Please note I have inadvertently left out one child of Benjamin T. Eldred and Julia Rogers. That child, born between Ida Eldred, born 1888, and Ella Violet Eldred born 1893, is:

Benjamin Jeremiah Eldred, born April 15, 1889 in Bayonne, N.J.

This is one and the same family. I have done extensive research on this (my) Eldred line. Your grandfather, Benjamin Jeremiah Eldred is the great grandson of Benjamin Eldred and Margaretta Weston of Long Island. I believe your grandmother was Mabel Cushmeyer. Lucy Belle Eldred, your grandfather's sister, was my great grandmother and I would be grateful to learn what is written in the family Bible. Perhaps we can exchange information. Thank you.
Jeanne Jain, jeannejain@yahoo.com

I have no information on that Benjamin however my grandfather was Benjamin Eldred and both his sons middle name were Townsen. He was a tug boat captain out of NY and the waters off of Bayonne where he lived with his wife (second wife) my grandmother. We have a family bible given by Lucy Belle. I didn't know she was also an Eldred.

Edward O Eldred b 1887 in Indiana

Looking for info on Edward O. Eldred, born in 1887 in Terre Haute, Indiana. He joined the Army in May, 1908, served with the Signal Corps and was discharged in April 1910 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas as a first class Private.

On 2 March 1910, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Army Lieutenant Benjamin Foulois made the world’s first military flight in an heavier-than-air craft. On the ground, 1LT Foulois was supported by a small group of relatively unknown enlisted men who appear in the few pictures from the time around the event. The soldier listed above was one of these men.

The Fort Sam Houston Museum is trying to put names to images and are looking for pictures of these men. Is this soldier a member of your family? Do you have a picture of him, or stories to tell about his involvement in this event, or his other military service?

If so, please contact Jackie Davis, either through this forum (I can’t access it at work), or better, at jackie.davis@us.army.mil
Train band refers to a colonial militia, and apparently is short for "trained band", i.e. a group of men who were drafted and trained to serve. The term began in England and was in the colonies in the 17th and part of the 18th centuries.

The Spencer name has been hard for me to confirm as well. I have borrowed others' research but do not have primary source material. There is a Spencer family in Hartford, with several Obadiahs in it. I have other Spencers in my line, specifically two sisters named Audrah and ? who married Job Harrington (from RI (b., as I recall 1780's), living in Otsego County, NY and dying in Climax, MI) as his second and third wives.

I would love to have information about Hannah Cole. If she is descended from John Cole, first innkeeper in Boston whose son John married Susannah Hutchinson, then I would have a double line of descent from that line as well. If you prefer, you could e-mail that information

Hi,
According to "Samuel Eldred and Some of His Descendants" by N.B.Eldred your info about Robert is generally the same (RATHBUN spelled RATHBONE, will recorded not dod 7/10/1758). They had a son William with no dob noted (very sketchy info on this William). He in turn had a son William b. 1767 who in turn had a son William (no dob noted) who "died young" (a 1790 dob would have made his father about 23).Gotta love all the "same names". That's the best I can do - hope it helps.

According to Nelson B. ELDRED (“Samuel ELDRED and Some of His Descedants”) John3(Thomas2, Samuel1) was born between 1670 and 1680 and died in Kingston 1741, He lists many different dates and accomplishments that someone must have been gleaned from primary sources such as: military service, administrator of his fathers estate, overseer of another estate, witnessing a will, land deeds, a payment from North Kingstowne , executor for his brothers will, member of Town Council, and filing of his will for probate in 1741.

Let me know if I can be of any more help. My line of Eldred continues from John: John4, Daniel5, Caleb6, Stephen7, Octavius8, Harry, 9, Robert10.

I also am interested in COLE and SPENCER information and would appreciate seeing what others have.

Tim Eldred
Maetours(at)cheqnet.net
Eldred - Harbert and Leland connection
Somehow my family is related to a Leland family, just do not know how. My grandmother's family came from Rhode Island: My greatgrandfather was James Eldred born in 1809 in Rhode Island and married to a woman named Sarah. They had children: Thomas W. Eldred, born in 1835 in Rhode Island, James Eldred, born 1838 in Rhode Island, Alban Eldred, born in 1842 and two sisters Sarah and Ann.

