Hello Ann,

Regarding Braunton: yes, I agree it's a distance from Morchard, and I have found no evidence of any connection with Braunton. I merely put the suggestion "out there" in case it rang a bell with anyone reading this. It seemed such an unexpected proposal, I didn't know what to make of it before. But now it seems Nathaniel married again in 1664, I though I should mention it.

As for the descriptions in the MB burial register, "Thomas son of Thomas", I have always supposed, was so described to identify Nathaniel's brother (ie, Thomas jr, presumably unmarried), as opposed to his father, still living then, and probably buried 26 Nov 1687 in Morchard Bishop.

The practice of identifying the burials in MB where possible in the register does seem to be almost invariable, and I would suggest it's at least as good evidence for the burial of an unmarried Mary in 1674 as the coincidence of the dates of Nathaniel's daughter Anne and the lack of further children is suppport for the inference of the death of Nathaniel's wife. Especially since there's an obvious candidate for the unmarried Mary.

As for the identity of Nathaniel's wife Mary Tucker, I see now what you were trying to say. Of course one must exercise caution, especially if the records were sparse (were they? I haven't seen those BTs). As I said, there may have been other Marys, but she seems an obvious candidate. It's surely not true that "it would be wrong to conclude that this Mary Tucker is the one who married Nathaniel". It might be unwise. But it does seem likely to be the right conclusion, doesn't it?

Sorry if I'm being pedantic.

Hey ho. I do wish I lived nearer to the DRO...

Mike

Good points, Mike.

You say:
"1. One interesting aspect of this discovery is that the licence describes Nathaniel as "of Morchard Bishop", indicating that he had moved from Shobrooke and was already living in MB before marrying Mary Tucker (who was quite probably born there). But there's no reason to suppose that he lived there with his first wife Joan."

I agree. I looked for baptisms and burials of children of Joan and Nathaniel in Exeter, and for Joan’s death in Exeter. So far, no luck.

"2. A correspondent told me once that he believed Nathaniel's first child of whom we know (John bapt. MB 25 Jun 1665) was born in Braunton in 1664, but I never found out what basis or evidence he had for this."

Braunton?? Well, it’s a long way away and would sure hide a pregnancy, if John was indeed born in 1664. But if the IGI is right, Nathaniel and Mary didn’t get married in Braunton.

"3. First, I think it's questionable whether the Mary Elston buried 1674 in Morchard Bishop was Nathaniel's wife, though I don't think she was Nathaniel's 8-year-old daughter, either. This burial is not annotated 'wife of ...', 'widow of ...' or 'daughter of ...' (which annotations appear to be consistent practice in the MB burials register of this time when appropriate), so she is almost certainly an unmarried woman over 21. [The obvious choice is Nathaniel's sister, young enough to have come to MB with her parents (and her brothers Nathaniel and Thomas, at least), and by now aged 30, though there is also a burial listed in Sandford on 23 Apr 1655 of a Mary Elstone "daughter of Thomas" who might be the daughter of Thomas and Anne of Shobrooke.]
"This would mean that Mary's burial, like Joan's, is yet to be found (and not in Morchard Bishop, apparently)."

I take your point, but I think the sequence of the baptism of Anne, the burial of Mary, and the death of Anne within 2 months, and the subsequent lack of children for Nathaniel can support the inference that Mary was Nathaniel’s wife. I agree that usually the practice is as you say, but then who is “Thomas the son of Thomas Elston” who is buried in 1660”? If he is indeed a young boy, then is he the son of Nathaniel’s older brother? And if so, where did the rest of that family go? [I am just doubtful that the practice was invariable, and that the person making the entry knew what importance we'd be placing on it.]

"4. Second, I don't understand how you think the existence of at least 4 John Tuckers in MB in the 1640s would affect the question of whether the Mary Tucker you mentioned, baptised in 1641, was in fact Nathaniel's wife. There may have been other Mary Tuckers, but all you're saying, I think, is that we don't know which John Tucker was father of that one. She certainly seems an obvious candidate, unless I'm missing something."

