I'll correct myself before anyone else has to. When I said "Magdalene and Elizabeth were not daughters but sisters (of Lewis)" I was typing quickly and got confused. They are daughters. Sisters of John Sr. Sorry for the confusion.

Erich

Erich,
So much to cover. Thank you so much for the information. Really helped me to place my Elizabeth Enke, sister of John Enke, Sr. and Francis Enke, and fill in the blanks. The Hiram biography was especially helpful.

The full transcription of the John Enke, Jr. and Catherine Grove marriage:
1854, Jan. 16: (Mahoning Co. Courthouse, Probate, Youngstown, Mahoning Co., Ohio; Marriage License Book, 1852-1857, page 88; Copied by Pat Deoring.):
The State of Ohio, Mahoning County, ss.: Personally appeared Francis Enke and made application for a Marriage License, for John Enke and Catherine Grove of the Township of Berlin in said County, and made solemn oath, that John Enke is of the age of 21 years, and that the said Catherine Grove is of the age of 18 years; that they are both single, and not nearer of kin than first counsins; that he knows of no legal impediment against their being joined in marriage. [Signed] Francis Enke
Sworn and subscribed, this 16th day Jany of 1854 before me. [Signed] H. G.? Sems?, J.B., Judge.

1854, Jan. 19: (Mahoning Co. Courthouse, Probate, Youngstown, Mahoning Co., OH; Marriage Record Book 2, page 80; copied by Pat Deoring.):
Be it Remembered, That on the 19th day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty four John Enkey and Miss Catharine Grove of the County of Mahoning, were joined in Marriage by competent authority, in conformity to the provisions of the Statutes of the State of Ohio, in such cases made and provided; and a certificate of such Marriage signed by Simeon Cord? [or Corel?] Justice of the Peace who solemnized the same, has been filed in the office of the Probate Court for said County of Mahoning, this 17th day of February, one thousand eight hundred and fifty four. Attest: William Hastill, Judge.

Unfortunately, I do not know of any connection between my Charles Grove and his wife Elizabeth Ann Swank (dau. of Henry Swank and Elizabeth Enke (1788-1875)) and the Catherine Grove who marries John Enke, Jr. in 1854. I have no primary sources on Catherine Grove. My Charles Grove is my brick wall. I spent many years trying to connect him to Wendell Grove and his descendants (there are many) that later lived in Austintown Twp., Mahoning Co., Ohio. But I have not been successful. It is just speculation that Catherine Grove Enke could somehow be connected only because of the Enke connection. Elizabeth Enke Swank would have been Charles Grove's mother-in-law. Elizabeth Enke Swank would have been John Enke, Jr.'s Aunt.

I also cannot prove that Elizabeth Enke Swank is the daughter of Ludwig 'Lewis' Jacob Encke, other than circumstantial evidence such as her birth in Northampton, PA shown on her tombstone. Also, her first child Mathias Swank was born in Northampton, PA in 1812. His obituary states: "...Mr. Swank was born in Northampton county, Pa., in 1812, and while yet quite young, he moved with his parents to Luzerne county in the same State. When he became old enough to work he was apprenticed to the wagon making business, and after learning the trade he soon after married and came to Ohio, settling in Canfield in 1834, where he opened a small shop and commenced work at his trade..." Another son of Elizabeth Enke Swank, Amos Swank was born in 15 Sept 1816 in Penn Twp.,Northampton (from another researcher).

Again I have no proof, but I believe that my Charles Grove possibly worked for Mathias Swank's wagon making business in Ellsworth, Trumbull Co.(becomes Mahoning Co.). He is the right age to be one of the 4 males in the Mathias Swank household in the 1840 census. Charles Grove (wagon maker)and Elizabeth Ann Swank married in Ellsworth in 1841...Elizabeth's brother Stephen Swank providing a certificate from her parents giving permission as she was only 17. Then in 1850 census in Berlin Twp., Mahoning Co., Ohio (was Trumbull Co.) my Charles Grove and wife Elizabeth Swank and John Enke, Jr. (single) and John Enke, Sr. and family are all living in Berlin Twp. Elizabeth Enke Swank and Henry Swank are living in Ellsworth. Then in the 1870 census the widow Elizabeth Enke Swank is living next door to Mathias Swank, her grandson. There definitely seems a strong connection, but again I have no real proof that Catherine Grove is a relative (sister) to my Charles Grove. There are lots of Groves in this area, so she could very well not be related at all.

Gail,

I'm afraid that Mowery Watkins tree isn't to be trusted, for a number of reasons:

1) Almost all of the cited research for Elizabeth and Lewis Encke are taken from my tree (I recognize notes that I hand typed into the descriptions).

