The “Elgerton” Family of the West Midlands

This family, which has living members, descended from James Elgerton and Mary Ann Watts, who first appeared in the Dudley District of Worcestershire and Staffordshire in the mid 1850’s.

The origin of James has now been traced back to Richard Elkerton’s BrickWorker family, of Leighton Buzzard, who themselves descended, as has been previously shown, from the Elkinton of Cropredy, North Oxfordshire.

The evolution of the name from Elkinton through Elketon, Elcuton, Ellgatton, Elkerton and finally to Elgerton demonstrates the effect of pronunciation on the recording of events.

In the Dudley Registers alone the name is recorded as Ellgatton, Elgurton and Elgerton.

regards

Don
Looking for my Elkinton Roots

I am trying to track down family members from my Elkinton side of the family. My Grandfather was Robert Ernest Elkinton, married to Billie Patterson date unknown. They had 3 kids David Allen, Michael Earnest and Stella Louise. All of which are now deceased. Stella is my Mother. My Grandfather lived in the Bay Area in California and I beleive he had a brother named Albert and a sister named Stella. He remarried to a woman name Cecelia. I have no other information as my Mom was not very close to her Father but would like to research for my children to know there history. I do beleive that my Grandfather was adopted and that his birth name is Bragiere.

Anyone who may have any infromation to pass on I would be very grateful.

Re: James H. Elkinton from Kansas married Mary Jane Norton

At last I have stumbled upon my ggrandmother's family. I knew they were out there somewhere. I am the great granddaughter of Martha Elkinton and James F. Walters.
I have recently found Martha in the 1880 census living in Miami, Miami Cty,Kansas. She was listed with her mother Margret, age 53 and siblings Albert, Harvey, Elfie (Nora Elfielda), George, and Mary E. I knew there was another child and now I know it was James H.
Martha lived with her son Otto Neal in Kansas City, MO after her husband died. She died around 1930. Also found this in the 1920 census for Kansas City, Jackson Cty, MO. She was not there for the 1930 census and Uncle Neal had remarried.
Martha's children, as many as I know, were Viola Ellen, William Emerson, Otto Neal, Ruth Marie, Clara Belle, and 'sonny' James.
I was having a problem finding them because most of them used their middle names. Martha's brother George spoke with an English accent and so did Uncle Neal.
My connection is through Viola Ellen (Walters) Rucker.
Please contact me at memcdonald@peoplepc.com and lets see if we can fill in more blanks.
