Elsie,
Thank you for the response. I have not been able to find anything about my grandfather of grandmother in Norway or when or where they came from. My Grandfather Andrew had a brother Edward who settled in San Francisco. He had a daughter Joyce who was blind. My fathers cousin on my grandmothers side was Borge Linglund?? He served in the Norwegian Merchant Marine during WWII and had two ships torpedoed off the coast of Argentine.
This must be the same Eliassen. His sister Rasmine was my great great grandmother. Anne Kristine was my great grandmother and was married to Hans Haldorsen. They had Einar, Alma, Johan, Ragna, Sigrid and Rikhard who died in infancy. It is my understanding that Hans Martin was a sailor and died overseas. I did not know that he was married and had children. Are you related to this family?

I saw your question in trying to find my father´s uncle Karl Kristian Eliassen (born in Onsøy, Fredrikstad on the 4 th of August 1887) who emigrated to Australia.(I did not find him). Amanda Gustavsen is buried together with her husband Karl Gustavsen on the churchyard of Gressvik by Fredrikstad (Field 13, row 14 grave nr. 011 + 012 for Karl). There were no dates indicated, but if you like, I can try to find the graves for you, if you have not already found out. I am often in Gressvik as I am born there and we have a second house there. My mail-adress is: bjelland@hotmail.com. Best wishes, Reidun Bjelland

If Reier can "Americanize" his name to Robert why do you doubt that a man actually known as Endre in Norway might be referred to as Edward in America? I'm only a tiny bit surprised that the family didn't refer to him as Andrew since it sounds so much more like Endre.

I'm not related to the family in any way and am not researching in the Hetland area of Norway.
In rereading my g-aunt's notes-Elen had a sister Inga Eliassen. Two brothers, Daniel and Lars Danielssen. Perhaps I have misinterpreted all these years-is this a mixed family? I have no dates on siblings-Daniel had a daughter Inga, too. Lars to Chicago, then on to Michigan. Re Nils and Lene, also had Kittel, Karen and Laura. Reinhart and Kittel came to Minneapolis. Marie married a Capt. Fjotland-he died young. Most of these were in St. Petri(sp)records. How did you learn so much? Have you been to Fjelberg? THANK YOU.

Only started reading parish records c. 1 year ago-found many of other side of family in the Domkirken i Stavanger. Thank you for education site-will read! Do not yet have Elen's b/d-soon! Marie/Maria 9/29/1860. I need to think outside the box more. I visited Reier's (Robert's)grave in Chicago last Oct. I am thrilled w/your help, had about given up.
The 1865 Norwegian census shows that Nils and Lene Nordaas lived in the city of Stavanger and that they had two children of their own called Marie and Reinhart.
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...

I don't find any female using name similar to Ellen Nordaas/Noraas in the 1865 Norwegian census.

But in the city of Stavanger a widow listed as Elen Eliasdatter has her two children living with her and they are also listed using Norwegian paronymic naming -
Marie Endresdatter and Reir Endresen. Their father can be expected to have been named Endre (surname/patronymic unknown). Elen comes from Fjelberg in Hordaland (north of Stavanger).
http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1865&...

Fjelberg is one of my ancestral family areas and since the census gives at least an approximate date of birth I'd like to look for her birth/baptismal record there to learn what Fjelberg farm her family came from. I'll look in the online Norwegian parish church records -- I will add another posting if I successfully find that record.

You are correct on several counts. I DO have a birthdate for Ellen Marie, and her wedding trunk w/date inscribed. Having just moved, these dates are packed away, but fairly accessible shortly.Ellen Marie (Eliassen) Noraass's children were born Marie-9/29/1862; Rier (Robert)-5/10/1859. Their father Edward Noraas died, unknown when, Ellen Noraas and Robert immigrated to the US in 1872; Marie remained in Stavanger w/Nels and Lena Noraas, and their children Marie (later married to Capt. Fjotland) Reinhart, Kittel, Karen & Laura. My Marie to US in July 1876. Any help? Noraas family had a mercantile in Stavanger-thanks!

There are farms in Norway called Hetland -- but YOU are probably looking for persons who lived in Hetland parish in Rogaland. It adjoined the the city of Stavanger and perhaps now is even a part of that city. The major church for Hetland was located in the city of Stavanger.

Without some birth years for the persons you are seeking I don't see any way to help you locate them.

The 1865 Norwegian census does show a young Reinhart Nordaas, born about 1861. There are a number of women in that general area called Elen... Elias....

"Lyeprige" might actually indicate Lye prestegjeld (clerical district) which might be abbreviated prgj. or prstg. The Reinhart Nordaas in Stavanger for the 1865 census is listed with a father who came from Lye prestegjeld.

