I have been researching the Moon tree for some time. I do believe that William b 1851 was the son of Philip Moon. Philip and Mary Ann Elphick were married in 1852. Maybe they would have been married sooner had Philip Moon not been away at sea so often!? On the 1871 census for New Shoreham, you will find Mary Ann at home with her children and Philip is enumerated as Philip Elphick Moon.

believe that you may mean Mary Ann Thomas.

She born 21 Dec 1836 in East Maitland, and married Stephen Elphick on 15 July 1856 at Brownlow Hill Chapel near Camden NSW. She died in Tumut on 16 Feb 1904.

Stephen was born in 1834 in Lewes, Sussex, England. He died in Tumut on 28 Sep 1909.

I have details of their parents and their children if required. My data has been collated over time as a result of my research into the early Thomas family (my mothers family).

Contact me direct on if you require more:

pbeaver4@bigpond.com

Regards

Her Daughter Mary Jane Stover Morris was my Gr Gr Grandmother. I don't have a lot of information. I do have Mary J Morris' obit. It describes the family's move to California by covered wagon. She was accompanied by her Mother, Step Father (Thomas Elphick)and step brothers.
Annie Defrees born in Indiana married Thomas Elphick

Anne is daughter of William Defrees and Elizabeth McKnight. From the 1800 and 1900 census records, St. Joseph Co IN, she is Anna ELFORD and Anna Elphick. An LDS record, for what it's worth, has Annie Defrees of Indiana and Thomas R Elphick marrying Sep, 27, 1875 in Solano CA. Oddly, her sister Alice also has married an Elphick and has a child Grace. Anyone figure this one out?
Teresa
Indiana

NSW Elphick's and the Thomas family

I have only recently noticed this message hence the delay in time since you origionally posted your message.

I am related to the Thomas side of the family of Mary Ann and Stephen Elphick.
I understand that Stephen was born in Sussex, England and his parents were James Elphick and Elizabeth Casham. He arrived in NSW in 1852 on the ship "William and Mary".
Mary Ann Thomas was born in East Maitland on 21 December 1837.
Her parents were James Thomas and Mary Daley. They had mmarried in Maitland in 1836.
The family later moved from Maitland to Camden and were living at Brownlow Hill, where James Thomas was a tennant farmer clearing and planting on 80 acres, when Stephen Elpick and Mary Ann Thomas married in the Cof E Chapel at Brownlow Hill on 15 July 1856. Mary was the first child of James and Mary who had a number of other children.
Mary Elphick (nee Thomas) died on 16 February 1904 in Tumut.

I would like to know more about Stephen and Mary. I am happy to exchange information of course.

Regards
I have two different dates for him 16th March 1697 in Chiddingly and 6 October 1700 in Hellingly. His parents, I believe to be Thomas and Elizabeth Oliver and he married - again I believe a Mary Sargeant in 1772.

Frank Elphicke was born about 1827 and died 22.05.1875 at Cuckfield house Ilford Rd, Stratford Essex formerly lived in Agate house in the same road. Maria Jane , his widow, was the one who proved the will. (Evidence from will at First Avenue House, High Holborn.

Maria Jane Agate was born 1832 the 3rd child of Thomas Agate of Westup, Cuckfield, a farm of 230 acres employing 3 labourers (info from 1851 census)

Laura Alice as born 1867. I think there may have been children that died in the family but haven't traced them. Annie Maria was the eldest, Brett Agate the next, then Laura Alice, Jessie Emma, Frank Edwin and Florence Agnes.. The Son of Frank Edwin wmigrated to Canada and the descenddants are still there. (Look at 1871 census)

In the 1881 census Laura Alice as a boarder at Alexander House, Nottingham Road, Croydon with her sisters Florance and Jessie. I contacted the local records at Croydon and they said the school only appears in that census and there are no other records at all. It is typical of Victorian establishments, set up and run by a couple of people for a short time. A historian told me that girls were often sent away from home to make room for lodgers... that brought in more money...but there is no evidence of lodgers in the 1881 census in Frank's family.
All i know is Laura walked into the sea at Beachy Head, committing suicide because she suffered immense migraines!

