I am new to this, but I am looking for the linage of Thomas Benjamin Endsley, my great grandfather. we do not know the name of his wife. They had 4 children: Mabell(Mabel), George, Granville Owen(my grandfather)and Alvin Amos who was called Albert. They came from Oklahoma. Thomas had two brothers: John and Will. I would really like to find the name of my great grandmother. My grandfather moved to Arkansas. Would like to know if any of his ancestors also came to Arkansas. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tina(AR)

Sandi--We have a little info to share. Joel James Prestidge married Ida Bell Endsley. Their children in order were James, Marion Thomas(Tete), Myrtle, Rufus Frank, and Cora. My husband was third son of Marion Thomas(Tete). We would appreciate any dates of Joel and Ida Bell and earlier family. Also, interested in pursuing Prestidge line. What other siblings did Ida Bell have? What of her grandparents?

The Alma Signal (Alma, Wabausee County, KS)
No: 31
Saturday, April 4, 1896

Mr. Jas Endsley was up from Chalk Wednesday. He was
considerably crippled up in the shoulder and breast as
a result of a runaway which he had in Concil Grove
Thursday. His team were frightened by a bicycle and
run away, breaking the tongue of the wagon and
throwing Mr. Endsley out, dragging him across a
sidewalk and bruising his head, breast and shoulder
badly. He held fast to the line, however, and stopped
the team. He was fortunate to escape with his life. -
Eskridge Star

Later in the year Abe Endsley is mentioned as the
administrator of Jas Endsley's estate.
Endsleys of Wabaunsee and Morris Co.,KS.

The following articles were copied from microfilm at the Eskridge Library, Eskridge, Ks. by R. Joan Endsley. They are from The Eskridge Star and transcribed by R. Joan Endsley.

Feb. 28, 1889, Pg.3,C2
Birthday Party
On last Monday there assembled at the residence of Hugh Endsley about twenty young people in honor of the 12th anniversary of Rachael Endsley’s birthday. It is needless to say that everybody was happy and enjoying themselves as only young people can. Miss Rachael received several nice presents too numerous to mention. The party dispersed after having their faces washed with snow.

Oct 24, 1889
Albert Endsley of Col., brother of our fellow townsman Hugh Endsley, ambushing and shooting him while standing in his cabin door. He was shot just above the heart but too high up to kill him. He walked four miles after being wounded to where there was aid. At last report he was not dead, and it was hoped he would pull through. The sheriff and a posse are scouring the country in search of the party that did the shooting.

Mar. 27, 1890, Pg.3,C2
The 19th last, being the fifty-first anniversary of Hugh Endsley’s birth, a number of his friends gathered at his home, completely surprising him. At 10 o’clock an elegant supper was served and several presents were presented. At a late hour, having enjoyed themselves in various ways, the company dispersed to their homes. Mr. Endsley received the wishes of all present for many happy returns of the like occasion.

May 1, 1890, Pg.3,C2
Married
Randall-Endsley:-At the residence of the bride’s parents, Wednesday evening, April 23, 1890, Mr. Randall of Wetmore, Kan., and Miss Martha Endsley, of this city, were united in marriage by Elder Shepherd. A number of the bride’s friends were present and presented the young couple with a number of valuable presents. The newly married pair departed for Wetmore, Thursday, where they will make their future home. The STAR extends them congratulations and best wishes.

June 5, 1890, Pg.3,C2
J. A. Endsley returned from Kansas City, Kan., where he went to accompany his son William home from the institution of learning for the blind. William has been in the school for the school year and his report is good. In some branches his average grade for the year was ninety-seven. His total average for the year is ninety-five.

Apr. 30, 1891, Pg.3,C2
Cut Into His Lung
There are many instances on record where men have had a knife inserted into their lungs. Such a thing is generally considered a calamity and nearly always results in death. But the case of which we are about to speak was not a promiscuous knife thrust, intended to deprive a man of his life and send his soul hurrying on its way to its Maker and Creator; but it was the studied, scientific and measured cut of the surgeon’s knife, intended to save the life of one who was on the verge of the grave, and whose days appeared to be numbered.

