I'm looking for the parents of Maria Elwyn b. 1842 in Woodstock, NY. She married Benjamin Soper and they lived in Woodstock before relocating to the Town of Esopus in the late 1800's. Any information would be appreciated.

Darrel has some correct information. There ultimately were three branches of the Elwyn family: one in WoodDalling, one in Thurning, and one in Heigham.

According to the 'Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica and the British Archivist, v. VI, Fifth series, p. 17-32' John Elwyn of WoodDalling, County Norfolk, born about 1450 married Catherine ?, their son Peter Elwyn born about 1480, died 1557 married Lucy ? who died before 1556. Peter's son John graduated from Cambridge University in England 1521-1522. He died about 1569. John's son was, William Elwyn, Sr. , no wife's name, probably died in 1556, his son William Elwyn,Jr of Heigham, who died in 1610-11, was married to an Alice who died in 1602/3. His son Thomas Elwyn, bapt. 1 May 1566 (Old Heigham (St. Bartholomew) Parish Register), died 7 Oct 1603. Thomas married Elizaabeth Benslye or Bencley in 24 Sep 1591 in Heigham. Elizabeth was buried 12 Jan 1605/6. Thomas's tomb was in the Heigham Church, but it was destroyed by the Germans during a bombing in 1942. Thomas had two more children by a second wife, Dorothy ?, named Mary, bapt. 1611, and John, bapt. 1612. their daughter Sarah married Michael Metcalf, Dornix Weaver of Norwich and they emigrated to Dedham, Massachusetts (Norfolk County) in 1637. Sarah died 30 Nov 1644 in Dedham, Massachusetts according to the First Church Records, Dedham, Massachusetts. Michael Metcalf and his wife and eight children: Michael, Thomas, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Martha, Joane and Rebecca left on the 'John and Dorothy' of Ipswich, but were returned to England and then left on the 'Rose' of Yarmouth for New England.

If you would like me to send you the photocopies of these pages, I'll be happy to do so. Please let me know. My husband is descended from Sarah who married Michael Metcalf.

Hi... There was also a Catharine Shultis among my woodstock ancestors. I don't think it can be the same one that you are looking for, but probably a relative. I believe that Catherine Shultis was her maiden name and that she was born about 1798 and married Peter P. Short in Woodstock about 1833

Elizibeth.. I am interested in how we may be related...Anyway about Clara A Shultis. Clara was my Great Grandmother's Niece. My Great Grandmother, Mahala (Shultis) Elwyn. Clara b.1887 d.1943. Her parents: Vactor Shultis b.1852 d1910 and Maria Risley. Vactors Parents: George Hiram Shultis b. 1822 d. 1899 and Margaret Reynolds b.1823 d 1900. Parents of George Hiram Shultis: Henry P. Shultis b.1791 d.1883 and Rachel Shultis b. 1790 d. 1863 (cousins I guess). Henry P. was a Livingston Land Agent and early founder of Bearsville/Woodstock. Well documented in Histories of Woodstock and Ulster county by Evers and others. Very rich history along with Lashers and Elwyns developing the Woodstock valley when it was owned by landed gentry prior to Down Rent wars etc. I have more on all sides. Look forward to hearing from you.

Yes, Clara A. Shultis was married to Bruce Cunningham. I have no other information on them, however. Sorry. I would say they were in the New York area but not positive.

Hi Jon,

Yes,I do use the FTM Version 8.0. I will certainly appreciate receiving the family tree. Do you have relatives in Woodstock, NY? My husband always thought he was of German descent but it looks like the line we are tracing is English. His grandmother was Holland Dutch. What is your thought?

Betty

Alexander and Melissa Bundy had Larry...my Great grandfaher. John M. was one of 4 I think and Alexander had several bros. and sisters. Your Charles may be in their somewhere. It is almost certain that we are related because there are simply not that many Elwyns....fun stuff.

Re: Robert Elwyn

Robert Elwyn was my fathers first cousin. Unfortunatly, I never met Robert, but I do have a fair amount of information about him. As you probably know, he was born in Woodstock, NY and "built" the Woodstock Playhouse...A well known summer stock theatre. The original building, unfortunatly burned several years ago. His story is linked to the early days of Woodstock as an art colony and the development of the performing arts there, Byrdcliffe, the Maverick a and through extension to the Woodstock Festival in '69. Love to explore this with you further as I am the Elwyn "family historian". Send an E Mail and I will give you some references to start your search. I have some original Playbills from the theatre an I think Robert is both Producer and Director... My "great aunt" has pictures etc.
