Just to let everyone know that dad has passed away. He was born as Franklin Elton, February 15, 1922, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Son of Ellen Roseanne Elton. She married Henry McCallum, a Canadian, and so dad's name changed to Hubert Finley McCallum. Don't know the reason why his first name had changed. He passed away on September 23, 2008, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. Ellen Roseanne Elton McCallum's father was Julia Ann Elton and Abraham Elton.

Did they have a daughter Martha who would have been born in the 1750's?

Their daughter, my grandmother, was born Ellen Roseanna Elton in 1901 d.1936. She was married to Henry Herbert

Johannes Elton, his wife Inger and four children: Even, Agnette, John and Ole, came by sailboat to the United States fra Norway in 1882.

On the way across the ocean, they were almost shipwrecked by a severe storm, and the ship was driven back, almost to the coast of Scotland. When the storm was over the ship masts had been destroyed. However, it was also equipped with a steam-powered motor, and was able to continue the journey. According to family records, the Eltons were so afraid of losing their children, that they were tied together with a rope, fastened to one of the parents.

After their arrival in the United States, the Eltons settled first near Portland, North Dakota. While living here four more children were added to the family: Bertha, Signe, Martin and Ida.

After several years of drought and poor crops in North Dakota, the Eltons moved to Pinecreek, an area the oldest son, Even had visited earlier.

Johannes and Inger Elton homesteaded in Dieter Township in 1890. Two daughters: Nellie and Gina were born after the family arrived in Roseau county.

Although Johannes Elton died in 1895, only five years after homesteading, the family continued to live on the homestead for many years.

At the age of seven years, Even J. Elton came fra Norway to the United States with his parents, Johannes Eltons. He firstcame to the Pinecreek area as a very young man. But he did not remain with these very first settlers, but came back later when his parents moved to Pinecreek in 1890. After his father's death in 1895 he supported his mother and the family for a number of years.

Even Elton spent nine years in the woods around Sprague, Manitoba and made the river drive to Winnipeg seven times. He broke the land on the old homestead in Dieter, and the old breaking plow he used some 80 years ago is still to be seen there.

In 1899 when he was 25, he filed on his own homestead, also in Dieter Township. He was married to Mary BESSERUD in 1903. They had two children: John and Ethel. Ethel, and her husband: Eugene G. SIMMONS, live on the old homestead. John Elton had two daughters, Marion (DALKE) and Bonnie (ABRAHAMS).

In his younger days Even Elton was known for his great strength. It is told that when neighborhood men were erecting a building, they were unable to lift and put a heavy log in place. Even and his brother Ole came along, waved the others away and took hold of the log, one on each end and put it in place easily - doing what the other five had been unable to accomplish.

Even was one of the men who helped build the old log church at Pinecreek and again was a member of the crew who built the "new" church there. For many years he served as janitor for the church.

Even passed away in 1953, having spent 54 years on the homestead in Pinecreek.

I am looking for any clues regarding my great grandfather who was a Major in the British army during the Boer War, where he served under the Duke of Connaught, and married Aimee Sauzier in Mauritius in about 1889 (he was a consular official there), He was brother or nephew to Samuel Elton of Darlington, England who was the first head of the Darlington School of Art.

Sharing a found tidbit from a pamphlet in my possession - Early Physicians of Vineland, NJ., pub 1903 by Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society. Not interested in him myself, only have the location in common.
pg 25. "Lemuel H. AIKEN, M.D. from Norfolk, Ct., erected and opened the first drug store. Remained but a few months, selling out his unfinished building to Dr. J. R. ELTON, who completed it and conducted the business successfully for many years."

Vineland, according to the introduction, in 1861 was an almost unbroken tract of wilderness when one "Mr. Charles K. Landis proposed to establish his new colony." It began to attract those from the north seeking a place of milder climate. After the Civil War, it also attracted discharged soldiers seeking employment, new homes and a change of occupation.

Sarah Laura Elton was my great-grandmother. She was born to Frank Joseph Elton and Minnie Adhemar, 27 Mar 1889, in Canterbury, Litchfield, CT. She was married to Charles August Gregory on 4 Jan 1905. They had 3 children, including my grandmother, Mildred Gregory. Sarah died on 30 Jul 1966 and is buried at Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill, CT. I was wondering if anyone has info about the Elton family. I know that my ancestry goes back to England through this line. I also have other lines....Foote, Stow, Churchill...among others who came to CT from England.

