We're second cousins once removed; I spoke by telephone with Josie's youngest daughter four years ago. I'd like to exchange some info on living relatives, but so far I've been unable to activate the "contact" or "messages" feature on this site. I've set my own Community Preferences to "Display my email address to other members." Perhaps you can send me a message.

Cindy, George B. Ely was my Great-Grandfather, through his daughter Leta Belle (Ely) Baten. Are you one of Eugenia Ellen's great-granddaughters? I've corresponded with some of her grandchildren, as well as with the late Silas Ely, who posted several entries on this thread.

The rest of my family pioneered on out to Nebraska.
Have you any info on Silas Swarts...looks like he married a LOT.

Cherilyn

Tim K, I think we're related. Also lookig for Ely info. My G Grandfather was John Jacob[Jake] Kelley, son of William and Elizabeth Ely Kelley. I believe her father was a William Ely. My info has 1844 as Elizabeths b-year. Jake born 1867. Elizabeth died 1905 if my info is correct. What I could find leads back to a George Ely as father of Caleb, from N.J.,lived in Susquehanna valley,Pa. after Revolutionary war. George was a Colonel in N.J. militia, was at battle of Monmouth. George had a trading post near what is now Paxinos,Pa., near Sunbury.

Unfortunately, not much is ever written about daughters.
I am interested in Mary's brother, Richard, who also gets a passing mention in the above book. He ended up in Wayne Co. NY. Richard Ely's son, Henry Ely, m. Nancy Carothers of WAyne Co. NY., also in my line.

Dear Paul Mcleod,

I am curious as to your connection to Dinsmore Ely?

I guess you know that Dr. James O. Ely published the letters written by Dinsmore from the front in France during WW1.

Dinsmore Ely, "One Who Served" A.C.McLurg & Co Chicago 1919.

It is hardback with a tan cover, gold cover lettering in fair condition with a few stains on the cover.
The interior of the book is in good condition. In the front of the book is a foreword [The prelude] by Dr. James O.Ely with a photograph of Dinsmore in uniform of the flying corps.
At the back of the book is the very good photo of the memorial taken before 1919.
"It is an investment not a loss when a man dies for his country"

If you know anybody that has a proper interest in this publication please reply to the poster of this message.
R.T.
Because of this it is pretty safe to assume that they all at some point before their travels carried the same surname. And no one by the name Oellen can be found in Pa. subsequent to these arrivals. They are variously called Ely or Eilor.

I am searching for Henry Ely, listed in Bern Co., Pa. on a tax list as a turner, meaning he made furniture and had a lathe.
He married Christena Caterina Ketner in abt 1776 Christ Little Trinity Church at Tulpehocken. They left Pa. probably after the death of her parents and went to Va. and subsequently to Tn.
Needing to find a christening or baptismal record giving the names of his parents.

Lynn. Great to find another cousin. I don't know if what is presented in the book would count as real documentation. It just mentions the marriage date in the paragraph. I will try to attach the three pages which cover Thomas Ely and Sarah Lowther. Hope I do this right. Never attached anything to the boards before. If you want anything else from book I will be happy to send you a scan of the pages. Just email me at saramac@windstream.net and let me know your email address.

I think maybe the date you have was going by the pre-1752 dating for Quaker records. The old style, January was the 11th month. Since they were married in 1734, I believe the date in the book would be wrong. I will make a notation of that in the notes for Thomas. I only just recently obtained a copy of the book and have a long way to go in entering it into FTM. Next week I get to meet another cousin in person. He is a half first cousin and 88 years old. Hope this isn't too many attachments.

I am also descended from Thomas Ely, eldest son of Hugh and Mary (Hewson), born at Trenton about the year 1713. On January 22, 1734 he married Sarah Lowther, dauther of William and Martha Lowther who had come from Ireland and settled on a farm in Upper Buckingham. Their dau. Sarah Ely, born 1736 married, 1758, Benjamin Warner. Sarah Ely and Benjamin Warner are my 5th great grandparents.

According to the book, "An Historical Narrative of the Ely, Revell and Stacye Families",Thomas had a brother, Hugh Ely, Jr. and two sisters, Ann and Anna.

Would enjoy hearing from anyone connected to Thomas Ely and Sarah Lowther. Deer Creek Friends Meetinghouse Route 161.

... To the north of the building is a small cemetery; the oldest marker is a slate stone inscribed "Sarah Ely 1775".

I stopped my line in the last email after it left the Ely name. Lenora and Warren are my great-grandparents.

Darlington is in Harford County, Maryland. I lived in Harford county for some time, and now live about two hours away. I get back there from time to time though, and hope to do some personal photography of the area. What I have of Sarah's is a jpg file that I will be happy to send.

