henry William Elbourne. Are there any family stories that have been passed down about relatives moving to New Zealand? I still have not found definative proof that Edward from Cherry hinton is my Edward but it is looking more and more likely. Any information you have to help me confirm or deny a link would be very well received. helen

We are looking for any information regarding the above, he was known to leave England for New Zealand with possible wife Martha nee Vango between 1862 and 1870. They had three children in New Zealand Ellen, Sarah and William. Martha and the children returned to England between 1875 and 1880 leaving Edward in New Zealand. Martha remarried and the family story goes that Edward remarried and possibly had another family in New Zealand. It was always said that he originated in Cambridge England but we have no solid proof of this.

Any information would be gratefully received.
Can't find him coming into Australia, & both his marriages were not registered ( or didn't actually happen!!).
Details as per my G grandmothers birth certificate are;
Thomas Elborn age 27 in 1856 so birth would be about 1829. It also states he was from Birmingham England.
A person not related to the family seems to have been the informant of the birth ( six months after the fact) ) so, the info could be a bit vague.
Any connections would be appreciated
Thanks
Kym