2) It seems all additional information is suspect. For example, Lewis is listed as having Magdalene and Elizabeth as daughters, which is incorrect -- they're sisters. It also has the common mistake of including John, Henry, Andrew, and Catarina Enck, which was a different family, living elsewhere in the state.

I believe I was the first to list Elizabeth as Lewis' sister, and I have some support for doing so, but I haven't yet found airtight evidence (like a baptismal record) to support that. I'm hoping I can work together with people on that Swank line in order to prove this connection.

Erich

Lydia is John (Sr) and Anne's daughter. The confusion arises because John and Anne also had a daughter named Elizabeth, who married William F. Galbreath. Lydia married William White Wilson, which is well supported. Consider this, for example:

From the 1881 History of Taylor County, Iowa:
WILSON, W. W., farmer, section ten, post-office Mormontown, was born in Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, where he grew to manhood and received a common school education. At the age of eighteen he had learned the carpenter trade and has followed that business most of his life. In 1853 he left Pennsylvania and started west, stopping for awhile in Ohio and Wisconsin, and reaching Iowa in 1854. Here he remained for two years, then went to Illinois and settled in Knox county, where he resided until 1862, when he enlisted in company A, Fourteenth Illinois cavalry. Was with Shackleford on his raid after Morgan through Indiana and Ohio. Also with Stoneman on his raid to Macon and with Thomas at the battle of Nashville, when, on account of sickness, and the war being over, he was discharged. He enlisted as a sergeant and was promoted to the rank of quartermaster sergeant of his regiment. He returned to Illinois and engaged in carpentering until 1868, when he removed to Des Moines county, Iowa. In 1866 he was married to Miss Lydia A. Enke, of Ohio. They are the parents of five children: Wm. E., Rozella and Rozetta (twins), Mary and Pearl. Mr. W. is a member of the A. F. & A. M.

Here we see Lydia (Enke) Wilson with her maiden name. He's from Luzerne county (very close to Northampton Co), and basically travelled with the same group all the way from PA to OH, IL, and IA.

Judy, I believe, has Lydia's obituary, which would be even more telling.

Judy and Erich,
I agree with Erich. I believe my Elizabeth was the sister of John Enke Sr. (1798 to 1854) married to Nancy Ann Pryor. Elizabeth Enke Swank was the daughter of Ludwig 'Lewis' Jakob Encke (name found in the "Mowery Watkins" tree). He appears early in the 1790 census in Heidelberg, Northampton Co., PA (under Lewis Incky); in the 1800 census in Penn Twp., Northampton Co. PA (under Lewis Eneke); in the 1820 census East Penn Twp., Northampton Co., PA (under Lewis Enkey).

Judy, so who is this Lydia Enke Wilson? Do you have dates? Locations?

I just made a extra copy of the Wilson/Enke book and will pick it up later this week. There isn't a lot on the Enke family, but some arrangements could be made to have it sent to you. My descendant was also the brother of Hiram and was a resident of SD. Perhaps we share family members.

First, let's list out the facts and sources, and then we'll see what we can determine from that.

Source #1: Hiram's biography
http://www.illinoisancestors.org/knox/Biographies/Biose.html...

1886 Portrait & Biographical Album of Knox Co., IL.

"The children of this family [John and Nancy (Pryor) Enke] bear the names respectively of Edward, Lewis, Francis; John, deceased; Jessie; Josiah and Alford, who died in infancy; Josiah and Alford, namesakes of the little ones lost by death; Elizabeth, Sarah K., Hiram, our subject, Lydia, Mary and one twin sister, who died in infancy, unnamed."

Source #2: 1850 Federal Census: Berlin, Mahoning, OH

#1245, John Enke, age 25, male, white, farmer, real estate valued at $1600, born N.J., can read and write

On the very next page, we find the entry for John (age 62) and Ann, with Elizabeth, Sarah, Hiram, Lydia, and Mary still living at home.

Source #3: Mahoning County, OH, marriage record

I suspect you have a better verbatim record of this than I do. I'd love to see what you have on this source. Here's what I have:

Enkey, John married Catherine Grove 19 Jan, 1854 in Mahoning County, OH. Francis Enke applied for the license.

The "Enkey" spelling shouldn't concern us. The listings for this family had all sorts of spellings in this time period: Enke, Enkey, Enk, Encke, Anky. That's not even generally speaking -- those are spellings for OUR family. One descendency on Edward's side has maintained an "Enkey" spelling.