Faye Edna ELTON was born in Fillmore Co., Nebraska, November 8, 1889 and departed this life April 7, 1926 at Lincoln Sanitarium, Lincoln, Nebraska, age 36 years, 4 months and 29 days.
She was united in marriage to Robert NUNNS, March 18, 1909, at Kingfisher, Okla. To this union there were born seven children, three sons and four daughters. She leaves to mourn her untimely departure her husband, Robert NUNNS, her children Francis, Robert, Richard, Ruth, Roine, Lucy and baby Doris all of Geneva; also her father and mother Mr. and Mrs. J. Y. ELTON, a sister Mrs. GROESBECK, a brother Enos, of Afton, Iowa, a half sister Mrs. Ed MURRAY fo Delta, Ohio, and a host of friends.
February 1911 she accepted Christ as her personal saviour and constant companion, who gently called her to her eternal home at the end of her five weeks of patient suffering.
Mrs. Nunns was a loving wife and dutiful mother and even unto the very end her constant thought was of her loved ones. Her cheery and sunny disposition made lifelong friends of all her acquantance who, with the family, mourn their great loss.

MRS. SADIE SICKLER ELTON

Sadie Belle SICKLER, second child of Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Sickler, was born October 21, 1868, in Illinois. She moved to Iowa at the age of three with her parents, sister and borther and she spent most of her girlhood days near Glenwood.
In February, 1888, she was united in marriage to John YOUNG ELTON. To this union were born four children two of whom survive. They are Mrs. A. H. GROESBECK of Afton, Ia., and Leo Enos ELTON of Chicago, Ill. One child passed away in infancy. A daughter, Mrs. Roibert NUNNS, passed away in 1926 at Geneva, Neb., leaving an infant daughter, who made her home with the Eltons.
The Elton family made their home on a farm near Geneva, Neb., until their retirement in 1923, at which time they moved to Afton, Ia., where they spent the rremainder of their lives. Mr. Elton preceded his wife in death June 28, 1942.
Mrs. Elton passed away May 10, 1944, at the age of 75 years, 6 months and 18 days. She leaves to mourn her departure two children, Leo Elton and Mrs. A. H. Groesback, eleven grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren and a host of friends.
In her girlhood Mrs. Elton united with and was baptized in the Christian church, where she was a loyal and active worker, always devoting herself to the welfare of others. Her life was one of self-sacrifice and her cheerfulness was an inspiration to those around her.
Funeral services were held at Afton, Ia., May 12 and interment was in the Afton Cemetery.

Robert NUNNS, Sr., Francis and Richard of Chelsea township and Lucille of Hastings went to Afton, Ia., Saturday evening to attend the funeral service at 2:30 Monday afternoon at the Methodist church of John ELTON, father-in-law of Robert NUNNS, Sr. Mr. ELTON passed away suddenly Saturday morning. Burial was in theAfton cemetery. Mr. ELTON, who was eighty-five years old, left Chelsea township in 1923.

Noticed that most of the listers are from the English ancestry side and wondered whether there are any Norwegian Elton (Eltun) listers.

My ggrandfather Andrew Elton and his wife Anna, emigrated from Vang, Valdres Norway to America in 1877 eventually settling in McHenry County ND. Family also used the variation Eltun (Trond Eltun, MN; Dr. Trond Eltun, Velva ND, John Eltun, Northfield MN). All children of Andrew and Anna remained in the US except their son Henry would emigrated to Sask. Canada about 1907. I am from Henry's line.

Info on Charles ELTON born <1846> Eng Sommerset. Wife Mary SHORT <1847>. Children were John, Morgan, Joseph, Elijah, Hanna, Eva. Miners and Masons. Most of the family came to US in 1892. Jospeh returned to Eng and ran a shop in Ebbw Vale, his family ended up in Canada.

