Looking for my grandfather's reativees

My grandfather, Andrew Elko, was born to immigrants who came from the Austro-Hungarian empire (later known as Czechoslovakia). His family was here for a short time and then moved back to Czechoslovakia.

Andrew Elko then returned to the U.S. alone and only had one relative here, his uncle Nick. That's the only family I've ever known on this side of the family and I have no records about any of his ancestry.

Does anyone know anything of this Elko family? I'd love to learn more. Thannks!

Andrew Elko of Michigan City IN killed in South Pacific in WWII

Andrew Elko of Michigan City Indiana was killed in the South Pacific during World War II. He is officially listed as missing or buried at sea. His name appears on the “Tablets of the Missing” at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. We are seeking information regarding his military and civilian life.

I am a retired Hoosier from Madison County residing in the Philippines with my Filipino wife. We are seeking family and military information about servicemen from your county killed in the South Pacific during World War II. There are 17,206 Americans buried here and thousands more that are missing or buried at sea and are honored on the “Tablets of the Missing”. Please visit our website to see the beautiful memorial located in Manila, Philippines.

http://fizkid.tripod.com/

My wife and I visited the cemetery as visitors and left with a mission in our heart. We have been taking photographs of the graves of the Indiana servicemen buried here and have been uniting them (at no charge) with their family members in Indiana and across the United States. To receive the photo of your family member, neighbor or friend all you need is a working email address. We do not send them to regular mailing addresses due to the costs. Please help us find the families of the men that might still be living. Our project is only successful because of teamwork and your contributions are noted on our website. If you wish to help us we will be pleased to add your name to our ACKNOWLEDGMENT page on the website. The obituaries usually did not appear till to three months after the death date.

If you are not a genealogist you can help by just picking up the telephone directory and find someone with the same last name and give them a call. It has worked many times for us.

Zenas5@yahoo.com

Sincerely,

Dave and Apple Dwiggins
San Pablo City, Philippines

Hi Donna:
I just want to let you know that I am a descendent of the Elkow family (Fedor and Wasylina) who arrived in Canada in the early 1900's. Fedor was born in 1868 and Wasylina was born in 1876. They had a daughter Anna who was born in 1900, who is my grandmother. They had 10 children all together, and settled in the Two Hills/Musidora area. I have no idea where they immigrated from but do know from documents, that they departed Liverpool on May 27, 1902 and arrived in Montreal, Canada by steamer (S.S. Lake Manitoba) on June 6th, 1902. Hope this information helps you in your search. Would love to hear from you on this matter.

Carolyne Kuzio

My husband's great grand parents were Wasyl and Vasyllina Elkow (also spelled Ilkuf on homestead records)and came to Canada in the early 1900's. They settled around Two Hills, Alberta and some descendants still live in the area. They came from Nadvirnia, Ukraine and when we were in Ukraine this year, we found that the name there was Ilkif. We met an Ilkif there, but he wasn't related, we think. I would like to corrrespond with any Elkow's or Ilkif's who came from Nadvirnia, Ukraine.

Donna Mazur
Kamloops, BC

Try that route and I will ask my family if they have any information on Anna Elko. I let you know if I find anything...Good Luck...