My family is also from Rogaland. I don't know how many farms are called Hetland. I am also from the Stavanger area. The LDS family search center gave me a name of a lady in Norway named Tolv. Tolv went to bat for me and located my farm. She was a blessing and it didn't cost a nickol. I will see if I still have her email. If push comes to shuve I have shelled out the bucks but you may be able to crack this one in a very short period of time.

Once you find the Hetland farm the world opens up. Usually the farm tells you where your family came from before Hetland. You just have to go there and your family continues to extend its self. Don't worry about the language. Google has a translation website that is wonderful. They have Norwegian you lucky thing. When I was working on my Norwegian family I only had a dictionary and that was confusing. I still have not finished my research but it is still waiting for me.

Ray in the great Pacific Northwest (Vancouver, WA)

Ive known about the farmbooks for years-just didn't know much about which farms! and takes me forever to decipher Norwegian. My folks came from Rogaland county/fylke,and Stavanger/area, but several different farms. Lots from Hetland, though, and Lyeprige (sp). I am in Amarillo, Tx, and there is a LDS center here. Should I try that? Also, the Immigration Center in Stavanger will do some pro searching-is it worth it? I have some old original documents I can send copies of,and copies of parish records. Thanks more! Kathy

Before I tackled the parish register in Norway I tried the "Bygdeboker." It is arranged by kommune or municipality, not by parish. There are many Bygdeboker volumes and you can access them through interlibrary loan; OCLC Worldcat Firstsearch. There are a copy of libraries around the USA that have the complete collection. There is so much information in these books have your money ready for copying. AND you can't do it all in one day. There are web sites that teach you how to use a Bygdeboker. There is a slash through the letter "o." Now......do you know where you came from in Norway, such as, Rogaland or Telemark? You do know the farm and that is a biggy. Do you have a community, a sogn? If so you are ready to order and read about the different gards (farms). There is such a wealth of material and you also become asquainted with your ancestry because there is information written next to each head of the house. Remember....this is all in Norwegian and there are some great translation sites for you figure out what they are saying. So....get on the internet and start learning about farmbooks.

Ray-Names are mostly Americanized, provided by my great-aunt, now deceased. There should be another brother Daniel, but possibly w/a patronymic of Danielssen? Another marriage? How did you get the farm books? Wow! Parish records online finally helped on much of my family but slow going, not knowing all the parishes to check, and in Norwegian to boot. Thank you sooo much. Any info on Ellen Marie's parents? Lars did have a daughter Cecilia (sp?) as well-not sure where born-US or Norway, but died in Johnson home in Chicago. I have so little info.

Kathy,
Your gggrandmother Ellen Marie Eliasdatter was from the farm Hetland. Here are the given names for the females in my database. These names are the names furnished by Norwegian Farm Books; Kirsten Marie, Maren Elise and Ingaborg Oline "Lena". These sisters do have a brother; Lars Immaneul "Louis." Lars married Olina Skoland in New York. They had a daughter named Ruth. Are your given names Norwegian or an Americanized version?

Ray,
I have hit several brick walls. My gggrandmother Ellen Marie Eliasdattr was from Hetland-SOMEwhere. She had a brother Lars who came to the US-not sure when. She married a Robert(Rier)Noraas (Nordaas) who died and left her w/two children. She immigrated to the US in 1872. My ggrandmother stayed in Stavanger until 1876, then to the Chicago. Lars married in Norway, had a family, came to Chicago, then to Michigan. A daughter Cecilia died in Chicago-just not much info on this side.-Kathy
My grandfather's name is Lars Eliassen Hetland. He was born about 1819 in Jaederen. I assume this is Rogaland Amt. Hetland might be the name of a farm? Another account says at the time of his marriage to his wife, Ingeborg Tolvsdatter, about 1851 in Bratsberg Amt, he came from Christiansand.

I know the information is limited but any suggestion will help. Thanks in advance for any help.

Ray Peterson

Hello,
I am researching Griswolds and Ericksons from Penn. and NY. In looking thru some old paperwork I found a document made out to a Rolf Eliassen. This document is dated Jan 26, 1956 from the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company. I believe this railroad was headquartered in Bethlehem, Pa. The Erickson side of my family came from Sweden to Morris, Pa. then to Elmira, Chemung Co. NY. I have no idea how this came to be in this old paperwork or know of any connection to the Eliassen family. I would like to return this document to a relative if possible.

Thanks
Denise griswold-Hill

I have a copy of the census of 1900 in Bergen, My Grandfather. Karl Johan Eliassen was born in Aarstad in 1865 He and his wife Johanna and the four children are listedand your Eliassena are also there. They lived close to each other as my grandfathers' number was63582 and Hans number was 63595. Did Olav emmegrate in the early l900's or around l923? I recall my father had a cousin Olav Eliassen who came over about the same time we did. It would be inerwsting to see if there is a connection. Elsie
