Re: Thomas E Elgin

he is on findagrave.com
search for Thomas Elgin
listed as Thomas Edward "Tom" Elgin
Birth: Dec. 2, 1892
Rural Valley
Armstrong County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Sep. 15, 1944
Pittsburgh
Allegheny County
Pennsylvania, USA

"Tom" born in 1892 in Rural Valley, PA. He married Geneva E. Ritchey [born 1898] on February 9, 1915 in Kittanning [she was 17 and had just given birth on Jan. 13, 1915 to their son Henry]. They had two sons, Henry "Henny" Alexander Elgin and William "Bill" Alexander Elgin. However, the couple divorced April 6, 1920 and a few days later Geneva married Enos Schreckengost.

In 1914 he was injured when he was struck by a tram operated by the PA Rail Road for which he brought suit for damages (and the apparent source of Geneva's comment regarding Tom below).

Tom later lived in the Pittsburgh area [Harmerville] area for a period of time.

In April 1942, Tom registered for WWII's "Old Man's" draft. The draft registration on the right indicates that he was unemployed and then living with a Gertrude Barker at 702 West North Ave in Pittsburgh. It described him as 5' 8.5" tall, 163 pounds, blue eyes, gray hair and a light complexion.

Tom died in 1944 from respiratory failure/cerebral hemorrhage at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. At that time he was married to Gertrude, working as a laborer for the Crucible Steel Company and residing at 1123 Ridge Avenue. The death certificate shows Thomas' mother as "unknown" which would imply that Gertrude, as informant, had no knowledge of Thomas' mother Jennie. Place of burial on the death certificate was noted as Rural Valley, PA.

According to former wife Geneva, Tom was "a ladies man", telling younger family members (jokingly) that he "was killed by a train while running from a woman's husband."

Family links:
Parents:
Edward Addison Elgin (1858 - 1916)
Jennie Elizabeth Harkleroad Elgin (1869 - 1949)

Spouse:
Geneva Ritchey Schreckengost (1898 - 1984)

Children:
Henry Alexander Elgin (1915 - 1988)*
William Alexander Elgin (1916 - 1983)*

Note: Rural Valley, PA is noted on death certificate as place of burial but no specific cemetery is named. Most likely candidate is the Rural Valley Cemetery where father Edward is buried however no marker is found there for him.

Burial:
Rural Valley Cemetery
Rural Valley
Armstrong County
Pennsylvania, USA

Created by: DBH
Record added: Jul 05, 2010
Find A Grave Memorial# 54517337

********************

WWII draft registration 1942
Thomas Edward Elgin
b. 2 Dec 1892
Pittsburgh Allegheny Co PA

1900 PA Armstrong Co Cowanshannock
Elgin Edward head Oct 1860 30 married 12yrs PA PA PA farmer
Elgin Jennie E wife Dec 1868 31 married 12yrs 6 born 5 living PA PA PA
Elgin Wm A son Apr 1889 11 PA PA PA
Elgin Harry M son Aug 1890 9 PA PA PA
Elgin Thomas E son Dec 1892 7 PA PA PA
Elgin Maggie H dau Nov 1895 4 PA PA PA
Elgin Jennie dau Nov 1899 7/12 PA PA PA

This is not my family.
Re: Robert Morris Elgin

Yes, he was a Mason. He is of Scottish Origin and at the time he was land commissioner, there were still many Scottish Elgins still migrating to America. Such as Kelsin Elgin of Mobile. The rumor in my family is that Robert Morris Elgin was a really creative Land Commissioner. Supposedly if you look at a map and look where the foreigners lived it is actually set up like a mini Scotland with foreigners living along the border like border clans!

Higlanders and lowlanders. Ive tried to sit down and map it out with an old map and census records. Try it, its like a little board game. Im not great at geography, but if he did do this, and this becomes discovered now after all these years he will be considered one of the most creative land commissioners there was. It is supposed to work with English surnames on one side of the little Colorado, like where England is then foreigners like swedes, and scots on the other side. upper elgin is like the highlands of scotland and lower elgin like the lowlands of scotland. Head down to the colorado river and its supposed to be more english surnames just as if you have headed to England. It could be suggestive I suppose. But it was fun to try. Try it.

Dear Ray,

I don't have much more information than you do. My info. says that James Elgin was born in 1760 in county Derry, Ireland, and died 20 Dec 1837 in Armstrong Co, PA. Buried at St. Thomas Cemetery, Plum Cr, Twp, Armstrong Co., PA. His wife's name is spelled Ray in my records.

