Jennifer,

You know this is story of Mom's is completely untrue. Thomas Mitchell Matthews is our grandfather. Love you, Sis. We need to get rid of the lies of the past and get on with the present and our futures. It is hard, admittedly, when your own mother sows lies into your life and intentionally keeps you separate from people who could challenge her legitimacy. The truth is Mom was a pot-smoking hippie in the '60s. Her mother and father (Mitch and Lonita) didn't know what to do with her and were embarrassed of their daughter's behavior. So, the records at Boles Home indicate that she was put there in the Summer of 1965. Shed met Dad, got knocked up and had to marry him. Our brother, Steven, was born shortly thereafter. You have to let this go.

Your grandfather Forrest is my uncle and the brother to my mother Katherine Ellars Sharpe. There are a lot of Ellars around central Ohio. Greg Ellars who lives at 98 Shady Ave. London Ohio would probably be your best source of information. You may call him at, 740-852-9248.

Connie,
Kinda new at this,my maternal grandmothers maiden name was Ellars and she is from Bookwalter, South Charleston,South Solan area of Ohio. Her father passed away when she was very young. We think his first name was Jason. She was one of several, Pauline, Laura, Mason, Jason, John, Callie and my grandmother Ethel Geneva. We are also aware of of a step daughter Eleanor Taylor, We are still in contact with Laura's family in the Springfield - South Charleston, any information you might have would be very well received by my 82 year old mother,

Susan Saylor

Pat,
My only information I started with was from family records (a letter from the grandaughter of John Malden Jones) that John Malden Jones (b: KY) married Martha Ellars (b: OH). They had a son, John Warren Jones (b: 1862, IL). Also, Douglas Co, Illinois keeps coming up. My Grandfather, George Jones, lived with his family (headed by John Warren Jones) in Bourbon in 1900, and in Bowdre in 1910. My mother was also born in Tuscola in the 1920's, I'm convinced that this was because George's relatives were up there. However, the more I research, the more I am believing that there is something wrong in our family records...things just are not panning out. The only way that this could be the same Martha Ellars is if she and John Malden Jones had their child (John Warren) in 1862, she divorced and remarried to Mr. Jacobs in 1863. It's a longshot.

I can't find any online cemetery records for Bourbon or Tuscola. Do you know of any?
Thanks for writing back,
Mark

I found the 1870 census that has Martha A & Charles Jacobs with 5 children - Veratus P.(age 7), John W (age 5); Carty A (age 3) and Viona & Mary age 1.
Martha died 1885. Charles Jacobs remarried in 1892.
I could not find anything about a divorce or a John Malden. There was a person who posted alot of information in 2001. There e-mail is cweaver391@aol.com. Don't know if they are still active.

There were also many Martha's in Family Tree.

Why do you think this is the same one?
Pat

Thanks for the info! I guess you have not seen any indication that there was a previous marriage to John Malden Jones, with at least one child, John Warren Jones, born in 1862. If you find anything, please let me know. If not, there must be another Martha Ellars somewhere in Illinois during that same timeframe. What a coincidence!
Mark

To Paul Benders, Dottie Gregg, and others,
I am researching my g-g-grandparents, Martha Ellars (b:Ohio), who married John Malden Jones (b: Kentucky) and lived in the Bourbon, IL area. Both were born around 1840.
Martha Ellars is one of the daughters of Benjamin Ellars, sister of Eliza. Is it possible that "your" Martha Ellars married John Malden Jones and then divorced and remarried Mr. Jacobs? I'll be glad to share the little information I have on the Jones side of the family.
Thanks,
Mark Stewart
I'm helping someone research this family. Hope you have info about Mark's parents, brothers and sisters.
Nice catch - you're right, wrong war.
I confirmed his birth as 18 SEP 1959, in Painesville, OH - Father: Ronald F ELLARS, Mother: Jenny CURTISS (second wife he married in the early 50s)
It appears the entire family history centered around the Painesville area. Mark ELLARS currently lives in the family home in that town - so it's unlikely they link to your family.
The military record that I know of says he was a Marine, was injured in a grenade accident, and received a medical dischared. Probably the Vietnam war, but he might have been stationed at other places in Asia or Europe.