Please let me know if i can help more and its great to find another distant relative..

Andrea Essery

Sorry, addition to that - this Mabel (my grandmother) was born around 1874 - the Trayton/Drayton Elphick married to Elizabeth, occupation is listed as bricklayer - our grandmother knew French well, we are told she was a governess in France, but cannot find evidence of this..apparently during the Irish Potato famine, shiploads of poor were sent out from England to Canada..

My name is Faith Lowcock - my father is the only known child of Mabel Elphick, her father was Freyton (Trayton) Elphick - there are two Trayton/Drayton Elphicks listed on the census, but only one birth, in Uckfield,Sussex. One was married to Charlotte Rebecca Frisby, the other married to Elizabeth (Fletchling,Sussex - a bricklayer), yet there are Harry's, Harriets, Elizas and Elizabeths in each family - whether they were the same person or closely related, is difficult to tell..hope this helps - Mabel and her brother Geoffrey (Godfrey?) immigrated to Fremantle,Australia. The Elphicks were early and relatively well-held landholders in Early Sussex.

Frank Edwin Elphicke married Charlotte (Lottie) Geraldine Hemming and they had 3 sons. Desmond George, born 1896, Frank Hemming, born 1900 and Cecil Gordon, born 1902. Cecil was my husband's father. I believe Frank and Marie, his father's name may have been Brett and his mother's name was Sarah Walker. I am not sure about this. However, if you go to FACEBOOK there is a list of Elphickes' there. I have been in touch with Charlie Elphicke and Eddie Elphick. It was Eddie who supplied me with a family tree for my husband's side of the family.

Re: Emily ELPHICK b. 1812 m. Henry AKEHURST 1832 Lewes

Hi Bonnie

I am descended from Henry Akehurst and Emily Elphick. We have been in touch before, but I had lost your email address and have just come across your posting.

Since we last corresponded I have found out that it is posssible that the baptism of Emily Elphick has been listed as Emma Elphick.

Also, I have done some further research on Henry and I think that the parents of Henry (married to Emily) are most likely to be Henry and Frances, for the following reasons.

From the 1851 census to the 1871 census Henry lists his birthplace as Hellingly. In these censuses he is also listed as 39, 49 and 59 years of age respectively. Given that the censuses were each held in the first half of the year it does tend to indicate that he was either born in 1812 or the latter half of 1811. I have commissioned some research for baptisms from 1810 - 1820 in the following parishes and only the Hellingly parish has any Henry's listed during this time.

Hailsham Transcriptions - searched 1810-1820

Herstmonceaux Transcriptions - searched 1810-1820

Chiddingly Transcriptions - searched 1810-1820

Arlington Transcriptions - searched 1810-1820

Waldron Transcriptions - searched 1810-1820

Heathfield Transcriptions - searched 1810-1820

Warbleton Transcriptions - searched 1810-1820

The Hellingly findings are as follows

Hellingly baptisms [ESRO: PAR375/1/1/3, mf XA30/67] - searched 1805-1808

30 October 1808 Henry son of John and Ann Akehurst

Hellingly baptisms [ESRO: PAR375/1/1/4, mf XA30/67] - searched 1809-1812

3 November 1811 Henry son of Henry and Frances Akehurst

Hellingly baptisms [ESRO: PAR375/1/2/1, mf XA30/67] - searched 1813-1826

16 October 1825 Henry son of John and Eliza Akehurst

1 January 1826 Henry son of Shem and Frances Akehurst

also for information 26 June 1825 Edwin son of Henry and Frances Akehurst

As you can see the only Henry listed as being the son of a Henry is the son of Henry and Frances. This Henry was also baptised in late 1811 and therefore it does fit in with an assumption of a late 1811 birthday.