I guess I expressed myself poorly. My point was that while the 1641 Mary Tucker might be the one who married Nathaniel, there are - twenty - adult male Tuckers in Morchard Bishop in the 1640s, any one of whom could have had a daughter named Mary, and probably many of them did. I thought finding a baptism of a single Mary Tucker in 1641 wass almost too good to be true, and required a certain caution.

Anyway, it is a pleasure to have a reasoned debate on these points, and I hope it will continue.

Regards,

Ann Phillips

Hi Ann, thanks very much for letting us know about this very significant new finding.

One interesting aspect of this discovery is that the licence describes Nathaniel as "of Morchard Bishop", indicating that he had moved from Shobrooke and was already living in MB before marrying Mary Tucker (who was quite probably born there). But there's no reason to suppose that he lived there with his first wife Joan.

A correspondent told me once that he believed Nathaniel's first child of whom we know (John bapt. MB 25 Jun 1665) was born in Braunton in 1664, but I never found out what basis or evidence he had for this.

Two further observations:
This would mean that Mary's burial, like Joan's, is yet to be found (and not in Morchard Bishop, apparently).

She certainly seems an obvious candidate, unless I'm missing something.

Not that either of these points lessens the importance of your discovery. I hope we can find a record of the marriage, as of course the existence of a licence isn't evidence that the marriage actually took place; it is, however, certainly evidence that his first wife Joan (Styling) must have died before then, so Nathaniel must have married again by the time John was baptised in 1665, and presumably to Mary Tucker! Such as shame that the allegation appears not to have survived (and that John Henry Mann didn't include any more details...)

Best wishes and thanks again,

Mike Elston

New ancestor for Morchard Bishop Elstons

Hello, Elstons from Morchard Bishop.
We have a new ancestor! Her name is Mary Tucker, and she married Nathaniel Elston in 1664. That is, Nathaniel got a marriage license from the Bishop of Exeter on July 29, 1664, although I haven’t found the actual marriage yet.
This means a number of revisions to the family tree. Joan Stylinge, thought to be the mother of Nathaniel’s six children born between 1665 and 1675, now would appear to have died before any of them were born. Mary herself is very likely the “Mary Elston” who was buried in Morchard Bishop 31 January 1675 [1674 Old Style], between the baptism and burial of Nathaniel’s daughter Anne [5 January and 28 February]. If that is right, then Nathaniel’s second child Mary Elston survived past that date.
What is the source for this information? Diocesan records in the Devon Record Office, Exeter, specifically the Act Book for 10 Apr 1641 to 28 September 1668, which has the following marriage licence issue entry for July 29, 1664:
Lima matrimony inter Nathanelem
Elsdon de Morchard Epi et Mariam
Tucker do eodem
“Lima” is believed to be an ecclesiastical abbreviation for the Latin equivalent of “Licence marriage”. “matrimony” is therefore redundant and in English rather than Latin. The entry reads “Licence to marry between Nathaniel Elsdon of Morchard Bishop [Episcopal] and Mary Tucker of the same place”.
The lead to the diocesan records came from a book maintained by the Devon and Cornwall Record Society at the West Country Studies Library in Exeter, entitled “Exeter Marriage Licences 1631-1668 & Index”, compiled by John Henry Mann in 1939. Under “Elsdon” in the index was the entry ´Elsdon,Nathaniel of Morchard Bishop and Mary Tucker of same	undated”. It was apparent from the context [entries above and below] that the date was probably July 29, 1664.