I have a lot on his siblings, and William's siblings, as you probably do, but no more than what you have on William and his dau. Nancy, and no other children are listed other than Nancy. My info. gives William's death as 10 April 1833

I have that Margaret McIntosh was born in 1809 in PA, and they were married 22April 1830. My source for these is someone else's genealogy (and her line is similar to mine). I have various sources for the rest of the Elgins.

I am descended from Daniel (1774-1844, married Mary Patton), the older brother of the James who (I think?) was born in 1760.

Sincerely,
Julie Gibson

I have made alot of headway searching for my line. However Thomas Edward Elgin born in Dec 2, 1892 in Armstrong County, PA is a mystery. Thomas is my Great Grandfather he was married to Geneva Ritchey/Schreckengost they had two sons William and Henry Elgin which I grew up with. My Great Grandmother Geneva divorced him in 1920. The last record I can find of him was when he was 49 years old living in Pittsburgh Pa. There is no death record or social security number that I can find. If anyone has any information on him it would be wonderful.
Carolyn Elgin

Hi, thanks for posting this. I had never read the 2nd article, which appears to be the Titus brothers' version.

This was a family fight for me! G.S. Elgin was the brother-in-law of my ggg-grandmother. William Tatman was my gggg-grandfather. The Titus brother's were second cousins of my g-grandmother, Sarah Ann Tudor.

I did not know that Bevins, who in one account was the one who actually shot Elgin ("Annals of Platte Count, MO") was a brother-in-law to the Titus brothers. I have not seen a Titus sister with that name. There were a lot of marriages with the O'Dell family. Two of the pursued Titus brothers fled to Texas and never went back. An article in the Liberty paper said they blew off the jailhouse door with gunpowder to escape.

Of course I wonder just what really happened.

Hi Hope, I think my grandfather, James Benjamin Elgin, is related to the Elgin's in Belton. He died in 1976 at the age of 52. He lived in Greenville S.C. but died in Oklahoma while on a trip to California. Don't know very much about his family history. I think his mother died when he was very young and his father re-married.

Re: elgin's from germany

I think you are going to need a little more information from the U.S. before you are going to be able to determine where in Germany they were from. And where they really from Germany or where they from Prussia? ILGEN is a German name, but there were/are ILGENs all over Prussia and Germany. Start with the information you already have and work your way back. Do you know for a fact they were here in 1840? If so, that's good! If you know where they were in 1867, that's even better! Check the tax rolls and see if they paid a poll tax. If so, they must have voted which means they were a naturalized citizen. The 1867 Voters Registration was the first one to come out after the Civil War and it has information that other voters registration do not. It will tell you, if they were indeed naturalized, where they were naturalized at. You can then write to that county and request their naturalization records and their Oath of Alligence. That will tell you where in Germany/Prussia they were from. If they were not naturalized citizens, there are other resources to check for your information. You just need to get creative. Let me know if I might be of help.

I'm just starting to look into my family heritage. what I can gather so far is that my GGG Grandfather and mother came over from Germany in the 1840's. But I am not for sure about this, I have not found any verifiable data. If anyone has any information to share with me that would be greatly appreciated. I believe my GGG grandfathers name was Johann Samuel Ilgen born in germany in 1806. Again, I have not been able to find any verifiable data on this yet. If anyone have any information on Elgin/Ilgen from germany, I would greatly appreciate it.
Craig Elgin

Re: Family

According to James Elgin's study of the Elgin family your line begins with Daniel Elgin who lived in Ireland. His son James Elgin. Daniel may have emigrated to America with James but the family were in Pennsylvania by 1782 in the counties of Armstrong and Indiana. James was born in County Derry, Ireland in 1760. At age 31 he married in 1791 Margaret Ray. James bought land in Plum Creek Township, Armstrong County, PA.
Robin,

I was married to your father back in the 90's. I knew your grandmother Elma. I lived with her for about 4 of 5 month in 1999. I know Elma had a brother named Richard but don't remember his last name as Elma retained the last name of Elgin. I have long since been divorced from your father but I was hoping you may have some new information as far as contacting him. When we divorced he was no longer in Crestline. His mother lived in Santa Monica as you said, but eventually was placed in a home for the elderly at least I was told that by her caretake in 2002 (Primo). Your father was not close as I recall. If you can let me know I would appreciate it. As far as your other relatives on your fathers side, I only heard about the sister that died young in life named Evelyn. And perhaps a distant family in Austrailia.