Source #4: 1855 IL census, Knox County

(Household of) John Enke
Free white males: one 30-40 years old
Free white females: one under 10, one 10-20 years old
Total: 3 persons
1 person eligible for militia
Value of live stock: $300

(Ann is listed elsewhere, as head of household. Others listed nearby include G.W. Enke, and Josiah Enke)

Source #5: Uniontown Cemetery, Knox Cty, IL

John Enke
Died
Oct 26 1854
Aged
65 years

Our
Mother
Ann Enke
Feb 7 1858
Aged 57 yrs
ENKE

John Enke
Died
Dec 25, 1857
Aged 35 Yrs 2 Ms

I can personally vouch for the correctness of this transcription, since I was there at the gravesite.

Conclusions

John Jr and John Sr are most definitely different persons, since they show up within the same 1850 census.

John Jr is related, since Francis Enke applied for the license, and John is listed in Hiram's bio as John Sr's son (deceased already by 1886). We don't see John Jr's name alongside John Sr's in the censuses, because the 1840 Federal census still only tallied children by their age and gender.

John Sr could not have married Catherine Grove, since the marriage was in 1855, and John Sr. died 1854. Besides, the difference in ages between John Sr. and Catherine Grove would have raised some eyebrows!

From the above, we can list these vitals for John Jr:
* born October, 1822 in New Jersey (Ann is said to have been from New Jersey. They may have been visiting family at the time)

* married Jan 19, 1854 to Catherine Grove. The Francis that applied for the license would have been his brother.

* died Dec 25, 1857 in Knox County, IL

IF Catherine Grove is related to your Charles Grove, and IF Elizabeth Enke Swank is indeed John Sr's sister as I suspect, then that means John Jr is marrying a first cousin a few times removed. Certainly, John Jr was in the same area of Ohio at the same time as Elizabeth Enke Swank and her family, so that much checks out. But I don't know anything about this Catherine Grove from any other source than the marriage license and the 1855 IL Census (she was 10-20 yrs old in 1855 -- yes, she was probably only just 18 or 19 when married).

What sort of primary sources do you have on Catherine Grove and her relatives, Gail? What leads you to believe that she's related to Charles Grove and the Swank line? What do you know about Elizabeth Enke Swank, married to Henry Swank? Can you prove that Elizabeth Enke Swank is the daughter of Ludwig 'Lewis' Jakob Encke? I have baptismal records for John and Magdalene, but I have not yet found a baptismal record for Lewis' other daughter. I presume it to be Eliabeth, but can't yet prove it.

Erich Enke

I'll reply more in full later, but yes, Catherine Grove married John Jr, and I do have some substantiation for that. John Sr and John Jr are buried close to each other, but John Sr died 1854, whereas John Jr and Catherine are on the 1855 Knox Cty IL census... they had probably just one daughter before he died young 1857? 1858? I've got it in my notes.

But I want to do your question justice and get the sources and dates accurate. I'll reply again soon.

If you're related to Elizabeth Enke Swank, wow do I have questions for you!

Erich

Hi All Enke descendants. Questions:
1. Did John Enke Sr. have a son John Enke Jr.? What proof is there?
2. What are the vitals of this John Enke Jr.?
3. Does anyone have any information on the marriage of John Enke to Catherine Grove on 16 January 1854? Was this a second marriage of John Enke Sr? What proof is there? I believe J. Paulson has this as a second marriage. Or perhaps this is the marriage of John Enke Jr.??? How is Francis Enke involved, as a brother, uncle, son, cousin, etc.?
4. These are my notes on their marriage:

1854: (Mahoning Co. Courthouse, Probate; Youngstown Mahoning County, OH; Marriage License Book 1852-1857, page 88; copied by P. Deoring; I have copy of license and marriage.): Marriage. Is this John Sr. or John, Jr.???

Catherine Grove and John Enkey, 19 Jan. 1854, Berlin Twp., Mahoning, Ohio; application made 16 Jany 1854 by Francis Enke.

The marriage entry shows "Miss Catharine Grove", which suggests a younger woman and unmarried. The license entry shows it was applied for and signed by "Francis Enke". Francis was born about 1820, age 34 in 1854, the son of John Enke of 1788 according to Bob Enkey. This could be Francis standing up for his younger brother John Enke, Jr. (if John Enke, Jr. is a son of John Enke, Sr.) I don't think this is a son of Francis Enke. John was at least age 21 at his marriage in 1854 which puts him born around 1833 or earlier. Francis and Rachel married about 1846 (1900 census) which is long after 1833. Francis would have been only 13 yrs. old in 1833 which makes him impossible to be the father of this John Enke.

