Obit: Michael J MORRISON bn 1919 South Uist, died 1998 Canada

Hi,

Does anyone recognise any of the families named below. If so could they contact me on Ancestry.com or Rootsweb please. My grandfather Alexander was the brother of Michael Joseph who emigrated to Canada with his brother Malcolm in the early 1900's. The family lived at Cille Pheadair (Kilpheder) South Uist.

Classification: Obituary
Surnames: MORRISON, Elsworth, Phillips, Johnson, Farrell, Marchioni
The following obituary was published in The Vancouver Sun newspaper (British Columbia, Canada) on 11 September 1998. Every effort was made to record this info accurately but, if you have a connection to this family, please verify the info in the original source.
Condolences go out to the family for their loss.

MORRISON -- Michael Joseph, born May 31, 1919, in South UIST, died peacefully with his daughters at his side on September 7, 1998 at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Predeceased by his loving spouse Nora, "Iron Mike" is survived by his devoted sister Flora Elsworth and leaves his daughters Donna, Lynne, Trudy and Rhonda; grandchildren Jamie, Janine, Shana, Michael, Claudia, Tyler, Deanna, Alexandra and great-grandchildren Marissa and Shoal. Mike's family emigrated from the Scottish Island of Uist in the twenties to the Canadian prairie farm communities of North Battleford and Clandonald. Here he met and married his Nora. A proud, generous and caring human being, he was admired for his strength and honesty that provided for his family through good times and lean. No one is more aware and appreciative of Mike's greatest legacies than his sons-in-law Pat Phillips, Rick Johnson, Bob Farrell and John Marchioni. "Slainte" Mike!
Services at St. Mary's, 5251 Joyce St., Vancouver. Prayers will be offered Thursday, September 10, 6:30 p.m. and a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, September 11 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Ocean View Cemetery followed by a reception at the Holiday Inn Metrotown. The daughters ask that donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in lieu of flowers please.

Looking for any info anyone has about this Mary/ Maria Ellsworth/Ailsworth/Aylsworth who married Norman MASON on 24 April 1844 in Middlesex County, VA. They were the parents of my g-grandfather, James Norman MASON, b. September 1856, d. Savannah, GA 8 Feb. 1929. Apparently there were twin boys, at least on one census, named James Norman, the other Norman James, both age 15. They had several other children also, daughters Ella (we believe her first name was Sarah) and Martha. The name "Norman" appears in a couple of different forms on census indices "Norbin", "Norrison" among them. Any info would be appreciated. We have been searching for the correct MASON family for several years and believe we have it at long last.

I do wish your family Bible contained some reference to our John Elsworth!! Our John was born in 1824 and his brother, George, in 1829. John and George were from Ripon and arrived in Mobile, Alabama, USA, about 1842. They married two young ladies they met on the boat over. John's five sons are named: Henry, William, George, John, and Andrew Jackson Elsworth...the youngest apparently being named in honor of the American president.

Does your John's father, Henry Elsworth, have brothers? Could our John possibly be a cousin to your John? Please contact me directly at: mart2542@aol.com

My cousin, Jan Davis-Shannon, and I are trying to trace our ELSWORTH family and want to keep in touch with you directly. Thank you.

I'm afraid I cannot help you but I am fascinated by your message because my family of Elsworth came from Pateley Bridge near Ripon. I have a family Bible that enables me to trace them our ancestors from the late 1700s back to the 1500s but between 1780 and 1822 the trail runs cold. The sons seem to have moved away from Pateley Bridge at this time, presumably tempted away by the industrial revolution.
My great great grandfather John Elsworth was born in 1822 or 1823. He was son of Henry Elsworth and at the time of his marriage in 1845 was living in Leeds. He died in Doncaster in 1866, and so we are searching for different Johns.
I am writing to you only with the feint hope that you might have come across another John Elsworth during your researches. Regards

Mary,
Yes I am both B Rudeen and BWR> Again, thank you. I messed up. I knew that Freda didn't die until 1921 in Mitchell. GGrandfather George died in 1918 of Flu epidemic. This is my grandmothers family. After Freda died, the kids had to be raised by someone else. I know absolutely no information on George's family. I think he was born on April 6, 1883 in Cannon Falls Minnesota, though I know someone listed him as born in Carmon Minnesota. He died Dec. 6, 1918 in Woonsocket, SD. I do not know where Freda and George met. Where she went after immigrating from Sweden-though I think it was Minnesota. I do not know when or where they married. But I have a deep desire to know. I never knew my grandmother Leona. SHe died when my father was 6. Somehow, she ended up in Boone, IA> and met my grandfather FranK Loren Wheeler. Through a letter from Leona;s sister, Meg, in 1990's, Meg states, after Freda died Leona was raised by Aunt Cora (Coe). I do not know if (COE) is a last name or a nickname and there is no Cora in any of Freda (Johannson) Ellsworth's
relatives. The letter does not state if the rest of the children were raised by this Cora. I do not know who she is. If you find any other information regarding these people--of need more dates on them to find it, I would love to have it. Thanks!

He established a crockery business in Mobile. On the 1880 Mobile Co census, John's parents are listed as born in England; the parents of his wife, Bridget, were born in Ireland. John and Bridget had five sons. If anyone can help in identifying the parents of John Elsworth, please contact me. Thank you.