Wendy M Leach-Elgin

Marcella Elgin & James L Riley

I am looking for the family of Marcella Elgin and James L. Riley. Marcella was born Nov 3, 1895 in Iowa and died June 10, 1998 in Newport Beach or Costa Mesa, CA. James L Riley was born (I think) Aug 12, 1913 and died March 3, 1993 in Costa Mesa or Newport Beach. Both were graduates of Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO. I believe they had two sons. Marcella was the daughter of Charles Miller Elgin and Anna Belle Shay (Shea). When I originally made a post on this couple, I mistakenly thought Marcella married a John Riley.

Re: Robert H. Elgin

Hello Robin,

My name is Terri Stamper, and I am an adopted daughter of Elma Isabella Elgin (Barnes). Your Dad and I were step siblings, but not close and lost contact when I was 13. Your paternal grandmother is almost 90 (May 10) and is in a hospital currently in Santa Monica. I was raised by my adopted father when Elma and he divorced when I was 13. So, I have not had much contact with Elma through the years; however, I was very close to her parents until they died. Ironically, I just heard from your Dad's cousin (Elma's brother's daughter) and her father, Dick Barnes (your great-uncle) just passed away this last Tuesday. He was the only brother of Elma's. Your Great-grandparents had two children, Elma and Richard. If you are interested, I can give your email address to your Dad's first cousin, Linda, who may be able to provide more genealogical information. Having been adopted, I have not kept contact with any family members other than this one cousin whom I spent a lot of time with as a child because we were close in age.

I knew Bobby had a daughter, but had lost contact after he and your mother divorced. I'm sorry to hear you do not have contact with Bobby, as I know not knowing your parents can often lead to a void in a person life (having been adopted, I speak from experience). Fortunately, I made a good decision in staying with my Dad, but cannot help feel remorse at never really knowing Elma. But, she did not make much of an effort either.

If you would like Elma's phone number, I can provide that also. I do believe if she is able, she would love to hear from you.

Cheers,

Terri Stamper

According to "Elgin Families" compiled by James G. Elgin page 59 states:

James Alexander Elgin was born in Centerville, Iowa on October 4, 1872 and moved to Osborne County Kansas and on to the Oklahoma Territory with his mother about 1897 or 1898.

He was married on January 22, 1896 to Elvira Louise Springer, who was born on October 8, 1868 in West Virginia. She taught school in Downs, Kansas and Oklahoma until the move to Lethbridge, Alberta Canada where James worked in a coal mine until he homesteaded in Granum near Claresholm, where they were living as late as 1912. He also build (sic) houses for sale and farmed in several nearby small towns. He owned and settled land in the Peace River Valley. James took much interest in community affairs, but suffered from cancer for three years before his death on August. 26, 1941. Ellie had preceded him in death, having died on November 11, 1930 and they left five children.

Roy Alexander, Ray Springer, Mary Louise, Ruth Elvira and Grace Caroline

Hope this helps - and special thanks to James for compiling this information.

