Hi D Cullen,
Thanks for the swift responce. You are correct on all counts! Eliza Jane Elmes and John Ould were my Grandmother's parents. She was Emma Ould born 24-8-1870, 12 Rolls Rd Bermondsey. She married Alfred Jones on 17-4-1892 at St Mary Magdalene Southwark. One of the witness was her sister Mary Jane Ould. They had ten children survive to adulthood, one of whom was my Mum Mary Jane Jones. She and Dad,AlbertTate, married 15-11-1924 St Olaves Southwark. Mum died aged 97 in Christchurch is buried in the family plot at Glentunnel Canterbury.Mum's oldest sister my Aunt May also died in Christchurch , her son Clem aged 90 lives in Golden Bay Nelson. It is amazing that so many of us (Many hundreds!) are direct descendants of Benjamin Elmes. I alone have 26 counting Gt Grandchildren! Where can I find the Trees or profiles of Benjamin Elmes, John Ould etc.? Thanks again. BT.

The witnesses to Eliza Jane marrying John Ould is her sister Mary Ann and her husband James Braithwaite which is correct -they were both daughters of George Bemjamin and Mary Evans. I have found the Ould family tree on line but it gets confusing - it would seem that there were two Eliza Jane Elmes. One born 1843 as you have, and Eliza Jane above born 1847 in Lambeth. So, if Ould is your line we definitely have a match and the online Ould family tree has the wrong Eliza Jane attached to it.

Many thanks for your message - I'm sure we have a match! I have slightly different details - George Benjamin Elmes married Mary Evans 26 Feb 1837 so different spouse name. Their daughter Eliza Jane married John Ould in 1862. Does that name sound familiar? George Benjamin died in 1844 age 32 so that fits in with her father dying when she was a child. I have found his wife Mary and daughter Jane on the 1861 census both working as servants. Look forward to hearing from you again!

Have just found your post re: Benjamin Elmes and Mary Green family! Their fourth child George Benjamin born 6-6-1813 could be my Gt.Gt. Grandfather (I am 87yrs. old). The only facts I have is that George Benjamin Elmes and wife Jane had a daughter Eliza(beth) Jane Elmes baptised 9-4-43 at Whitechapel St Mary Tower Hamlets, was my Gr Grandmother. Her Dad died while she was a child, she and her Mum spent the rest of their lives in Southwark London. She had ten children all born at Rolls Rd Southwark. We may be related? Our family came to NZ. over fifty years ago (Christchurch)

It has been some time since I have been able to look further into my Elmes line, what with x 2 busy Children to entertain :-) Anyhow I have managed to make a bit of a breakthrough and it turns out that my Elmes line comes from Tintern, Curraghmore, Wexford...My GG Grandmother was Catherine Jane Elmes, Her father and mother were Edward Elmes and Catherine Elmes...Edwards father was a Samuel Elmes...Has anyone come across a link to the Elmes family in this part of Wexford...I discovered recently a batch of letters referred to as the Elmes letters which are arcived in the National archives dublin, they were written between a Samuel Elmes and Robert Morris around the end of the 1700,s in it they refer to Samuels sons, Thomas, Samuel (jnr), and King Elmes. In the letter they make reference to Samuel (Jnr) buying a farm in the late 1700,s at Curraghmore...Thomas was involved in the 1798 rebellion and served in the Milita...King was involved in the Royal Navy...do any of these names ring a bell and can anyone shed any further light on the family in Wexford?

HiJean,
Have you been able to make inroads on the Lacock Elms. Like you, I feel sure they were closely related, albeit at cousins in the 1700-1800.

I joined the Wiltshire Family History Society and some other people looking for the Ancestor, James Elmes B1776--the thatcher who lived at Notton, closeby to Lacock.

There are so many Robert,George,Williams, but few James and Charles.

I have tried to find out why there are no baptism records. But other than maybe they were no baptised ,I'm at a Loss.

Hope you are keeping well.

