ELDRIDGE/ELDREDGE Surname DNA Project

A lot of people ponder whether different ELDREDGE/ELDRIDGEs are related or where their ELDREDGEs come from. Has anyone ever thought about setting up an ELDREDGE Surname DNA Project? In case you are unfamiliar with what Surname DNA projects are please see the following link for a quick description:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surname_project

Basically it would enable ELDREDGEs to prove their relationship to other ELDREDGEs. Unfortunately I can not take part as it needs male ELDREDGEs to be tested (the Y-DNA is only passed down the paternal line) and ELDREDGE is not my paternal line.

However, if there are male ELDREDGEs out there perhaps you can take advantage of this science and shed more light on the ELDREDGE surname.
Ancestors of Robert Eldridge - IL

Hello,

Im looking for anyone who may have information on a Robert Eldridge born on Nov. 18,1849. He married Catherine Hill in St.Clair County, IL in 1871.
Dead-ends abound....Oral Family History says the family came from or through Tennessee...possibly around the time of the Civil War. Robert and Catherine had several
children....the oldest was Nancy Parthenia, youngest was Vera Velina and in-between were several others including my grandfather, Clarence Glenn, born in 1894. (I do have all of the children's names if anyone is interested) At some point, they moved to Perry County, IL.
I have found several Robert's in the 1850 TN census but without knowing for sure his county/state of birth or names of any siblings, I cant be sure which might be him. Unfortunately, the marriage certificate I recently acquired does not give any
additional hints other than confirming the wedding date. Any hints, leads or tips (along with source) will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Thomas Eldridge/Pocohantas legend

My name is Kristy Newman Rochat from Knoxville,TN. I am related to the Eldridges of Roane(Loudon CO),TN. My fifth great grandfather was Jacob Gardenhire. He had a daughter,Elizabeth Gardenhire, who married Jessie Eldridge,b.1762,Guilford CO,NC;d. 1854,Roane CO,TN. His parents were Thomas Eldridge Catherine Taylor. Thomas was b.abt.1730,PA;d.abt.1820,Knox CO,TN.I also have a story about the legend of being related to "Pocahontas" by Catherine Smiley.B.S. Pocahontas John Rolfe had a son, Thomas and when he was about 25 married Jane Poythress. They had a daughter,Jane. Jane mar. Col. Robert Bolling from England.Jane Robert had five daughters and one son,the great grandchldren of Pocahontas. One of the Bolling daughters,Martha, mar. in abt. 1727, to Thomas Eldridge, a lawyer. Thus, uniting an Eldridge with a direct descendant of Pocahontas. Thus from about 1730 onwards, the Eldridges of this line are descendants on one of the best known woemn in American history, the Indian princess Pocahontas. This came from the book "The Saxon Huose of Eldred" by Nelson B. Eldred III John Trevor Eldrid;copyright 1992. I'm not sure if this is the same Thomas Eldridge that I'm related to or not. But, this is the story that I have on Pocahontas.

Francis John Eldridge 1766-1837, London

Hi all

I have a Francis John Eldridge who was born in about 1766 (according to his death certificate), most probably somewhere in London. He was a watch-motion maker and lived in Finsbury area. He married Maria Ann Eldred in 1790 and died in 1837. I have quite a bit about their descendants and about Maria's family, but can't get any further with Francis. Has anyone come across him or got any ideas at all?

Gary

ELDRIDGE MONMOUTH AND CAPE MAY

As far as I have been able to find there is no connection between the Cape May Eldridges and the Monmouth Eldridges, the Cape May Eldridges did come from Mass, but the Monmouth group came straight from England. There are no Vorhees in our line that I can find yet, anyway. The immigrant ancestor of the Monmouth line is Jonathan who was born in Glouchester England in 1660-61.
NW NC/SW VA Eldridges

Seeking contact with anyone else researching the Eldridge/Eldreth family of Ashe and Surry Counties, NC and Grayson and Washington Counties, VA. I'm trying to identify how these two families connect, or if they even connect at all.

My Ashe line goes back to a John Eldridge b. btwn 1770 and 1780 who named sons Zachariah, Nathan, Stephen and John. John may have been born in 1774 in Guilford County, NC.

My ancestor Levi 1828-1910, son of Nathan and Rachel Eldridge, Eldreth, lived for a while in Washington County, VA where a number of Eldridges were enumerated in the 1850 census. He also apparently married Abigail Ward in Washington Co. sometime around 1846-47. They named their cons Wesley, William, Washington, Alexander and Nathan. Their only daughter was named for her grandmother, Rachel.

Levi apparently moved back down into Ashe County in 1863, where he remained for the rest of his life.

One interesting note about Ashe County: While some members of the family insisted on clinging to the spelling "Eldridge", the surname variation "Eldreth" came into use in the 1850s and 1860s. The spelling of the name on the 1850 census of Ashe was "Eldrage".

One other note: I have the book "Descendants of Levi Eldridge" by Geneva and Vicki Watkins and have been in communication with them, so we have discussed the two families and ways in which they might connect.

Take care,
Bob

Horace B Eldridge (c 1820 RI? -c 1870) had 18 children Becket MA

Horace B(ernard?) Eldridge may have been born in RI, about 1820. He married Laura A Smith (b OH) in 1840. In Becket, MA they produced 18 children, several of whom did not survive. Children: Almira, Orrin Willis, Luther, Martha Ann, Adelia "Adda", Allersin, Susan E., Emeline, Louise, Lucy "Alice", William H., Emma L., Ida, Lillian, Clara, Julia Malida, Albert H who changed the spelling to EldrEdge, and finally Ethel Frances (my great-grandmother b 1866 Monson MA). It appears that Horace died bet.1870-1873.

