EMBERTSON, HUGH Educator - Genealogist Hugh Embertson was born July 12, 1935 in Valley City, North Dakota, and passed away on April 22, 2003 in San Diego. He was an educator for the San Diego Unified School District for 30 years. He retired in 1991 from Patrick Henry High School where he taught business subjects. Hugh earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of North Dakota and the University of Minnesota. Hugh had great interest in genealogy and pursued such since 1967. Upon retirement he undertook genealogical research on a full-time basis. His work often took him to Scandinavia, where his particular interest was in his Norwegian heritage. His studies included the roots of family members in Europe as well as the storied lives of those who had emigrated. At the urging of the Norwegian Emigrant Museum in Ottestad, Norway, Hugh contributed data about family members who came to America. Hugh was a Life member of the Norwegian Emigrant Museum, the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in Decorah, Iowa, and the Sons of Norway. He was also a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Survivors include his wife, Mary, brother Robert Embertson of Eureka, California, and brother Richard Embertson and stepmother Bernice Embertson of Roseburg, Oregon. Inurnment will be private at Singing Hills Memorial Park in El Cajon, California. A memorial service will be Tuesday, May 6, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 320 Date Street in San Diego. Chapel entry will be on Fourth Avenue between Date and Elm Streets. Friends are welcome. A reception will follow the service.
