Family history on Elias Howe is difficult to say the least. I am the grand daughter of his youngest child, Mertie Howe..who married a Hill. Her son Billy G. Hill was my father....There are Howie's in Belmont N.C. a town N. of Charlotte N.C. Mertie had a son David that was still alive three years ago...and G.C...he was always called Gip..no idea why. I do know that Singer stold his sewing machine plans..and eventually ended up paying back millions. Elias invested the money in the union army. He was the only Union Army person in my family..What I wish is that I had paid attention when my family told me about my Great Grandfather..course what kids do you know that actually pay attention to you...mine don't. There has to be alot of family out there..finding them is difficult...jeanie

I think there is possibly a Thomas Howe. I was under the impression a home was built by Elias Howe for Thomas Howe in Nahant, Mass. It is on Howe Street (Lane, Ave?)which is about a block long. The home is definitely 19th century with a high tower that overlooks Boston Harbor all the way north to Marblehead.

My grandmother was Elias Howes youngest child...Mertie Howe-Hill. Her youngest son Billy Gallant Hill was my dad. A friend sent me this site..and I am soooo happy to find all of you. The Howe's were very private people. Mertie's two other sons may be alive and until five years ago my cousin by her oldest son David was alive. We used to keep in touch but lost each other...It is hard to believe that after searching for seven or eight years I have finally found you...Please feel free to email..I will tell you what little I know and maybe we can piece this family together...jeanie

Re: James Cody Elias

In doing further research on this family, I now know the James Archdeacon of Norfolk, was not the son of Edmund and Ann Oldham Archdeacon/Cody. Apparently their son, James, is deceased by the time Ann wrote her will, on 19 March 1813, and probably by the date of a deed of 1809 (no day or month) but presented in court on 19 Mar 1810, when all the children either signed or witnessed the indenture giving Ann Oldham Cody the use of the 150 acres she lived on, for as long as she lives. In Ann's will, one of her heirs is Martha James Cody and the only child she could belong to is James. There is no mention in Ann's will of an Elias. Her will was presented for probate on 17 Oct 1825. There were no codicils added to it at any later date than its original writing. There is evidence James may have also gone to NC and lived in Caswell co near his uncle, James, who married Sarah Womack. Edmund Cody alias Archdeacon (as the Prince Edward co VA court referred to him, after his death) owned land in Caswell but never lived on it.

'B.H' talld me that I am right about my opinion that probably the "cu" is a suffix. than , the real name is coming from Eliyahu which means in Greek Elias and that I have to search at the Sefaradic sources. why I'm not sure yet to get start seriously? because it's a big change for me. all my life I was Eliescu -( 'ashcenajim') and suddenlly I'm Elias and I have to search at the 'Sefaradim'. I don't know where to get more strengths for it, even though
at this site I found the same meaning.
I'll be glad if someone heard about it or maybe a specialist can help me with the facts for being sure about the new information I'v got , so I can go ahead with my searching.
excuse me for my bed English.
thank you very much,
Mika

ELIAS (VON ELIAS)

Looking for ANY information regarding Nicolaus von Elias born in Prussia sometime during 1820's and moved to Detroit, Michigan sometime during either 1840s or 1850s and married Elizabeth (Bertha) Schnettler (b.1830) sometime in mid to late 1850s. Was a tailor. Lived in Liberty Township (St. Nazianz), Manitowoc County, Wisconsin during 1860s and early 1870s - also spending time during 1860s in Keweenaw County, Michigan. Moved to the Keweenaw again in late 1870s until roughly 1910 when he moved with his eldest daughter's (Regina Elias Warbler) family back to Detroit. Died in Detroit ca. 1918. Any information is appreciated.

Sorry for the delay in response - I had surgery and just got back to work. Today!
I have seen those Elias family members when looking for my own, but those names don't register other than being the names of Nic and Balty's children. Nic was born ca. 1833 and Balty ca. 1827. My -guess- still is that they are brothers or at the very least, cousins. Nic had only 1 son - John - born 1862 in Michigan - unsure if Detroit or in the Keweenaw. Balty had more children including sons named Nic, George, and John and Hubert.
I do know that Nic Elias died in Detroit in April, 1921. I have not located his son beyond the 1910 census (if it indeed is him) and that family didn't hear from him after he left home - looks like he ended up out west in Oregon and Idaho and died in 1917 as best as I can tell. His 4 sisters are all known to me (not personally, but in records) as well as their children.
Sorry I don't have more for you, but I can tell you that Nic moved his family for a short time to Stearns County, MN and is enumerated in the 1875 state census for Minnesota. They must have left soon after because the oldest daughter, Regina (my g-grandmother) married in 1877 to Henry Warbler whom she met in the Keweenaw - probably Central Mine.

My great grandfather's name is Juan aka John Elias. He was married once before to Serafina, and I am through this line. There is a story that after Serafina died, he went back to Mexico and married a girl and had other children here in California. No one knows what her name is and what happened to them. Maybe we can compare notes.

Sarah Elias

I am looking back on my family tree with some similarities to yours. John Elias came to the US with his father George, and brothers Charles and George. John was born in 1842 in Prussia and emigrated to the US at age 7 according to a census. He settled in Berrien Co., MI. I am aware that there were relatives in the Detroit area but not sure if they were Elias relatives or from another side. Do any of these names ring a bell with the family you are searching?

Update on this post: Nic Elias came to the U.S. in 1855 with another Elias - Balthasar. Balthasar also had his wife, Mary Kremer Elias, with him. Both Nic and Balthasar lived in Manitowoc County, WI at the same time. Balthasar died near there ca. 1878. Nic actually died post 1920 - he is enumerated in the 1920 census in Detroit. Still looking for information from Prussia/Germany showing Nic's birthdate.

Re: Syrian Elias family, Lawrence, Massachusetts

My grandfather Michael Elias had a brother Joseph and I just found out there was a brother Charlie. I don't know about a brother Simon. This is what I know. My grandfather Michael married my grandmother Lulu Babcok and they had two chldren, my father-Richard and a daughter Eleanor. Then, my grandmother divorced my grandfather and married his brother Joseph! I remember Joseph trying to find records about their adoption. Supposedly the records were burned in a fire either at the orphanage or the church where they were baptised. I am not even sure that Elias was their born name or their adopted names. I also found records from a ship manifest stating a Sara Elias came from Syria with two daughters and a son Michael and an infant to meet up with her husband who was already in MA. I think we may be related but I am not sure. What do you know about the facts?