A second publication of the D&CRS, “Marriage Allegations Devon and Cornwall Indexes 1660-1733”, also compiled by Mann, indicated a record for “Nathaniell Elston” in “6/55”.
Marriage licences were issued by the bishop, in this case the Bishop of Exeter, or one of his clerks, when a marriage allegation, stating the names of the parties intending to marry, their residence, and whether or not they were of full age [and if not, the consent of their parent was also required], and where the marriage was to take place. The licence was given to the minister performing the marriage ceremony, and only very rarely retained.
Unfortunately, there was no marriage allegation despite the reference in the index : the archivist said that only allegations from January to March 1664 survived. He expected that many had perished from damp, although they presumably available to Mann in 1939-40.
Loose ends abound: When did Joane Stylinge Elston die, and where is she buried? Who is Mary Tucker? Where did Nathaniel and Mary marry?
When did Joane die? If she died before Morchard Bishop re-established its parish records in 1660, there is no hope of finding her burial in Morchard Bishop. There – were- earlier parish records, some of which were copied and appear in bishop’s transcripts, but none for the Commonwealth years [1645-1660], and many other years are missing: 1634-47, 1642 and 1643. She is not buried in Shobrooke, her birthplace. Did she and Nathaniel have any children? Not after 1660 in Morchard Bishop, at any rate.
Who is Mary Tucker? The Morchard Bishop bishop’s transcripts have a baptism for a Mary Tucker:
Christenings Anno Dom 1641
Mary the daughter of John Tucker bapt the same day [as the previous entry, 5th of December]
While this seems a good fit, because Nathaniel’s first born in Morchard Bishop in 1665 was named John, and because Mary’s age is just 3 years younger than Nathaniel’s, it would be wrong to conclude that this Mary Tucker is the one who married Nathaniel. There were four adult John Tuckers in Morchard Bishop who signed the Protestation Oath in 1642, any one of whom could have been Mary’s father, and 16 other adult male Tuckers. See Bob Pope’s Morchard Bishop Appendix 5 page in Genuki at http://genuki.cs.ncl.ac.uk/DEV/MorchardBishop/MorchardBishop....
Looking for the marriage record for Nathaniel and Mary is the next challenge. Here are some the places it isn’t: None of the parishes covered by the IGI, none of these non-IGI Exeter churches [Exeter Cathedral, Heavitree, Holy Trinity, St David, St Edmund, St Mary Steps, St Olave, St Petrock, St Sidwell, St Thomas.] Specifically remaining and not yet checked are All Hallows Wall, St Mary Arches, St Mary Steps,St Pancras. You wonder why Nathaniel would take such pains to obtain a marriage licence: as the crow flies, the distance between Morchard Bishop and Exeter is 13.6 miles, a significant journey, especially if they didn’t marry in either place.

If any of you would like further information, including jpegs of the Acts Books [diocesan records], please let me know.

Ann Phillips
Hi,

This is my first time trying message boards in a desperate attempt keep the trail hot so to speak, so I don't think we've spoken before. Thank you for reply, though.

The Thomas Elston of Morchard Bishop, yes, that's the Thomas I am related to. Married to an Anne and those kids were born in Shoebrooke.

As for John, being Thomas' father, I probably should have worded that a little differently. I believe it is John who is his father. But, unfortunately, it is only a 'gut instinct' assumption on my part. Sorry to seem misleading. I am aware of Phillip Elston and the Thomas Elston of Newton St. Cyres too.

As for my place in the family tree, it's right down at the down at the bottom. My great-great grandfather Thomas Elston of Knowstone, South Molton, Devon was born in roughly 1843 give or take a year (it all depends on which document I am looking at) and immigrated to Canada (still trying to pin down the date) where he died in the Middlesex District of Ontario in June of 1905.

If you're interested, I would love to share/learn more about the Elstons. I don't have an ancestry account, so I can't reach you any other way except on the message board. Feel free to reach me either here or at my email: southamwj@hotmail.com

Hi Karen

John Elston married Elizabeth Prust on 3 Nov 1636 in Monkleigh, Devon, and they had a daughter Elizabeth baptised there on 24 Sep 1637.

