Reply to William Eldon- Since Eldon is not that common a name in the US, it's likely that we're related.John Thomas Eldon(1865-1937)came from Cleator,Cumberland,Eng to Detroit, MI with his wife Margaret and his 8 children, including my father William Eldon. We have relatives in several states and if you will contact me at JELDON1@aol.com and give me some more info on your family I'll try to find a connection. My cousin Cathy was in England last month and visited with William Eldon in Egremont. They are related to us. My four g-grandparents on my Dad's side were all from Ireland and are Roman Catholic.I found Huddersfield on the map but not the other towns you mentioned, are they all close by? Hopefully we can find a connection to our families. Janet in Scottsdale, Arizona

Re: Eldon Surname/Eldons in the USA

Hi there

I am an Eldon living in South Africa. My grandfather was James Eldon (born 1898) who was the son of William Eldon (born 1868). William was the son of James Eldon (born 1840).
According to records we have traced, James had two brothers John and William and a sister Susan (their father was John born 1790).

My information indicates that John who was married to Martha had a daughter Margaret and five sons - James, John, William, Joseph and Edward. I have no birth dates for these gentlemen but in my research I have come across several names which correspond so we may be related. Other information I have been given includes 1871 and 1881census details which indicate that John, Susan, William and James were residents of Ennerdale Road which I understand was/is in Cleator Moor.

From what I have heard it is difficult to trace information back to the Irish connection because the records were destroyed.

It would be nice to hear from USA family if someone thinks there is a connection.

Hi
I am an Eldon from Cleator Moor now living in (Brisbane). Cleator Moor has a long history of Eldon's, dating back to around the early 1800's. The Villiage of Cleator has also a long history of Eldon's. A person from the USA, also a decendent of the "Moor" Eldon's has some very good info. I have some of that info, however I have recently moved house and, yes I can't find it. However I will find it and contact you.

A very good source of info made be found in the records of the church of St Mary's Cleator.

My Dad, William Eldon and his brother Eddie whent to the USA in the early 1920's. His brother Eddie migrated to Canada, his family is still located in Canada. I do not have any info on this line of the Eldon's

I am very interested in any Irish conextions with the Eldon clan.

My great-grandfather emigrated from County Armaugh, Northern Ireland either directly preceding or in the first few years of WWI. He traveled through Canada - I'm not sure where - and flew clumsily in the Canadian Air Force during the war. He settled in Detroit. His second son was my grandfather

My uncle recently told me about my great-grandfather arriving in Cleator England, coming from Ireland. My maiden name is Eldon. I think we may be somehow related because my greatgrandfater came from Cleator, England and settled in Detroit, Michagan . I think he had seven children - my grandfather was the youngest and he was a twin. His name was Alphonsus and I think his twin brother was Leo. He had a sister Margaret (Peggy),brothers Charles,John,James,... I don't remember everyone but my uncle has some kind of a family history of sorts. If this interests you,let me know.
I know nothing about geneology but have always been interested in family history. I couldn't sleep so decided to start learning a little today. What a nice surprise to find someone else looking for the very same thing.
