This was written by Charley Pennington's daughter: Charley did Remember that his mother was indian and that his father encountered trouble over Charley's mother and an Indian man. Authorities took Charley and his two brothers, Doc and Olly, and offered them for adoption. He remembers a doctor took one of the boys. He never could remember who adopted the other. A preacher named Charley Ely and his family were passing through Missouri from the West at this time. They adopted Charley, who was seven years old at the time. Charley told of the couple giving him a pair of red boots to not cry about leaving his home. They made the trip in a covered wagon. He remembers crossing the Mississippi River on a ferry boat. His adopted mother, Mrs Ely, became very sick on the boat. I remember him telling that he thought she was going die, and that he would be without a mother again The Elys settled in Jonesville, Virginia. The Elys always taught Charley who he was and never tried to give him their name. But some people in Virginia always called Charley by the name of Ely. " end letter

If anyone knows any information on this ELY family that could help me, please email at Red12767@aol.com. Thanks!