I cannot put my finger on the source, but there is a history that I have of Harford County, which states Sarah's tombstone is one of the oldest still visible at the Deer Creek Friends Meeting House. That property can be found if heading on US 1 from Bel Air, MD, just prior to crossing the Susquehanna River. Darlington is the area surrounding that location. There is a larger cemetery a couple of miles south where later generations are buried.

Anyone may feel free to contact me at MikeMonteith@comcast.net.

Another side of the family checking in here. I am descended from Thomas & Sarah through their son Joseph. The date of death that I have for Joseph is 20 Aug 1819, but I have not found a date of death for Thomas. Did he really live to 105 years of age? A fellow descendent sent a photo of the tombstone for Sarah Lowther, but could not find one for Thomas. I will be happy to send to those interested.

My ancestry is:

(1) Thomas and Sarah (Lowther) Ely
(2) - Joseph and Ann (Jones) Ely
(3) - Thomas and Sarah (Forsythe) Ely
(4) - William T. and Lavinia (?) Ely
(5) - Amos Roger Ely and H. Loberta (Jones) Ely
(6) - Lenora Clarence Ely and Warren N. Bowman

Many of these descendants stayed in the Darlington area, and I can provide a lot of info from Thomas and Sarah Forsythe Ely on down.

Mike Monteith
MikeMonteith@comcast.net

Hi I have questions about your family member John W. Pratt I found him and his wife Sarah on the 1870 census alone with my paternal ggrandfather Joseph Adkins and his 1st wife. by any chance do u know if your family was related to any Adkins-Atkins My ggrandmother was white but he married my ggrandmother whom was a mixture of Indian and black. so they called them Mulatto race. if u have any access to the census please take a look at those records and let me know if he was living on the plantation with your family or family memeber. some records says he was Mulatto race but My mom said my grandpa was mixed his father was white. I do have a few records that listed him as white but he married outside the race and lived with most Mulatto and colored people so thats tricky. anyway take a look at the 1870 census Union Co. El dorado Twnshp,Ar. and you'll find John W. Pratt his wife Sarah C. Pratt my ggrandfather Joseph Adkins and Victoria Adkins and 3 of there children listed. Andrew Adkins,Fanney Adkins and John Adkins. my personal email address is joannatkins@hotmail.com oh, by the 1880 he was married to my ggrandmother Her name was Anna Hearin or Herring she also went by Annie. her and Joe married in early 1880. they had 16 children my paternal grandfather was there youngest child. he was born in 1905 in Ar. the last name changed from Adkins in 1870 to Atkins in 1880. so all the Atkins children he birth with my ggrandmother last name was spelled Atkins. and not Adkins

Mike,
If Lenora Ely & Warren Bowman are your parents, then you and I are 5th cousins twice removed, a.k.a. 7th cousins. That's pretty cool.

I looked at my FTM record and laughed at myself for not noticing that I too have Thomas Ely's dates showing he lived to 105 years, 1714-1819. That sounds fantastical.

I would love to have a copy of Sarah Lowther's tombstone and to know it's location. Please write me at medmud@yahoo.com. I'll reimburse any expense for sending it.

Also, What state is Darlington in?

My ancestor, Rachel Ely (dau. of Mahlon Ely & Mary Litten)moved to Huntingdon, Pa. Even thought the Ely surname in my direct line ended with Rachel, it remained the middle name of her daughter and granddaughter, Hannah Ely Garretson and Harriet Ely Miller, who are my direct ancestors.

Lynn
Bertha,

Thank you for the details about Hugh and Mary Hewson Ely.

I'm a descendant of Thomas > Mahlon > Rachel (1792-1880), who was my last ancestor with the Ely surname.

It's very lucky to be able to have so much information on this line.

Lynn

I'm also a descendant of Thomas Ely's son Mahlon and would love to document additional siblings.

The data I have for Thomas(which you may have received in the last 5 1/2 year) are that he was born 20 Jan 1714 in Trenton, NJ, and died in 1819 in Darlington, MD.

I would love to compare notes.

Lynn

Sarah, You and I are 7th cousins. Mahlon Ely (brother to your ancestor Sarah Ely) and his wife Mary Litten are my 5th great-grandparents as well.

Interesting that the generations are parallel despite the fact that Sarah Ey (b. 1736) was 18 years older than her brother Mahlon Ely (b. 1754).

Was Thomas Sarah Lowther Ely's marriage documented in "Historical Narrative"? I ask because I have recorded a wedding date of 22 November instead of January (someone either missed a 1 or added 1).
Lynn