My grandfather Thomas W. Eldred married Caroline Pitcher (she was born in 1842 in Rhode Island) and they had children, one of the children was my grandmother Emma G. Eldred, born in 1879. My grandmother Emma Eldred married a man named Lewis W. Harbert (born 1869 in Illinois). They met in Nebraska and married there and had their children there - somehow one of those families has a connection to a Leland family - anyone have Harbert or Eldred relatives on this board?

Ward Eldred, b. 1796 in CT.

"The history of the Eldred property is tied to the expansion of the United States into the Old Northwest territories following the American Revolution and the gradual settlement of Illinois by easterners early in the nineteenth century. Born in 1796 in Connecticut Ward Eldred had his eye on Illinois while it was still a territory. He and his cousin Swift traveled by foot from their home in New York’s Mohawk valley to Illinois in 1818 in the months just before statehood, surveying land in northern Madison County (presently Greene County ) before returning to New York."
(more on website)

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "Illinois Valley Cultural Heritage Association." The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce

http://www.eldredhouse.com/eldredhouse.html

Eldred Family Genealogy

The Eldred family isn't in my line, but I have a book about this family descending from William Eldred of Yarmouth, particularly the Eldreds of Greene County, Illinois. It is compiled by Orville Ward Eldred, 2926 Leland Ave. Chicago, Il., with assistance of C.H. Eldred, of Madison, Wisconsin, W.H. Eldridge of Twin Falls Idaho, and Mrs. Anna Eldred Hubbard of Carrollton, Illinois. Contains the descendants of Jehosaphat Eldred who was of the fifth generation removed from William of Yarmouth, the first branch of the Eldred family in America-The line of descent being, William1, Samuel2, Jehosaphat3, Jehosaphat4, and Jehosaphat5. It has a plethora of information beginning with the tribes in Europe, a picture of John Eldred of Great Saxony with his epitaphs and brasses circa 1632., church records, marriages, etc. There are also excerpts taken from the diary kept by Ward Eldred in 1818 when he migrated on foot from Winfield, New York to Carrollton, Illinois. The old homestead of the first Eldred's in Greene County has been purchased by the local historical society and is to be completely renovated. It was built of native Limestone and must have been a marvel in it's day. If I can be of assistance to anyone researching these ancestors I would be more than happy to oblige. I have personally visited the old home site and can go back and take pictures of it if anyone is interested. I may be able to find it on the internet too. The book contains letters dating back to 1820 and many incidentals covering people in the Civil War, what they did for a living, who participated in land rushes at Cherokee Strip, Oklahoma, with an inclination towards the family that settled Greene Co. Il. You can email me at the following address: Sagegrass2u@yahoo.com Good luck in your search.

need help with an Eldred puzzle

Hi all,

I'm having a time continuity problem and I hope someone can help. The person in question is William Eldred. I have him born about 1790 in North Kingston, Rhode Island and died in 1870 in Whiteside, Illinois. His spouse was Mary Ella (b. 1792 in New York, d. 1860 in Whiteside, Illinois).

The problem is William's parents. I have them as Robert Eldred (b. about 1707, died 10 July 1758, born and died in North Kingston, Rhode Island) and Hannah Rathbun (born 22 March 1706 in New London, Connecticut and died 12 Feb 1764 in North Kingston, RI).

The problem is, if William's parents died in 1758 and 1764, how could he have been born in 1790? Does anyone know if these dates are wrong or if these is some other error here? Thanks!

My research interests parallel yours as we share almost the same line of descent. Can you tell me what captain of the train band means? I have not seen that phrase before. I also see documentation about Nathan Eldred's first wife Ruth. I can't find any confirmed link to Spencer and welcome help. I do have a bit on Hannah Cole if you are interested.
Re: Eldred lost family from Rhode Island

Hi. I believe that the Arabella Eldred you mentioned was married to Benjamin W. Moon (not Moore). The 1880 census lists their children as Emma V. Moon (b. 1853), William E. Moon (b.1869), George N. Moon (b. 1873) and Anna Bell Moon (born 1866). Possibly there are other children who were out of the home by 1880. Anna Bell Moon is my great grandmother. She married Charles Shaw Thatcher on 2/9/1882 in Warren, RI.
As of the 1880 census Arabella is widowed. I am trying to find information on Benjamin. I show Benjamin and Arabella as being married in Muscogee County, GA, on 10/15/1846. Why they were married there is a mystery at this point. I hope to have more information before too long. Hope this helps a little. I don't know anything about the rest of that family however.
