Obituary of Martha Jane Parker Elliott 1856-1914, Collins Gazzette April 30, 1914 , Martha Jane Parker, daughter of William and Nancy Parker, was born near Collins, Iowa, March 13, 1856, and died at her home in Independence, Kansas, April 23, 1914, having lived to bless the earth 58 years, 1 month and 10 days.

Miss Parker was united in marriage to Mr. J. W. Elliott October 18, 1874. To them were born 9 children, two children died in infancy. Three boys and four girls live to mourn the loss of a devoted and loving mother. Mrs. Elliott was converted and joined the M. E. Church at the old Union School house when she was married, she and Mr. Elliott united with the United Brethren at old West Point. After moving to Kansas they placed their membership in the Christian Church, where it remains. She was ever a devoted christian woman, having been used of the Lord not only to help win all her own children to Christ, but many boys and girls and friends also. Hers was a sunny, hopeful, cheerful life. While she was a sufferer for years, yet she bore all afflictions with christian faith and patience. Her last words were in prayer and her just book message was the word of God.

Mrs. Elliott leaves of her family one brother, David Parker of Cody, Wyoming, and one sister, Mrs. David Denniston of Collins, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott lived together nearly 40 years, not only as husband and wife but as Christian workers, and while the heartache will be hard to bear he has the earnest of the hope to be united forever is the Heavenly world with his loved and cherished wife. Mrs. Elliott's going to be with the Lord, leaves on earth to mourn their loss, her husband, seven children, ten grandchildren, with many relatives and friends. God's holy Word says, "Blessed in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." The death of this our departed sister, is but the opening of the doors of eternal life. "He that hath Christ hath eternal life." Mrs. Elliott confessed Christ and he has no doubt confessed her around the Throne of God.

The above obituary was read by the officiating minister, Rev. C. S. Hanson at the funeral Sunday afternoon in the M. P. Church, which was crowded with a sympathetic congregation of old friends and former neighbors as well as relatives of the deceased "Mother in Israel." Rev. Hanson's sermon was filled with comfort to the bereaved and wise counsel to all. He paid a fitting tribute to the christian influence of Mrs. Elliott and its spiritual radiance throughtout her whole life, leaving to her family and friends a blessed memory. The floral tributes were very beautiful, the choir rendered appropriate selections, some of the music being new and sung with feeling. The interment was at Evergreen Cemetery, the pall bearers being Curt Campbell, Frank Campbell, G. W. Kirk, A. S. McCord, L. D. Shearer and Jno. Signs.

NOTES -- Mrs. Elliott had been in pour health for six years, but her fatal illness dated from a year ago last February.

The body arrived in Collins Saturday, being shipped from Independence, Kans. Accompanying the casket were Mr. Elliott, son Jesse and daughters Pearl and Georgie. Besides these there survives Harley Elliott of Cambridge and Mrs. Grace Hoffmann of Elwell. Daniel and Iva had to stay at home in Kansas and were not at the funeral. Two children are dead, Nellie at 6 months old, and Ira at 13 years.

Among those from distance at the funeral were Butler Warner of Des Moines, Elmer Fisher of Valley Junction and his mother, Mrs. Fisher; and Chas. Parker of Burt, Iowa.

page 1, col. 2, Last rites were held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada, for Harley Z. Elliott, 83, a former Cambridge resident who died March 28 at Westview Nursing Home in Des Moines. Rev. James Denler officiated and burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Collins.

Elliott was born Nov. 6, 1878 in Missouri, the son of William and Martha Elliott. A retired farmer, he had worked and lived in Story county 75 years.
He was married to Miss Addie Kirk February 22, 1905 in Story County. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Talley of Independence, Kansas, Mrs. Georgia Gilbert of Springfield, Mo. and Mrs. Iva Harrah of Sonoma, Cal., also several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and his wife, Addie who died in 1954.

P.S. His mother's maiden name was Parker. His brother's who preceded him in death: Ira R., Jesse Warren, and Daniel W. Elliott. His sisters who preceded him in death were Mrs. Sarah Hoffman and Nellie Elliott

Longnecker, Newton, Dies as Building is Razed, Newton, David Longnecker, 22, died in a fire which destroyed a frame building at the Advertising Novelty company's plant here last Wednesday.

The fire originated in the drying oven in the plant and metal department and was reported to have been proceded by an explosion.

Longneckers body was not recovered until several hours after the fire, when the ruins had cooled.

