Ivy does have Joyce and Judy,Jeanie & John. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
I did meet Marjorie, Leslies last wife. She stayed with us for my brother's wedding. She was a delightful woman. She passed from cancer over 10 years agao. I know that my mother has information that one of the brothers traced the line back to Cleopatra and somehow we are related to Thomas Paine. I will gather some details and respond when I am able.

Leslie Emary was a brother of my grandfather, Charles Henry Emary. I've discovered quite a bit about Leslie, that he had four wives, Lily Gower, Luella Cotton, Caroline (I have her maiden name written down somewhere, but it escapes me for the moment) and Marjorie ? who was 35 years his junior!! He emigrated to Canada first, I think it was about 1911 but not sure and he then entered US in 1914 and married Lily about 1916? Lily was from Mersham Kent and I wondered if her father had known Leslie before the Gowers emigrated.
Leslie came back to the UK many times for visits. I read a newspaper article that he and Luella were honeymooning in England, I've seen him on the passenger lists of arrivals to the UK.
I found his death when I first started doing my tree and ordered the cert and was surprised that he was living a couple of hours drive away from us. We never knew anything about my grandfather's siblings or him for that matter. I've been in touch with a grandson of Leslie's brother John Woolley Emary and he told me quite a bit about a family rift that happened. My grandfather seems to be the cause of it, so anything you have would be a blessing.
Did Florence have two girls, Joy and Patricia and did Ivy have a daughter Joyce? This is what I've got written down. I've just seen on my notes that Leslie's third wife was Caroline Aspeden and she was born in 1888 Denby, Yorkshire UK. Don't know when she went to America.
Hope to hear from you soon, regards Maureen Jurado

I am a great grandaughter of Leslie Emary. He had two daughters Florence and Ivy. Both are still alive(in their nineties) and in good health. I never met my great grandfather but we corresponded for several years. He was a poet, composer and an artist. He was also very humble so would probably not own up to it. I would be interested in sharing information with anyone and may be able to answer questions as my grandmother's memory is very sharp.

Hello, I have been in contact with some family members who have a little more info on Andrew's death, a sad story really. I have a photo copy of the inquest a memorial card with grave number. I've been meaning to go to Kent and see for myself but time is always an issue. We have also asked the question if he was adopted but as it mentions this in the inquest we assume it to be true. He was nicknamed 'Pinker' as he was pinker than his twin. You can contact me through email if you'd like and I can sort out the bits to send to you. Regards Mo
jurado91@hotmail.com

My great-uncle Andrew Bridges Overton was the adopted son in your post.he was one of twins and having searched the 1911 census I found that he was with your descendants at the age of 3. His mother died soon after childbirth.
I have since confirmed the death as reported by you in 1926 and applying for his death certificate so there may be some more info on there.
I would be interested in whatever other info you have on him,and more importnatly the other twin Alfred Bridges OVERTON.
My thinking is that if he was also adopted by the time the census occurred he had been absorbed into a different family and changed his surname.
I see that Andrew kept his surname up to his death so was he ever offically adopted ?

Thank you for that excellent response!

Alas, beyond what we have already discussed, I only have a few more bit and pieces of circumstantial evidence to offer. I mentioned Harriette (Emary) Roberts, daughter of William Emary and Sarah Ashdown Strange (1802-69). One of Harriette's daughters was my grandmother, Kate (Roberts) Smith (1867-1944). I learned about the marriage of Julia Kate Emary to Baron Lyveden from a tiny, yellowed newspaper clipping that was among my grandmother's things. Since she and my grandfather immigrated to New York in 1893, her family in England must have sent the clipping to her - and she kept it. As I see it, that suggests kinship with Albert's family. There is a family legend about someone in the family serving as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria. I don't know if that's accurate, but the only candidate I can name would be Julia Kate. Who knows: maybe Julia Kate was named after my grandmother? I was not aware that Albert Emary had moved to Maidstone until you mentioned it. That may explain why my grandmother had a photo-portrait taken at Maidstone, around the time of her marriage (1891). Perhaps she was visiting her cousins there.

About eighteen months ago, I was in email correspondence with a lady named Elizabeth Howard who also was interested in in the Emarys of Kent and Sussex. I have saved all the exchanges, and there is a wealth of information within them. I'd be happy to forward them to you...would, of course, need your email address. Mine is: petrocrab@yahoo.com.

