Hi -

My gg grandfather George Ellard, ba ca 1866 was born in Mallow. He married Ellen Courney in 1890 and emigrated to Cambridge, Mass soon after. My grandfather Sean/John Ellard was born in Cambridge in 1891. They then returned to Cork and settled in Cork City, in Horgan's Buildings, and had Mary, Francis, George and Kathleen from 1893 to 1904. Sean/John emigrated to Brooklyn in the late 1920's where he married Nora Crowly (also from Cork City) and had my father George.

If this matches any info you have I would love to discuss it more.

Catherine Ellard
ellardsimpson@gmail.com

Am interested in hearing from anyone with ELLARD roots in Cork (Parishes include but NOT limited to...Buttevant, Kilworth, Glanworth, Doneraile, Shandrum, Fermoy, etc) Have collected a large amount of Ellard Birth & Marriage info from Ireland along with Birth, Marriage & Death info from Massachusetts and New York and some info from Canada (specifically Newfoundland and Nova Scotia). Trying to tie all the pieces together and figure out how we are all related. Anyone with any info on ELLARDs originating in Cork (stories, dates, pics, etc) please contact me at sfpboston@yahoo.com so we can share and try to fit the puzzle pieces together. Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you.

Scott
Hi I'm Claude F.Ellard Jr. My Grand father and mother William Newt Ellard and Lee Kinsey Ellard 1900 census Shackelford County Texas, on various docs. my g/father listed his birth place as Tx/ Ok/Ga and Al. We are unable to find any record of him or g/mother prior to 1900. There is an old family story of Cherokee connection via Oklahoma. G/father's, father's name only listed as Mr. Ellard birth place Unkown, mothers maiden name as Lee McKinley birth place Oklahoma. That's all we have for their past. Thanks Claude F. Ellard Jr.

Martin Ellard -> New York 1852

Martin Ellard emigrated to New York in 1852 "with my father" (according to a much later US census). He was born 11 Nov 1839 in Ireland, and married Eunice Margaret Woodin in 1860 in Erie County, New York. He died in Gordon, Sheridan, Nebraska in 1900. Martin and Eunice had 6 children, including my gggrandmother, Mary Harriet Ellard White. I know quite a bit about Martin (all of which I am willing to share), except where in Ireland he and his father came from, and his parents' names. If anyone has any leads that you are willing to share, I would be very grateful.

Ellard Florida/Alabama

I am looking for information on Charles Ellard and his ancestry particularly related to Indian (Apache heritage). He was born around 1892 and married to Emina Harrison. His son was Claude Ellard who married Jane Barnhill. There is some thought in the family that he was placed with his siblings in the family of William Garrett, after the Apache's were moved from their reservation in the 1800's. Any information would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Sarah,
My grandmother 'May',used to be an Ellard and married William Matthews. I'm not sure of her birth date but it would have been around 1908,she died in 1975 I think. however she had several siblings including, Lil, Edith, Tom, Charlie, Jack, George & Francis. They were all Ellards. I am in contact with May's nephew Brian Ellard who tries to fill in some gaps for me and is my dad's cousin. We live in Australia so makes it hard to find out any info.
Would love to hear back from you if this sounds like your relatives.

Best wishes Jayne Matthews

Background on Christ's Hospital, London

Despite its name, Christ’s Hospital was not a place for those who were ill, but rather a school for orphans and other destitute children. Here they were instructed in reading, writing, and arithmetic, the basic skills necessary for them to make a living on their own. The children at the Hospital wore long blue coats with silver buttons bearing the image of their Founder, Edward VI, and therefore came to be called “Blues.” From the beginning in 1552, both male and female children were admitted, making Christ’s Hospital one of the world’s oldest schools for girls.

Apprentices for America

For over two centuries, Blues were in high demand as apprentices to merchants, craftsmen, and other colonists throughout Britain’s growing empire. The first of them came to Jamestown in 1607, and they continued to come, even during the Revolution, even during the War of 1812. Many a Virginia planter or a New England merchant “sent back” to Christ’s hospital for a boy (or girl) who could write clearly and “keep accounts.” All the Blues could meet those criteria; and handwriting especially was so rigorously taught by the masters, and so well learned by the students, that the distinctive Christ’s Hospital “hand” was often specifically requested. In addition to what we would today call their marketable skills, the Blues enjoyed another advantage as apprentices for the colonies: because they were orphans and other low-ranking members of society, they had very few ties to families or lands to hold them in England.

Read more: http://colonial-america.suite101.com/article.cfm/christs_hos...

