The “Elgerton” Family of the West Midlands

This family, which has living members, descended from James Elgerton and Mary Ann Watts, who first appeared in the Dudley District of Worcestershire and Staffordshire in the mid 1850’s.

The origin of James has now been traced back to Richard Elkerton’s BrickWorker family, of Leighton Buzzard, who themselves descended, as has been previously shown, from the Elkinton of Cropredy, North Oxfordshire.

The evolution of the name from Elkinton through Elketon, Elcuton, Ellgatton, Elkerton and finally to Elgerton demonstrates the effect of pronunciation on the recording of events.

In the Dudley Registers alone the name is recorded as Ellgatton, Elgurton and Elgerton.

regards

Don
Looking for my Elkinton Roots

I am trying to track down family members from my Elkinton side of the family. My Grandfather was Robert Ernest Elkinton, married to Billie Patterson date unknown. They had 3 kids David Allen, Michael Earnest and Stella Louise. All of which are now deceased. Stella is my Mother. My Grandfather lived in the Bay Area in California and I beleive he had a brother named Albert and a sister named Stella. He remarried to a woman name Cecelia. I have no other information as my Mom was not very close to her Father but would like to research for my children to know there history. I do beleive that my Grandfather was adopted and that his birth name is Bragiere.

Anyone who may have any infromation to pass on I would be very grateful.