Am seeking any information about Horace, esp his birth info, parents' names, death info. He seems to be pretty invisible. I refer to him as "Horrible" Horace and he's one tough brick wall.

Thank you!

Eldridge/Eldredge from Hungary

I am searching for information on my GGrandmother, Emma Eldridge/Eldredge. b: 6/12/1893 in Kecskemet, Hungary. d:9/26/56 in Madera, California. She came to the US by ship the Graf Waldersee through the port of Philadelphia, PN on 9/21/1912. She would never talk of the "old Country". She took all family history to the grave with her. All we know is that she was a housemaid for an aristicratic family in Hungary or Germany and she had 7 tall husky brothers. One of them possibly named Emil or Elmer.

She listed her father as Jospeh Schuchuka and her mother as Rosa Scherk on her arrival papers. Neither name or alternate spellings she gave throughout her lifetime are real names. Eldridge/Eldredge was found through another source.

1st Husband Janos Szucs (John Szucs) Szucs translates to Furrier. They had 3 children 2 sons, Emil & Tabor, both born in Pennsylvania and a daughter Lenka born in California. all still living.

2nd marriage John Martin in California. They had 2 children there,John Jr and David, both deceased.

Any information would be greatly appreciated and I have been against this brick was for a few years know.

Thanks

Leonard Cleveland Eldridge, maybe from Texas ??

According to information I have Leonard Cleveland Eldridge married Mittie Elizabeth Smith. Mittie was born in 1891, probably in Hardeman Co, TX, to Duncan Smith and Katie Miller. Duncan died in 1907 in Chicago, according to my information, so I don't know if Leonard was from Illinois or Texas, or points in between. Katie Miller Smith died in Oklahoma City in 1942 so I checked Oklahoma and didn't find Leonard and Mittie, there, either.

ANY information on Leonard and Mittie Smith Eldridge greatly appreciated!

ANSON ELDRIDGE b.1830-1880> - NY -> OH -> MO -> CA -> ?

ANSON ELDRIDGE b.<1830> NY and SARAH BARRETT b.<1832> Portage Co., OH were married 04 Jul 1854 in Medina Co., OH. Their two children were: MARIA b.<1858> and ARTHUR W./N. b.<1864> both in Medina Co., OH.

The entire family next appears on the 1870 Fairview Twp., Caldwell Co., MO census.

Subsequently Anson, Sarah, & Arthur show up on the 1880 Woodland, Yolo Co., CA census; Maria is no longer with them. I have no information on the family beyond this point. Maria would have been <22> yrs old in 1880; perhaps she married in MO or CA.

Anson’s parents are yet to be identified. He was residing with Nathaniel and Orra? Horton on the 1840 & 1850 Medina Co., OH Fed. census. Anson’s relationship with the Horton couple has yet to be determined.

I would appreciate any information on these family members!
Looking for Grandfather and getting weary

Hello List: Isn't there anyone out there who descends from a John Eldredge/Eldridge born in Chatham between 1800-1810? John is my gggreatgrandfather and I have been trying to tumble this brick wall for so long now I am getting discouraged. All I know about John is what the marriage entry from Lyme CT tells me.
John Eldridge married in January 25, 1838 to Mary Ann Chadwick. She was from Lyme and John is from Chatham. No birth dates given. I find this couple later in the 1840 census of Lyme and they have a male child under five which would be my great-grandfather John. They also had a daughter born in 1841. I find her in many census records but the problem with our family is that most of the men were named John and the girls were Eliza J or Elizabeth. The marriage between John and Mary Ann was dissolved in 1851 by divorce. He apparently left her around 1843. She married Amos Huntley after her divorce was granted in 1851. He was her third marriage. Where can one find voting records or perhaps tax records to see if John voted or paid taxes. I think he may have gone back to Chatham but do not know. If any of this sounds familiar, please email me at caroline59@izoom.net

Thanks ever so much in advance
Carol Eldridge MN
Ella I. Eldridge, b. 1880, dau of Walter/Maria, she married.Chauncey Boyer

I have an original studio photograph of “Chauncey and Ella Boyer - 1906”, which I would like to get back to family members. This is obviously a wedding photo, although she does not have on a veil. Chauncey looks to be about mid 30s and Ella looks about 25. In the 1910 census and 1930 census, they lived in Elkhart Co., IN.

Ancestry.com data shows he was born Sep 1870, and she was born June 1880, both Elkhart Co. Her parents were Walter W. and Maria (Shoup) Eldridge. In 1930 census, Chauncey S. was 59, married at age 35, while Ella was 49, married at age 25 – which matches with the 1906 date of the photo. Ancestry.com shows marriage date 6 Apr 1906. Their children were Paul and Irene per census.

Email me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Chauncey & Ella Boyer.

Eldridge/Eldredge's Warwick, Rhode Island from 1750-1890

Eldredge's seeking these...

Robin Eldredge, a Revolutionary War veteran of Rhode Island, had a daughter named Elleanor Eldredge. Elleanor was quite a woman in her day, owning property as a woman of color. The city of Providence, took her property illegally and Elleanor actually fought this in court and won against the city! Remarkable in 1820.

Elleanor's family has the following descendents, these are the people I am looking for, Elleanor's Memoirs were printed in a book, as a fund raiser in 1830. "Memoirs of Elleanor Eldredge" 2 volumes were printed.

Of this family, I am looking for the following descendents:

Children of Robin (male) Eldredge...born 1750 about
Children of Phillis Eldredge, his sister
Chidlren of Ishmael Eldredge who was found murdered in Warwick Pond, Warwick, Rhode Island in 1918, as reported in the newspaper...

Thank you.