Best wishes,
Phil

The Emarys in my tree were from North Kent, Chelsfield and Lullingstone. I had noticed a branch from Sussex who were hotel owners and the Albert you mention had moved to Maidstone late 1880's I believe. I too had found that his daughter married a baron.
Mine were just ag labs and gardeners but I often wonder where they came from originally. The earliest is John Emary and Elizabeth May who married in Eynsford 1792. John was born in Otford Kent about 1773 and died Chelsfield 1855. They had 10 or 11 children, one of whom was William Emary c4 Jan 1795 in Shoreham Kent. He married a Sarah Cousins in 1822. As far as I know they had no children. His brother Charles b1808? (his ages changes quite a bit) was my 2xgreat grandfather,he died1892aged 84. The marriage cert is poorly written.Charles married Elizabeth Peters, there was no age for this couple, in the condition column they were labourers, in the rank/profession column was blank. Marriage coloumn said 'Lullingstone x Shoreham'. Under fathers name was rather a scribble but it looks like Wllm Emry, gardeners. Elizabeth had nothing written about her father. It was in the presence of William Emary and Sarah Emary, which was more readable. I was most upset with this poor quality as it was one of the first certificates I bought. They married in 1840 Lullingstone Kent.

So, the father of Charles is in question although the IGI says his parents were John and ELizabeth. But if it was a William Emary he would have been very young to father a child born around 1808! Charles and Elizabeth were living with John and Elizabeth in 1841, but as it doesn't mention relationships to head of house we are none the wiser.

I've looked at all 10 children and they all lived around Orpington, Surrey and London, one was the inventor of Aquascutum, John Emary b1810. He is the only one who seemed to have a rich life, servants and such, which amazes me that his parents lived out their lives as labourers.

Like you said William was probably from the Sussex branch of Emary's, but I wonder how these two families are connected, they must of somewhere along the line. Do you know when William was born? He must have been quite young when he died. I will have a look on IGI for William born Hastings, although you probably have already. I too would like to know about this William, I hate loose ends! hope this helps.

My 2xg-grandfather was William Emary of St. Clements, Hastings. He was a waiter at the Kentish Tavern in Tunbridge Wells, and witnessed the deathbed will of my 3xg-grandfather, Edward Hilder Strange (EHS) in June 1823. EHS was the proprietor of the Royal Kentish Hotel. In 1826, at Tonbridge, William married Sarah Ashdown Strange, EHS's eldest child. They had at least one child, my g-grandmother, Harriette (Emary) Roberts (1830-99). William Emary died between 1830-34. Sarah then married Benjamin Brissenden in 1834. William Emary very likely was related to the family of Albert Emary in Hastings. Albert's youngest daughter Julia Kate married Fitzpatrick Henry Vernon, 2nd Baron Lyveden (1824-1900), on 15 Oct 1896.

I don't know if this rings any family history bells, but I sure do hope so! Other than what I have written here, I am at a brick wall about William's lineage.

We both have much to tell you. We have a lot of gaps to fill!! My grandfather was a mystery to us, my father never knew him and we had no pictures, only snippets of info what my grandmother told my Dad, which wasn't much. I've just seen your email jump up, I'll be there as soon as I can!!!! regards
aureen.

Your grandfather and my grandfather are one and the same. My father was Sidney Thomas Emary. He married Mary-Agnes Reed in 1936 and had 6 living children. Deric Edward 1937, Dayle Anne 1939 (me), Darien Frederick 1940, Drew William 1945, Dulcie Jane 1946, Diane Mary 1948. Jane, Dad's sister had 3 children. She was married to Walter Brown and he Donald Emary Brown, Shirley Jane Brown, and Allen Emary Brown. All her children are still alive, as are all of my siblings. Dad died in 1966 of cancer, my Mother died in 1959 of stroke. Jane's children and grandchild, William Scott VanSteenburg (Shirley's son) were all the family we knew about growing up.

You can contact me at: daylebrown@comcast.net I have always been curious about how my Dad managed to be totally separated from the rest of his siblings. I know that just before he died from cancer, he went to see one of his brothers in NC. AND, that his second wife who was married to Dad for 18 months before he died did go to England to see at least one of Dad's brothers. I have only spoken to her once, disliked her immensely and have no communication with her. She is still alive and her name is Jeannette. I would also like to see the pictures of my dad and his family. I have a picture of my Dad at 18 yrs old in military uniform, also a picture of a man and 2 women that appears to be pre-1940's. I have no idea who they are, except that they are members of Daddy's family. I will see if I can send those pictures to you for your family files.

He and various members of the family crossed "the big pond" several times during that decade, finally settling here. So..I'm here in the US, as are your 3 remaining first cousins by Jack. :)

Please contact me via email at my registered address here to continue the discussion, as I have quite a bit of information to share that isn't really of interest to anyone but us. This information includes photos of your father and his siblings, and some background information you may not know, concerning the split that occurred in the family.

