I found the Chapter re: the Elton's of Herefordshire on a Google Online book of the Mayo's and Elton's. I decided to change it to text, but it still required the whole evening to correct all of the typos, mainly f's were appearing in place of s's.... And it seemed that way on the original documents too, which I don't understand. Very strange...

Anyways, I traced my lineage to John Elton of Hereforddshire, born about 1777, married to an Ann Meyrick... but I cannot go older than that, and I cannot link it to the Elton's of Ledbury noted in the above article.

The family-tree stuff can go great for a while, then you hit a wall... I'm in the middle of my free 2 week trial. If I decide not to continue further, I hope all my work does not disappear...

If anyone wants the article still, with typos corrected, I think I have a copy that's 99.9% correct. Phew!

Cheers,

Dave Elton

Hi Frank,

I would love to have a copy of that section of the book transcribed on the Elton's of Herefordshire. I just discovered my roots this week. I live in Keswick, Ontario, Canada. I can trace my roots back to John Elton & Ann Meyrick. If anyone can link further back from them, that would be great.
I can be reached at elton.dave@gmail.com

Thank you,

Dave Elton
Lineage: Robert, Alfred, Charles, Joseph, John
Hi again. I have been working on the Elton family tree for about five years, In that time I have come across Eltons in many parts of the U.S. I do believe my ancesters settled in Philadelphia , Pa. and then moved to the southern part of the state of New Jersy in and around the counties of Burlington and Glouster.
I'll start with my grandfather(Frank Elton). There is some question as to his actual birthdate. He was born between 1872 and 1874 to Joseph and Mary Elton in Philadelpa,Pa. According to the 1880 census there were five children ,Willian,Clarence,Ellen,George and Frank my grandfather. The census indicates Joseph Elton was born abvout 1813 in England and his wife Mary born about 1835 in the United Kingdom.
I cannot confirm at the present that Joseph and Mary are my great grandparents due to lack of documents but I'm certain based upon information from my father and other family members.
You can reach me directly at R.Eltonfrontiernet.net
Hi Bob Elton!

Thanking you ever so much for your kind reply.

The names of Joseph & Mary Elton are exactly what we have of a family possibly emigrating to the USA. In what year is unknown and as to which State they settled in is also not known. In our family tree the same names of Joseph & Mary are repeated numerous times in each decade both in the Elton & Bott families right up to this day!

I am confident that the Joseph & Mary that you mention were from the County of Derbyshire in the Middle of England.

Any further advice from you Bob will be greatly appreciated.

A very Happy New Year to you & your family from our family in Perth, Western Australia.

She married Henry McCallum, a Canadian, and so dad's name changed to Hubert Finley McCallum. Don't know the reason why his first name had changed. He passed away on September 23, 2008, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Ellen Roseanne Elton McCallum's father was Julia Ann Elton and Abraham Elton.

Sarah Laura Elton was my great-grandmother. She was born to Frank Joseph Elton and Minnie Adhemar, 27 Mar 1889, in Canterbury, Litchfield, CT. She was married to Charles August Gregory on 4 Jan 1905. They had 3 children, including my grandmother, Mildred Gregory. Sarah died on 30 Jul 1966 and is buried at Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill, CT. I was wondering if anyone has info about the Elton family. I know that my ancestry goes back to England through this line. I also have other lines....Foote, Stow, Churchill...among others who came to CT from England.

There are two others on here that I've been messaging who are also related. One is pam elton and the other one is shellih@2yahoo.com...look to see their connections as well. You and I are related through Dr. Thomas as well. They are parents to Col. Richard Elton,1610; who has a son, Isaac, who has a son, Abraham, and Abraham's son, William went to Ireland and had Abraham 1760-1826; Anthony 1753-1835; Malcolm 175?-? and James 1790-?. Abraham had a son, Abraham born 1760-1859 who went to Montecello, Arkansas. This was my gr-gr-grandfather. There were three other brothers; John 1788-1858, Charles 1790-1858, Robert 1792-1830, and James (no dates).(I think I counted abt 7 Abraham's in a row) This does make us distant cousins.

Only some names, as well as Somerset have any connection..so far. I don't even see a "Whitechapel", although there is a "Whitestaunton Manor" in my book. Have you looked into message boards for other connections? There are so many Elton's and many of the names are repeated...such as Charles and Thomas and Abraham and Isaac, never mind the Catherine's and Elizabeth's.

