Josephine ENGELMANN Kralj -Yugoslavia to Youngstown, Ohio

BOARDMAN, OHIO – Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at St. Charles Church for Josephine “Phina” Kralj, 76, who passed away Saturday, May 2, 2009 peacefully with her children at her bedside.

She was born Nov. 15, 1932 in Vischegrad, Yugoslavia, a daughter of Johann and Anna Semlitsch Engelmann.

Josephine was a member of St. Charles Church.

She met her husband in a refugee camp in Austria (Heimatbuch, Haid) between 1944 and 1951. Josephine married Anton Kralj on Aug. 4, 1951 and they remained in the camp until 1952.

On April 6, 1955, she went to Springfield, Ill., with Anton and their three children, Anna, Tony and Walter. The family moved to Youngstown (Mahoning County) OHIO in 1956, where they had two more children, Joe and Peggy.

Her greatest enjoyments were being a homemaker and mother, not only to her family, but to all who came into her home. Around the kitchen table, she shared stories about the refugee camp, friendships, family and her real home cooking and her awesome baking, especially her homemade donuts which were loved by all.

Josephine left a lasting impression with her warm gentle smile which was acknowledged by others. She loved to crochet and knit, watch Turner Classic movies and listen to Croatian music on Sunday mornings. In her younger days, she enjoyed traveling overseas to visit her family and was an avid ballroom dancer. She and her husband won awards doing the Polka and Tango.

Josephine is survived by two sons, Anton, with whom she made her home and Walter (Kathy) of Austintown, Ohio; two daughters, Anna Marie Shorthouse of Boardman, OHIO and Peggy (Lawrence) Button of Boardman; a daughter-in-law, Arlene Kralj Peloza of Poland, Ohio; grandchildren, Mark Shorthouse, Staff Sgt. Michael Shorthouse in the U.S. Marine Corps, Michael J. Gismondi, Kristen Gismondi, Rachele Best, Melissa Jackson and Stefanie Kralj; and eight great-grandchildren, including Peyton and Cadence Shorthouse.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Anton, who passed away June 9, 2007; a son, Joseph, who passed away May 6, 1989; three sisters, Albine Knapp, Greta Doffinger and Elsa Jacolivich; and three brothers, Ernst, Adolf and Johann Engelmann.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Szabo & Sons Funeral Home in Youngstown, OHIO and Friday one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family is deeply grateful to those who comforted Josephine during her last years, Dr. Spratt, the staff at Greenbrier, Gentiva (Tony), Shepherd of the Valley, Hospice of the Valley, for their dedicated care, compassion and support. They would also like to acknowledge her good friend, Gloria, who provided company when needed.

Her memory will be cherished by all who were blessed to know her. She was a strong women, a people person, a true giver and loved her children unconditionally.

Youngstown Vindicator, Youngstown, Ohio
Anton,

I do remember playing as kids! I haven't spoken to my father in years and I haven't spoken to my mother, Sharon, in about 3 years now. Was it in Montvale that we used to hang out? I thought it was but my memory is hazy. My email is atengelmann@gmail.com if you ever want to talk back and forth. My wife started getting me interested in seeking out the other side of my family; the Scully side just went down the tubes. It's good to hear from you. If you want to email I can definitely give you a quick rundown of life since Montvale back when we were young...

I don't have any definite placement, but I have a mathias that married a Susanna and her mother was anna schneider. There may have been a Filip and Terassia in the mix. IF this seems like the same, I would appreciate any info. Thanks!

I have a photo taken on Dec 27, 1919 of a baby being held by possibly her father. It is labeled Jean Elizabeth Engelman, 5 months. From the census, it appears that she is the child of Will and Louise Engelman of Cedar Rapids. The photo was taken in Cedar Rapids. It also appears that Louise was widowed by the 1925 Iowa Census.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I haven't been able to make a connection to my families and could some clues. *Photo now posted on DeadFred.com*
Patti
Hello,

I'm looking for Johann Engelmann, born Feb 27, 1825 at Wiebelskirchen. He was a cousin of your Elisabeth (whose name I have as Elisabeth Luise born Jan 4, 1823). His grandfather Johann Christian E. was married twice. Johann's father Christian was a son of Johann Christian E. oo Maria Luise Martin while Elisabeth's father was Johann Nikolaus E., son of Johann Nikolaus E. oo Dorothea Margaretha Kuemmel. Right?

