"An Emmons Genealogy" by Corwin Emmons Query

Does anyone have available the book "An Emmons Genealogy" by Corwin Emmons that could do a couple of lookups for me.

I am trying to locate who the parents were of a member of 14th Regiment New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, Company H.

James H Emmons enrolled in the Regiment on 14 August 1862. His Pension papers state that he did not know who his parents were; that his mother died when he was 3 months old and his father died when he was a year old. He said that he was born in Monroe, Middlesex County, NJ on 16 April 1842, but that date may not be correct as we located other dates on other documents that indicate that he may have born anywhere between 1842 to 1847.

We did locate him living in Monroe, Middlesex County, NJ in 1850 with George & Rebecca McDowell.

If anyone has access to the "An Emmons Genealogy" by Corwin Emmons can you please check it to see if any Emmons are listed in it that fit description? (i.e two Emmons that died between 1842 & 1847 within a short timeframe; of James Emmons, etc.)

I would also be interested to learn if any McDowell's' are listed in it.

If anyone has any leads in other books that might help me I would be interested in learning that also.

Thank you for your assistance.
Elias Carroll Emmons was my grandmother's father. Elias was my great grandfather. He was born in Greytown, Nicaragua in 1859. His parents were southerners that had moved to Central America to escape the Civil War and start a 'new south'. The family moved to California after the war in the mid 1860s to Antioch Ca. Elias and his brother William lost their father William David Emmons to pneumonia. Their mother, Elizabeth Jane Miller Emmons remarried. Elias became a lawyer and set up his first practice in Chico Ca. As stated, he went to Sisson to defend a man accused of murder and met Margaret Wooden and married her. They had Elias James Emmons(1891). and my grandmother, Edith June Emmons(1896). The family moved to Bakersfield around 1900. Elias had a thriving law practice and then was elected to the California State Senate. He was indicted for an alleged bribe and sent to prison.(the defense was that this was a political setup by enemies to destroy him) This event forever marked the lives of my grandmother, who loved her father very much and his son Elias Carroll Emmons and wife Margaret. His wife was reduced to taking in borders and lived very frugally during the years he was in prison.(I think it was 5 years))He was eventually given a full pardon by the governor. Elias returned to Bakersfield but was rejected by his wife. He resumed his law practice. He was a colorful character and we have many family stories about Elias James Emmons.

Peter Paul Emmons? Formerly known as Justin Emmons?

Does anyone know of a Peter-Paul Emmons? He changed his name to Peter-Paul, sometime in the late 1970's or 1980's, I assume. His name at birth was Justin Emmons and he should be about 51 years old now if he is still alive. If anyone has any information on him, I woul love to know more. This is my mother's brother, and the last she knew, he went out to California, and hasn't spoken with him yet. This is my Uncle, and it would be great if I could find out more about him.

My great great grandmother was Dorcas Emmons Fletcher, (1806-1881) who was born in Virginia/West Virginia. Her parents were born in Pennsylvania according to the census. Dorcas married John V. Fletcher in Washington County,Ohio. I have found several Emmons names in the Quaker records of Washington County in 1830, after John and Dorcas were married. I don't know the ethnicities of the Emmonses who were Quakers, but John and Dorcas were black. Some other free people of color living in the Marietta area around the same time were Phoebe Emmons, Jesse Emmons, and Rachel Emmons.

Where did you find the lists of servants who carried the Emmons family name in Revolutionary times?

They moved to Dayton in their teen years and both raised their familys there. They also had 6 or 7 sisters. I know this e-mail is several years late, I am just starting on my ancestry hunt. I hope to hear from someone that could tell me more. My Father was Jerry Emmons, brothers Jay and Eugene. I think I can remember some of Harry's sisters names, Slyvia, Pearl, Anna Mae, Lena, Ruth. I understand that there are over two dozen entries for EMMONS in this Bible (mostly births) and that the main time period is from the 1830's through the 1850's. Other families mentioned besides EMMONS are Nobles, Malphurs, Howard, Baggett, White, Wiggins, Lambeth, and Stanton. Won't you please get in touch? Many thanks!

