I'm trying to sort out the parentage of Shadrach Ellis Jr. who is first found in Putnam, Georgia in the 1820 Census. The DAR does not recognize Jr. as the son of Sr. They say he may be a nephew or other relative as the suffix Jr. did not always pertain to the "son of". I am looking at the siblings of Shadrach Ellis Sr. son of Captain Henry Ellis. I've searched Etheldred Ellis and here is what I've found. There are two listing the approximate birth year as 1770.
Etheldred (son of Henry) - b. about 1770 North Carolina married Sarah Bryant (according to Dixie McCrary)
1800 Census - Greenville, Pitt County, North Carolina
Males under 10: 2
Males 26-44: 1
Females 16-25: 1
Slaves: 5
1810 Census - Pitt County, North Carolina
Males 10-15: 2
Males 26-44: 1
Females under 10: 3
Females 26-44: 1
Slaves: 1
Ethedred (son of Stephen Ellis & Mary Brunswick) b. about 1770 Brunswick, Virginia married Elizabeth McKnight July 14, 1795 Rowan, North Carolina (Bond: Stephen Ellis Wit: John Eccles, Esq.)
1800 - Salisbury, Surry, North Carolina (under Etheldron)
Males under 10: 1
Males 26-44: 1
Females under 10: 2
Females 16-25: 1
Females over 45: 1
Slaves: 1
1810 Census - Surry County, North Carolina
Males under 10: 5
Males 16-25: 1
Males 26-44: 1
Females 10-15: 2
Females 26-44: 1
Slaves: 1
1812 - Tax List Surry County, North Carolina (300 acres)
Now...This is where I'm getting confused.
Only one Etheldred Ellis is found:
Surry County & Rowan County are neighboring counties.
1820 - Iredell, North Carolina (formed from Rowan County)
1830 - Iredell, North Carolina
1840 - Iredell, North Carolina
1850 - Alexander, North Carolina lists Etheldred Ellis born about 1770 in Virginia with wife Elizabeth
1853 - Will for Etheldred Ellis Alexander County - Probate Records 1869, 1874, & 1880
1860 Census lists wife Elizabeth (E. Ellis) born about 1773 living in Alexander County, North Carolina
My conclusion would be that the Etheldred Ellis who migrated to Iredell, North Carolina and died in Alexander County, North Carolina was the son of Stephen Ellis & Mary Brunswick. That family line would be as follows:
Etheldred son of
Stephen son of
Caleb son of
Jeremiah Jr. son of
Jeremiah Sr. son of
Edward
This line ends up the same place as the line of Captain Henry Ellis.
Then I found records from the War of 1812. I'm not sure where these fit in:
Col. Adam McWillie's 2nd Reg. Militia - Activated October 6, 1814 in Lancaster, South Carolina
Shadrach Ellis - private
John Ellis - private
Etheldred Ellis - private
Does anyone know what happened to Etheldred Ellis son of Captain Henry Ellis after the 1810 Pitt County, NC Census?
Anyone with any information showing Shadrach Jr.'s parentage would be appreciated.