The victim was employed as the plant foreman. He had been married only a few months. Survivors include his widow, his parents Mr and Mrs Hugh J Longnecker, 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Jasper County coroner Ralph Toland scheduled an inquest for Thursday. Damage to the property of the Advertising Company next door and to the coal company next door was estimated to be $50,000.

He was born Dec. 28, 1922, in Coldwater, Kan., and moved to Rainier in 1939. Mr. Elliott served as a nurse during World War II and worked in the shipping department of Longview Fibre Co. for 39 years. He retired in 1978.

He married Lula Dahl on Feb. 3, 1951, in Kelso. She preceded him in death July 21, 2000, exactly four years before his death.

Survivors include a son, Roger Elliott; a daughter, Shirley Williams; a nephew, Donald Stevenson; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Leota Fern (Harrah) Imlay was born on May 11, 1920 to Albert C. and Iva E. (Elliott) Harrah at Williams, Iowa. She lived in Williams and Iowa Falls and completed her schooling - as she finished the 10th grade and later in Jewell she obtained her G.E.D.

On July 25, 1936 Leota married Harry P. Imlay in Webster City. they then moved to Jewell. She was a member of Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell where she was involved in teaching Sunday School and the women's group. Later she joined Salem United Methodist Church in Hubbard and was a member of the quilting group there.

Ill health forced her to move to the Hubbard Care Center in December, 2000.
Leota is survived by her son Harry and his wife, Lois, of Eagle Grove; two daughters, Harriett and her husband, Frank Howard, of Portland, Oregon and Joyce and her husband, Luke Frazier, of Sopchoppy, Florida; eleven grandchildren; a brother Richard and his wife, Velma Harrah, of Houston, Missouri; a sister Juanita of Sonoma, California; a sister-in-law, Byrdie Imlay of Jewell. Leota was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, her parents and ten brothers and sisters.

Stars and Stripes, 21 Jan 1952, Bomber Explodes At California Base, Sacremento, Jan 20, A diabled airforce bomber crashed on top of a crowded military guard house at Mather Air Force Base yesterday an exploded, burning to death 7 men and injuring 61.

A 10 minute interval between the crash landing and the explosion enabled the 3 injured B 52 crew members to get out.
Then a blast of gasoline turned the 1 story guard house into a "flaming matchbox." The delayed explosion came while rescuers were going after guardhouse inmates under heavy beam as a result of the bomber's impact.

Engine Failed, Base officials believed the 7 killed and most of the injued were guardhouse
occupants.
But the delayed explosion may have trapped some of the rescuers.
The B 52 was forced to land when 1 of its 2 engines failed. Its 3 crewmen were among the injured. "I was coming in for a landing when 1 of my motors went out and we pancaked on top of the building." gasped the pilot, 2nd Lt. Peter A Keck, who suffered from shock, cuts and burns.

His injured crew members were, Lt Robert C Grout and T Sgt. Robert Harrah.

He was born September 18, 1915 in Independence Kansas to Luther and Georgia Gilbert. He attended Springfield Senior High school and business college. Ralph was a member of Christ Episcopal Church serving as a past vestry member and chalice bearer. Serving Meals on Wheels for eight years was, for him, a great joy and privilege.

Ralph was a member of several service clubs including Rotary International over the years. Together with his parents he owned and operated Gilbert Furniture and Carpet Co. in Springfield for 39 years.

He was a golfer and charter member of Twin Oaks Country Club. He was also a passionate trout fisherman at Lake Taneycomo, where he kept a boat for 19 years at Main Street Boat Dock in Branson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Lee, and Mildred, his beloved wife of 68 years. He is survived by his daughter Susan Carrell and husband Winston Davis of Allenspark, CO., his daughter Kristen, of Springfield, and his daughter Mary Ann and husband Bruce Barton, of Springfield. Grandchildren are: Hayley Hicks of Fairfax, VA, Matthew Carrell of Huston, TX, Emily Pickett of Castle Rock, CO, and Kelsey Barton of Springfield. Great Grandchild is Ella Pickett of Castle Rock, CO.

Ralph and family would like to thank special friend and caregiver, Gina Williams. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice Compassus, 1465 E. Primrose.

A celebration of his life will be at Christ Episcopal Church on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 10:30 AM under the care of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home.

They owned and operated a dairy farm near McClusky, N.D. She died in 1976. On Oct. 27, 1980, he married Joyce Ulrich in McClusky. In 1982 they opened J & W Upholstery in Martin.