Hello, My maternal grandmother was Marion Emmons, of Huntington WV.
As to Emmons servant names,I have had great luck with Ancestry.com with their copies of early Census records.I've so far been able to find back to 1800, there might possibly be records going further back.
My Grandmother, as a child in 1897, recounted to me having servants in her home. Beyond that I would guess that the early Emmons families in the 17th century might have had slaves, I do not know for sure. as you know, on Emancipation in 1865 by Lincoln, many freed chose to keep their former owners names. I do not know if their was any Emancipation laws in those days for a freed person of color to choose their own surname.Good Luck in your search!

This might help you. Emmons is a English name from England, not Ireland. If you look up in Ancestry.com, or perhaps Google, "U.S.Census of 1930 it lists all Family and other household members in Emmons addresses that year for your Grandmother. The U.S. Census was is done every 10 years.
The earliest Emmons decendants, during Revolutionary times did list having some servants in their Household, which carried the Emmons name onward. Good Luck!
Emmons has a Coat of Arms from England and three Family Crests. Many Emmons have been military, legislature, and highly respected professionals in all fields. Welcome!

Re: What is the origin of Emmons

May be able to help, according to the Emmons Geneaolgy, 1961, Emmons surname is descended from "The Son of Emmon" Variations include the Norman female Christian name "Emma",and could be also related to the name Emmerson, or Emma's Son.It also has it's roots in the Latin name of Amicus" which means "A Friend".Also it can be going back to Olde English name of EAME, or EAM meaning "Uncle"
Apparently, there is a possible link to these ancient names and the word "Dutch Uncle" in today's parlance, meaning a friend, or confidant.
So there you go, hope this helps. Emmons is one of the first families to settle in the New World, dating back to 1690 here in America. There is a Coat of Arms, given to Carolinas Emmons by King William and Queen Mary in England. and three Family Crests. Best of Luck to you,
Marjorie Kelley Margel

Interestingly, I am using the Emmons Geneology, 1961, by Lucille Emmons Mason.
I can only find a Gertrude(Gliso) Emmons, married Theodore Hartwell Emmons, 3-15-22, Divorced. No birth date or place listed for her.
He was born in Burr Oak, Iowa 12-14 1898. He later went on to marry Dorothy Rolfe, Born 1906, in again, Burr Oak Iowa, in 1941.
I don't know if this helps, but as I am also a Emmons decendant, this Emmons Genealogy, may not be a reference you have come across previously.
Good Luck to you.
Sincerely,
Marjorie Kelley Margel

Amen

I have my Grandmother, Flora Elmira Emmons', b 3/14/1880, scrapbook in which she had enough sense to document the members of her family.

The first entry is "James Emmons Sr, was born near Fredricksburg, Virginia in 1760". She then listed his children of which James Emmons Jr, was listed with his wife Judith Southern and all their children... of which Charles William Emmons was listed with his wife Caroline Knapp followed with their children of which Flora was one of them.

I have visited many of the above relatives graves (Riverside Cemetery, Dowagiac, Cass, Michigan) including the Grave of James Emmons Sr, which has a "Revolutionary Soldier" marker on it. I should take take a picture of it along with the marker next to it... Sarah Emmons.

He was married to Catherine (Caty) Stigler and Mary Kelly. Catherine was the mother of his children. If you Google 1839 will of James Emmons you will find this will online.

I have been trying to contact Shelton/Roy relatives to get someone to PLEASE correct the information they have on Ancestry linking my James to Holmes/Homes.
What is the origin of Emmons

I was able to find out that the name Emmons is from the sons of Emma who was a queen in Nordic in the area in the 1100's ,and the sons of Emma where her personal guard. I am not sure if that is true...

any info would be great!

Thanks

Sorry this took so long! So far, I have not found a connection between the New Jersey Emmoms and the Virginia Emmons. There may be a connection though. Maybe someone else has found one!

Francis,

Hope this is still a place you check. I have information on the family of Eliza Ann Wade. She was my great grand aunt. Her parents were Joseph and Olive Connor Wade.

Garland Edgell