Linda
Re: J. W. Seavers charged with killing Frank Elgin at Norman, Oklahoma

I have the book on Elgins compiled by James Elgin, here is what it has to say:
A George Elgin was born in Scotland and you have all in information on him.
A4 James Elgin was born in Charles County, Maryland sometime around 1711 and has been the most difficult of this family to trace.
The little that is known of him had to be gleamed from records and the process of elimination had to be applied, hopefully correctly.
James is first mentioned in the will of his father, George, in 1748 and then again later in his mother's will in 1756.
He purchased two tracts of land from his brother, George and his wife, Susannah in 1753. He paid £120 for 125 acres of "Belayne's Addition and Belayne's Hills". He was listed as a carpenter. He is known to have purchased land around 1760. He had at least three known children. James, Elizabeth and Charity.
A4.1 James Elgin Jr. was born in Charles County around 1733 and was married but wife has not been found. He then appears in Prince William County, Va. in 1780 to 1785, where several records exist and a census record of 1787 lists him and one of his children.
Several of his children have been gleamed from records but the order of birth has not been established. I will attempt to establish some order by using the known facts about the children.
James went to Abbeville, S.C. in 1787/8 and apparently soon died there.
The British Mercantile Claim of 1799 stated that he removed to one of the Carolinas about 12 years before. He had contracted a debt to a Glasgow firm for £2.15.2 prior to 1769 for the debt was due that year.
James evidently died soon after arriving in South Carolina and his wife had evidently died earlier.
The five children of James as gleamed from records. Robert, William, Grace, Nancy, Ann, and Alexander.
A4.1.1 Robert Elgin was born in Charles County, Maryland in the 1750's, and is another that has been hard to trace.
It is known that he was married three times. Robert is assigned to James based on two very good records, one being the record of Robert and James selling beef to the county of Pr. William, Virginia in 1782 and a lawsuit in Charles Co. Maryland claiming debt and naming Robert and his cousin, William, as defendants. William died and Robert had moved out of the state, leaving William's widow, Alethea, to shoulder the debt to a man named, Robertson.
They lost their property over this debt, William Alexander Elgin being forced to sell his portion of "Batchelor's Agreement".
Robert's father had run out on one of his debts too, leaving a firm in Glasgow, Scotland holding the sack.
Around 1784-5, Robert, as a recent widower, his sisters, Ann and Grace, now married, and his brothers, Alexander and William, all came to the "Old 96th. District" near Abbeville, South Carolina and either bought land or was given bounty land by the Continental Congress. They were also instrumental in establishing the Turkey Creek Baptist Church. Robert and Alexander and his wife, Catherine, being charter members.
Their father, James Jr., is known to have move there too but it appears it was a couple of years later and appears to be gone by 1800.
Robert was a widower with two sons and one daughter when he purchased his farm of 300 acres on Hogskin Creek in 1785 near his brother, Alexander, and a neighbor named William Putman.
William Putman was a man about Robert's age who appears to have been a widower too. In 1800, William Putman had a young son, named James, a daughter named Nancy and two daughters just over 16, one named Mary, the other unknown. This family was to be a major factor in Robert's life many years later.
Robert soon returned to Charles County, Md. where he wooed and wed an older widow, Arcajah Louisa Latimer, who was the widow of Benj. Latimer and was the daughter of William McConshie Jr, son of William, the pastor of the Durham Parish Church from 1711 until his death in 1742. She was always called "Cagy". They were married in Durham Church in Charles County, on Aug. 9, 1787 and continued to live there until 1796, when Ann, his brother, William's widow, died in Abbeville. S.C. and the children named Robert as the administrator for her estate. They promptly moved to Abbeville.
With them were Robert's two sons and a daughter plus the three sons and three daughters of Benjamin Latimer.
The names of the Latimer children that came to Abbeville with Robert were: Grace, James, Clement, Catherine, Stephen, and Mary. Clement T. was born in Charles Co. Md. on Oct. 10, 1781 and died April 1, 1855 in Abbeville Co., S.C.
The Latimer children became quite prominent and wealthy, most never moving from South Carolina. The children of Robert and Elizabeth, his first wife are: James, Charles and Elender.
Also with the family were several slaves that had been left to the Latimer children by their father, Benjamin, but with life use to Arcajah. As the husband of Cagy, Robert had control of the slaves.
Robert was a person that trouble seemed to follow for he was sued several times in Virginia but was also sued in Abbeville. He was a member of the Turkey Creek Baptist Church, which he had rejoined in 1803 and was a member for approximately 5 years until booted out in 1808 for taking a young woman down to Greenville in his chaise without Cagy's consent. His excuse was that he had lost all of his affection for his wife.
It appears from records that in 1807, he had taken, Mary, the daughter of William Putman to Greenville, and had gotten her pregnant. William Putman decided to move back to Rutherford County, North Carolina where he had many kinfolks. Robert, meantime, had been called on the carpet by the Church and after three meeting was booted out of membership in early 1808. He said that Cagy was old and infirm.
Robert decided to go with the Putmans, abandoning Cagy, and tried taking the slaves, Phebe and Nell with him.
The Latimer boys thereupon had him arrested in July and he was in jail until August 1808 when he was released on bond but not to leave the state until his hearing in July Court, 1809.
After the hearing, his bond was dismissed then and he won his case by making another bond to return the slaves upon the death of Cagy. His sureties were his brother, Alex and James Shay or James Kay, his brother-in-law.
NOTE JGE: James Kay was his brother-in-law and many researchers state that James Kay signed his bond but to me that signature looks like Shay, but bad handwriting could account for the discrepancy, I suppose.
Again, in the meanwhile, William Putman had died in Rutherford Co. N.C. in 1808 and Mary had delivered a daughter. Robert left for Rutherford County in 1809 after posting the bond. There he lived with the Putmans for many years, fathering several more children with Mary. It appears Cagy died sometime in 1814, as Robert returned the slaves and settled his bond. Robert's son, James and his family, and his daughter, Elender, left for the state of Indiana at this time apparently forever severing their ties to their father. His son, Charles doesn't appear in the 1810 census and is lost to history.
