Hi Bill,

Love the picture, do not believe I have that one. I do have a wedding picture of William Wells. I am Randy's cousin Barbara, Arthur G. Eldredge is my Grandfather and Randy's Dad was my uncle.

We really need to stay in touch a little better, have not heard from her in years. Thank you for posting the picture, would love a copy sometime. I would imagine Grandpa probably took that one of his Dad.

Thanks again, Barbara

Greetings,
We purchased the Captain Wm. Wells Eldredge house on Cape Cod in Falmouth, MA a couple of years ago. It was built in 1760, apparently by an early Eldredge of the same family. It was used as a tavern and as an inn during the life of Daniel Webster. The house is a charming original Cape house on about 3/4 acre of land with different levels, nooks and crannies. As historic preservationists and history bugs, we would love to learn more about Capt. Eldredge.

I'm hoping to link Lemuel Eldredge (b. ca. 1781) to Daniel--believe Lemuel might be Daniel's son. I believe Daniel died ca. 1814 in NY but don't know exactly where. Would appreciate any information you have on him.

Obituary of Wade H. Eldredge

14 Feb 1889, Jackson Sentinel, p.5, Spirit of the Country Press, from Sabula Gazette, Feb. 9, 1889 - "Died - At the Eldredge House, in this city, on Tuesday evening, February 7th, 1889, Wade Hampton Eldredge, aged 74 years and 10 days."

14 Feb 1889, Jackson Sentinel, p.8, Miles News - "Some of the people of this community went to Sabula to attend the funeral of Wade Eldredge. The deceased has been a resident of this county for over 52 years. He was an honest man and respected by all who knew him."

date and paper unknown, prob. Sabula Gazette, Feb. 9, 1889 - "Wade H. Eldredge, whose death was recently announced in this paper, was born at Burlington, State of Vermont, August 27, 1815[?].
"While a mere child, he left the parental roof to hew his own patheway through life. Though subject to varied conditions and surroundings, he continued to reside in his native State until he baceme of age, when he concluded to follow "the star of empire" and reached Dixon, in the State of Illinois, on the fall of 1836. He staid there a few months, when deeming he was not far enough west, he again turned his face towards the setting sun, and arrived in Sabula, January 1837. In March 1842, he married Mary L., daughter of the late James and Margaret Wood, and sister of E.A. and J.Wood. Five children were the issue of that marriage, three of whom died in infancy, and a daughter, Mary L., died in June 1870, in her 19th year. The only one now living being C.G. Eldredge, druggist, of Sabula. Mrs. Mary L., the mother, having died in December 1863.
"During his long residence of more than half a century, he was engaged in various business pursuits; among them were supplying steam boats with fire wood; and in manufacturing lumber. In 1842 he, in company with his brother, Charles (who died in 1846) operated a ferry between Sabula (then called Charleston) and Savanna, by means of an open boat, or scow, propelled by oars. But in 1849, having built a first-class horse ferry boat, he obtained a charter; and so long as the river was navigable, ran his boat between the points named and gave universal satisfaction to all requiring such transit. In the year 1855, having disposed of his ferry boat and assigned his charter to the purchaser, he built the Eldredge House, a large and commodious brick structure, which he occupied and managed as a hotel until 1869[?]; from which time it has been rented to different parties, and is now being operated by Capt. Marsden.
"For several years past, his health has been failing, and about three years ago he was attacked by paralysis which deprived him of the power of speech for sometime. From this disability, however, he partially, though never fully, recovered. His hearing had been partially lost for years. Some two months ago he was seized with another attack of paralysis which deprived him of the use of his right arm and leg. After suffering under this new affliction for some time, he appeared to be recovering, and on the 7th of the present month, was apparently better than for some time past, but while at supper on that day, another attack assailed him, causing him to suffer severe pain and seriously affecting the muscles concerned in respiration. This proved to be the final exacerbation of his paralytic condition; and in defiance of assidious medical treatment, his difficulty of breathing continued to increase and he gradually sank into the arms of death on the same evening.
"Thus has passed away another old-time and much respected man. In him Sabula has lost another personal land mark; another of the now few pioneers who in the thirties and forties began to settle and bring within the pale of civilization this part of Iowa. Noted for his reliability, his strict adherance to truth and equity and his readiness to advance by all fair and just means, the interests of the community, his loss is and will be mourned by all who know him and had dealings withhim. Faults and errors many have marked some part of his course - and which one of us has not erred? - 'To err is human' - but take him all in all we shall not soon 'look upon his like again'; while the rememberance of his many and manly virtues will long remain, and his memory be-
'As some tall cliff that rears its stately form,
'Swells from the vale and midway leaves the storm,
'Though round its breast the dark clouds may spread,
'A genial sunshine settles on his head.'"
1879 biography of Wade H. Eldredge

"Wade H. Eldredge, retired, Sabula; Mr. Eldredge was born in Burlington, Vt., Aug 27, 1815; in the fall of 1836, he went to Dixon, Ill.; in January, 1837, he came to Sabula, where he has since resided; he was engaged in various occupations till the fall of 1849, when he secured a charter for a ferry between Sabula and Savanna, Ill., which he continued to operate till 1855; in 1854, he built the hotel known as the Eldredge House, which he still owns, and which he conducted till 1860. Mr. Eldredge is a worthy representative of the pioneers of our country. Thrown upon his own resources in early life, he has, by honest industry, acquired a competence. A severe attack of typhoid fever, some years since, destroyed, to a great extent, his sense of hearing, so that he has retired from the active duties of the business. His first wife was Mary J. Wood, a sister of E.A. Wood; she died in December 1862. His present wife was Barbara Ackerman, a native of Pennsylvania. He had five children by his first marriage; only one is living - Charles G., who resides in Sabula."
1879 History of Jackson County Iowa, pg 695

ELDREDGE/ELDRIDGE Surname DNA Project

A lot of people ponder whether different ELDREDGE/ELDRIDGEs are related or where their ELDREDGEs come from. Has anyone ever thought about setting up a ELDREDGE Surname DNA Project? In case you are unfamiliar with what Surname DNA projects are please see the following link for a quick description:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surname_project

Basically it would enable ELDREDGEs to prove their relationship to other ELDREDGEs. Unfortunately I can not take part as it needs male ELDREDGEs to be tested (the Y-DNA is only passed down the paternal line) and ELDREDGE is not my paternal line.

However, if there are male ELDREDGEs out there perhaps you can take advantage of this science and shed more light on the ELDREDGE surname.
