My paternal GGF Alfred John Ellis married Mary Ann BLOMFIELD in Norwich on 25.12.1876. The only info on him is from the marriage cert, and 1881 Census, when they were in Leicester - he was 28 when married, so born around 1848, apparently in 'London, Middlesex' and his father was Richard ELLIS, who had died before the marriage.
I can find only one birth record for an Alfred (John) Ellis, with a Richard as his father, and this family lived in Hanley, Staffs, so don't think it's right.