Mr. A. Endsley, son of Mr. James Endsley, who lives on Rock Creek, was the man who was the subject, and Dr. M.F. Trivett was the operator. Some time ago Dr. Trivett inserted an aspirating needle into his lung and drew a large quantity of pus, which it was hoped would effect a cure, but the case was too far gone for that. More aggressive measures had to be resorted to. Therefore, Monday he repaired to the home of Mr. Endsley, chloroformed him, laid him on the operating table, and proceeded to perform an operation requiring the skill of a specialist and the nerves of a man of iron. In the side, a few inches from the shoulder, he cut a gash about one and a half inches long, forced the ribs apart, put in a silver tube and proceeded to draw about half a gallon of pus. The wound was then dressed in antiseptic gauze, and another half gallon of pus was drawn off. The wound was then sealed up air tight.
There was so much pus in the lung at the time of opening the wound that it would rattle and bubble like a pot boiling very hard. The operation was completed, a life had been saved, a family made happy, and a surgeon had again given proof of his ability to perform the most delicate operation.

An abscess of the lung alone is a dangerous state for a man to be in, and equally bad is a plusetic effusion, but when a man is afflicted with both at the same time then it is that life is well nigh despaired of. The operation was one requiring the greatest of skill, and its successful completion, unassisted, by Dr. Trivett proves him to be one of the greatest surgeons of the state, and among the profession of physicians and surgeons he will always be looked upon as a giant of his kind.

July 2, 1891, Pg.3,C2
Abraham Endsley, the young gentleman on whom Dr. Trivett performed the very delicate operation of cutting into his lung and removing about three gallons of pus, thereby saving his life, has so far recovered as to be in town Saturday last. We are glad to see him around and desire to congratulate him on his speedy recovery, and compliment Dr. Trivett on his wonderful success.

Thurs. May 24, 1894
Mr. Hugh Endsley is enjoying a visit from an uncle whose home is in Boone County, Iowa. He has just returned from the Indian Territory, where he has been fitting out a couple of his boys for farming, and is now on his way home to Iowa, where he has large interests. He is a well-to-do gentleman and is greatly pleased with Kansas.

Sept. 12, 1895, Sept. 12, 1895
Died
Endsley-At the home at Chalk, Monday, Sept. 2, 1895, of dropsy, Luella Murray Endsley, wife of Abraham Endsley, aged 21 years.

Mrs. Endsley has been sick for several months and suffered untold agony in her last sickness. She was a kind hearted and generous woman and had many friends. Mr. Endsley has the sympathy of the entire community in which he lives, in his bereavement.

July 30, 1896, Pg.3,C4
Died
ENDSLEY-At his home north of Chalk, Kan., Sunday , July 26, 1896, of apoplexy, Mr. James A. Endsley, aged 54 years, 3 months.
Mr. Endsley’s death was a very great surprise to his many friends. He had been in Kansas City with stock but a few days before. He was attacked with cholera morbus, which was succeeded by a stroke of
apoplexy, resulting in his death.

Mr. Endsley has lived in Kansas for about 20 years and was one of the most prosperous farmers of this country. He enjoyed the respect and confidence of a large portion of the people who knew him.

He leaves a family consisting of a wife and several grown children who were almost prostrated by their great loss. A large circle of friends extend their sympathy. The funeral services were conducted Monday at 1 o’clock under the auspices of Eminence Lodge No. 205, A. F. & A. M.., of which Mr. Endsley was a respected and honored member. Rev. Dow delivered the funeral sermon and the body was interred in the Chalk Cemetery.

The funeral was very largely attended, the school house being entirely too small to hold the host of friends who were desirous of paying their last tribute to Mr. Endsley.

Thurs. Feb. 11, 1897, Pg.3,C4
Marriage Licenses
Feb. 4-Henry E. Endsley and Sarah Endsley, Chalk

The funeral services were held Tuesday and were largely attended. The body was buried in the Chalk Cemetery.

Feb. 2, 1899 Pg.5,C1
Chalk
Mrs. Mallory and daughter, Miss Lillie, returned last week from Missouri to which place they had been on a visit with relatives and friends.

Born, to Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Endsley, January 19, a son. Mother and child getting along nicely and Thomas is already to be out.

Feb. 25, 1899
Upper Rock Creek
Died, on Saturday Feb. 11, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Endsley. The child was laid to rest in the Chalk Cemetery on Monday, the 13th. On account of the intense cold weather at that time very few people had heard of the sickness until after it was buried.