I've already sent much of the genealogy data I have to Mo in England, along with some commentary and conjecture added by your cousin Win and me.

Together, we may be able to put together the pieces of our family puzzle :)

Hello Brian, I've been trying for a few years to get in contact with some of my cousins from the US, especially Dayle who can tell us more about Sidney Thomas Emary. I'm in the UK. I was on ancestry and then my computer went down and it was a few months before I got online again which is why I have myself on there twice! Anyway, my grandfather was Charles Henry Emary, he died in 1932 and my father (Ronald)didn't know him because his mother told him he had died when my father was a baby. He was actually four and a half years old and it was round about this time my father was put into a childrens home probably becasue my grandmother had to work.
I have no photos of Charles but through a decendant of Eliza Emary (John William's sister) I have a few photo's of John and Sarah in their later years. I have much to tell and would love to exchange my finds. So far I've gone back to John Emary and Elizabeth May who were married 27 Nov 1772 at Eynsford Kent. I have their death certs they both lived well into their eighties!
I look forward to your reply regards Maureen Jurado, nee Emary.
jurado91@hotmail.com

Brian: What a wonderful thing it is to find FAMILY: Other than Jane's children, Donald Emary Brown, Shirley Jane Brown Van Steenburg Viksnins, and Allen Emary Brown, I have not had any contact with the Emary side of the family since 1958 when I last heard from Flo. My baby sister, Diane, communicated with Flo for many years, until her death.
I am so glad to have a cousin who I can identify by name. Tell Winifred that her first cousin Dayle, is thrilled to know about her. I live in Georgia, just outside Atlanta, and have a husband of 49 years, Harry, and two children. Kevin who was born in 1965 and Stephanie who was born in 1967. They live within 25 miles of me in other small towns. Deric lives in north Georgia near Jasper, with his wife; Darien lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado by himself; Drew is currently in Watertown, NY and Dulcie and Diane live near Albany, NY. We have a family reunion every two years and one is due this year. We will probably meet in Massachusetts near Martha's Vineyard. Do all your immediate family live in England? Please let me know the information you have about the family that you can share with me. I am happy to hear from you.

searching for ancestors and cousins

My father was Sidney Thomas Emary from Seven Oaks, Kent, England. He has/had two brothers that at one time had emigrated to USA(Ohio) and later settled in Rutherfordton, NC. The two brothers were Jack(John?) and Leslie. He had 2 sisters that I knew about, Flo and Jane. Parents were Thomas and Sarah. If you can help with my search, I'd appreciate it.

I just checked this message board and noticed your reply. I have information on children of Thomas Reeves Emary and Susan Russell of Hastings, England. Emary's settled first in Mercer Ct., Il, and then moved west to Iowa where they remained. My great gramother, Decima Foster Nowers, was a sister of Martha Foster Emary. As a child, we use to visit with the Emary's in Iowa. Also, my uncle, Albert Nowers, married Jessie Emary, his cousin. They lived in Newton, Iowa, but never had any children. He was involved in banking with her father. Would appreciate whatever information you have that you would like to share. snail mail address: Betsy Wyffels, PO Box 102, Geneseo, Il. 61254 - e-mail eawyffels@hotmail.com. Hope to hear from you.

Thank you so much for responding. You have given me more information in one email than I knew about my father's family since I was a child. Dad married in 1936 to Mary-Agnes Reed and produced 6 live children: Deric Edward in 1937, Dayle Anne (me)in 1939, Darien Frederick in 1940, Drew William in 1945, Dulcie Jane in 1946, and Diane Mary in 1948. Daphne was still born in 1942. Dad died of cancer in 1966 and Mother pre-deceased him of a stroke in 1959. Amazingly, we six are still alive and in good health. How are you and your family doing? Siblings? Etc....

I offer a bit of speculation about our family name, Emary. I would imagine that we are all related by the Name. There are not that many of us Emary's, and we can all trace our heritage to England.

My father is Ronald Emary, his mother and father were Charles Henry Emary and Elizabeth, nee Bartholomew. Charles was the eldest child of John William Henry Emary and Sarah Ann nee Balcomb. Then followed by Florence, Leslie, Eva, John, Edward, Hilda and lastly Sidney Thomas. I'm only just starting out on all this and I'm having problems finding my great-great-grandfather. I think it might be a Charles Emary who lived in Lullingstone, Kent. Which isn't far from Sevenoaks. Also this Charles had a son called Henry who became a schoolmaster. I know more but haven't the enery to write, I'm too excited that I've found you.
Dayle,

Thanks for your reply! I haven't "found" any others, as such, but I do have a nice collection of information gleaned from a family bible, along with quite a few photos and clippings concerning your grandfather, grandmother, aunts and uncles. By the way, your father was the youngest of -8- children, with 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Your family suddenly grew.. :)

Just a short FYI, and for anyone else following this thread:

John William Emary,
Sarah Ann Balcombe,
Married 7 Mar 1886, Chislehurst West, Kent, England.

