Art thou Elias? And he saith: 'I am not'" (John the Baptist contradicts Jesus -- Jesus says that John is Elias and John denies that he is what Jesus ascribes him to be...."

Syrian Elias family, Lawrence, Massachusetts

I'm researching three brothers of syrian descent, who by my records were born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. They were Charles E. Elias (my grandfather), Michael Elias, and Simon Elias. All were born on August 23rd, 1895. While they were triplets, they were not identical. Again, based on family lore, they were orphans.

I have fairly detailed information on their descendants, but not on their ancestors. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Surname

Hi,
Ihave a big problem:
I'm not searching yet relatives because I'm not 100% sure about my real Surname. I got an answer from Bet-Hatfuthot about the meaning and the sources of the name Eliesco or Iliescu from Romania. my searching gave me nothing. 'B.H' talld me that I am right about my opinion that probably the "cu" is a suffix. than , the real name is coming from Eliyahu which means in Greek Elias and that I have to search at the Sefaradic sources. why I'm not sure yet to get start seriously? because it's a big change for me. all my life I was Eliescu -( 'ashcenajim') and suddenlly I'm Elias and I have to search at the 'Sefaradim'. I don't know where to get more strengths for it, even though
at this site I found the same meaning.
I'll be glad if someone heard about it or maybe a specialist can help me with the facts for being sure about the new information I'v got , so I can go ahead with my searching.
excuse me for my bed English.
thank you very much,
Mika

ELIAS - Liverpool

My 4 x G GFather William Britt SELBY married Mary Ann ELIAS in 1859 in Woolwich. Her father was named as John ELIAS, butcher, on the marriage certificate. Unfortunately Mary Ann died in 1865 (aged 37). I can't find any children of this union to date.
When Mary died William moved to Everton, Liverpool despite his roots being in Kent/Sussex. Why??? Did he take any offspring to Everton to be brought up by Mary's parents whilst he worked?

Can anyone help?, as I keep hitting brick walls with the ELIAS name.

Katherine Drotar Elias

I have hit a brick wall trying to get information on my grandmother. I have a copy of the marriage application, but it has little information. Katherine married my grandfather in 1916 in Mckeesport Pennsylvania, less than a month after his first wife died due to complications of child birth. The application shows that she was a widow of Elias (no first name). Her maiden name was Drotar.

An insurance application shows that she had two sisters, one
in McKeesport and one in Europe. Both parents were deceased. Oral information from my mother implied that she had lived in the Chicago area (but not in Chicago) prior to marrying my grandfather, Michael Novotniak. The marriage application showed her residence as McKeesport. I don't know if she moved to McKeesport before or after her husband's death. A search of the Ellis Island site and a review of the passenger indexes for Philadelphia and Baltimore did not show and passengers for Katherine using the Drotar or Elias surnames.

I would appreciate any information that would help me scale this barrier.

Ron Svec

Re: James Cody Elias

In doing further research on this family, I now know the James Archdeacon of Norfolk, was not the son of Edmund and Ann Oldham Archdeacon/Cody. Apparently their son, James, is deceased by the time Ann wrote her will, on 19 March 1813, and probably by the date of a deed of 1809 (no day or month) but presented in court on 19 Mar 1810, when all the children either signed or witnessed the indenture giving Ann Oldham Cody the use of the 150 acres she lived on, for as long as she lives. In Ann's will, one of her heirs is Martha James Cody and the only child she could belong to is James. There is no mention in Ann's will of an Elias. Her will was presented for probate on 17 Oct 1825. There were no codicils added to it at any later date than its original writing. There is evidence James may have also gone to NC and lived in Caswell co near his uncle, James, who married Sarah Womack. Edmund Cody alias Archdeacon (as the Prince Edward co VA court referred to him, after his death) owned land in Caswell but never lived on it.

Essa Yusef (Joseph) Elias

My grandfather Essa J. Elias emigrated from what is now Israel but was then Palestine in the 1920's. I believe he was from the area known as Galilee. We were always told we were of Syrian Descent but we are likely Palestinians. My grandfather had a brother here in the states about whom no one seems to have information. They settled in the Joliet, Illinois area (about an hour outside Chicago). Anyone who might know of any branches of this Elias family, please contact me. Thanks! Felicia Elias (kept my name after marriage...)

Emily Augusta Ellias married James Bamber Gascoigne 1871 in New York. I would love to have an exchange with anyone working on this family.
