I just read the Obituary for Laura Gommer. I am a Gommer and I might not be able to help you with you Engler root, but I am interested in the Gommer root. My father was Harry Gilmore Gommer and I was born in 1946 in Wilkes Barre,Pa Aug 7, 1946. I have no living relatives except my own children and grandchildren. I guess I would like Fred Gommer (I am assuming he is still alive) to enlighten me with any information he has about the Gommer family. My grandfather was Joseph Gommer and he had two sons Harry and Joseph. There just are not very many Gommers but I am sure they are all related one way or another. Just trying to put a few things together for my children. Thank you Jan

Re: William Engler Family

In the 1900 census, William & Amelia had 3 children living at home, but the census reports that she had had 5 children and 4 of them were still living.
Abraham E., born Apr 1884
Alvin E., born Feb 1886
Susan E., born Jan 1888

In the 1910 census, William & Amelia had a grandson living with them, William L. Gomer, age 6, so they must have had a daughter who married before 1900.

In 1920, William Gomer was living with his parents, Fred & Laura (born abt 1882). Going back to the 1900 census, this Laura was born Mar 1882, and the surname was spelled Gommer. She must be the 4th Engler child.

William Engler was the son of George D. Engler (1825-1884) & Julia Ann Wertz (1830-1878).
George was the son of Mathias H. Engler (c1797-1868) & Elizabeth Lutsey (1807-1887).
Mathias was the son of John Engler, who died in Luzerne Co. in 1828. I’m descended from John’s daughter Elizabeth J. (1802-1890) who married Daniel W. Boone. I can send you more on the Englers if you’re interested.

Lois

Thanks for the Altonah Cemetery link! I followed it (John George Engler is my 4th great grandfather). I had his years but not exact dates of death--nor had I ever seen his gravestone. His wife (according to what I have--Anna Maria Reiswig) appears not to have been buried there, though. His stone states that he had 6 sons & 5 daughters. In my genealogy data I have only 8 children listed, so obviously I'm missing some. I do have a pair of twins listed though: Born January 29, 1805. One is the Samuel Engler also buried at Altonah (at least the birthdate matched and now I have his death date & wife's name). The other twin in my data, though, is named George. This obviously is not the George buried at Altonah since the birth date differs. Maybe (and I have absolutely no proof of this) one of the twins died and, later on, they had another son & named him George as well. Don't know, as I say. My line of descent from John George, by the way, came through his eldest (as far as I know) son: Johannes Engler, born April 20, 1803. That individual married a woman named Mary Beaver and had several children--including both a Samuel (who was my great-great grandfather) & a George Engler born in 1834 & 1840 respectively. Apparently those were common names in the Engler line--my grandfather also was named Samuel (born 1896). Again, thanks for helping me add some details to my family tree. If you have or anyone has any further info on the twins, I'd love to hear it even though they're not in my direct line.

Just discovered an online cemetery index for Altonah Cemetery where John George Engler and many of his children are buried. The link is...

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lehvalcem/...

Interesting how you thought that George Engler might be a twin. Look at his headstone here...
His information:
George b. Jun 28, 1821 d. May 8, 1892

now on the W page with her spouse Charles Warner..
Warner Catharine b. Jun 28, 1821 d. Jan 31, 1895 Wife of Charles Warner

so perhaps the twins were George and Catherine!!

Also see this indexed mailing list for a discussion on Catherine Engler Warner's descendents

http://searches2.rootsweb.com/th/read/PANORTHA/2003-03/10475...

I am from a line of Englers that were born in Russia. Their names were George & Christina Engler. If you look at the passenger list for them, the last name was spelled Engeler. They came over in 1876 and settled in Elm Creek, Kansas. They left Kansas in 1888, went to Nebraska for about 1 year and then came to settle is Rose Hill Township, Minnesota. Some of the kids stayed in Kansas and Arkansas. The majority of them however settled in Minnesota. George & Christine, along with their youngest Lena, settled in Oregon until their deaths. At which time, their bodies were transported back to Minnesota for burial.

Wanda

Wanda --
Which line of Englers are you from?? The other 2 on this thread and myself are from the Dyersville, Dubuque Co. Englers. We cannot be certain of origins. Yes, Engler is considered a Geman name, but as far as I know, no one varified that our line hasn't changed spellings - nor been able to pinpoint any birth records of our Andrew Engler (If anyone has, please let me know. It'd be very appreciated). Also, due to all the uprisings at the time that our line came to America (sometime between 1846 & 1850), the boarders in the area were changing quickly. The name could have been French, Russian, German ....