(Forgot to copy date, but was before Aug. 1899, when Hugh Endsley died.)
Mr. Hugh Endsley is safely located at Colfax, Washington, now. He likes the country and expects to send for his family this spring. He thinks he will do well and we hope he will. Hugh is an alright fellow outside of his benighted politics and prosperity may improve them. But we feel sorry for him out there among the Chinamen and mancineta brush, but if he likes it makes money there we ought not to kick. But he must hunger occasionally for the broad plains and sunny skies of Kansas.

Sept. 2, 1899, Pg.1, C2
Died
At his late residence in this city, Thursday evening, August 31st 1899, Hugh Endsley, aged 60 years, 5 months, and 12 days. Mr. Endsley was sick only about 30 hours. Deceased was a good citizen, honest and upright in all his dealings and never known to have a quarrel. He was an old soldier and was buried by the G. A. R. of which he was a member. He leaves a wife and eleven children, four girls and seven boys. Funeral services were conducted at the house and where a great throng of friends and neighbors gathered to pay respect to the departed. Three old soldiers have died almost without warning , in this little city, within a year. Thus are the Nation’s “old guard” failing fast and soon will a nation revere only their memory.

April 18, 1901
Mrs. Mary Endsley, on April 5, was granted a pension of $8 per month. Her daughter Lemmy $2 per month. It seems to us this was a very tardy recognition by the department of the just claims of a needy, industrious and worthy widow. Hugh Endsley, her husband, died in August of 1899, nearly two years afterward she is awarded her dole. Too much red tape to secure timely and adequate acknowledgment of a meritorious claim a t least in this instance, we think.

Thursday Aug. 15, 1901
Mrs. Myra Endsley of Harveyville and Laban Mallory of Allen came up last week to see their sister, Mrs. Poulter who is still seriously ill.

Thurs. Nov. 14, 1901
Mrs. Mary Endsley is arranging her affairs here preparatory to moving to Washington, where she expects to go in about two weeks, accompanied by her daughter, Lemmie.

Thurs. Nov. 28, 1901
Mrs. Mary Endsley and daughter, Lemmie, left for Colfax, Washington last Monday evening, where they will make their future home. Mat luck attend them on their journey and prosperity await them in their home.

Thurs. Feb. 6, 1902
T. M.(should be T. A.) Endsley and wife are happy over the arrival at their home on last Friday, of a dainty little baby girl.(Most likely to be Ethel May). Mother and child are getting along nicely. Tom shows his appreciation of this addition to his family by wearing his store clothes every day.

Thurs. Feb. 6, 1902
Miss Lillie Mallory, who has been visiting and caring for her sister, Mrs. T.M.(should be T.A.) Endsley, down near Harveyville, for some time past, during her illness, came in on yesterday’s train and took passage on Cooper’s Safe Delivery for her home near Chalk.

Dec. 31, 1903, Pg.1,C3
Abe Endsley and wife, of Council Grove, came over Saturday to visit his brother, T. A. and other relatives. Abe looks to be getting his share of the good things of life and are pleased to know that he is succeeding.

Aug. 11, 1904, Pg.5,C2
Wm. Rowley hauled a load of goods for Henry Endsley last Monday.

Aug. 11, 1904, Pg.5,C2
Laura Endsley is out from Eskridge , visiting with her grandmothers, Mrs. Sarah Endsley and Mrs. S. Mallory.

Aug. 25, 1904, Pg.5,C6
Mrs. Henry Endsley is visiting with her son, Tom and family in Eskridge this week.

Oct. 19, 1907, Pg.8,C4
Mr. and Mrs. H.E. Endsley left Friday for a visit of a month with relatives at Westboro, Mo., and his sister at Danville, Ill., whom he had not seen for thirty-nine years. Upon their return, they will visit with other friends in the Indian Territory before continuing their journey to Idaho, to visit other relatives and if it offers inducements enough will possibly locate there.

Sept. 30, 1909, Pg.7, C2
T. A. Endsley left Friday to Holdenville (Oklahoma) to visit his brother(William Henry) who has been blind for years. He wishes to surprise him and no doubt the meeting will be a joyous one.