By 1808, Mary Putman's sister had married to Abednego Adams Jr. This Adams is most probably of the Charles County Adams family and a kin to Robert. Abednego Adams Sr had lived in Rutherford county from before 1800.
On Nov. 13th, 1816, the heirs of William Putman, including his son, James, his daughter, Nancy, his son-in-law, Abednego and his wife, Mrs. Adams, the unknown daughter, "Son-in-law" Robert Elgin, and Mary Elgin sold the property in Rutherford County to John Patterson and promptly moved out of state to Jefferson County, Tennessee as it is known that they were in Jefferson Co. prior to July 1817. There he became associated with James Galbreath, Frederick and Polly Pulse and Joseph Copeland. The Galbreaths later moved with the Elgin family to Alabama.
Mary and Robert were not really married and the two oldest daughters of this relationship were using the Putman name during this time but the three youngest children were using the Elgin surname.
Robert got involved is several more lawsuits in Jefferson County from 1817 well up into 1825.
Robert appeared in court as next friend, in a divorce suit by Polly Pulse from Frederick Pulse but the suit was evidently dropped and Polly and Frederick sued Robert. The records I have do not give the information on the exact content of the suit or the problem but would be interesting to know.
Some of the children of Robert and Mary were becoming of age so Robert and Mary decided to marry which they did on Sept. 14, 1821.
They continued living in Jefferson County until 1836 when I think Robert died, but have no record at all.
His daughter, Louisa had married about that year and the family had afterwards moved to Red Hill, in Marshall County, Alabama where Mary was living in 1840 but is untraced since. The many children of this couple began showing up in the records and will be given later in this history.
A4.1.1.1 James E. Elgin was born in Prince William County, Virginia in 1778 and stayed in Charles County, Md. while his father bought land in the "Old 96th. District" near Abbeville, S.C. in 1785. He moved to that district when his father returned there in 1796 with his new wife, Cagy.
James was married in Abbeville, S. C. in 1807 to Eleanor "Ellen" Masters, the daughter of John Masters, a Revolutionary War veteran, who rode with General Francis Marion and came to the old 96th. with so many of the allied Maryland and Virginia families. Eleanor was born on March 20, 1785.
Several of James and Ellen's children were born in Abbeville but in 1814, he decided to move to the Northwest Indian Territory after the area had been made safer by the defeat of the Indians and British at Tippecanoe.
Franklin Co., Indiana was part of the wilderness when they first arrived however with much hard work and many privations, he and his family managed to carve out a fine farm.
James died in 1831, the same year his son, George, was married.
Ellen then moved to the farm of her married daughter in Morgan County, Ind. and lived with them until she purchased a farm of her own. Her death was in January 1857. James and Ellen had 9 known children.
.
A4.1.1.1.3 Alexander M. Elgin was born in Abbeville, South Carolina on Oct. 5, 1811. He moved to Indiana with his parents in 1814, where he was married on Mar. 11, 1840 to Elizabeth J. Elliott, who was born on Mar. 25, 1821. They lived in Morgan County, Indiana, where several of their children were born.
In 1853, they moved on west to Mystic, Appanoose County, Iowa and Elizabeth died there on Sept. 15, 1862.
Alexander found large veins of coal on his property which he proceeded to mine and prosper but he also served as one of the first sheriffs of the county.
He remarried in Nov. 1862 to Lovina Chantler but she died on Jan. 11, 1865, about 16 to 18 months after the marriage.
Alexander then married Mrs. Caroline Stafford Murray, who was born in Morgan Co., Ind. on May 13, 1832 and had one daughter by her first husband, whom Alexander adopted. They had three additional children before Caroline died on Aug. 16, 1882 or 1884. Alex died on March 4, 1894 in Centerville.
A4.1.1.1.3.3 James Simpson Elgin was born in Morgan Co. Ind. on Sept. 30, 1845 or 1847. He was married in Centerville, Iowa on Feb. 25, 1869 to Ellen Kiser at her home. She was born in Indiana on Nov. 5, 1849.
James and Ellen lived together until 1892 when they separated and he moved to Kansas City, Mo. and Ellen moved to a 160 acre farm or homestead in Alton, Osborne Co. Kansas with all her children except the oldest girl, who had died.
Ellen farmed, with her sons, and made a couple of return trips to Centerville.
On Aug. 12, 1896, Ellen, with her next friend, Henry Conn, as Surety, filed for divorce from James in the Court of Osborne County, Ks., charging him with thirteen years of adultery, and abandonment for three years. James was living in Kansas City, Missouri at the time. The divorce was granted.
On May 4, 1897 Ellen and Henry Conn were united in marriage in Bloomington, Kansas.
In 1900, it appears from records that she was on a farm in Payne Co., Oklahoma near Perry.
She may have made "The Run" into the Indian Nation and was living with the two youngest children but there was no reference to Henry Conn. In fact, Ellen was using the Elgin name and stated in the census that she was a widow. The older children had established households of their own.
In 1902, James made a move to Travers, Alberta, Canada where he filed on a homestead. He was soon followed by Ellen and the children except one son, who was left in an institution.
Ellen had come to Alberta in the spring of 1903 to Claresholm, Alb. where she opened a boarding house for single men. Ellen could neither read nor write but she could sign her name and keep figures in her head and no one would dare try to cheat her.
All six children were born in Centerville, Iowa but lived near Mystic.
He was married to Clara Smith, who was a school teacher in the area and born in 1870.
In 1902, Munroe and his father moved to Alberta, Canada where he homesteaded a farm and at the same time he was homesteading a farm in Perry, Oklahoma. He spent 6 months in Canada and 6 months in Oklahoma.
He and Clara had two children before they were divorced in 1915. One child was stillborn. Clara moved back to the United States where she was living in Tulsa in 1920.
Munroe married a third time in Claresholm, Alberta on April 3, 1916 to Nora Nellie Crowe Milner, a widow who was born in Flamborough, East Yorkshire, England on Nov. 16, 1880 and to them were born 4 additional children.
Munroe died in Perry, Okla. on July 16, 1946 and Nellie died in Tahlequah, Oklahoma on Jan. 10, 1965.
A4.1.1.1.3.3.4 Frank E. Elgin was born near Centerville, Iowa in Feb. of 1874 and moved to Osborne County, Kansas and on to the Oklahoma Territory with the family. When the census was taken in 1900, Frank was in Woods County, Okla. listed to be a farmer, could read and write and speak English however when the family moved to Alberta, Canada Frank was left in an institution. His affliction is not known, nor is his death date.