I am desperately trying to find a clue on the family (Elton) prior to the Edgar Haines Elton move to Missouri. There was some kind of "family fued" that occured and the last person who knew of it passed away a while ago. I believe this fued has added to our inability to find the family line from OHIO. Edgar Haines Elton married Margaret Limle (Limley, Lindley, Lindly,etc). We do have a letter written from Margarets mother to Edgar and Margaret- there was obviously some tension there. I am researching the genealogy of Herefordshire, England. As a result of this study I have come across a book which may interest anyone looking for info on the Mayo and Elton family. The book is titled "A Genealogical Account of the Mayo and Elton Families of the counties of Wilts and Hereford" by Charles Herbert Mayo and Theodore Mayo. Published in 1882. This book can be found in Hereford City Library, local reference section. Though I at present have it out on loan!

It traces the Elton and Mayo families back to the 16th Century with references to earlier ancestors. The book is divided up into sections on prominent members of the families, for example

Elton of Hazle, which is in Ledbury, Herefordshire. This section describes the Elton family in the late 16th century and how they are related to the Hall, Watts and Pritchard Families and an account of the Elton Foundation at Brasenose College, Oxford.

Thomas Mayo of Bodenham and Hope under Dinmore, Herefordshire, and the parish of St Peter in the City of Hereford. This story starts in the late 16th century.

Chapter 4 is about John Mayo of Devizes, eldest son of John Mayo, Vicar of Avebury. John, junior married Katherine Hayes in 1671 and had a large family

Next a section on Charles Mayo of Hereford baptised 1685 and so on and so forth. The book is 174 pages and is packed with stories and facts, births death and marriages etc. At the back of the book is a very large family tree with several hundred names.

I am decended from Thomas Eston b.1613 at Shobrooke, Devon, and his son Nathaniell Elston b. 1638 at Morchard Bishop, Devon. There are many references to Eastons, Estons and Elstons at this location and time - obviously phonetic spelling, transpelling and misspelling of names occurs frequently in these ancient records. Does anyone on this message board have any information on these names, and of course, Elton, in this area, at that time or earlier? Morchard Bishop is located about 14 miles from Exeter, and Shobrooke is on the road that ran between them.

Hon. James Samuel Elton of Waterbury was born in that city November 7, 1838, and received an academic education, including a two years’ course at General Russell’s Military School at New Haven. He is a prominent business man at Waterbury, and is a director of a number of the leading manufacturing concerns there, including the American Pin Company, the Coe Brass Manufacturing Company, the Waterbury Brass Company, of which he is at present the president, and also in the Wheeler & Wilson Manufacturing Company. He was formerly a director in the Holmes, Booth & Hayden Company, and president of the American Pin Company. He is also a director in the Waterbury National Bank, and was an active associate in the Elton Banking Company, while it was engaged in business. Senator Elton has not before been a member of the Legislature, but in consequence of his large and important business experience has been able to render most valuable service during the session. He was elected by the Republicans of the Fifth District.

Ellen Elton married my grandfather, John ASHBURN Dec. 1972 in Ashton-Under-Lyne. I found them on the 1891 census showing the 7 children, they were both 43 yrs. so birth dates should be 1847-48. Ellen died in 1918, no info on where buried. Of the 7 children, one son, John went to Australia, daug. Alice married and went to S. Africa to help build railroads. Daugs. Jane Marie and Nellie came to USA, my father also came to USA bur returned to UK to serve in the British army world war 1. After returned USA and married my mother Alda E. Milner in 1922. My Grandfather moved to the Wirral in the 30's and taught English at Wirral Grammar School. His son (my father), Michael Elton settled in the area after his fathers death in 1970 and I was born (Michael Elton Jnr) in the same year. My father was a Merchant Seaman, and I followed in his footsteps, albeit in the Royal Navy. I have one brother, and now live in Saltash, Cornwall.

Came across this site so I thought I'd throw my hat in the Elton ring. My grandfather (Edwin J. Elton III) did lots of research on the family name. If I recall correctly we came over from the Cornwall, England area in the mid 1800's and settled in Wisconsin. My father (Edwin J. Elton IV) was born there and eventually moved to New York/New Jersey area in the sixties. I have a brother (John Paul), and two sisters (Annette and Kathryn).