Johann E. went to Pennsylvania. I'm in contact to one of his descendants but actually we cannot trace Johann in the Census of maybe 1860 for sure.

Do you have anything about that branch of the family?

Roland Geiger, St. Wendel, Germany (ten miles from Wiebelskirchen)

Hi,
I have emailed several of you separately, but the message trail here seems to end in 2000. I have recently discovered that my great great grandmother had other siblings, and that her father came to America.
My grgrgrandmother was Elizabeth Engelmann, born 4 Jul 1839.
She came to the US, perhaps with her father. She married John Blank and moved to WV (then Virginia) about 1857 and had several children. The family then moved to Canal Fulton, Ohio where they had more children, the line coming down to me and mine. I would like to share info with others who are interested, either through this board or email. Thanks. Mary Blank Ananea

Check Ellis Island records for ENGELMANN listings

Hi. Maybe there's no connection, but what the heck. My great grandfather's name was Peter Engelmann, born around 1875-76 in Austria. I went to Ellis Is. this summer and saw a number of Engelmann's listed on the wall outside. They may be able to help at the Ellis Is. library. I'd be interested to know if there was some link between us. Thanks.

Conrad KUNKEL m. Marie ENGELMANN abt. 1855 in Clinton, OH (near Akron)

Dear Joan,

You can't imagine how excited I was, when I read your message a few minutes ago, about the Engelmanns in Akron, OH.

My gggrandfather Conrad Kunkel married Marie Engelmann near Akron, in Clinton, OH, about 1855. They both originated in either Burbach, and/or Wiebelskirchen, Germany.

They both moved from there to Belleville, IL, and from there, to the DuQuoin, IL area. I have been having a great deal of trouble in tracking them down, although a third cousin was able to track Marie down to her parents.

If this sounds like your family, please let me know. I would really like to share information with you.

Thanks,
Ron Kunkel

Searching for Engelman(n)s from Silesia

The Karl Engelman(n) or Engleman(n) family should have included siblings Bertha, Emma, Ida, Matilda, Emil, Alwin, Robert and Louis. Ida married Ernest MENZEL, two of the sisters may have married into the OPITZ and WILKE families, as family correspondence refers to Tante Opitz and Wilke. The family lived in Hirschberg, Silesia when son Alwin was born in 1845. I have have references to Bunzlau and Warnsdorf from a 1960 letter. I believe Louis stayed in Hirschberg along with possibly Emil in Oybin and they never immigrated to the US. The sisters may may also stayed in Germany, as 1924 diary entries lead me to believe. It is known that Robert, Alwin and Ida's family (Ida died in Germany) immigrated to Minnesota. Looking for additional family....

Hi Bree

My cousin Ron's wife posted the message you replied to. I made a post with a few corrections above this one. The dates are in the 1900's and the family lived in Sommerville NJ with relatives of Martha Huber before moving to Collage Point NY.

What we need to find out about is the history of the family in Germany. My mother ( Esther ) is pretty sure that her Dad is the only one of his family to come to the US. There are definitely cousins on the Huber side here.

Here's the info I have

Heinrig Rudi Werner Engelmann b. 19 Feb 1906 Frankfort, Germany d. 5 Nov 1985 Queens, New York
Father Louis Engelmann
Mother Lydia Litmann

Martha Huber b. 23 Oct 1902 Stutgart, Germany d. 18 Mar 1959 Queens, New York
Father Ludwig Huber b. 3 Mar 1876 Appenau, Germany d. 4 Oct 1908
Mother Luise Geckler b. 3 Apr 1876 Unterowisheim, Germany d. 27 Feb 1928