From your posting it appears that your main reason for doubting that Henry and Frances was Henry's (bn 1811) parents is due to your informtion that the grandson Edwin Akehurst is the son of Henry Akehurst. I have just received a birth certficiate for an Edwin Akehurst born on 19 May 1840 in Hellingly. This certficiate lists his mother as Mary Ann Akehurst with no father being listed. This does fit in with the census details for Henry and Frances in the 1841 census and for Maryann being their daughter as listed and not their daughter-in-law. I have also received a marriage certficiate for an Edwin Akehurst to a Mary Pettet. The marriage took place in 1864 and Edwin is listed as 23 years of age. On the certificate the father's name is given as George Weakes. It's possible that this is the marriage certficate of Henry and France's grandson.

Also, on Henry's second marriage certficate it does say his father is deceased. The Henry married to Frances died in 1859.

I hope that I have provided some useful information that will gove you some additional leads.

Emily ELPHICK b. 1812 m. Henry AKEHURST 1832 Lewes

Who is Henry Akehurst's father also named Henry? I'm sending this to anyone and any list who might be able to help me. It's long, but, please be patient and read on to see if your ancestor is in this email. Names included: PAYNE, BROOK, TODD, ELPHICK, CHRISTMAS, KNIGHT, ALDRIDGE, PETTIT, HAISELDEN, HARMER, DEERING or DEARING, FRENCH, JENNER and JOY. I appreciate any little clue to this family history mystery. Thank you. Bonnie Lee

I don't think my Henry b. abt 1812 in Hellingly, England is the son of Henry Akehurst and Frances (Page) m. in Laughton 1810, because my Henry was happily (?) having children with his wife, Emily, in Herstmonceux during the time this Henry (Henry and Frances Page Akehurst's son) had a son, Edwin, baptized at Hellingly in 1840...unless, of course, he moved quickly between villages ;-)

In the 1841 Hellingly census, Edwin Akehurst, age 1, is with his grandparents, Henry and Frances. Edwin's parents, Henry and Mary Ann, are not there..unless, the Mary Ann enumerated as Henry and Frances' daughter is really a "daughter in law", which makes sense, as there is another younger daughter named Mary Ann also living there. At any rate, Henry Akehurst, father of Edwin, has disappeared by 1841. By 1851 Edwin (age 10) is still with his grandparents and Mary Ann is also gone.

Thus, the mystery of my Henry Akehurst begins. There are a couple of trees that link my Henry up as Henry and Frances' son, bap 3 Nov 1811 in Hellingly. Probably because that's the only Henry Akehurst found to be baptised in the Hellingly parish record in that time frame. I believe that Henry is not my Henry based on the above information.

This is what I know, so far. If anyone has anything to add I will be most grateful. Please contact me through the Akehurst list at Akehurst@yahoogroups.com . Family stories are welcomed. Please include sources. My sources are in parentheses.

My Henry AKEHURST is b. abt 1812 in Hellingly. This is consistent throughout all the (censuses). No baptism found in Herst or Hellingly. He
died 4 Jul 1879, age 67 (certificate) and is buried at the Congregational Chapel on Chapel Rd in Herstmonceux. I have a picture of the gravesite and
the chapel.

My Henry Akehurst married, 1st, Emily ELPHICK in St Anne's in Lewes 29 Oct 1832 (copy of church record)
Caroline's (Henry's daughter) birth (certificate) from Herstmonceux also states Emily Elphick is her mother. The tree that has Emily FULLER is
wrong, the IGI that has another wife, Emily BEAL m. 1875 may be wrong. I know of no 3rd marriage for Henry.

