So glad you managed to get the Marriage Certificate. You will find his father's name and occupation on the end of it.
Would it be possible to let me know what they were so that I maybe able to Identify them in my Database. Also the place of residence at the time of the Wedding. I know it was registered in Goole but does it give a place name?
Many thanks. Judy Elkington.

There is no charge for this.

After your address it will go to a page that asks you do you have the Name, Year, Qtr, Vol. and Page No. This is it.

Marriage Edward Elkington, 1950, June Qtr., Grimsby 3b 582

The cost in English Money is £9.50.
Let me know if it works or not.
Judy

Hi, I have found his marriage to Ruth W. Wolff which took place in Grimsby in 1950. If you send for his marriage certificate it would give you his father's name and his age at marriage. This would help you to place him in 1950 and would cost £9.50.
I also found this website for you which is absolutely Free to search. http://www.forcesreunited.org.uk/index.asp and if he was in the Dragoons in 1950 http://www.britains-smallwars.com/Canal/DRAGOONS.html
The marriage certificate would tell you if he was in the Dragoons when he married.
If you don't know how to get a certificate on-line let me know abnd I can give you an address.
Good hunting, Judy Elkington

Hi Victoria how fantastic to hear from you! Yes indeed Albert was my Grandad Thomas Harolds brother, so you and I are 2 x cousins (I think thats right?!) We also have a Florence Elkington (Florrie) to trace, she was their sister and hence our Great Auntie. She emigrated at the same time I think, and I have a surname, Berry, descended from her - a Len and Ellen, and they had lots of children, one of who - Brian Berry, Ive met when he came to England. They are all in Perth/NSW and I am longing to be able to come over and meet you all. Please keep in touch, my email is carjelk@aol.com also I am on facebook. love Caroline xx

Hi Caroline,

I'm descended from William Henry Elkington too.

My line looks like this:

William Henry Elkington
-Albert Edward Elkington <--- migrated to Australia 1912)
--Richard Thomas Elkington
---(my mother)

Have you had any luck tracing the family back further than William Henry? I've been trying to correctly identify William Henry's father/mother and have had little success. Any info you could pass on would be a HUGE help.

Regards,

Victoria
Sydney, Australia
Hi Judy,

I'm attempting to trace a member of the Elkington Family that migrated to Australia in 1912. I'm fairly certain he descends from the Warwickshire branch.

Albert Edward Elkington (b. 1884 Warwickshire; d.1965 Sydney)

I think his parents were William Henry Elkington and Elizabeth Daniel, but I'm not 100% certain. If you could confirm any of this for me it would be very helpful.

Hi Judy, so happy to receive your reply. My private email is carjelk@aol.com yes that would probably be the best way to be in touch! Just to re-iterate : My Grandad, Thomas Harold Elkington, and my Grandma, Jessie (nee Dobson), were out in Africa circa 1918 - 1920 something, my father James Oswald Elkington and my uncle Oscar NOrman Elkington, were born out in Africa. They then all moved to Canada which is where dads main memories of his childhood are, until they were sent to England to boarding School. I believe my Great Grandad Elkington was from the midlands, as are most of the Elkington/Dobson clan, being born in Aston. I dont think there would be any Elkingtons in Africa now, but my cousins and descendents would likely be around Birmingham/London, Ive already found a few of them on my tree which please feel free to view! Thank you so much again, it means a great deal to me now that my bloodline is "ended" so to speak. Regards, Caroline.

HI, I have been searching for many years for my relatives. My name is Caroline Jane Elkington, I am the only child of JAMES OSWALD ELKINGTON Born in Kenya, 1920. His father, my grandad, was THOMAS HAROLD ELKINGTON B appx 1888 in Birmingham, who married JESSIE DOBSON, my grandma.Grandads father was WILLIAM HENRY ELKINGTON born circa 1830's.
Hi, I should be pleased to help you all I can. My notes are not gleaned from any other trees but from church records, wills, family bibles, and records that go back to 1505. I afraid that the IGI is filled with Patron Submissions and incorrect data.
If you would be kind enought to send me your personal E-mail I would be happy to send you several generation records which I think will help you. Did you know that one of his sons went to Australia with the Army and married a maori princess. Another died of wounds whilst serving in India in the Army. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Judy Elkington.