I had not realised that they had sailed to America, nor that he was the same John Elston who sailed to America as a carpenter with the Winthrop fleet in 1630. Last thing I heard, it had not been established where this John Elston was born, or even whether he came from Devon.

I haven't seen the book by James Elston, unfortunately, though I would love to -- I have heard a lot of people talking about it.

I would love to learn more about this John Elston. Unfortunately, John Elston was quite a common name, and I have not discovered which John Elston married Elizabeth. It has been suggested that he came from Bideford in Devon, but I don't know that came from.

Re: Elston Family in Devon England

Hi,

I'm not sure if we have been in touch before. Yes, there are many Elston families of Devon, and many of them have already been shown to be related (and like you I believe they are probably all related somehow). There is also a large Elston family from Nottinghamshire (not related) and maybe other smaller families not related in other parts of England. Most of the Elstons around the world are descended from either the Devon family or the Nottinghamshire family.

Is your ancestor the Thomas Elson whose children were baptised in Shobrooke, and who moved with his sons Thomas (1634) and Nathaniel (1638) and daughter Mary (1644) to Morchard Bishop? He is the only Thomas Els(t)on I know of about then in Devon whose wife was named Anne. We believe Anne was buried in Morchard Bishop in 1678, and Thomas in 1687.

A number of us have been trying for some time to identify this Thomas, and I would be very interested to hear how you have discovered that his father's name was John.

Thomas Elston son of John was bap. 22 Dec 1611 in Crediton. It is certainly possible that he was the husband of Anne and father of Nathaniel et al, though it would have been surprising, as he would probably have been aged only 17 when Thomas and Anne's eldest daughter Elizabeth was baptised on 12 Jun 1629.

Others who may have been Nathaniel's father include Thomas Elston son of Philip, bap. 20 Dec 1607 in Crediton, and Thomas Elston son of Thomas, bap. 16 Sep 1604 in Newton St Cyres.

The descendants of Thomas and Ann Elston, who lived in Morchard Bishop for many generations, are many, and mostly very well documented. Where do you fit in? Would love to hear more from you, either here or privately (you can click on my name to find out how contact me). I've been researching the Elstons of Devon for some years now, and have a large database of some 12,000 of their descendants, spouses and related families.

I am trying to trace back my Elston roots in Devon, England. I know there are many different Elston families (probably all related somehow) and I would love to be able to link them together if possible

I am descended from Thomas Elston (Elson) born a. 1611 in Credition, Devon.
Hi there,

That's brilliant news, thanks very much for posting that information. Can you make out the names of the witnesses?

Yes, John sr. was the son of George Elston and Sarah Cross, marr. 21 Feb 1773 in Crediton. They had at least 6 children. George died in 1829; I believe he was the son of George Elston and Elizabeth Ruddaway marr. 14 Feb 1737/38 in Crediton. I haven't identified George sr yet; he was probably either George Elston born in nearby Sandford c1713, or perhaps more likely the George Elston born in Crediton c1716. Sarah, I believe, was the daughter of John Cross and Ann Pulman marr. 13 Dec 1741 in Crediton.

How are you connected to John and Charlotte?

Hi,

I have a copy of John Elston and Charlotte Proctor's marriage certificate. It reads as follows:

Married: April 4, 1843
Name: John Elston
Age: 21
Condition: Bachelor
Profession: Shoemaker
Residence: Park Street Crediton
Father's Name: John Elston
Profession of Father: Shoemaker

Name: Charlotte Proctor
Age: 20
Condition: Spinster
Residence: unable to read the handwriting
Father's name: Nathaniel Proctor
Profession: Farmer

Married in the Presbyterian Chapel according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Unitarians.

You were right. The father and mother of John Elston was John Elston and Grace Ward. I believe his grandparents were George Elston and Sarah Cross.