Henry and Emily had 8 children:

Henry bap 20 Jan 1833 Hellingly m. maybe Harriet CHRISTMAS
Elizabeth bap 14 Sep 1834 Hellingly can't find death or marriage
Albert bap 18 Dec 1836 Hellingly m. Ellen KNIGHT 1859 Herstmonceux. (copy of church record)
Emily Frances bap Dec 29 1839 Hellingly m. maybe John ALDRIDGE jr (BMD index)
James bap 5 Jun 1842 Herstmonceux m. prob Ann PETTIT of Ashburnham 1863 (copy church record)
Caroline bap 8 Feb 1845 Herstmonceux m. Eli HAISELDEN 1865 (certificate)
William Charles bap 20 Aug 1848 Herstmonceux m. Rosina HARMER 1869 (copy from church record)
Reuben bap 2 Oct 1852 Herstmonceux died, age 11, buried Hellingly 20 May 1863 (church record)

Emily Akehurst, age 51, is buried 26 Mar 1862 Hellingly (copy of church record)

Henry Akehurst then married, 2nd, my 2 g grandmother, Eliza (aka Liza) PAYNE, 29 May 1863 at Hailsham Independent Chapel. (Certificate) states Henry's father was also named Henry and was deceased). It is only 9 days after burying his son, Reuben. Henry is 31 years older than Eliza. Eliza's
parents are John PAYNE and Elizabeth DEERING of Heathfield. This is the only reference I have for Henry's father. Witnesses: Richard and Mary Ann BROOK who are next door neighbors to Henry and his 1st wife, Emily in the Herst. 1861 census. Are they related?

Henry Akehurst and Eliza had 4 children:

1. Sarah Elizabeth Payne Akehurst, b. Jun 1864 m. William JONES 1882, died 30 Jan 1883 and is buried at the Free Chapel (Congregational)
Herstmonceux with her father. (certificate, burial)

2.* John Henry Akehurst b. 25 Mar 1866 Herst. m. Rose Ellen JENNER 16 Oct 1887 at the Baptist Chapel in Hailsham. Parents: Albert JENNER and Mary Ann FRENCH both bap in Chiddingly. In 1888 John and Rose Ellen and newborn son, Albert (b. in Alfriston) emigrated from England
to West Hartford, CT, USA. He is my great grandfather. They had 6 children. I have all the descendents. Please contact me.

3. Asher Thomas (aka Tom) b. 1870 emigrated from England to Cleveland, Ohio, USA abt 1887 with mother, Eliza Akehurst. He married 1902
Laura A. ____. They had 2 known children:

Lucille Laura b. 26 Feb 1907 Ohio, m. Lloyd TODD (aft 1930) He died Costa Mesa, California Apr 1983.
Lucille died 23 May 1963, Ohio Any children of this couple? Please contact me

Thomas Carl (aka Carl) b. 17 Jan 1910, Ohio. May have died 1 Jan 1985 Green Valley, Pima, AZ (SSDI)
Marriage? Children? Please contact me.

4. George Harry b. 1873, Herst. died at age 12, 5 Nov 1884 and is buried with his sister and father at the Cong. chapel in Herstmonceux

Eliza Payne Akehurst m. 2nd, Ernest J. JOY at Cuyahoga Co, OH, USA abt 1910. No children from this union, but, there were step children from
Ernest Joy's first marriage.

Eliza Payne Akehurst Joy, widow, died 6 Aug 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio at her son Thomas's home (Death notice, Cleveland, Ohio).

The family joke was Eliza was a PAYNE, an AKE and finally a JOY. That little story helped me find her, finally, in Ohio.

Yours in research, Bonnie Lee Corban Mom was an Akehurst
I also have Ellen Harriet Elphick in my tree but in my tree she married?? James Salter of Tiverton Devon and moved to Liverpool circa 1870 I also found her in a Brighton school as a servant in 1861. I wonder how many Ellens there are, I have seen on these posts a number purporting to be the same person marrying different people!!

HI Julian

My Great Grandfather is George Harold Elphick - born 1850 in the UK and his name can be found in the Middlesex county records of the time. He married an Annie Baker. My Grandfather is Thomas Charles Elphick born 1884 - also Middlesex (married to Florence Beatrice Chandler) and he (Thomas Charles) came out to NZ with two or three of his brothers - one of whom was named Bernard........I think this was in about 1912.

I have also just started looking at my Elphick family roots so maybe there's some common ground there?

Would like to hear what you have found out.

Philippa
