From the research I have done on my husbands surname "Ellands", I believe it does come from Elland. There are a quite a few othe variants of the name and probably originate from the town of Elland in the UK.

I don't know why i am seeing these replies now, nearly a year later. I do have information on Matthew's children. I have a diary of sorts written by one of his children from his first marriage. It lists names and date of his brothers and sisters and his half brothers and sisters. Also who they married and their children. I can send you the information if you want.
I don't beleive their was an Agnus but his daughters names from his second marriage were Irene and Doris. Doris as i mentioned is my grandmother. She and her husband Horace lived on Superior street in Mimico right next to one of her brother's house. If you are the Leslie that i think you might be i beleive that would have been your grandfathers house on your fathers side. Pam
Pam

Hello Melissa, My name is Scott Ellands.
I found something you might be interested in. You were looking for meterial on George Ellands I know of a man named Private George Urville Ellands. His regimental number is 3204245. He was born Jan 6 1895. His father was also George Ellands. So I'm thinking there must have been 3 generations for sure because it would be highly unlikey for him (your George) to father a child at the ripe age of around 90.
The Private I spoke of was my Dad's Great Uncle, Dad was named after him. Or so My Dad told me. I hope this helps with further searches.

Pamela; sorry (for both of us) that you didn't have the tree. I'm not entirely sure that all 'Elands' are related, as there is some question as to 2 places in England with similar names - Elland in West Yorkshire and Ealand in Lincolnshire.

If you are looking for historical reference, if I'm wrong and we're all related then have a look at a search of 'Elland Feud' or 'd'Eland'/'d'Elland' on the net - (http://www.halifax-today.co.uk/specialfeatures/triviatrail/e... and http://members.tripod.com/~midgley/feud.html have especially interesting information!)

I would be interested in speaking to anyone who has Eland information in 1700's and 1600's or can work out how the various disparate Elands inter-relate. My lineage goes back to Bubwith, East Riding of Yorkshire. And the furthest back I get to is a George - married to Mary and with a son, John. John was b.1799

The information i have does not go back farther than Matthew and Frances (whos father was Henry Tetley). Matthew (son of John & Jane Eland)was born in Malton, Yorkshire on Aug. 19th, 1843...in or around 1863 he moved to Leeds and was married to Frances (Stanningley, Yorkshire) in 1864. I have a lot of information on Matthew and Frances and Matthew's next wife Emily Hopkinson and the following generations. However I have been unable to link anything further back. My mother had a family tree that showed generations back but unfortunately after she passed away my step-father wasn't to kind about letting us have any of her papers. I remember as a child seeing this tree and on it was noted that at least one of the Eland's in our line had been Knighted or given some sort of royal title but that was when I was much younger and I can't remember all the details.....Pam

OK, all... hope some of this helps.

Elands, historically at least, seem to be French in origin (the d'eland/d'ellands). The town of Elland in West Yorkshire, UK is named after them (they were Lords of the manor) and they had something to do with Edward II - looks for information on the Eland or Elland Feud. (http://members.tripod.com/~midgley/feud.html for more information)

The information I have is that, following this feud, the male bloodline decamped from Yorkshire to the North East of England, which would explain Northumbrian Elands.

Of course, the 'Eland' name may come about because our ancestors were from Eland, or something altogether different. Anyone with additional information - please let me know

I personally am related to the Elands from the East Riding, around the town of Selby (not a long way from either Malton or Leeds, nor Howden where some other Elands appear to have been in the early 1800s).

I am currently looking to find out more about Cyrus Eland (b. around 1841, Bubwith). I believe his middle name was Septimus (but some records have it beginning with 'j') and I believe his parents to be John Eland and Ann Eland (m.1821, nee Knapton). Cyrus' son, John Knapton Eland was my great grandad.

If you have any further information for me, please let me know - Jon Eland (jon[at]hotmail[dot]com)
Hi Michael

Edwin Eland is my grandmother's half brother. I have a diary Edwin wrote describing his life and family histor, Growing up in Yorkshire and then emigrating. His first wish was to go to New Zealand but his father, Matthew, thought he should go to Canada instead. He sailed on Oct. 23, 1902 on the Corinthian a ship of the Allan liner company. He reached Quebec on November 2nd. This diary was written for the Mimico Fireside Club. In this diary is also a poem he wrote and sent to Winston Churchill, there is a thank you note from Mr. Churchill's private secretary (the signature is hard to make out but looks something like W. Sturdee or Sturdll). I also have some clippings that include a bio of Edwin. If this bio is the same as yours it starts like this "In 1902 a young yorkshire lad came to Canada......" i also have clippings of articles my great uncle wrote and family history and such ....i grew up in Etobicoke with is not far from Mimico (still think of that area as Mimico) my grandparents lived in a house on superior ave,#72 (which my grandfather built). My grandmothers sister married Charles Rush, they had a house right on the lake and that house is still standing. If you know the area the house is right beside Amos Waites Park. In fact his son John taught me to swim. in fact nearly all of my relatives lived in the Mimico area........let me know if you have a different bio. A lot of my clippings are not dated.....Pam

Michael

I am sorry i only have some clippings and items written by Edwin Eland the founder of the Advertiser. There used to be a Mimico Library..don't know if it is still in exsistence but i would think so. Since it is in the area perhaps they have some information on microfische (spelling ?). But as to an actual paper i wouldn't know. Why the interest if i may ask?
Pam

Pam,
I do not know much about the Elands-I have them connected to the Johns family who I am told came from St. Catherines Ontario, Canada. I do know that in the same family plot in Illinois there are Elands buried. I am supposing they were related to the Johns family. Does the Johns name ring any bells?