Obit: Richard Joseph Elston

Reprinted with permission of the Albuquerque Journal
March 18, 2004

Astronomy Professor Richard Elston Helped Find Young Stars
By Paul Logan
Journal Staff Writer
Richard Elston received a telescope on his eighth Christmas in 1968.
Inspired by NASA's Apollo space program and the $49.95 Kmart scope, the Albuquerque boy began his celestial career.
Elston, a University of Florida astronomy professor, collaborated in 2003 in the discovery of seven young stars, about 1,000 light years away, where planets are forming.
The breakthrough could lead astronomers to expand the areas in which they search for new planets, according to the university's Web site.
Elston, 43, died Jan. 26 in Gainesville, Fla., of Hodgkin's lymphoma, said his father, Wolf Elston, a semi-retired University of New Mexico geology professor.
"He was very easy-going, very cheerful," his father said. "He was sick for four years, but you'd never know it just meeting him casually. He was very much on the upbeat."
He said his son probably was proud of designing and supervising the building of FLAMINGOS— Florida Multi-object Imaging Near-IR Grism Observational Spectrometer.
Elston oversaw the $4 million project funded by the National Science Foundation.
He and his wife, Elizabeth Lada, also a Florida astronomy professor, made the discovery using the instrument— which when packed is about the size of a freezer— at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona.
FLAMINGOS uses infrared imaging to observe tens of thousands of stars each night— many more than could be examined without the instrument. Their observation could lead astronomers to expand the areas in which they search for new planets, the Web site said.
The New York Times of May 27, 2003, explained the significance of the discovery: "Planets may form around distant stars more rapidly than previously thought, and some of these planetary systems could be far more extensive than the Sun's."
Richard Joseph Elston was born July 1, 1960, in Albuquerque. His father said he had at least four advantages in life:
An older brother, Steve, who was generous and protective;

# A sense of wonder and curiosity which he retained as an adult;

# An intellect that allowed Elston to put his gifts to practical use; and

# "Last, and most important of all, he had the extraordinary good fortune to find a perfect match in Elizabeth."
As a seventh grader in the early 1970s, Elston was assembling circuit boards. The only item on his Christmas list was a floppy disk, but his parents didn't know what it was at the time, his father said.
After graduating from Albuquerque High School, Elston went to UNM on an academic scholarship, majoring in physics and astronomy.
UNM professor Marcus Price, past chairman of the physics and astronomy department, said most of the faculty would remember Elston as "one of the best (students) we had over the last 25 years."
Price said Elston's instrument will be used by other astronomers in years to come. "In a sense it is part of his legacy, and it will allow— as we say in the sciences— others to stand on his shoulders and see further," Price said.
He later received fellowships from NASA and the NSF to attend the University of Arizona, earning a doctorate.
He was an astronomer at an observatory in Chile about five years. Elston and Elizabeth were married in 1996.
They joined the University of Florida faculty in 1997.
He was recognized in 1999 with the NSF Career Grant for his contributions as a designer of optical instruments and as an observer of the formation and evolution of galaxies.
He received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2000— only 10 scientists from all disciplines are honored annually, his father said.
Elston's mother, Lorraine, a journalist, died in 2000. Other survivors include a son, Joseph, 4.
Elston succeeded in life despite dyslexia, a learning disability that affects a person's ability to read. His father said his son's example may "encourage others who suffer from the affliction."
A memorial service will be held Friday in Gainesville.
Donations may be made to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, P.O. Box 27106, New York, N.Y. 10087. Please specify in memory of Richard Elston and in support of the work of Dr. Owen O'Connor.

William H ELSTON and Sarah J SCOTT Michigan, after 1880

I am looking for any information on this couple. William was born November 1840 in Michigan and Sarah was born August 1849 in New York. They had a daughter, Jessie M ELSTON born January 1870 in Michigan living with them in Calhoun County, Michigan on the 1880 census. It appears that Sarah died (or they were divorced) prior to 1900 when William is located on the 1900 census with a second wife, Alice A WARE. Neither Jessie nor Sarah can be located in the 1900 census. A check for cemetery listing for Calhoun and two other counties does not list them. Any additional information would be appreciated.