Hi,

My husband’s 3X great grandfather is Dr. Francis Russell Elkington. Anna Sophia Elkington is 2X great grandmother. Next is Amy Elizabeth Orford who married George Walker Wesley Dawson. Then Hereward Francis, Hereward Graham and finally my husband James Graham Dawson.

Dr Francis’ parents on IGI are listed as John Elkington b abt 1774 and Mary Russell born abt 1778. John is listed as having father Joseph b abt 1739 and mother Sarah b abt 1743.

I have found Sarah 1790 (must be a transcribing error ….. probably 1797 parents married 1796), Mary 1798, John, 1799, John 1801, Joseph 1803, Charlotte 1805, Ester 1806, George 1808, Charles 1809, Henry 1810, and Charles James Checkley 1813. These children are all listed together as children of father John 1772 and mother Mary Russell 1775. In a couple of cases John’s father Joseph 1739 and mother Sarah Webb 1738. Sometimes parents are listed as simply John and Mary.

My dilemma:

Francis Russell Elkington is NEVER listed as part of the family. His birth year fits nicely though. Every family tree I check has Francis as part of this family but I do know we all copy from one another. Since Francis married in 1822, census records of his parents and siblings are of no use.

I live in Canada so I rely on ancestry.com and IGI records. I am hoping you can help me prove Francis fits into this family before I repost my tree.

Thanks!!!!!

Jan.

I have now finished the more or less complete works of the Warwickshire Elkingtons starting with the first three generations who were born in Oxfordshire and removed to Warwickshire from 15t05/1515. Most dates go up to the C20 century and as many moved to London those are included.

They have been sent to the Warwickshire Record Office who have accepted them. I will undertake look ups for anyone needing to know anything, but please send a date of birth in order that I may find them. There are a few names where the 'g' has been left out and one or two other mis-spellings.

Don't forget the Website www.elkingtonfamily.com where a lot of useful information is held.

Judy Elkington

I see you originate in Shawell. Part of my family - John Elkington - came to Newton Harcourt where he married Elizabeth Swynfen in 1610. He states he came from Shawell originally. Does he fit into any of the 16thC Elkington family tree that you have?

Hi
I have just posted the first three generations of the Oxford/Warwick Branches with maps on the website. You will find the root member of each tree with numbers and I am working on each branch up to 1911 and hope to be able to publish these soon.
They will also show branches of people moving to countries from all over the world so if you live abroad, I am working on your family. If you haven't sent me your tree yet, I would love to have it to correct and fill out my records. You can reach me throuygh the website.

You will find several foreign branches on the website under the heading 'Elkington Histories'.

Judy Elkington
www.elkingtonfamily.com

Wow, that is neat. I was just on the phone with my mom and for some reason I have been very interested about my family tree. One of my ancestors is Edward Elkington. He was from England, came over to the states and was an engraver for Mermod, Jaccard and King. My great grandmother is Rose Hill, the mother of my grandmother, Betty Heflin, who is the mother of my mom. Would love to hear more. Thank you. Laurie Hardin

Hello again Judy
Yes - you are quite right.
Queenie (real name Alexandra,I think) and Muriel were the two youngest in the family and were born after my father Herbert George.
Muriel died in 1996 after becoming a recluse for a good number of years, then went into a care home in Southampton, when I administered her affairs under an Order from the Court of Protection.
Queenie died a short time after. She had one son, Robert Sinclair, with whom I am still in touch. They lived in Southampton too, but moved to Alton. The family still live there.
Incidentally, my eldest uncle, also Walter, was a 2nd Lieutenant in the First World War. He was killed in April 1918 in France, but this doesn't appear on your WW1 list. I can provide some further details if you need some. (I have the letter sent to my grandparents by his Commanding Officer in France).
Thankyou again for your terrific help. Really good.

If you need the information, my grandparents, Walter and Agnes (née Heath) are buried in Southampton, and their youngest daughter Muriel is with them.
George Elkington died in 1953 at Bexhill, and Herbert Elkington (both were brothers of Walter) died in Bristol in 1955.
Although I personally knew grandfather Walter, and his brothers George and Herbert, I did not realise that there were three other siblings - Henry, Ada and Blanche (p12 of 1881 Elkington census at St Pancras, London)- unless I have got the wrong part of the family. Apparently my grandmother Agnes (Heath) was rather 'odd' and wanted nothing to do with any of the other members of the family - and that included George and Herbert (from whom I got the 'odd' comment)!