Regards, Ken Elms

Katherine was the daughter of Rudolphus Elmes and Bethia Dodson, his father was also Rudolphus who married Catherine Whitcomb he had arrived in Scituate Mass from England in about 1635 as a settler from Southwark, Surrey. His father was also Rudolphus who is descended from a long line of Elmes in England going back to the 15th century. The name is spelt several differnt ways, Rho, Ru, Ra and the second E in Elmes is sometimes dropped.

Radolphus or Rodolphus# 1 married Sarah and they had Anthony, Radolphus #2, 1620-1709 (who married Catherine Whitcomb 1624-1668 in Scituate), Jonathan, Henry, Margaret who I believe didn't leave England.
Rhodolphus #3 1668-1749 who married Bethia Dodson was the third of the name and I have him down as dying in Middlesborough Mass and I presume he was R#2's son whose father built him a house in Scituate that is still there (I have seen and photographed it).
The spelling of the name is very inconsistent.
I have R#1's lineage back to the 15th century in England.
We may not be descended from Rudolphus as our line comes from either an Elms who went to Bandon Co Cork in 1588 or one of Cromwell's army who had a grant of land in Ireland in the 1640s but who stayed in Ireland until the 20th century

Hi. I am decended from Rudolphus who came to the English colonies in 1635. I would be very interested in any information about his family that you are willing to share. I have that he was the son of Mr. Elmes and his wife Sarah. His mother died in 1654 and he returned to England in 1656 to help settle the estate. I descend through his granddaughter Katherine who married Eleazer Carver in 1719. Katherine was the daughter of Rudolphus Elmes and Bethia Dodson.

Sylvia

Hi Sally,

Like you, I strongly believe based on our known sources of information, that James Elmes[Elms] b1776 is indeed a common link. He was a thatcher. His son Robert B 1805 links to being George Elmes [b 1845] as my grt grd fthr.

My Robert first married Esther Jenkins. There were some children. Esther died. In 1844,Robert[widower] married Sarah Sadd [spinster]. Robert's marriage certificate shows father James. It does link together.

The family names reappear, James,Robert,George,William,Job,Reuben etc

But I cannot find a record of baptism for James. I have found his parish record of marriage to Betty Emmett.

Keep in touch.

Regards, Ken

Hi Jean,

We have contacted each other previously on our Elms/Elmes searches. But the puzzle for each of us,is how did they link. In my case I have reached a brick wall for James Elmes b1776/77.

But there are no Charles or Richard in his children's names. But Robert,George,Job do appear.I have tried everything I know to find James's baptism record in the North Wiltshire area[Lacock where he is shown born on census.

I have found a marriage parish record at Chippenham for James and Betty Emmett. The comforting think for us is the family name goes back to the 1500's in the area. Include all the history -Civil war etc and the areas were relatively quiet countryside villages -sheep,agricultue --no lords of the manor, royal appointees.

So, We'll best hope something turns up at best.

Regards, Ken

Cecil Frederick Elmes was my grandfather, Fottie. He did indeed marry Margaret Flood, Niggie. As Margaret has told you (Hello again Margaret) they had a child, Cecily. Cecily was my mother. Her career as a pilot for the US during WWII, although short lived, was an additional testimony to her father's forward thinking. He encouraged and paid for the pilot training she received at the age of 17. You may be interested to know that Fottie was also a published story teller - nom-de-plume 'Hallbowlin Elmes'. Hallbowlin (sp?) being his place of birth.

I have the Elmes family of Southwark but only up to 1654 when Sara Elmes died. She had 7 children including Rudolphus who emigrated to New England and started a long line of Elmes there. Her other sons were Anthony, Jonathan, Henry and John Elmes the second who died about 1651. If you could find the connection I have a lot of data going back to the 15th century

Hi sally,
Thank you for your email and noting your ggg grd parents as your interest--Charles Elms[Elmes] and Susannah Button. My interest has concentrated from James Elmes b1776 [I believe Lacock, but hithertoo, I and others cannot find a Parish Record for that baptism. I have tried everything I can,but seemingly to no avail. I have a NIMROD list of marriages for Elms[Elmes] from 1560 or there abouts. But I cannot find Charles ans Susanah. But I think the Wiltshire website of BMD shows a marriage for 1844. Susannah Button. The same year as my Robert Elmes-Sarah Sadd. Also Joseph Elmes and Charlotte Robbins.