I haven't found a connection yet. Do you have any further information, such as, where in England? Is your line from the Ledbury, or the Bristol, or perhaps the Hazle? I found the info from familysearch.com to be very minimal, and I have more information than they do and when I get time, I will add to it as I know there is much I can add. There are two other research/msg boards on "Rootsweb.com" and "Ancestry.com". You may have success there. I have two wonderful books on the Elton family. One is on Eltonware Pottery which Edmund Elton started. The other is called "Annals of The Elton Family, Bristol Merchants and Somerset Landowners" by Lady Margaret Elton. This is an invaluable book on the different branches of the Eltons and includes many pictures of our ancestors as well as their houses, Castles and Manors. Hope this helps some. Hope to hear from you soon with more info. I am confident there is a connection.

There are so many duplicate names in the Elton family. I think more than the usual. I was wondering on your Mary Elton and her father, John W. Elton. Do you know if the W in the middle stood for William? Was he born in Eng? Do you have a d.o.b. on him? I'm looking for a connection. Thanks :) Ellen

John William Elton was born in Toronto 9 Jun 1902 to Henry John Elton and Minnie Murphy. He was one of 12 children. Henry was born in Battersea 12 Aug 1868 to Charles Elton and Harriet Bacon. Charles was son of Thomas Elton and Catherine Barlow and was christened 29 Nov 1822. Thomas was an ironmonger in Whitechapel, as it seems his father may have been before him. It seems from the will of an uncle, Edward, that the family may have some roots in Somerset. We think Thomas was born 1781 and that his parnts were Elizabeth and John. We do have some details of other children of Thomas and Catherine.
Pam

Hi Ellen, My ancestor was John Willis Elton b 1807 in Oneida County NY to father Nathan Noah Elton. (He had a son named William though.) My line (perhaps most American Eltons) came from immigrant John born 1653 England, son of Major Richard Elton Bovernor of Hull. There is a very thorough tree at familysearch.com and you might find your people there. If you are successful, I would enjoy hearing back from you, especially if we are distant cousins.

Thank you Ellen. I have the Annals/Elton book too. My ancestor is mentioned on page 7, married to Jane Hall, and I come through their son Ebenezer who married Patience Bradley (Middletown, CT). Therefore my line is Dr Thomas (Ledbury). It's been awhile since I read the pedigree online but I remember that I enjoyed backtracking through Patience Bradley's lines (Bradley, then Griswold, then Dorothy James) using the pedigree. You could probably find the exact one I read, by searching my ancestors name John Elton and birthyear 1807. His wife was Lusina Loomis (hers is also a fun lineage.) If it turns out you are descended from Romeo Elton, I was sent his photograph once and saved it.

Johannes Elton, bio

JOHANNES ELTON
Dieter Township, Roseau Co, MN
page 55-56 Vol 1
Pioneers of Roseau Co, MN 1885-1910

Johannes Elton, his wife Inger and four children: Even, Agnette, John and Ole, came by sailboat to the United States fra Norway in 1882.

On the way across the ocean, they were almost shipwrecked by a severe storm, and the ship was driven back, almost to the coast of Scotland. When the storm was over the ship masts had been destroyed. However, it was also equipped with a steam-powered motor, and was able to continue the journey. According to family records, the Eltons were so afraid of losing their children, that they were tied together with a rope, fastened to one of the parents.

After their arrival in the United States, the Eltons settled first near Portland, North Dakota. While living here four more children were added to the family: Bertha, Signe, Martin and Ida.

After several years of drought and poor crops in North Dakota, the Eltons moved to Pinecreek, an area the oldest son, Even had visited earlier.

Johannes and Inger Elton homesteaded in Dieter Township in 1890. Two daughters: Nellie and Gina were born after the family arrived in Roseau county.

Although Johannes Elton died in 1895, only five years after homesteading, the family continued to live on the homestead for many years.