Hello Jim, There is something amiss with the date or with the date of the theatre of war?
You have Born 18 Sep 1959 and WWII Vet?
AT any rate there are not very many Ellars", I still don't have a line on them myself and my father(deceased) was an Ellars before he changed his name. Yes, he was from Ohio, in the vicinity of Xenia, Jamestown and South Solan.
If you could reconcile the date of birth with the duty period, maybe that would help? Treasa

The only reason it caught my eye, is that I have alot of military in my family and something was wrong. You know, I am not so sure that there is not a connection. My mother's family homesteaded in Ohio( Carney, Bethel etc.), the name Curtiss, seems familiar but it might be on my mothers's side.
She does remember at times, some of the most remarkable data- out of the blue. I just jot it down and add it to the record in hopes that it will all come together.
As I indicated her side of the family kept very good records, dad's side did a bad job! Nice to talk with you. Treasa

Hello Bill, I can see that I'm very late with this. I've been attending college and don't have enough time for all my other interest. As far as I know , we don't have any Ellars' that made it to Cal. Ours seem to be all from Ohio. In fact my father was the only one in his family to leave Ohio. What I have on them is very, very limited. Thanks for the trying. I wish my branch had got to Southern Cal, 70 or 80 years ago. Do love the weather there! Treasa

Hi P Schultz,

Yes - still here. Thx for the reply. I would be interested in your picture and any other information - by chance taken around his home or property? Working back thru deeds on my home - I know Dr. L Ray Ellars purchased the home and property from Ida Sims in the early 40's (who inherited the property from her father Richard Skinner in 1896). I have seen a map that dates the house/homestead back to 1840.

I have spoken to a Kenneth Jaegers, who lives in Louisville, KY that is the son-in-law of one of the daughters. I need to catch back up with him as he had said he had many fond memories of our place and actually had a architect's drawing of all the outbuildings that were erected after his purchase. We do have an architect's drawing of the greenhouse (that needs alot of repair) on our property.

We are thinking of submitting our home to the National Register of Historic Places - as the Skinner/Sims/Ellars House - a compilation of historic pictures and information would be helpful to us in our submission that we are gathering.

Thx for a reply,

Shawn Riedling

They had 2 daughters Rosella Jane (Ellars)Jaegers and Mrs. Mary Ellars Carfield. L. Ray passed away on 9/22/54. He was a practicing doctor and lived in Prospect, KY on a gentlemen's farm.

Anyone have any connections to the history on these folks?

Thx,

Shawn

Received the information from the message board: orginal information was in 2000.From Susan Ellar-Carder and Pete Ellars. As I previously stated my grandfather was 'Roscoe Conklin Ellars married to Bessie Francis Leach. My father was named (Troy Ellis) aka Everett R. Ellars. As much as I have tried I have had little to no success in tracing my fathers people. I did know the immediate uncles and aunts (all deceased) . They are all from around Xenia, Ohio. If you have any other information that would be great.

If you want go to ancestory.com and look under
Benjamin Ellars you will see Crayton's siblings. I think he is the youngest. In any event if this is the same Crayton drop me a line as we are planning an event for Ben ellars descendants this summer in Bourbon, Illinois

I've talked to her this morning and she really wants to speak with you.
It seems maybe that your Great grandfather might have been my grandfathers uncle.
My grandfather was Benjamin Franklin Ellars, born 11-22-1894 in Madison County ,Ohio. He was also referred as "Pete" all his life. My fathers name is Donald Kermit Ellars and he was called "Pete" all his life. My name is actually Donald Keith but guess what??? I have 1 son,he is 22,nobody yet calls him Pete. He has a 2 year old daughter, maybe we could call her Petey.

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. My grandfather's name was Roscoe Conklin Ellars he was married to Bessie Francis Leach. When I was born my grandfather was already deceased (1945). My grandmother lived around Xenia, Ohio
My Uncle Floyd was a bachelor who lived with her. My mother does not know very much about them, the only thing she knew was that Grandfather had some brothers the only names that came to mind were Jack John and Joe ?She also said that Aunt Eleanor Taylor was a half-sister to Roscoe. Any Help?