A. C. Vanderwater ELSTON Biography, NY<WI<IL<WI

From "History of Grant County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 963 - 964.

TOWN OF MUSCODA

A. C. VANDERWATER ELSTON, of the firm Elston & McIntyre, general store, and dealers in live stock, railroad ties, etc., Muscoda; was born in Unionville, Orange Co., N. Y., Sept. 9, 1845. He is a son of S. B. and Hannah E. Myers, both natives of New York, and whose ancestors were among the earliest settlers of that State. In 1855, they came to Muscoda, where he bought the Wisconsin House, and kept the hotel for fifteen years; then bought a farm in the town of Eagle, Richland Co., and retired from the hotel business. He died in the war of 1879. H. C. V. Elston came to Muscoda with his parents in 1855, and lived with them until 1863, when he engaged as clerk in the store of McDonald & Graham, where he was employed four years, when he went to Chicago, and took a course in the Commercial College of Bryant & Stratton; returned to the employ of McDonald & Graham, where he remained until the spring of 1867, when he engaged with the Merchants' Union Express Co. at Milwaukee as private secretary for the General Manager, H. B. Honsdale. Returning to Muscoda November of the year, he went into business as partner with Peter B. McIntyre. The copartnership continued for ten years, under the firm name of McIntyre & Elston, when Mr. McIntyre retired from the firm, transferring his interest to his son, since which time the firm has been McIntyre & Elston. He was married, Dec. 16, 1864, to Miss Julania Lane, who was born in Platteville, and a daughter of Henry C. Lane, who came to Platteville from Warren, Ohio, in 1837, first engaging in blacksmithing, after the hardware business. He retired from business thirteen years ago. Mr. E. has two children - one boy and one girl. He has always been in active business life, and accumulated his estate by his own persevering industry.

[I'm not related to this family. I'm posting this as a service and hope it helps!]

Hello Diane, I already have a scanned copy of the children and I can tell you with certainty that they are the great grand children of Joseph and Eliza. Their father was Joseph Henry Elston, son of William Elston, son of Joseph and Eliza. Joseph Henry was known as Harry. They lived in Flint Michigan and I knew all three of them and their two younger brothers Verne and Charles and their parents. They were my father's first cousins. I am a 2xgreat grand daughter of Joseph and Eliza and if you are also a descendent of them I would love to share with you.
Joyce in Canada

I believe that Thomas Elston was an alias for Robert Jillett, or Robert Gillett. He was tried at The Old Bailey on 11/1/1797 and sentenced to transportation to Australia. He arrived in Australia per Hillsborough on 20/10/1798. His wife and five children were left behind in England. I do not know anything about them.
I have quite a lot of information on him and I am descended from his daughter, Rebecca Elizabeth.

I have very little knowledge of my elston roots and all I know is that my great great grandfather Fredrick Elston was born in 1859 in Devon I know he married a Bessie Dinnicombe in Tiverton in 1884.
I defiantly know they had a daughter called Francis Hannah Elston who was born in 1887 again in Devon i am guessing Tiverton as that's where they married.
They have been found on the 1891 Census living in Tiverton

Any advice would be a great help

Thomas Elston and Elizabeth Pope, marr. 1722 Devon

A document has been brought to my attention which shows that Elizabeth Pope who married Thomas Elston of Morchard Bishop, Devon, in 1722 is not an Elizabeth Pope born in Morchard Bishop, as we thought she might have been.

The marriage allegation describes Elizabeth as Elizabeth Pope of Morchard Bishop, spinster, daughter of John Pope of Cheriton Fitzpaine. The licence is dated 8 Sep 1722, the day before they were married in St Peter's Cathedral, Exeter.

