Hi, I am a distant relative. My grandparents were Elcocks. Martha's father Fred is the brother of my Great-great grandfather Alexander Elock. They are from England. You can trace back to Matthew and Sophia Elcock on my tree.

I just started working on this line. I noticed a discrepancy with the parents you listed Anthony (1570-1613) and Mary Boteler (1577-1610) both died in England before Anthony was born in 1635. Still unsure if maybe these could be his ggparents. Also unsure if Anthony was born in England and emigrated to CT or if he was born in New Haven. Looking for any birth or emigration records for him.

My great-grandmother Martha was an Elcock. She was Mulatto. She was born October 1884 and was a servant in Hartford, CT in 1900 where shortly thereafter married my great-grandfather, Robert Knight, a Black man and a Teamster. I believe she was of Irish or English descent. She died in childbirth in/about 1922. She had 5 children before that.
I was hoping to find someone who may know of Elcock's in Windsor/Hartford, CT area and give me some insight.

Valari Knight Logan

ELCOCK DESCENDANTS

It has been determined that there are three families who descended from Richard William Curtis, a Queensland American Civil War veteran; the CURTIS family, the BERTHELSEN family and the ELCOCK family. As such we are contacting all known members of these families to make them aware of an upcoming dedication ceremony.

The American Civil War Round Table of Queensland, Inc. and the William Kenyon Australian Confederates Camp 2160 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Inc., both being non-profit groups, are organizing a dedication ceremony to honour Queensland’s American Civil War veteran, Richard William Curtis, with a bronze headstone and military marker; 95 years after his death, as his grave was never marked. As such,-we are trying to locate long lost family members and descendants so they can be invited and presented with Confederate Certificates honouring their ancestors military service.

Family members and descendants of Richard William Curtis, born January 5, 1840 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, England who died of drowning in the Brisbane River at Hamilton, on November 10, 1905. A military grave side dedication at Toowong Cemetery in Brisbane is being organized with a full Confederate military colour guard and ceremony.

Richard William Curtis was a Confederate American Civil War officer and Asst. Paymaster aboard the Confederate cruiser, CSS Georgia, the ironclad CSS Stonewall and the CSS Rappahannock of the Confederate States Navy; 1861-1865.
Family members and descendants are requested to contact Commander James M. Gray of the William Kenyon Australian Confederates Camp 2160, of the Sons of Confederate veterans, Inc., as soon as possible so Confederate Memorial Certificates honoring their ancestors military service can be prepared for them in advance. Certificates, suitable for framing, are available for family members at no cost. Contact Commander Gray by telephone at 07 3388 0581 or by email at jamesmgray@bigpond.com. A public announcement of the dedication date will be made prior to the ceremony inviting all to attend.
Hi all,
My name is Ian Elcock and I live in Essex England. My dads family originate from a village named Cawood in Yorkshire England. It would be interesting to know if any of us are connected more closely. There is usually a village fete in Cawood on the August bank holiday and a local Historian is usually in the village hall. I managed to get some old photo's when I was there a few years ago and he's a mine of information. From what I can make out, the family in this area is in two branches, farmers and builders and there is a lot more info at Leeds University library.

Regards

Ian William Elcock

All these surnames seem to have the same origin. They are also said to be patronimic surnames.
Did a bit of research and discovered there was a coat of arms description below.

"The Book of Family Crests
Their Source and Significations
Published 1882 By Reeves and Turner

ELCOCKE, Chesh., out of a mural coronet, or, a demi-cock, az., (in the beak a wheat-ear, ppr.) pl. 75, n. 16.
ELCOCKS, Chesh., out of a mural coronet, or, a cock's head, gu., in the beak a wheat-ear. pl. 75, n. 11. "

Seems to originally be a patronymic surname Elcocke, Elcocks, Elcox

I'm no expert on what it all means, but I'm sure that there's someone on here who is.

Hope this is helpful to someone.

The Elcocks/Elcox families (various spellings) I am researching are from the Herefordshire borders and lived around Kington back to the late 1600's

David,I don`t know how far you have got with the Elcock family, but,my earliest Ancestor was William Elcock Hardware of Cheshire,England. The Elcocks were a well connected Cheshire family who left very little information on themselves. They were also a big family in Shropshire and Lancashire.I believe all were related. My family were in textiles, drapery, wool and Spanish Iron in the 1400/1600 era and some went to the island of Jamaica.Marion Hardware was the last Jamaican Hardware but there seem to be rather a lot of Carribean Hardwares since then.Do you know of a link or anyone interested in collaborating on the Elcock/Hardware tie up?

I read in a book about surnames that Elcock is a variation/ form of Elijah or Ellis and that it was common practice to alter last names based on certain characteristics, that is to say, if a person was cocky, ... Elijah or Ellis is shortened and "cock" is added - Elcock. There are many other British names with the suffix (if you will) of "cock". Hancock, Babcock,.... Don't know if that was how our particular name came about but I do have my doubts about the Spanish origins (though my brothers would like to think so!)

Anthony ELCOCK b. 1635 d. 1672 CT

I am seeking information on Anthony ELCOCK of New Haven, CT b.abt. 1635 Possibly CT, d. 1672 probably CT. I don't know who his wife was but his children are: Mary (m. Jonathan PERKINS), John, Thomas (m. Martha MUNSON) and Sarah. I believe Anthony's parents are Anthony ELCOCK and Mary BOTELER but have no confirmation of this. Is anyone else following this line? I'mhappy to share information however, right now there is little to share. Thank you!