With kindest regards
David

Re: Fred Elkington Elkington

Hi,

I have now partially resolved this query, using FreeBMD and Google.

He changed his name from “Fred Elkington Gertsch” to “Fred Elkington Elkington “on 8 March 1939:-

http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/issues/34607/pages/1822/pag...

after his marriage, in the name Gertsch, to Ivy A R Walker in 1938 Q2, Surrey N.E. 2a, 318

and before the birth of his first son, Christopher John, in 1939 Q3, Hastings 2b 223

From the name of that son, and his own given name, Fred, his mother was very probably a daughter of Christian Gertsch, from Switzerland, who appears in the 1901 census, with five daughters and two sons one named “Frid”. She should be traceable via deduction from the GRO indexes and 1911 Census - Christian died 1911 Q4.

Fred Elkington was born in 1912, as previously posted, in the name Fred Elkington Gretsch, mother Gretsch, Fulham 1a, 154

As Fred’s father was obviously “Elkington”, the three children and any issue are genealogically Elkingtons, though the family has been missed by A.E.H.E.

So the question now is, who was the man who fathered Fred Elkington Gretsch/Elkington?

? Male Elkington & Female Gertsch
Fred Elkington Gertsch - 1912
Fred Elkington Gertsch m Ivy A R Walker 1938
Christopher John Elkington - 1939
Rosemary Ann Elkington - 1944
Alan Charles Elkington -1954

The easiest solution would be a birth certificate.

Don

Claudia,

I had meant to say

"Looking once more at the line you summarised, you also have a Richard (5) who cannot be shown to be a son of the Richard (4). Richard (5) was born 1505 - 1515.

Don

No worries, thank you for your reponse Don.

I should have said in my initial note that my information was based on sources received from several places. Some of which I do not expect to be 100% accurate, however I am certain that some are, as only one of the Elkingtons came to Australia and one of their sons only had one son, who inturn had five children who are all still contactable.

I would rather have the information correct so I do appreciate your responses and queries to ensure as I'm sure you and a few others have had researched this a lot longer than myself.

Based on your comments below, are you stating that Richard (3) was the father of Richard (4)?

Kindest regards
Claudia

Hi,

Looking once more at the line you summarised, you also have a Richard (4) who cannot be shown to be a son of Richard (3)born approx 1505 - 1510.

Perhaps you have taken the information from one of the erroneous trees circulated in about 2002?

Sorry for not spotting that in my first reply.

Don

Hi Claudia,

I would be very interested to know the source of your information regarding the first three generations of your tree as you have listed.

There is no known proven pedigree for Richard, your generation 4, although there have been several hypothetical trees in circulation showing a connection to William, and of William to Ralph.

It was suggested in "Early Records of the name Elkington" (taken from the book "The Elkingtons of Bath" ) that Richard may have descended from the Eltingtons of Eltington in Northamptonshire, but there is no evidence other than the similarity of the name, which also existed independently in a Lincolnshire family at that time.

Indeed, one could suppose that Richard was as likely of that family as of the Eltingtons, given the relationship of the Cropredy parish to the Lincolnshire church, and other thin crcumstantial evidence.

The above may not be what you would like to hear, if you want a "long tree" rather than one based on evidence.

Good luck in your research.

Don

Information on Elkingtons prior to 1419

Hello there

I am currently researching the Elkington descendants line on my husband's family.

So far I have achieved:

Brett Norman Elkington (18)
Maxwell Norman Elkington (17)
Normal Ernest Elkington (16)
Leslie Norman Elkington (15)
William Henry Elkington (14)
John George Marriot Elkington (13)
Thomas Elkington (12)
George Elkington (11)
George Elkington (10)
William Elkington (9)
Thomas Elkington (8)
Thomas Elkington (7)
Richard Elkington (6)
Richard Elkington (5)
Richard Elkington (4)
William De Eyelston Elkington (3)
Ralph Elkington (2)
Unknown Elkington (1)

Would anyone have information further past Ralph Elkington (1419), in particular the "Unknown Elkington" thought to be born around 1419 in Northampton.

If anyone can relate to the above line, I would also love to hear from you. William Henry Elkington came to Australia sometime in 1883-1885 and had 8 more children (he had 2 in Wales).

Kindest regards
Claudia