All my Eland roots start in Yorkshire perhaps we have a link.
I have lots of information on Matthew Eland that married a Frances Tetley and their children and their childrens-children. Matthews second wife was Emily Hopkinson and i have information on them and their children and as above their children's children. Matthew and Emily were my grandmother's parents. Her name was Doris Eland. If any of this fits please email...even if it doesn't fit please email...Pam

My company is Eland Logistics (www.eland-logistics-com if interested) and when I was at Busch Gardens some time ago they had a head of an 'Eland' mounted on the wall. I just have to have one for my office and have been looking for one ever since.

Well then you would have to be my cousin (2nd or 3rd). Let's figure out how.
My grandmother was Doris Eland before she married my grandfather Horace Stansfield. Doris and Horace (yes i know they ryhme) had my mother Muriel. Now Doris's mother, my greatgrandmother was Emily Hopkinson, second wife of Matthew Eland. They (my greatgrandparents) had four children together, let's see if i can get all their names without tracking down the book......Doris, Irene (youngest) and Frank and Matthew. Matthew (greatgrandfather) had ten children, by his first wife, four children died. Edward was a son by the first marriage and i have his journal. There is a lot more date and information about who married who and there children. If i remember Leslie is Frank's(my Mother's first cousin, son of Frank and Margaret Howie) daughter ? Are you the son of Clifford?...........Pam

Hello,
There is not to much more I know about the Elands. I am looking for info on my grandfather Arthur Johns and ran across this name when in the cemetary and is listed on his card as being buried in the same plot. I am guessing that they are brother in law and sister or similiar. I was not fortunate enough to have known much about him or his family. Basically I know he was British, born in Canada and came to America to live. Why I have no clue. But if you would have any info it would be of great help.
Lois

Debbie,
After receiving your message today I decided to look into the message boards, again. I am surprised to see you also are related to Elands. My Arthur Johns is too related to Elands. I have not figured out how, thought maybe it was through marriage. I have an Eland buried in the same pkot as him and his wife. Also another interesting fact, arthur and his first wife had a set of twins that died.
Please contact me:
Yoshi@dellsnet.com
Lois

I'm not really affilliated with ELAND buy my mother told me her maiden name was MILLAND all my life. It was not until she passed away that I ordered her birth record only to find that Agnes E Johns was her mother and Howard C Koons was her father. Never did she tell me that KOONS was her maiden name. However, she did tell me that her mother's name was Johns and then StJohn. Agnes Reed married Jacques Bernerd or Bernard StJohn who was killed in the war and then Agnes came to US from England Via Canada in 1920 or so. I can't find that Agnes was ever married to Howard C Koons (C = Clarence) or that Agnes was her true Name....Agnes E Johns was listed on the birth record born June 16, 1889 or 1890 but my mom said many names of her mothers. I never met this grandma but i know she died in Billings, Montana in September 1941 as I located her obitiary...I just found my one and only relative of my mothers. My mother's sister's child (my cousin) this is how i found Agnes' obit. by the way Agnes' family in England supposedly disowned her after she married the family's chaueffer. I don't know this to be a fact. p.s. Agnes' mother was also a twin. please e-mail me Andrade1225@aol.com

My Grandmother was Agnes..Several different names listed on both my mother's birth certificate and her sister's birth certificate. Agnes E Johns, Agnes Taneborn, Agnes Reed, Agnes StJohn, Agnes Johns, Agnes Koons...Agnes came to US from England Via Canada...Around 1920 - 1922 to see half brother in Ohio. My mom said her maiden name was Milland but I found her maiden name after she passed away to be Koons. Please read past posts from me. Thank you, Debbie...Please e-mail me Andrade1225@aol.com Since you have an Agnes and I read all your past posts and replys for Agnes...Thank you, p.s. Ellen was suppose to be a 'bad-luck' name as her mother or grandmother or GGgrandmother passed away with lock jaw...I believe her mother's name was Mary or Margarite or her grandmas name was Ellen or Eleanor or Elaine..there were generations of this name I was told. P.S.S ...twins ran in the family...One of the half brothers or cousins had a set of girl twins with very pretty names llike Charmaine and/or Charlene or something..One little girl was very pretty or prettier than the other twin. (how unusual.lol) also Agnes was said to have a set of twins that died. My mom's sister also had a set of twins, they too passed away sadly enough...The set of twins that Agnes had was during the war in England when food was scarce. Thank you, Debbie Rumor had it that the family disowned Agnes because of her marriage to Jacque StJohn or John B Johns.
