There were so many John and William Fletchers in Clark and Montgomery counties along with a few more in adjacent counties that it's really confusing.

The William I think we're looking for came to Kentucky in 1883 as part of Rev. Elkin's "Providence Church" and is so listed in the church minutes still in existence. He would have to have been over 20 yrs old and probably much older. A John and a William Fletcher appear on the Madison Co. Tax list of 1800.

I've been trying to separate all the John's and Williams by ages--not easy.

Can you give us the date of the Will and the county? That might make it a little clearer.

Also, regarding the deed: There were two Reuben Elkins; one who married Rev. Rob't Elkin's daughter Sarah (b. 1783) in 1802, and the other was a son of Rev. Elkin's son Ezekial born in 1815.

Thanks, Mitzi

Hello Walker,

I have some information for you concerning John and William Fletcher being brothers. I have a copy some deed pages from Clark County, KY. At the top of list is my John Fletcher who bought and sold various tracts of land. Listed just below him is William Fletcher who sold land to Reuben Elkin, the son of Robert Elkin. I think we can assume that this William Fletcher is related to John who married the first Dully Elkin. The best document that I have to show that John and William were brothers who shared the same father, William Fletcher, Sr., is a copy of the will left by William! In it he divides his land between his sons named John, Jacob, Robert James and William, and he leaves money and such to his daughters named Betsey and Salley. He also leaves land in Boonesborough to his wife, Winifred. The will is filed in Madison County, KY and is dated 1792.

I hope this information is helpful to you in your search. If you have any information that may help me in my own search, please share it.

sisters4ever

Hi Sisters4ever,

I suspect your ancestor John Fletcher and my ancestor William Fletcher were related, perhaps uncle and nephew? Your Dully Elkin and my Dully Elkin were apparently aunt and niece.

Please tell me more about John and William Fletcher, Sr. What records have you found of them? I began to lose hope of determining which Fletcher family my William came from when searches of census records of Clark and adjacent counties revealed numerous Fletcher households. Since the first few censuses only recorded the first name of the head of household, and only age ranges for the others, there was little to go on.

I look forward to hearing from you. Any clue helps.

Thank you,

Walker Pierce

Mitzi,

I am a descendant of the first Dully Elkin and John Fletcher who married in 1798. This John Fletcher's father was named William Fletcher, Sr. and his wife was Winifred Garrett. Her father was Robert Garrett. It sounds like you may have information on this branch of the Fletcher family. If you have any information on this John Fletcher, or his father who was born in 1747 or 1748, please forward the information to me.

Walker,
The Elkins and Fletchers intermarried frequently in the early years. It's hard figuring out which Fletcher was which though since there as many Fletchers as Elkins all living near each other.

By the way, after William Fletcher died your Dully was married again to Granville H. Bush--her 2nd cousin--and she died in 1841 so she doesn't appear in the 1850 census. So as you see, she had two short marriages and died young at about 36.

To make things more complicated, it those days marrying a 2nd cousin was fairly common, and it wasn't uncommon to marry a 1st cousin! It was a small community of acquaintances and narrowed the mating pool.

More later..Mitzi

Thank you so much, Mitzi. This helps a lot. It's coming back to me now. Interesting that Dully, the daughter of Rev. Elkin married a Fletcher, and her niece Dully, daughter of Ezekiel also married a Fletcher. I imagine the two Fletcher men were related somehow. Thank you for looking for the will.

Walker

Hi Walker,
We've contacted each other before. Here are the 9 children listed in Robert Elkin's will:
Zachariah, b. ca 1769, VA,; m. Mary Fletcher, 11 Jun 1791 Madison Co.,
Nancy Elkin, b. 2 Jan 1770 VA; m. Allen Neil, 14 Feb 1788 Madison Co.,
Milly Elkin, b. ca 1775 VA; m. David Haggard, 26 Jun 1791 Fayette Co.,
Lucy Elkin, b. ca 1779 VA; m. Caleb Bondrant, 8 Feb1803 Clarke Co.,
Duly Elkin, b. ca 1781 KY; m. John Fletcher, 13 Sep 1798 Fayette Co.,
Sarah Elkin b. ca 1783 KY; m. Reuben H. Elkin, 12 Dec 1802 Clark Co.,
Ezekiel Elkin, b. ca 1785 KY; m. Nancy Ann Smallwood Acton (Ann S. Elkin)
Enoch Elkin, b. ca 1787 KY; m. Milly Haggard, 21 Jan 1808 Clark Co.,
Polly (Mary) Elkin ca 1791KY; m. John Martin, 15 Dec 1808 Clark Co.