There is info at the LDS site [Latterr Day Saints]. There is also a pilot website run by them on Vital records [2nd edition].

I used to belong fully to Ancestry, but could make no progress. I also belong to the Wiltshire Family Society-but there too, Lacock is not transcribed.

I have contacted Doris Roddham [Chippenham] and she traces to my James Elmes. Also a Paul Welch[Calne] who found a copy of James Elmes and Betty Emmett[m 1799] at St Andrews, Chippenham.

I know there were more Elms at Lacock and nearby Kington St Michael. But I cannot find connecting links. But its worth keeping in contact as our traces lead to Lacock. The 1841 census there shows the families. I think Charles lived on the High St. I am sure the Elms[Elmes] were closely related. They all appear to come from North Wiltshire and surrounding areas.

I know James Elmes is shown as a Thatcher and lived Notton [very close to Lacock].

I know in my line that there are no Charles' as christian names. But Robert, George, William and Joseph crop up a lot. A Reuben too.

Hopefully, you can view my family tree on this Ancestry site.I also have a pedigree tree on LDS who have made it into a cd disk.

Ken

My late mum Patricia Lucy,(she passed away two weeks ago at the age of 53);has a sister , Cecelia Elmes. She is a matron at RK. Khans Hospital in Durban. She has a sister, Priscilla. She lives in Newlands East of Durban. I have two brothers, Darel 17 years, and Craig, 14 years, and a 30 year old sister Elizabeth. We took the surname Wardle, which is my late dads Surname. We also have Family in Nongoma, Eshowe, Cape Town, Johannesburg. ect. These are all decendants of the Dunns and Elmes family. John Dunn was a settler who was given a piece of land in Mangete,Kwazulu natal, together with 10 Zulu wives. This was in the late 1800's. He befreinded the Chief who was a Zulu, and this is how he received a thousand hectares of land. this land was split up between 10 wives and this is where I grew up. We lived on a farm which was 100 hectares of land. My gran (mums mum, was not known by me, as sh died young, together with her husband. Thsi was separate incidents. It was said that they were formally from Durban, and had homes there, which were eventually sold. This was probably how they ended up on the farm. It comes to mind that the Surname Elmes was from my mums dad, Mr. Elmes. He married a Dunn, from Mangete.

If any more informationis needed, please call me on my celphone: +27 733195505.(0733195505). I recall being at Helen's funeral when Uncle Jim passed away from the stress of it (in 1967). I also recall being at Honey Lou's funeral in Allison Park near Pittsburgh. I recall it was very hard on Chuck (Charles Rhodes). I hope everybody is well. Bill Beaumont 4/9/09.

Harriet Elmes, Cheltenham, 1891 etc

Am tracing the family of Harriet(t) Elmes, a lodging-house keeper at 20 Royal Parade, Cheltenham, per 1891 Census. Her children were Edith, age 8, Emma, age 6, Charles, age 4, and later there was a Gilbert, born 1892. The father does not appear; he may have been a butler in a private home living out.
I can only trace Charles to 1901 when, at 14, he was working as a Clerk for a Pianoforte maker.
In 1901 Emma was a Servant in a home in Cheltenham.
Emma came to the U.S. in 1910 and married.
Are there descendants of Edith, Charles, or Gilbert out there? Is the father's name known?
Emma's descendants in the U.S. are interested to know more. She did not keep in touch with the family after coming here.
Thank you.

Hi Robert,

I am late to this thread and hope that you are still active online.

I have a connection to Benjamin Elms of Maine and who married Hannah Tilden in Canton Mass abt april 1 1800 according to the intentions filed there in the town of Canton, Mass records. I am looking to see if he is related to Rhodolphus Ellmes of Scituate but can not find any connection between the two cities there in Massachusetts. I have been to both Canton and Sciuate and didn't find any family histories to connect them locally.

You mentioned that you had Ellmes back to the 1400s. I wonder if you have my Benjamin who had gone up to Unity /Searsport Maine and had a family up there.

Thank you,
Ward Hobby
