I came across Forgotten History supplement from a local Bradford paper and thought this info might be of interest to someone.
The Shah of Persia visited Bradford, arriving on 24th July 1889 and the local population turned out in force to see him. It is a double page article but I am putting the exact transcription about Ellen Emmett below:
The procession from the station brought tragedy. Ellen Emmett, 37, of Fearnley Street, Bowling Back Lane, collapsed in Booth Street. She had either been crushed in the throng, or fallen from a wagon vantage-point.
She was hurried to the Bradford Infirmary in the workpeople's horse ambulance, but died at 9pm.
The Shah said he was sorry to hear of the incident, and offered to help the woman's family if he could.
I hope it is of use to someone and if it is could you let me know please. I'm not researching the Emmetts but though it was the kind of thing I'd love to find about any of mine.
Barbara