Elizabeth Pope the daughter of John Pope was baptised on 11 Feb 1695/96 in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon. The parish register doesn't say who her mother was; her father was probably the John Pope baptised in Cheriton Fitzpaine on 1 May 1672, described on the IGI as son of Joshua.

I'm posting this message so that everyone researching the Elstons of Morchard Bishop can correct their data if necessary. I know there are a lot of us out there!

If you want further details, please contact me.

Mike Elston

As far as I know, Benjamin and Jane's son John Elston (bapt Knowstone 17 Nov 1822) married Susan Fisher in 1845. John who married Charlotte claimed to have been born in Crediton, and almost certainly was.

If it's important to you, you should order a copy of John & Charlotte's marriage certificate from www.gro.gov.uk [ref: Marriages Jun 1843, Crediton, vol 10 page 133: Elston, John and Procter, Charlotte]. That should tell you his father's name and occupation, and might also tell his age too. Do let us know if you do!

Mike Elston

Hi Fiona

Yes, Frederick Elston who married Bessie Dinnecombe in 1884 in Tiverton was born in Tiverton in 1859; he was the son of Samuel Elston and Elizabeth Harris, who married 4 Oct 1832 in Morchard Bishop, one of 11 children. Samuel was one of four children of Samuel Elston and Ann Cheriton, who married 27 Jul 1803 in Morchard Bishop (it was a second marriage for both of them). Samuel was the son of John Elston who married Alice Baker on 3 Feb 1745/46 in Morchard Bishop.

Frederick and Bessie Elston had at least 6 children: Laura (1885), Frances Hannah (1887), Ruby (1889), and Dora (1891), who were born in Tiverton before they moved to Silverton in the mid-1890s where were born Bert (1896) and John (1899).

Hope this helps -- please contact me if you want further information.

Best wishes, Mike

Re: John Elston

I'm related to Clari Hookway who married John and Charlotte's son Fred, and also perhaps to John Elston himself. Unfortunately I've found it very difficult to identify John's parents; he appears to have been born 1821/1824; I have for a while suspected he was the son of John Elston and Grace Ward, who were married 12 Aug 1798 in Crediton, but I have been unable to prove it.

Charlotte was the daughter, I believe, of Nathaniel Proctor born 1785 (son of Nathaniel Procter & Ann Good who were married 15 Aug 1775 in Crediton) and his wife Ann, whom I haven't yet identified.

John and Charlotte had at least 11 children, in fact, but so far I've only traced descendants of two of them: Fred (1849), and George (1858) who married Alice Howard.

I too would be very interested in further information about the family, and in particular any sources describing the boot and shoe industry in 19th-century Crediton, in which so many Elstons were involved (there were at least 3 factories owned by Elstons, and many of their relatives were employed in them or as out-workers!).

Mike Elston
[Researching the Elstons of Devon, especially those of Sandford and Crediton]
Alice Elston & James Lord

I just came across a marriage for Alice Elston and James Lord in 1857 Haslingden, St. James. in the Lancashire BMD. I am looking for anyone that may have some information on this marriage/family.

According to family stories, one Lord brother died in Fall River and remains were sent back to England for burial. I just located a death record for James Lord whom died in Fall River, MA at age 70, married. James' residence and burial are listed as England. His mother is listed as Alice Ellstone, but I believe this may have been his wife rather than mother. Father is George Lord and mother would be Alice Sutcliffe. Possibly for some reason relatives decided to give his wife's name rather than mother on death record - both were Alice. I did have an Alice as James' wife prior through censuses, but did not have a last name.

My 3rd great grandfather, John Lord, did have a brother James born abt 1830 which would fit age wise. This is the only death record fitting brother's names listing England as residence and place of burial. So I am thinking he may have passed on while visiting family in US. Since male death records do not list spouses names, may be why someone chose to list wife's name as mother.

Trying to find out if I am headed in the right direction or just on a wild goose chase here. Any help appreciated.

Thank you,
Elizabeth
