Re: Is Elliott English or Scottish?

Hi, you may have resolved your question by now, but this may add to your knowledge. The Elliotts were among the original clans of Scotland. They were commissioned by Robert the Bruce to station themselves on the border between Scotland and England to preserve independence for Scotland. When James of England reunited the kingdom, the Elliott Clan had to move (for their political health) and they migrated to northern Ireland. It has been stated by scots that of all the spellings of the family name, ELLIOTT is peculiar to those who went to Ireland. I notice that now, there are Elliotts back in England and Scotland so some must have returned at a time later than their exodus to Ireland. I hope this helps...............Will

Karol,
Thank you for the info. I find the Ebenezer Elliott book is out of print, so would appreciate your help in locating Arthur's parents. He named one of his sons, LeRoy (perhaps after his nephew?) I believe my great grandmother, Mary ELLIOTT PHILLIPS, was the only one to survive with children. Can find no record of son John, who may have died in the War. Have info on this family that I can share.
Linda

Are you looking for Arthur's parentage? He's in the Daniel Elliott genealogy out of South Carolina. The genealogy doesn't have much on him because he "disappeared" into Alabama and/or Arkansas and the compiler of the family history (Edwin Ebezener Elliott, published 1930) could find no trace of his family. A nephew, Leroy Gibson, supposedly went to Arkansas with Arthur. After the Civil War, other members of the family (surnames Robinson, Martin) went to Arkansas as well. I don't know if there was contact between the families there or if the post-war family migration was simply part of the general move to the west of that time.

If you want information from the Elliott genealogy, let me know. I would be glad to share.

Karol

This postiung had several of my relatives in listed, including my g.g.grandmother Caroline Virginia Pavy (Note 2). I have her as married to David C. Elliott 12/15/1853 in Caroline County, VA. I have 9 children's names for them and an additional son named D.C. Elliott by another mother named Susan F. Elliott, born 7/10/1870. (I only saw a birth record for that).

I have a conflicting birth year for David C., one source says 1830, and a record from Essex Co. had a David born in 1827. Your information posted suggests that the Elliott family came from Essex Co. prior to Caroline Co.

Regardless, it sounds as thouth we are linked by this family group.
We are both confused. Here is my family tree.

Jeanne Elliott Perkins (me)
father William S. Elliott mother Helen Bickford
grandfather Henry S. Eliott grandmother Bessie Marshall
gr grand William S Elliott gr grand Annie Bassett
gr gr John Elliott gr gr Mary Cole (this is who I am trying to find)
gr gr gr Samuel Elliott grgrgr Achsah Austin
12 or 13 children one of which is the John I am lookinfg for
4 gr John wife unknown

I am not aware of the Mary you said was your great grandmother. Is your ancestor a child of
samuel and Achsah?

I think that the questionable child was really a child that Hannah had out or wedlock and that samuel and Achsah brought up because said child was born well after child bearing age for Achsah. Hannah was also married twice according to my records. I could be way off base but the dates I have don't make sense otherwise.

Any info you have would be welcome.

Jeanne Perkins

Lorraine,
Have you found the William Elliot living in Lynchburg, Campbell Co, VA in 1810? There was another William Elliot Living in Campbell Co in 1810 plus several Elliotts living there also in 1810 some with family members not born in the U.S.A. Don't know what good it will do us but, at least, it confirms that other Elliott lived there.

I just can't believe we can't find more info on William Joseph.

Did I tell you I have a copy of his Civil War papers? You probably already have a copy but if not, I will send one to you.

Thanks for the info on MaryAnn and James Woodall.

Take care my Austrialian cousin,
Patsy

David, thanks so much for your reply. I was guessing the date of David's birth. I only had one child for them & that was John L. b abt 1870. Would like to know who their other children were. Maybe John L. is his on by the Susan F. you mentioned. Who was Susan before she marr David? I'm not sure where they wer first since I have a Margaret Elliott b abt 1730 in Caroline who marr Samuel Worthan Sr. who was b in Middlesex. She is the earliest Elliott that I have. Any info on David & his childen will be appreciated.
Ollie