Catherine Grove had to be legal age of 18, thus, born 1836 or earlier. John Enkey had to be legal age of 21, thus, born 1833 or earlier.

4. Why am I interested in this Catherine Grove? Because my Charles Grove (abt. 1813 - abt. 1866) is married to Elizabeth Ann Swank (1823-1874) who is the the daughter of Henry Swank and Elizabeth Enke (1788-1875), daughter of Ludwig 'Lewis' Jakob Enke. Charles Grove is my brick wall. Can't find his parents or siblings. Is Catherine Grove a sister? They were all living in Berlin Twp., Mahoning Co., Ohio in 1850 census.

5. Does anyone have any information on Catherine Grove and John Enke after their marriage? They seem to disappear.

Hi Joe. Sorry to have "ignored" your email, but you have the same name, and email address of my son who lives in Havelock, North Carolina. The only difference is his last name has a "y" at the end of Enkey. I was wondering why he wanted the information, since he instigated the reunion. We are excited about this years reunion. We were excited about last years reunion, and had over a 100 people at our first reunion. So glad you are planning to come. Okay! You main destination is Wagoner, Oklahoma. Upon arrival in Wagoner, look for Wal-Mart (which is on the main truck route Highway 69. Go North toward Chouteau. About mid way you will come to a flashing light. Turn right at the flashing light. Then you will come to a convience store, and the road will go straight or curve to the right. Curve right, and follow the road to a big Baptist church. At the church, you will see a sign Tulakogee, turn right, go to the intersection, see the Tulakogee sign, turn left follow the road (it will automatically curve) until you see the arch way to Tulakogee. Now if you are in Chouteau, highway 412, take the Waogner exit. Go about midway to Wagoner, where you will see a flashing light. Turn left and go all the way to the convenience store, and then follow the above directions from the convenience store to Tulakogee

How is that possible that Lydia would be the sister of Elizabeth Enke Swank?

On Elizabeth Enke Swank's tombstone, it says:
Elizabeth Enke
Wife of Henry Swank
Formerly from Northampton Co.
Died October 12, 1873
Aged 87 years

That would place her as being born around 1786. John was born 1789. John had two sisters according to the censuses, and I'm guessing this Elizabeth was one of them.

Whereas we know Elizabeth, John's daughter and Lydia's sister, was born around 1833. She was married 13 Jan 1853 in Columbiana, OH to William F Galbreath. Her gravestone is here:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ga...;

Judy,
Hiram was my great grandfather. I have corresponded with you before. I am getting all the information I can find together on Hiram. I would love the Enke part of the book if possible. My e-mail is cjsnotes@yahoo.com. I see were he filed for a pension in Oklahoma in 1903.He was living with my grandmother Lula Enke Cooper and her family in Chestnut,Knox,Illinois on the 1900 US Census. On the 1910 US Census they were all in Geary, Blaine,Ok. The census was taken 23 Apr 1910 and my mom Louella Pauline Cooper was born 14 Jul 1910.My Grandparents were running a Hotel and Hiram had an Opera House. They must have fallen on hard times shortly after that by 1914 my mom had been placed in the Illinois Soldiers Orphans Home with 3 other sister's. It was said in his Bio he suffered an illness while in the Civil War he never really recoverd from. I wonder what that illness was. He died 28 Jul 1918, in Riverside, Adams, Illinois. Would love any other information I could find on the Enke's and my great grandfather.

I have the book mentioned. Lydia Enke Wilson is my gggrandmother. I would be glad to scan the Enke part of the book. I'd like to learn more about Hiram. He sounds like an interesting person from what I've found. Lydia and her husband William White Wilson were 'progressive' farmers in South Dakota.

Re: Deed of Sale. John and Ann Enke, leaving Mauch Chunk Oct 1832

A couple interesting bits (apologies if this gets
posted twice)

This is definitely our John and Ann, since there are
Pryors witnessing. This document ties them to the
Mauch Chunk area. However, that doesn't eliminate the possibility of them having visited Lancaster County, and I'm still interested in any references to primary sources placing them there.

The timing is right. Elizabeth was born around 1833 in Pennsylvania, but Sarah K was born in Dec 1836 in Ohio. For them to have sold their remaining land in late 1832 fits nicely.

East Penn Township is specifically named. John and Lewis
are named right next to each other in the 1820 East Penn Township
census.

The estate was an inheritance from a Jacob Noll. Who was he, and why were John and Ann so important to him? The date of the execution of the will is listed. It shouldn't be hard to look up.