I'm guessing Duly or Dully is probably short for Dulcina--a popular name at the time.

There is a second Dully Elkin, born 11 Aug 1807, who married a William Fletcher in 7 Feb 1826. This Dully Elkin, named after her grand-mother, is the daughter of Ezekiel and Nancy Ann S. Elkin. The bond was supplied by Ezekiel Elkin.

The difficulty here is that in the Clark Co. Marriage book there is a slip of paper with permission for marriage given by Rev. Robert Elkin and wife that was evidently misplaced and slipped into the book on the back side of the other information of this 1828 marriage.

It is obviously NOT supposed to go with this 1828 marriage of Dully and John Fletcher since Rev. R. Elkin did in 1922.

I'm trying to find my copy of Rev. Elkin's will in my Document's file, but I may have to re-write it from my hard copy since I had a computer crash several years ago.

I'll get back to you with the will.

Mitzi Allen

Hi Mitzi,

Do you have a transcription of the will you mentioned? I believe I made some assumptions a few years ago about my ancestor Dully Elkin who married William Fletcher in Clark County in 1826. I've been away from my research for a couple of years, and though I have tomes of photocopies of county records, including the marriage, I have much organizing to do. If memory serves, either Robert Elkin or Ezekiel Elkin signed the marriage bond, which led me to assume he was her father. But now I'm not certain it was the same Rev. Robert Elkin or another Robert. Can you tell me if Rev. Robert Elkin had a daughter named Dully (that may be a nickname) or a son Ezekiel?

Thanks for your help.

Walker Pierce

However, Mathew married Susan Allen in 1854. James was born in 1855. We believe James may have been raised at some point by a Catherine Phelps. I have more information. Please e-mail me.
I am related to David Elkin (elkan?) from the UK. He was my great grandfathers, brother in law (either married to his sister or his wifes brother I am not sure)! and I have the following story about him that was told to me by my uncle. i am not sure how true it is as some of the family dispute whether Abraham magensky would be incolved in something like this as he wasa high standing member of the community. Can anyone she any light?

In the 1920's whilst Abraham Magensky was working as a jeweller (in the UK), England came off the gold standard. This meant that the amount of gold in any coin, such as a sovereign was worth more in gold weight than the face value of the coin. So Abraham Magen travelled all over the country getting as much gold coins as possible, melted them down and sold them as gold ingots. The maid found that her room was very hot, as the boilers were on all day and night in the summer and called the police. David Elkan (possibly his brother in-law) was the ringleader. He got obnoxious with the police and the police officer hit him with his truncheon, which scarred him for life. Abraham was jailed for 3 months (hard labour) and fined £20,000, which he paid immediately. All the gold coins were confiscated and are still held by the bank of England.

I plumb forgot to put this board on "My Notifications" and when I got sidetracked by other research I forgot to come back and check it. I hope you're still out there!

I do believe that Rev. Robert ELKIN & Sarah are the parents of my Enoch that married Mildred "Millie" HAGGARD. And then Enoch & Millie were the parents of my Ezekiel ELKIN who married Sarah HAGGARD. (Trying to fit Sarah into one of the half-million HAGGARD families in Clark County has been a real hoot, let me tell you. Still haven't found her family, yet.)

I found a reference that reads, "Siblings to Enoch were Ezekiel, Zachariah, Nancy, Polly, Amelia "Milly", Lucy, Dully, and Sarah "Sally." Do you know if this is correct?

Thanks!
Juli

That's OK, Wendy; it seems every ELKIN family had at least one Enoch and one Ezekiel, doesn't it? If the Ezekiel you mentioned in your earlier post was the brother of Enoch, then that gives me my Ezekiel's grandparents - Rev. Robert ELKIN and Sarah. Was her maiden name REARDON, or is that what someone just put out there as a possiblity at one time and it's now being repeated as fact? I've seen both REARDON and unknown for Sarah.

I too am a descendent of Harmon David Elkins (Sr.) He would have been my great-great grandfather. I have been trying to establish who his parents are but all I can find is that he was from Virginia. I have the family Bible fron William Jackson Elkins, son of Harmon, that lists marriages and births, John Thomas and Noel Vietch. If you have any other information on the family, I would love to see it.