J. W. Seavers charged with killing Frank Elgin at Norman, Oklahoma

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 29 October 1903 Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

Guthrie: Governor Ferguson offered a reward of $500 for the arrest and conviction of J. W. Seavers, charged with the murder of Frank Elgin, a patient in the asylum for insane persons at Norman. Seavers was a ward attendant. He became enraged at Elgin and beat him so brutally that Elgin died from the effects of the assault. Seavers was located at Osawatomie, Kansas, by the sheriff of Cleveland County, Oklahoma, but the governor delayed issuing a requisition and Seavers escaped. A coroner's jury at Norman exonerated the officials of the Oklahoma Sanitarium company for the responsibility of Elgin's death.
I stumbled across your posting and I am also looking for information on VIctor Montre who grew up in Pike, CA and was a Nevada County Judge. I also grew up in Pike and my parents live there still. They own the property that "Our House" once stood. It was a stage stop/inn/blacksmith shop in the late 1800's/eary 1900's. I am doing research on the area, mainly on "our house" and remember your grandfather Victor Montre from when I was a little kid. He was a good friend of Gil Lowe and we went to his home in Nevada City a few times. I was wondering if your family had any pictures, or letters/stories about Pike. I am putting together a history of the area for my parents Roland and Charlene Robertson. Any help would be greatly appreciated. You can email me at osbornec9701@netzero.com. thanks!

She may have married a Riley and had two sons. Charles Miller Elgin was born May 6, 1893 in the Indian Territory (Oklahoma) and died, I think, May 26, 1974 in Los Angeles.