The children and grandchildren of Johannes and Inger Elton are:
Even Elton
children:
John Elton
Theodore Elton
Ethel Elton (SIMMONS)

Agnette Elton DAVIDSON
children:
John Davidson
Bennett Davidson
Ole Davidson
Edwin Davidson
Ida Davidson (FLATEN)
Mabel Davidson (SKOGSTAD)
Bertha Davidson (BUTLER)
Ethel Davidson (JOHNSON)
Gina Davidson (LANZ)

John Elton
children:
Irene Elton (HANSON)

Ole Elton
no children listed

Martin Elton
children:
Adele Elton (FOLLAND)
Melvin Elton
Aggie Elton (FOSS)
Alpha Elton (TAYLOR)
Oswald Elton
Eddie Elton

Signe Elton KNUTSON

Ida Elton SKOGSTAD
children:
Gladys Skogstad
John Skogstad
Alma Skogstad
Orville Skogstad
Marvin Skogstad
Martha Skogstad

Nellie Elton SOLTAU
children:
Myron Soltau
Viola Soltau
Stanley Soltau
Leonard Soltau
Gerald Soltau
Delores Soltau
Helen Soltau

Gina Elton SOLTAU
children:
Oliver Soltau
Gordon Soltau
James Soltau
Bertha Solatu WILL
Albert Soltau
Sadie Soltau
Eva Soltau
Sidney Soltau

The Eltons were lofelong members of the Lutheran Church

** apologies if any names were spelled incorrectly

Even J. Elton, bio

EVEN J. ELTON
Dieter Township, Roseau Co, MN
page 54 Vol 1
Pioneers of Roseau Co, MN 1885-1910

At the age of seven years, Even J. Elton came fra Norway to the United States with his parents, Johannes Eltons. He firstcame to the Pinecreek area as a very young man. But he did not remain with these very first settlers, but came back later when his parents moved to Pinecreek in 1890. After his father's death in 1895 he supported his mother and the family for a number of years.

Even Elton spent nine years in the woods around Sprague, Manitoba and made the river drive to Winnipeg seven times. He broke the land on the old homestead in Dieter, and the old breaking plow he used some 80 years ago is still to be seen there.

In 1899 when he was 25, he filed on his own homestead, also in Dieter Township. He was married to Mary BESSERUD in 1903. They had two children: John and Ethel. Ethel, and her husband: Eugene G. SIMMONS, live on the old homestead. John Elton had two daughters, Marion (DALKE) and Bonnie (ABRAHAMS).

In his younger days Even Elton was known for his great strength. It is told that when neighborhood men were erecting a building, they were unable to lift and put a heavy log in place. Even and his brother Ole came along, waved the others away and took hold of the log, one on each end and put it in place easily - doing what the other five had been unable to accomplish.

Even was one of the men who helped build the old log church at Pinecreek and again was a member of the crew who built the "new" church there. For many years he served as janitor for the church.

Even passed away in 1953, having spent 54 years on the homestead in Pinecreek.
Dr. J. R. Elton, drug store owner, Vineland, N.J. after Civil War - tidbit

Sharing a found tidbit from a pamphlet in my possession - Early Physicians of Vineland, NJ., pub 1903 by Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society. Not interested in him myself, only have the location in common.
pg 25. "Lemuel H. AIKEN, M.D. from Norfolk, Ct., erected and opened the first drug store. Remained but a few months, selling out his unfinished building to Dr. J. R. ELTON, who completed it and conducted the business successfully for many years."

Vineland, according to the introduction, in 1861 was an almost unbroken tract of wilderness when one "Mr. Charles K. Landis proposed to establish his new colony." It began to attract those from the north seeking a place of milder climate. After the Civil War, it also attracted discharged soldiers seeking employment, new homes and a change of occupation.
No need to contact me. I have no other info on this person and don't desire any. Happy hunting !

It turns out he was Herbert Averill Elton b 1858 S.Kensington, son of Samuel Averill Elton, the artist b 1828 Newnham, Forest of Dean, and Hannah Lane b 1828.
Hannah's parents seem to be Joseph and Sarah Jones m 1815 Deerhurst,Tewkesbury.
Samuel's parents may have been George and Celia Averill, with George son of William and Ann Walding.
Herbert married Aimee Sauzier from Mauritius, whose family originated from Pont St Esprit on the Rhone, France.
Any info/connections to any of these familes would be welcome.
Jeremy

Hello Dee: I was surfing the internet and saw your message about Eltons in Berlin, CT. I am researching Rhesa Elton (1775-1840) who was born in Farmington, CT and died in East Canaan, CT. At the time of his marriage (1807) he was living in "Berlen" CT. Do you have any information on him? I have seen some info on Sylvester Elton (census records, I think).

Dear Ellen McCallum: I am a descendant of Ebenezer Elton III. Our branch of the family lived in Connecticut (l600's-1700's), moved to New York (1800's) and finally to California. We are supposedly related to the Eltons of Clevedon Court in England. I do not know if we are related to your branch of the family. One of our ancestors had 21 children, so it's possible. Do you know of anyone who has information on the New York Eltons?