Debbie, James (Jan. 14,1902 - 1944) was my dad's brother & lived w/us for a while in Savannah. He worked on ships (in Sav'h)as a steamfitter/pipefitter. He died at age 42 from bad teeth going septic. James' 1st wife, May (Mae?) died from a cancerous mole on her back. His 2nd wife was named Esten. James & May had 4 children, Celoystene, Norma Grace, Carl & Robert (Bobby). Carl, who had black hair, & Bobby, who had light sandy hair, lived w/us for several years when I was young. They loved to play the guitar & would both play the same guitar at the same time. Sounds silly but one would sit & the other stand behind him and they would really get with it. Carl later played w/ Carl Perkins(of Blue Suede Shoes fame). They bought me a bicycle for my 8th B'day while living w/us. When grown, Bobby would call me periodically before family reunions. He came to at least one & I have a photo of him & my dad together. Bobby lived in the Orlando, Fl. area & worked at Cape Canaveral. I think the sisters live in Chilton, AL but I heard that Carl had died. Most of this info came from my mom shortly after you phoned me. I compiled info but lost your number. Glad I got the info when I did, as Mom is now in a nursing home. Hope this helps.

I've only done research on Whitemans who lived in Philadelphia, PA, and New Jersey during the 1800s. Wendell Whiteman is the one who married into my family. His father was Peter, his mother's maiden name was MATLACK, and his had a brother named Jacob. Wendell married Lydia L. HORTON, b. Rhode Island, but they were married in Philadelphia where her family was living. They had two children, a son who died young, and a daughter, Laura, who married Edwin H. COATES. They had a son and grandson named Wendell Whiteman COATES.

I am a little confused. Do you mean Samuel Elliot who was born in 1762 in Pelham, Ma/NH? His father's name was William. Samuel did have a son named John. I will look in my files to see if I have anything on him. I doubt it.

My husband's great grandmother was Mary Perkins Burroughs from Morgan, Vt. Any connection?

Wow!! That is so exciting to learn more about James Howard Elliott. I always wondered where my dad got his musical ability. He could sit down to a piano without lessons and play a beautiful tune. One of my favorites was Autumn Leaves and he never missed a note! He also loved playing the harmonica. He loved to fish, hunt and could water ski like no one else. He had an extra ordinary ability to draw and paint. He could take someones picture and the reproduction looked nearly perfect. His biological mother's name was Mae Broxton, who gave birth to a daughter, Helen Elliott in 1924, two years before Dad. She gave dad the name of Gordon Ross Elliott, but gave him to her older brother, Matthew Broxton, who raised him as Gordon Ross Broxton in Auborndale, Fla. But, on the 1930 census, dad was listed as Gordon Ross Elliott. You mentioned having a picture of James with your father. Is there a chance you might send it to me in an email? I would love to add it to my tree. I lost Dad to pneumonia last year and I get a lot of comfort from information of his ancestors. Pictures are treasures. I only which I could have met my grandfather and his family. They seem to be such good people. I am a little confused by the information about Mae, James's first wife, because dad's mother Mae died in about 1969 from a stroke. According to her daughter-in-law she remarried a man named Curtis Black and they had a son Jimmy Curtis Black who was a police officer in Auborndale, Fla. Maybe he never actually married our Mae and his first wife was a different Mae. I would value anything you can tell me about James; what other hobbies did he enjoy, what was his personalty, was he especially talented at something, did he do well in school, was he funny or serious. I'm sure as a teenager,he must have been devistated by his mothers death. Do you know what happened to his wife after he died? I can send you an invitation to my tree if you would like. My email is debbierinehart93@yahoo.com THANKS!! Debbie Broxton Rinehart

I just saw your post about pictures of Hattie Elliott's grave stone. I don't know how I missed it when I was there last May! I would love to have that picture for my collection! You can send it and any further correspondence to debbierinehart93@yahoo.com. Any info would be appreciated. I know she was killed when struck by lightening in (I believe) 1919. It's the stories that were passed down from generation-to-generation that are so special! THANKS Debbie Rinehart

I don't think I've read your post before and would still love any info on James Howard Elliott you may have. I went to Burke County this past spring and found out that he died at the early age of 43 from pnumonia in Savannah. I have a picture of his gravestone which is next to his father's, William Gibson Elliott at the Sardis City Cemetery. Any info you have on the brothers would be welcome as well. THANKS Debbie Rinehart
