Has anyone thought to try and track medical type conditions through the years? Like, sleep disorders, blood disorders, other medical conditions that seem to run down family lines?
Do certin Elkins lines have something the other lines dont have?

Hello,

My name is John Elkins, I also grew up in Virginia just outside of DC. My Aunt traced our family tree on the Elkins side back into the 1700's with pictures to. I have the collage she did of our family. Maybe we are related somewhere along the way. We have Indian in our family line also, we are related to George Washington by Marriage, and Elkins West Virginia was named after a relative who was senator of West Virginia.

anyone knowing anything about william elkins, lived in dayton, texas , his wife's name was pearl and had one daughter named margaret, she was married to a eddie cook. Found census of him in 1930. His father was born in Kentucky and his Mother was born in Indiana. He was also born in Kentucky. He was 52 at the time of the census. any Info would be helpful. He was my grandfather. Hey one more thing! I found this and it's pretty interesting:

"Pioneers of Dickenson County (Virginia) by History in the Holler... as told to E. J. Sutherland by Henry Keel at Clintwood on May 25, 1922... Some of the wheel-wrights in my community were the Hamiltons living in what is now Wise County. My brother-in-law, S. P. Buchanan, took up the trade too, his mother being a Hamilton. One of the best loom-makers was Armstead Elkins, father of Joe Elkins, who also made looms. Armstead Elkins came from North Carolina and settled on Cranesnest below my father's. He was an expert with a broadaxe, being able to hew out popular plank less that one inch thick. He did this with some plank which my father used in fixing his porch on the old house where I was born and reared on Cranesnest."

One more thing- I think he especially looks good to be Perlina's father because both he and John Rose are listed one right after the other in a long list of people who were requesting a road be built to make it easier to get to the court house, 1853 Russell Co. VA. Assuming they went around to collect signatures, it would make sense if Armistead and his son-in-law both signed their names one right after the other! :)

I was taking another look at this (in between baby screaming) and what I had noted in my file was that you didn't think that Armistead was Perlina's father. Did you find something that made you change your mind? I think it looks like he fits too.

Booker Elkins (B: 7 Jan 1848; D: 3 Jan 1929) was my great grand father on my Dad's side. He is buried on Lick Fork, Beefhide Creek in Pike Cty, KY) My father was Ervin Anderson (son of Myra Elkins and Leonard Anderson). My family also lived at Dorton. And Yes, it is still there and we try to go back once each year to see our parents graves. Send me your e-mail address and I will send you a picture of Booker.

Samuel Wade Elkins is the Brother of George Woodford Elkins who I am related to. I have information that my grandma Ida Elkins received from the California Elkins (Harry Elkins). They have James Meredith Wilson Elkins (Father of George and Samuel) Bible and in there are names and dates. I have a copy of a family group sheet.

I cannot tie your family to the Campbell and Anderson County, Tennessee families, but I feel sure there is a tie somewhere. I have no Edward Elkins but have two James M Elkins born in Tennessee, but can't tie them. Do you have any information about the a Tennessee tie or some time line for their getting to Missouri?

I am descended from Larkin and Catherine Elkins through their son Jesse. I have a letter from 1990 that was written to my grandmother by Wilma Smith stating, "While I don't have records of Larkin's parents and no Elkins in Sullivan Co., Larkin's sister (only one I know about) left death records in Lee Co., VA stating she was born in Sullivan County in 1788. It may have been an error as to the place of birth or maybe Larkin was born in Sullivan too. The sister, Nancy, married Thomas Vandeventer."

I have tried to contact Wilma Smith, though never heard back - so I don't know if she is not around or if I had the wrong contact information. I would love to know what this death record is. Have you heard of it?

Campbell County borders on Anderson County where I live. The Elkins appear to have come into TN through the Cumberland Gap and ended up settling, as farmers in Campbell County and then migrating to northern Anderson County, Anderson is adjacent to Roane County. My husband is from Roane County. Let me look at some info on Roane County and see if I can find a tie.

