Lyle Fern Elzea (b.abt 1886), married Everett Church, lived Indianapolis

I have an original 11” x 13” family photograph of Lyla Elzea Church and “the George Church Family”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in about 1915, in the yard, outside a home, and is identified as being taken in Ft. Wayne, IN.

In the photo are: “Parents, George and Annie; son Everett Franklin Church, and wife Lyla Fern Elzea Church, with daughter Frances Elzea Church”. Also “daughter Edith Church Clark, husband Fred Clark and daughters Verl, Berniece and Annie Jane”. Also “daughter Ruth and William Paul Church, unmarried”.

I found George and Annie in the 1900 census for Salt Creek (Jackson Co.) IN. George (Jan 1859 in NC) was a minister, age 41. Annie (Sep 1853 IN), age 36. Children Everett (Aug 1881), Edith (Oct 1884), Ruth (March 1893) and Paul (May 1897). In 1930, George (71) and Annie (67) were in Indianapolis and he was minister of the Nazarene Church. IN 1910, I found Ruth living with her sister Edith & Fred ClarkE in Indianapolis. In 1920, Everett, Leila and Frances lived in Indianapolis with his mother in law Priscilla Elzea. The Ft. Wayne connection comes from Fred & Edith Clark with their 3 girls who lived in Ft. Wayne in 1920.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to this Church family or Lyla Elzea Church.

Sorry, I do not know the meaning of the name Elzea. We have tried to find out but it still remains a mystery. We pronounce it (LZ). I wish I had more info for you but we seem to have hit a blank wall ourselves. I have a picture of him that was taken when he was 80 years old. If you are interested let me know.

Alicia Elzea

My great great grandfather was Thomas Elzie Owens. He was born in England in 1786 and was a British soldier who was sent to the states to fight in the war of 1812. Some of his brothers had already immigrated to America, so not wanting to fight against them he deserted the British Army and joined the American Army. To avoid future problems (like being shot as a deserter) he dropped his last name (Owens), and changed his middle name (Elzie) to Elzea and used it for his last name. He married and had at least 3 sons and 1 daughter. His wife's name or identy is not known to us nor are any facts concerning his prior life in England. We have for his children a daughter Cynthia Elzea, and 3 sons, Sylvester, Filo and Hollis Elzea. Hollis was my great grandfather. We think there was another child but we don't have a name for him or her.
I hope this has been of some help. Let me know if I can be of further assistance

Born: 2 Sep 1786 in England.
Died: 4 Jul 1866 in Connecticut
Children: Cynthia, Sylvester, Filo, Hollis, and Elizabeth. Thomas was apparently married twice. His secong wife was Elizabeth Hasbrouck, the mother of Elizabeth Elzea. I am looking for Thomas's first wife who is the mother of my great grandfather, Hollis Elzea. I am also looking for information concerning Thomas Elzea before he came to the USA. He came from England in 1812. We have no information prior to that whatsoever, and world appreciate any help.
