Emma F Ellenwood photo found, 1890s

I found a photo in Maryland of a Emma Florence Ellenwood. It is from Reading, Mass and probably from the early 1890s. it has written on the back 'to Margaretta Weston'. I believe that Emma also wrote on the back of a few other photos as Margaretta Weston is written in the same hand on 6-7 other photos of the Green, Parker and Weston families. If this Emma is a relative please contact me so I can get the photo back to you.

Hello - your John was John Warren Ellenwood of Reading, MA. Father John Smith Ellenwood of Yarmouth, NS and Reading, mother Almira/Elmira W. Pemberton. The Ellenwoods then go back to Samuel and Hannah (Saunders) of Yarmouth, Giles and Jemima (Sullivan) of Yarmouth, Samuel and Sarah (Giles) of Beverly, MA and Yarmouth, Robert and Abigail (Ober) of Beverly, Benjamin and Mary (from whom I'm descended) and finally Ralph and Eleanor Lynn. I had the Yarmouth Ellenwoods in my database but didn't have information on the line that went back to MA, so looked at the MA State Health Dept. birth, marr and death registrations just now (at the New England Historic Genealogical Society website) to flesh out the John Smith Ellenwood line, and I can pass that on to you if you'd like.

Doug Sinclair
archmail@dougsinclairsarchives.com

Hello, are you still looking for info on John Ellenwood? My great grandfather was a John Ellenwood from MA. We are from the California side of family. All I know is that a John Ellenwood married Elizabeth Reed and they had a son (my granddad)Forest Pemberton Ellenwood in 1901. He was born in Stoneham MA. I don't know when they divorced but my grandfather was young, he was later adopted by Elizabeth second husband Carl Cook. They lived in Santa Cruz CA for most of his life. John Ellenwood moved back to Massachusetts and married Ida (don't remember her maiden name). I'm still looking for info to, if you have any more please contact me thru ancestry.com or my email-gigi2354@yahoo.com

Thomas Ellenwood md Lucy Smith of Brimfield, MA: Nov 16, 1750

Being an obsessive, I am bogged down. I can't get this darn Smith
business clarified, I'm, stuck on this stage.

If you have access to ancestry.com or some other pay service, for which
I am unable to belong to, I am looking for a Lucy Smith [wd] of
Brimfield, MA. Now this is not as easy as it seems.

1. Lucy [bc May 27, 1741] is really Lucy Lynde, d/o Samuel Lynde and
Lucy Lamb of Leicester, MA [md. Oct 09, 1740]

2. she marries Nathaniel Smith of Leicester, MA...[bc Sep 16, 1738; md
Aug 14, 1762]

3. they had five children, somewhere!!!!

4. one of which is "my" Polly Smith, the other four are unfound as of yet

5. she married Solomon Thompson in Brimfield, MA [bc Nov 23, 1760; md
Jul 13, 1786]

6. BUT!... Nathaniel and Lucy disappear from Leicester, MA, and turn up
in the 1771/2 Census for Guilford, VT/NY

7. this is a tumultuous time when VT, MA, NH and NY are fighting over
who is going to get that part of the wilderness as part of their
state...so we have a conflict between two groups, the Yorkers and the
Sufferers

8. the Smiths are in the middle of it

9. each side trying to outdo the other in records destruction...for
eight years!!!

10. Polly was born c 1764, so she would have been about seven-eight
years old at the time of the census

11. Polly marries Solomon back in Brimfield, in July 13, 1786, 14 years
after the census and at the ae 22 years

12. where were Polly and her family during those "lost years"

13. now, how is it that Polly is back in Brimfield...what has happened
in the space of those 12 years???

14. we also find a Lucy Smith, [wd] marrying a Thomas Ellinwood, back in
Brimfield, Jun 03, 1784...just two years before her daughter...SAME
TOWN, SAME CHURCH...

15. I can find nothing to identify this Lucy Smith [wd] as the original
Lucy Lynde that md Nathaniel Smith, so I must assume until then, that
she is the one I am looking for

16. Lucy Smith [ae 43] md Thomas Ellinwood [bc Aug 01, 1728/mdc Jun 03,
1784; ae 56], and is his third wife

17. guess who his second wife was...and who just so happens to have
connections back to the Thompsons, MARY THOMPSON, Solomon's aunt!!!
[sounds like the Ozarks]

18. so Lucy is now, Solomon's aunt and his wife's mother! ...if my
assumptions have merit... one big happy family

19. but what happened to Nathaniel, Polly's father, and Lucy's husband?
...his death cannot be found anywhere...

20. and since Polly and her mother are living in or near Brimfield, the
other children must have been there as well...some probably already
married, more than likely they are all married, but to whom?

21. assuming the children were ...using the LDS figures...

.born........ 1762/3, 1764/5 [Polly], 1766/7, 1768/9, 1770/1

females md....1782/3, 1784/5>1786], 1786/7, 1788/9, 1790/1

males md......1786/7, 1788/9......., 1790/1, 1792/3, 1794/5

22. are there children? fitting this year sequence? md, whose parents
are Nathaniel Smith and Lucy {Lynde} Smith?

Bottom line, I'd like to find the children, etc..

Forgot to mention that Horatio was one of nine childre, and I have his ancestry, mostly in Athol and northern Worcester Co., Mass. His siblings were: Eliza Crombie, Daniel, Edwin Otis, Elvira, Cynthia, Euceva, Tilden Bradley and Lucy Ann, all born 1807-1825.

Daniel Ellenwood (Athol, MA 1751)

So glad to have a reply! Daniel was Horatio's grandfather, making him my great-gr-gr-gr-great gandfather. He was born in Brimfield and married Lucy Sherman. He was a doctor and dies young, in 1794. Was buried in the cemetery off Pleasant St. in Athol and Lucy was buried beside him in 1838 - she never remarried. Daniel had studied medicine under Dr. Israel Trask of Brimfield and bought land in Athol from him and moved there to practice. Lots of Ellenwoods there then and since. Daniel and Lucy had seven children: Daniel, Seneca, James, Justus/Justin, Rebecca, Lucy and Abigail. Dr. Daniel died in 1794. I have photos of his and Lucy's gravestones. His parents were Thomas Ellinwood and Abigail (King). Which of the sons is your ancestor? I've wondered if the Columbus Ellenwood mentioned in other messages on this board could have been related - they went in for "historical" names, with Horatio, Seneca, etc. Hope I don't have as many typos in this reply as I saw after submitting the original message! Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Pat - got sidetracked for a year or so with other matters. Daniel Ellenwood and his wife and several other family members are buried in the old cemetery in the center of Athol. I was there last year and got poor photos as the cemetery is completely grown up with pines although clear at ground level. It is in the center of a block and accessed through a private driveway. Can give you particulars if you're headed in that direction again.

Hi Barbara,
I'm not sure if we have ever corresponded before or not? But I ran across your query of Sep. 3rd Ancestry.com about Daniel Ellenwood. I don't have any of my material handy, but I think he is related to my g.g.grandmother Lucinda Ellenwood who married David Smith Jr. in Jefferson Co. NY. I think I have letters from my great Aunt referring to that family..Lucinda was born in 1790 if my memory is correct, dau. of I believe Jacob and...Ellenwood born in New Hampshire and a descendant of Ralph Ellenwood of Beverly Mass. At any rate I have heard mention of a Daniel, and Hiram Co. Ohio. Lucinda's son Harlow b.1825 is my g. grandfather. He came to the Akron Ohio area from Sacketts Harbor Jefferson Co NYabt 1850. Married a Mary McArthur and settled there.
After the holidays perhaps we could exchange information.
Laurel