Oct 7, 1909, Pg.5,C1
Mrs. T. A. Endsley ( Myra Patience Woods Endsley) has sold the Palace Hotel to R. H. Johnson of Osage City. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and daughter, Miss Ada, came Wednesday and took possession. Mrs. Endsley has sold her residence property to E. M. Beach and plans to move to Boise City, Idaho, to join her husband.
I think I might have a little info about Charles and Emily and maybe others. I haven't been through all the information I gathered this past summer at Eskridge, Alma, and Coucil Grove, KS. I'm working on it now. It's a lot to post but it would be good for other Endsley researchers to see.

In 1850 Emily and Charles Endsley were living with their parents in Fulton Twp, Fountain Co, IN; there were 6 other kids. In 1860 the family, without the mother, was in Danville, Vermillion Co, IL. I've seen Charles in searches of the US Census records, but have never tried to track down Emily or Charles. In 2005, when I last looked, a World Tree family tree for Abraham Endsley was posted to Ancestry but I don't know if it still available; it was called Autrey Family Tree and Associated Branches.

Dick,
Oh dear, you are sending me back to some old files. Off the top of my head I don't remember the source for the John En(d)sley of King George's war but believe it was PA Archives. It is in some of my 'old' notes and I hope they aren't buried to deep. I will look for it and let you know.

I haven't worked on this line for a while and certainly appreciate the diligence and thorougness in your research.
Is there any way to check passenger lists for arrival of John En(d)sley of the 1746 reference? It states born Ireland so it would have to be after 1725 but before 1746. I realize that's going about it the wrong way for a true ancestry search but the whole mystery of the tie of John Endsley to the Andrew Endsley estate begs to be solved. There is the possibility that he could have been an older son- not mentioned in estate because he was not a minor child.

Thank you so much for all your work and sources.

Pat

That's the problem with genealogy, new information keeps the old stuff outdated:) Unless the "new" information is shared and corrections are sent to everyone, there will be gaps in the information. I haven't researched the Endsley line in some time, so I'm sure some of the information may be outdated.

I'll be glad to correct whatever is shown to be incorrect if you will send the correct information as what I have was shared with me many years ago, and I'm glad to know research continues to discover more information on these confusing Endsley's:)

My recent research has been narrowed to attempting to update the recent familes of my most direct lines, and that's proving to be quite a project.

Best wishes, and keep up the great work of tying all these familes together and weeding out the misinformation. When people quit researching and updating their files, the information soon becomes outdated and can cause even more confusion.

I thought the Autrey Family Tree on line was wonderful. There was so much work and research. It shed light on Endlsey to Ray County, MO origins. I hope by cousin and fellow researcher can put together a package to share with our children. And I hope when I get enough of the right questions together with the right locations to go on a journney east to appropriate counties in North Carolina and follow the physical trai as best I can. It is such a problem sometimes when names are recorded with different spellings depending on who wrote them. It is also a challenge when states and counties alter their borders through time. I believe people years ago when the world was less populated paid more attention to the person than we who have to alphabetize and quatify. I'm from John Endsley who brougt his mother Sarah to Ray County, then through Henry Ethbert M. Endlsey and his first wife to Everett Endsley.
Cynthia Farmer Nold

I'm years late replying, but back in 2001, we were just starting to look at Farmer family genealogy. The best sources I have seen for Ray County Endsley information are reprints of old histories that include biographies. There is an 1881 Ray County reprint and also the "Portrait and Biographical Record of Clay, Ray, Carrol, Chariton and Linn Counties 1898. The Ray County historical museum is a great resource as is the Richmond public library. You can connect to your immediate Ray County lineage (Endsleys came abt. 1819 from Guilford County, N.C.) and connect your more immediat family to them. Other sources on the web in a good seach will tell you more about the early settlers' origins. John's father was Abraham 1756-1808 and his mother ws Sarah Elizabeth Cummings who is buried 1837)in Ray County. John's grandfather was a John (Andrew) Endsley. There are other spellings for Endsley, and parts of Surry and Rowan Counties in N.C. were later added to Guilford to add extra confusion.