Jacob Engler (1862-1902) was a German born railroad engineer who settled in New Orleans. When Jacob died in 1902 they lived in Uptown/Carrollton at 2324 Burdette. Jacob’s widow, Margaret “Lillie” Genevieve Zank Engler (1869-), used his life insurance funds and savings to build homes on 737/9 Henry Clay Ave. in Uptown, New Orleans, and the neighboring lot at 733/5 in 1902.

I am very interested in photos of Jacob or Lillie, and to contact their descendants.

Melinda,
After reading your post, I am wondering if my John ENGLER in NE could go back to your family as well. The one thing that might not work here is that it appears that John immigrated around 1884-86, having a hard time reading the actual year on the various censuses. He settled in Gage County, NE, and I've had hard time tracking him or any of his descendants.
In 1910 the family reads like this:
1910 Lincoln Twp., Gage Co., NE Census:
John Engler, 51, Farmer, General Farming, b. GER, parents b. GER, immigrated ? (can’t read), naturalized, spoke English. <1859>
Mary, wife, 44, Keeping House, 15 children with 13 alive at time of census, b. GER, parents b. GER, immigrated 1886 (hard to read), naturalized, spoke English. <b 1866>
Frank, son, 22, Machinist in a shop, b. NE <b 1888>
John, son, 18, Farm Laborer on Working ?, b. NE <b 1892>
Joseph, son, 17, Farm Laborer on Home Farm, b. NE <b 1893>
William, son, 11, b. NE <b 1899>
Amelia, dau, 9, b. NE <b 1901>
Bertha, dau, 8, b. NE <b 1902>
Henry, son, 6, b. NE<b 1904>
George, son, 2, b. NE <b 1908>
Theodore, son, 2/12. b. NE <b 1910>
Helen, dau, 13, b. NE <b 1897>
Do you see any unusual naming patterns or anything that would link him?
Grandma and her family all came from Iowa. One of the sisters (and I'm pretty sure that it was Hazel) married an Ernie Engler and they lived in Belen, NM where he was sheriff for many years.

I am not sure if the Engler(t)s I am looking for would have been in Iowa yet or in Germany. My paternal great-great grandmother was Elizabeth Kunkel, married to Bernard Kunkel. She had been married before to a Schuszler. Her maiden name, however, was Englert--daughter of Balthasar Englert and Eva Schrawz. Bernard Kunkel was born (and died?) in Rothenbach, Bavaria as was Elizabeth Englert. However, their sons, Gabriel, Killian, Martin and Balthasar all moved to Iowa. I don't know if Elizabeth's family also moved there but this may be a connection with your Iowan Engler family.

Any thoughts?

I am trying to find the family of Edward Engler born Feb 1851 in Germany. He married Eunice/Emily/Amelia (depending on which census you look at) born May 1851 Germany. They immigrated 1873-1877 and settled in Manistee, Michigan along with their daughter, Augusta b. August 1872 Germany and son Emil b. April 1877. There was one other child who died before 1900.
Daughter Augusta G. married Charles J. Koller b.May 1867 Mi and they had children: Edward, Edna and Ella. They lived in Manistee as well.
Son Emil married Margaret. No children of record in 1920 or 1930.
Edward died between 1900-1910.
I recently picked up a check from 1895(that is absolutely beautiful, elaborate design) made out to Edward from the First National Bank of Manistee. The only writing on the check is from Edward Buckley, the lumbar baron. Would like to find out if Edwards family would like the check.
Lillian Dambacher Engler (1884-1983), Tuolumne, CA

Looking for descendants of Lillian May Dambacher, who married AUGUST ENGLER sometime after 1910, in Tuolumne County, CA. From about 1908-1910, Lillian was married to my great-uncle, Thomas Walter (or Walter Thomas) Noland (1879-1910) and had at least one child with him, Mary L. Noland Starks (1908-2002). Since I am a Noland descendant, I am hoping that some early Noland family history and perhaps some photos were passed down through the Engler family.

I am related to the Englers of Gage Co., NE. Frank Engler was my grandmother's brother (Anna Engler, born1886 in Germany). I believe Emma was also missing from the census info as the two older sisters were already married by that time. I am also trying to compile info and am happy to share what I have with you. Look forward to your reply.