Children:
Charles Henry,
Florence Mabel (Flo),
Leslie William,
Eva Mary (Dinah),
John Woolley (Jack) (my grandfather),
Edward Gerald,
Hilda Eupheme (Jane),
Sidney Thomas.

Most of what I have is on CD, and could probably be emailed to you, if you'd like. Have you updated your email address here since the last time I tried (unsuccessfully) to contact you?

I noticed the bit of activity on the surname Emary, but nobody is replying. So hear goes. I do not have a direct link to any of you, but there was a Reginald Wilfred Emary in Grey county, Ontario that married a Mary Ann Benedict in 1903. The details are at:
www.genealowiki.com/bin/view.cgi/Benedict/MaryBenedict1879

Let me know if you have any link to this person and we will update the website information.

I have information about Emary's from Kent which may be helpful to someone in this thread. One of my ancestors got this information from a George M. Emary in Hastings in 1937. The Emarys owned several hotels in the Hastings area. Thomas Reeves Emary born 4/28/1789 in Hastings, married Susan Russell who was born 3/20/1789 in Hastings. Thomas died in England about 1850, Susan Russell Emary died 3/1870 in Osceola Iowa.

Their children:

Thomas Reeves Emary, born 12/2/1816, died 8/25/1887.

Frederick James Emary, born 10/8/1818, died Osceola Iowa 11/8/1885.

Walter Emary born 8/6/1820 in Hastings, died while a child.

Edward Emary born 8/6/1820 in Hastings, died when a child.

Valentine William Emary born 8/5/1827 in Hastings, died when a child.

Susanna Emary born 10/25/1831 in Hastings, died 11/11/1831.

Thomas Charles Emary born 11/5/1829 in Hastings, died in India when about 60 years - he was a school teacher in India.

Of all these children the only one who married was Frederick James who married Martha Foster in 1844. Their house was Royton Manor near Lenham, Kent, near Hastings.

Their children were:

Newton Henry, born London 6/27/1846, died Osceola 7/22/1888.

Alice Emary Bell, born 1848, died 1940.

Frederick James Emary born 1850 in London, died Osceola 1931.

William Belcher Foster Emary (my great-grandfather) born 4/22/1852 in London, died Osceola 8/4/1938.

Susan Amelia Emary Piper, born Illinois 1854, died Oakesdale, Whitman Col, Washington.

Walter Charles Emary born Illinois 1857 came to Osceola 1868.

I have much information about the line from William Belcher Foster Emary, less about the other lines. I have information also about the Nowers family who was related to some of the Emarys in Illinois and Osceola, Iowa. There is still one Emary in Osceola, all the other descendents have different names and none of them are in Osceola anymore, as far as I know.

A book "Historic Hastings" by J. Manwaring Baines, avaiable at a bookstore in Hastings, has information about some of the hotels owned by the Emarys.

If any of this information is useful to you and you want more, let me know.

Searching for cousins-Emary of Kent

My Emary's were from North Kent. My great grandfather John William Emary, b1860 Chelsfield Kent lived around the Sevenoaks and Bromley area. He married Sarah Balcomb in 1886. Their children were; Charles Henry b1887 (my grandfather), Florence Mabel b1888, Leslie William b1890 (went to USA in 1914), Eva Mary b1892, John Woolley b1894 (went to USA in 1920), Edward Gerald b1896, Hilda Eupheme b1898 (went to USA in 1923) and Sidney Thomas b1899 and who also went to USA in 1920. They also had an adopted son who was killed on his bicycle in 1926.
Hilda married a Walter D Brown and believe she had two children Donald and Shirley and that she lived in the Albany area of New York. Also Sidney ended up there but I don't know anything other than that. John and Leslie lived in Ohio but Leslie eventually went back to Britain where he died in 1983, Chichester, West Sussex.
I've managed to piece together quite a bit but I need some help.

I came across a marriage of Mary Emary to Aaron Outred 1812 Chelsfield Kent on a disc of parish marriages but I'm not sure where she fits it with my branch. My earliest Emary is John Emary c 8 Aug 1773 in Otford Kent. She may have been a sister of his. good luck, Maureen
