I was so excited when I found your name again on this site! I wasn't able to e mail you from the other address. My husband is not the Craig you were replying to but his name is also Craig. We would like to find out more information about his grandmother's side of the family. His father's name was Gerald Fulwider, Gerald's mother's maiden name was Eva Emahizer. Her father's name was Wesley E. Emahizer and his father's name was Samuel C. I particularily interested in finding information on Eva's brother Arthur J. Emahizer. He had a small traveling circus and used to wrestle at county fairs. He was quite a character. If you have any additional information, I'm hoping you can share where you found it. We also know that Art was married a time or two and one of his wives drowned. We don't know the names of these wives.
Thank you,
Katie in Brewster, ks

This is so exciting. Where are you from?

Actually, my husband is the one who is related to the Emahisers. His grandmother was Eva who married Lemly Curtis Fulwider, Sr. I didn't know that Wesley had 3 other siblings and that he was an orphan. I'd like to know more about that. I also want to know how and what brought Wesley to this area? Do you know? And did the other siblings come with him? Wesley E. and Lillian (wife) are buried in the Brewster Cemetery. I have his birthdate at 2/17/1853. He died here on 1/25/1941. It's my understanding that there was a Mary (sister) Emahiser that died. When and how old, I don't know.

Did you know that Art had a small traveling circus? We have photographs of him with his animal act of dog and pony shows as well as with a bear. He seems to have been a very colorful character.

Our little library/historical society has information on the Emahisers that I have copied off. The librarian is a great resource for Brewster history. We also have photographs of Berte, Arthur and Eva but none of Mary.

I have talked with Thane a little bit. I would like to ask him if he wouldn't mind sharing what he has. It would be nice to have a written history. I guess I don't even know how he is related, except for the last name.

I have made the mistake of researching the Emahisers and Fulwiders at the same time. So forgive me if I get things a little mixed up and feel free to set me straight.

I would love to share information with you. I have to do most of my research in the summer. After school starts things get too busy to devote much time to it.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Katie
Did you get my e-mail? Sometimes it doesn't work too well.

I may have found what happened to Mary. The Oberlin Herald has a listing from 7/11/1895 for burial of child of Wesley. The years would fit between Berte and Art. As far as I know, Mary is the only child they lost.

Berte kept a diary from the 1930's until the late 50's or early 60's. I made a list of Art's whereabouts from the diaries.

In 1940, Art had a seeing eye dog and a house in Caney
In 1941 when Wesley died, Art was in Brewster
In 1943 when Lillian died art was still in Brewster
In 1949, Art sent Berte a clipping about himself and his blindness "progressive atrophy"
In 1951 Art sent Berte a clipping from the Eagle about a housefire where a child died and Art was burned.
1952 found Art at the Ks School for the Blind in Kansas City and then did demos for the blind
In 1953 Art's address was c/o a publisher in Cincinnatti
In 1954, he was in Bossier City, LA
In 1955, Art was back in Wichita
In 1956, Art was in Phoenix and in Wichita at the VA hospital then in Memphis This is the final entry in the diary
Art died 3/30/1959 at the VA hospital in Denver.

Art was drafted for WWI and was in Oberlin.

From what I have heard, Art was always a rolling stone and a showman. I'm not sure what time period the circus came into being. I know he did not enjoy working for Berte when he homesteaded in Colorado and disappeared for a year and joined a circus. That was probably his first taste of the animal trainer life. He seemed to reappear in Brewster or Oberlin on a fairly regular basis.

Katie: We are related. Eva's brother Berte was my grandfather. I am also researching Uncle Art, on and off. I'm sure you know that he is buried at Ft Leavenworth Ntnl cemetery after dying of pancreatic cancer at the VA hospital in Denver.

I only work on the family tree in the winter when I can't work in my garden.

My primary interest is finding out how the four orphans survived after their mother died. I'm thinking Wesley was about 12. Their father died prior to the 1860 census.

Thaine apparently has a file of Art's papers but he is practically blind. It might be worth a phone call anyway. He lives in Oberlin.

We need to compare notes some time.
We are researching all spellings of the Emehizer, Emahiser and so forth. We have Dexter Ashley Emahiser listed in our files. We show Dexter being born April 19, 1901 died Oct. 29, 1983 in Taylor, Wayne Co., MI. He was married to Alice Marie Van
Dembussache August 1925. Dexter's parents were Clifton Burr Emahiser and Charity Ellen McMasters. If this is your line of the family would you be able to fill in the descendants of Dexter Charity for us. We are interested in learning the wives maiden names also along with dates of birth, death and marriages. We have a rather large file on the all spellings of the family and are willing to share the information. Please contact us at: sewe@penn.com
Thank you.

The Emahisers

My Grandfather was Dexter Ashley Emahiser, born in 1901 and died in 1983. He was one of 13 brothers and sisters from the northern Ohio area. He married Alice Vanden Bushe in 1923. Children are Robert Neal (deceased) and Maxine (Price). Grandchildren include Constance Diane Price/Reeb, Mark Douglas (deceased 1970) and Joan Alison Emahiser. From what I remember the large farm near Macomb was lost in the great depression.

Great Grandma Emahiser's maiden name was McMaster, if that helps. I remember Dad saying that she had a passion for choclate covered cherries.

Charles Emahiser (Uncle Charley) was one of Grandpa's younger brothers.

There is a book that was being researched and published by one of the aunts, but I can't remember which one. I'll check with Aunt Maxine and see if she remembers.

Hope this information helps.

Joanie

We have been in contact with your brother Craig I believe but have not been able to link your branch of the Emahiser to the family. We need to know your Great Grandfather's name.
Emahiser's

Well as you can see I am an Emahiser. I currently live in Waterville Ohio, but spent most of my life in Toledo Ohio. I was born in Toledo in 1944. I have three sons and a daughter: Robert Thomas 32, Donald Craig 30, Jenifer Dee 21 and Matthew Joseph 3.

My fathers name was Donald Leroy Emahiser - was born in Toledo, Oh July 21,1922 and died in August of 1988.

My Grandfather was Emmett Leroy Emahiser. Gramps died in 1972 I believe he was born in 1889 but I am not positive. Will have top look it up later. I am not sure where he was born but I do know that he spent most of his youth in a small towm called Malinta, Ohio. There still are quite a few Emahiser's in the Malinta - Napoleon Ohio area.

I have two brothers: Craig V. 50 years old and Kevin Donald 38 years old. Both are living within a few miles of me.

My grandfather came from a pretty good size family so I understand but that's about all I know. I have met a couple of his brothers and sisters over the years but it was a long time ago and I don't recall their names right now. We had a few reunions early in my
adult life - but that was at least 30 years ago and unfortunately I don't remember too many people.

I have met a cousin named Jim Emahiser who is my age and lived in Toledo. I know of an Uncle Clyde Emahiser. That's about all at the moment - maybe more as I go on.

Hope this helps us. Would like to find out when and how the Emahisers got to this country. As I recall my Grandfather did say (or I think he did) that his father or grandfather came from Germany.

Well all we need to do is fill in the blanks

Tom Emahiser