According to information on rootsweb "Autrey Family Tree and Associated Branches" Andrew Endsley's wife Jane Cumings was born in Pennsylvania ab. 1745-50. She lists Andrew Endsley born 1741 Donnegal, Ireland, son of "Sir" John Andrew Endsley (b. 1720 Ireland) and Sara Elizabeth Cummings (b. Ireland 1726). Postings on some other sites have cast doubt on the existence of a "Sir" Endsley.
Mine is the Ray County, Mo line, coming to Missouri about 1819 in the persons of John Endsley (son of Abraham b. abt. 1767 Guilford County, N.C., d. 1808) and his mother Sarah Vance Endsley (b. 1766 Guilford County, N.C., d. 1837 Ray County, Mo.). Am trying to tie this together pre-Abraham and find more information on the "Sir" John Andrew and Sara Elizabeth Cummings Endsley. To add to possible confusion, the present Guilford County includes parts of former Rowan and Surry counties, plus the possible variations on the Endsley name: Ensley, Enslow, Enslo, and variations that may begin with "A".
Cynthia Nold

Mary,

I have been researching the Endsleys in Illinois since my last response to your inquiry in 2005, and the information I've gathered indicates that your George Washington Endsley was born in Illinois, probably in Coles County (Hutton Township).

My ggggrandfather Andrew Endsley (married to Isabel Torrens) and brother of David Endsley (married to Margaret Unknown) left Harrison County, Ohio for Coles County, Illinois in 1838. All of Andrew's children (with the exception of his oldest daughter who was my gggrandmother) either went to Coles County with Andrew & Isabel or shortly after they made the move.

Andrew's nephew David Endsley (husband of Jemima, and son of David and Margaret Unknown) is shown as buying land in Coles County in 1851, next to Andrew Jr (son of Andrew and Isabel). Your Geo Washington Endsley (grandson of David & Jemima)is shown as being born in Illinois in the 1870 US Census. I don't think David & Jemima stayed in Coles County, Illinois, very long because their next child is shown as being born back in Ohio.

Your George Washington Endsley would be the grand-nephew of my ggggrandfather Andrew Endsley.

I haven't seen any information in the census records indicating that George Washington had a son named Harold, and would be interested in any additional information identifying George and Martha's children.

I have additional information on this extended family. If you are interested, please let me know.

Betty

Lucinda and Franklin Paden are my great-grandparents. Dosha King is my grandmother and I am her youngest child, William (Bill)'s , youngest child. I would love to know anything about Lucinda. I had just gotten to know her when she went to be with the Lord. So, anything about her and her family will be news to me. I had a picture of Wilson and have a son who favors him. I am sad to say, I lost the picture in a house fire. I always wondered if there were other siblings. Dewey and Lola are my uncle and aunt. I was a small child when I last saw them. It is sad when families loose touch.

Lucinda Endsley Paden is my great- grandmother. I am glad to know she had a sister. I had heard of and even had a picture of Wilson, until a house fire took it. I was told that he was killed in an ambush. Could this be true? I don't know the circumstances. I was told that Lucinda and Franklin were from different tribes and that her parents were killed (or both died) so Franklin's family took the children in to raise. Does anyone know the circumstances? Does anyone know what tribes they were from? I would like any information. Feel free to e-mail me.

Ensley - Shelby County, Indiana

While looking at the 1900 Addison Township, Shelby County, Indiana census, I came across a Frank and Harry Ensley living in the same house, both listed as head. Can anyone tell me who thier parents might be?

Also, I have a Nathaniel Ensley in Jackson Township, Shelby County, Indiana in 1850, 1860 and 1870, with Mary shown as wife in 1850 and 1860, and Lida as wife in 1870. There is a William A in 1860 and 1870. The kicker here is that Nathaniel is shown as 22 in 1850, 32 in 1860, and amazingly, only 33 in 1870. I have yet to find another Nathaniel, so I'm wondering if this is indeed the same Nathaniel.

An observation .... there were an awful lot of "unoccupied" homes in Shelby County in 1860 - more than I've ever seen on any census. I'm starting to think that the Ensley families must have been in these homes, because I sure can't find many Ensleys (any form of the name) in 1860 in Shelby County!
Elizabeth Endsley - MO (?) > Shelby County, Indiana

I am looking for the parents of Elizabeth Endsley who married Levi Griffith June 1, 1878 in Shelby County Indiana. Seems she may have been born in MO abt. 1855, according to census records I have found. I have yet to find her on a census with her parents, only with Levi and thier children. I found the Levi Griffith family with a William L Ensley listed as brother in law on the 1900 Hancock County, Indiana census, William being 26 and married at the time, and Elizabeth being 45. I would greatly appreciate any help in determining who the parents of Elizabeth and William might be.