Re: John Ellard, Child Apprentice from England sent to US -Follow UP

I haven't had a great deal of luck finding more information about John Ellard, but I discovered that Humphrey Bell was a merchant in the Pamunkey River area of Virgina, but he did business as far as Amelia County (about 50 or so miles, I think. I'm using Google Maps as a rough estimation tool).

There are records in the Amelia Co. archives showing that Humphrey Bell would often play the role of a bank to local farmers in the area. Humphrey would pay a farmer's bills throughout the year and hopefully the farmer would yield enough tobacco (or other crop) to clear his debts with Humphrey. There are a couple of court cases in Amelia County filed by Humphrey Bell against farmers who were unable to clear their debts.

No mention of John Ellard yet, but will keep trying!

John Ellard, Child Apprentice from England sent to US

Like many of the people on this board, I've been trying to find the link between the US and UK Ellard branch. I've been trying to find information on a Samuel Ellard, born around 1720 who (possibly) came to the US in 1747. It's been suggested came as a prisoner.

Well things have come full circle as I have immigrated to England and have been trying to follow up on Samuel Ellard with the dates supplied, but haven't found anything at all. However, I did find information about a JOHN ELLARD in a book detailing Child Apprentices from Chirst Hospital in London who were sent to the U.S. colonies.

According to the record, John Ellard was baptised 11 Aug 1717 and was the son of Edward E. Ellard (feltmaker) and Mary E. He was admitted from St. Giles Cripplegate (London) on 04 Aug 1732 by his mother to serve Mr. Humphrey Bell of London, who was a merchant in Virgina.

These dates are very close to the ones suggested for Samuel. Certainly we might view an apprenticeship like a prison sentence because an apprentice was bound to serve many years and they received no pay!

I will continue to follow up with John Ellard and see what I can find, although I do not have access to the US records anymore since I'm with ancestry.co.uk; I can't afford the worldwide membership! But I personally think this is a very exciting find...I'm sure there are many Ellards on the other side of the Atlantic who will also express an interest in finding out more about John.

FYI - My G-Grandmother was Nellie Ellard, b. 1891 in Alabama and d. 1976 in Texarkana, Arkansas.

Gustav Gensch was my Great Grandfather, too! My Grandmother was Helen Gensch, who married Francis Edgette and gave birth to my mother Frances Edgette Moran. My mom and her first cousin, my Aunt Dot, (Dorothy - daughter of Irene Gensch) have told some interesting stories about Maggie Ellard. It seems she was partially blind, due to a treatment for a headache that went awry when she was a teen. I never knew her father's name was Luke, but apparently he tried to treat her headache with a mustard plaster placed on her forehead, and the mustard mixture got into her eyes and blinded her. Did either of you ever hear anything about that? Also, Maggie gave birth to her youngest child when she was 52 or 53 years old.

The cemetery is by Jefferson Mem. Gardens in the B'ham to Trussville area. I am an alternate trustee to this cemetery. I was moved there from near the b'ham airport. The cemetery was deeded to the his sons and their decedents of W.W. Ellard who dies in 1897. The cemetery and road that Cindie mention is not the same cemetery however in the same line. The road named Ellard is the road where Felix Jonathon Ellard was shot and killed after meeting with the governor to discuss lawlessness. Felix was the son of William Washington Ellard Born Sept. 29, 1821. You can do a search on new parers to find info.
You can contact me about the cemetery at 205-661-1880 my
name is Terry Ellard
Texas death record lists Glen Owen Ellard, died 4-11-1983 in Moore Co., Texas. SS death index gives his birth as 13 October 1906. Hartense (Hart) Ellard obit is on line if you need it. Glen, Hartense, Joe, and Peggy are listed in the burials at Dumas Cemetery, Moore Co. It is noted that he was issued his SS card in Oklahoma, so he might have been born there, though it is possible he was born somewhere else and lived in Oklahoma a while. He is not listed in any of the 6 or 7 Ellard lines I have, and so far I have not been able to learn more about him. It would be helpful if he could be located on a census, but I do not have access to them on line; he likely lived in his parents home in 1910 and 1920. You can email me if you want copies of the above information. richjoy@vvm.com

Ellard, Stuart

Looking for information regarding Anna Myra and Frances Stuart, mother maiden name Ellard. Anna was born 2/21/1878 in Sacramento, Calif, and died in 1950 in Calif. She married Theodore Schwab and had 4 sons. Frances birthdate and death date unknown. Anna's obit states that she is survived by a sister Mrs. Frances Stewart. We were told that the parents died when the girls were very young. We have not found them on the 1880 census.