It looks like we are researching the same people. My great-grandfather was Joseph London Elkins. He married Mattie Landers. Their children are Henry Clay, Rosie Pearl, & my grandfather, Ivan Raymond. My grandfather said that Aunt Lucy married a Dodd and moved to CA. I found where Lucy Ella married Charles W Dodd in Bradley Co, TN. I have already contacted the lady that posted it and she said that a descendant of Thomas Elkins claimed it. Let me know if you want dates or more info.

Are you talking about Thomas C Elkins? His mom (Isabella Cannon) and dad (Andrew J Elkins) was married in Jefferson Co, TN then moved to Hamilton Co & Bradley Co, TN. A J Elkins: 25 Oct 1819 - 21 Dec 1897; married Isabella M Cannon: 24 May 1843 in Jefferson Co, TN. The 1860 & 1870 Census has him in Hamilton Co, TN & the 1880 Census has him in Bradley Co, TN. The family Bible has them from Georgetown, TN.

Children:

Amanda: 28 Apr 1844 - 12 May 1926. Never married.

Thomas C: 22 Nov 1845 - 15 Dec 1812. Married Malinda C ?: 24 Jan 1871. The 1910 Census has him in Tarrant Co, TX.

Mary J or Mary I: 12 Sep 1847 - 11 Aug 1865. Never married.

Louisa Jane: 6 Jul 1851 - 15 Jan 1909. Known as Jane. Married ? Capp: 4 Jan 1873.

William Columbus: 30 Dec 1852 - 16 Sep 1927. Know as Columbus. Never married.

James P: born 12 Oct 1855. Married Marle E ?: 22 Nov 1876. 1930 Census has him in McMinn Co, TN. Children: Luther W & Maude L.

Andrew J: born 11 Aub 1857. Married Sarah E Geren: 8 Nov 1877. 1930 Census has him in Cleveland, Bradley Co, TN. Children: William, Sim J, Myrtie J, Edward F, Edmond T, Nora B, Albert D, Mary E, Lucy M, Thomas C.

Sarah Rebecca: 28 Feb 1860 - 16 Jul 1884. Married H E White: 23 Dec 1883. No children. Died in Bradley Co, TN.

Lucy Ella: born 19 Oct 1862. Married Charles W Dodd: 31 Jan 1886. Children: Walter & Dessie. (According to my grand-dad, she wanted him to live with them in CA when his mom died in 1929.)

Joseph London (my g-grand-dad): 21 Jan 1866 - 17 Jun 1929. Married Mattie Landers: 8 Jun 1893. Children: Henry Clay, Rosa Pearl, Ivan Raymond (my grand-dad). He died in Dalls Co, TX.

Just going back through the entire elkins community and came across your post. Must have missed it when you came out with it.
Samuel W. Elkins was my grandfather's brother. I don't know much about those in the family that went to California. My Missouri family is tied to Tennessee through Samuel D. Elkins of Roane County, Tennessee. He moved his family to Missouri sometime between 1850 and 1856. His son, James Meredith was born in Pulaski County, Missouri in 1856. James Meredith is my g. grandfather. As near as I can find, Samuel is the son of William Elkins, also from Roane County. Samuel had three brothers: Thomas, James Franklin and Nathaniel. Their mother died and William remarried and they had six other children.

No I don't know anything about the Lee Co, VA death records, but it's someplace to start! So exciting to see my hunch that they were related may be right! I have info that says she died in Sullivan Co, TN and was buried at Mulberry Gap Baptist Church, VA. This is just what I have seen on the web, no source docs. I may have seen recently a different burial site for her, I will have to go back and look for it.

My great-grandfather was Sargent Prentist "S.P." Elkins. He was born in Pineville, McDonald County, Missouri. He was a Texas Ranger in the 1870's. In the early 1900's he moved from Texas to Tishomingo, Johnston County, Oklahoma, which was Indian Territory at that time. He died in Coal County, Oklahoma, and is buried in Tishomingo, Johnston County, Oklahoma. There is a memorial service honoring him as a Texas Ranger on May 16, 2009, at the Tishomingo Cemetery at 2pm. I hope this may help you, and I would appreciate a response from you. Thanks!!