John Pryor was the Justice of the Peace who
wrote up this document. That is perhaps a brother of Ann's, but much more likely her own father!

I believe Hiram to be My direct descendant's brother, and would like to have the details of the Oklahoma Enke Reunion sent to my email address joeenke @ Yahoo.com (no Spaces). My grandfather James Merle Enke and my Father Dean Alen Enke are considering coming to Kansas City and spending teh night then I would join them on teh trek to see family we never knew of. Do any of you know the connection to John Marshall, Grandpa has a book about the Brick House John Made in Des Moines County Iowa and there is a connection to the Enke's that I can not recall. Also does anyone have a copy of the Wilson-Enke Connection book that I have read about from a descendant in SD?

Excellent questions!

Regarding John's birthdate in #1:

Page 171 of "Heidelberge Church, Heidelberg Township, Lehigh County, PA. A History and the Church Records 1740-1978"

I have a picture of this source in my record for John in my tree. Transcription of the text in that source:

(Parents)
Ludwig Encki
Elisabeth

(Child baptized)
Johannes
b. Sept. 5, 1789

(Sponsors)
Johannes Reber
Elisabeth

==== end quotation ====

Regarding Anne's birthdate in question #2, I have it secondhand from Jack (in the Mauch Chunk historical society) that she was born Jun 24, 1799 to John Pryor (1771-1838) and Keziah Weeks (d. 1843). I haven't yet received any reply to my requests for primary sources.

I have a picture of her grave somewhere. It's also online in an obscure location. If I remember correctly, the gravestone implies 1801 for a birthyear. I'm trying to hunt up my genealogy stuff right now anyhow, since we're getting together with my parents for a few weeks.

Erich

Erich, about those errors you mention. I was going to post requesting a bit of clarification, but then discovered I didn't need to for the first item, but will post the information I have in case someone else is needing it.

1) "John was born in 1789, not 1800 as it says here." The 1789 agrees with him being 62 years old as it says in the 1850 Ohio census.

2) "Anne's birthyear is also incorrectly 10 years later than it should be." So you're saying that the tombstone or the biography is incorrect and based on what?

Connie,

Please forgive me. My faulty memory thought it was an obituary
when in fact it's a biography. It's freely available online here: http://knox.ilgenweb.net/biographies/bios_e.htm

A couple of the dates seem to be wrong. Inconsistency on dates isn't uncommon in this family. I've been to John and Anne's graves. John Sr's grave says, for example, that he died 1854 (it really looks like 1851 until
the light hits it right and you can see the additional strokes of the 4), aged 65 years. John was born in 1789, not 1800 as it says here. Anne's birthyear is also incorrectly 10 years later than it should be. There seem to have bee inaccuracies in Alfred A. Enke's biography also. Odd, but I've learned to expect some quirks here and there.

Erich

Not just the Wilson connection, but there's several Upsons that married into the family as well. George Washington Enke married a Silva Upson. Edward married Clarissa Upson. Sarah K married Horace Upson.

So both the Wilson and Upson connections really point to George being related somehow. But then why wasn't George mentioned in Hiram's obituary? Is he Alford, whom I can't find any mention of anywhere?

It's possible that Hiram's obituary is limited to the children of John and Anne. But if there were a second marriage involved, the dates don't line up well, since Edward, Lewis, and Francis were already born.

I might have thought George was the son of Johann, John's uncle and Ludwig's brother (if my research is to be believed), who may have settled in Virginia. Edward went to visit Virginia later -- their first daughter Marianne may have been born in Virginia (I have one source that points to OH, and another to VA. They might have been on the road at the time). But usually the stuff I see on George Washington Enke says that he was born in Pennsylvania.

John had two sisters, but any of their children wouldn't have likely had a last name of Enke.

There was another perhaps-brother of Ludwig named Isaac, about whom I can find no information. Perhaps he died in the war.

I simply don't have George Washington Enke on my tree yet because I don't know where to put him. But he definitely belongs in the family. Wilsons. Upsons. And not just that -- he moved to Morning Sun area from Knox County. He's related for sure. I just don't know how.

Taken from "http://daughertycarringtonprairieroots.blogspot.com/2009/06/..."

The Huge John Enke Family
to continue sharing information found at www.the-roundup.com/quaker/bevans. Lydia Enke and her brothers Josiah (GreatGreatGreat Grandpa) and Hiram had many brothers and sisters. I don't have the correct count, but find 16 listed in my records. One of these was Mary, who was two years older than Lydia.

Here is her obituary: From the Memphis Reveille - Feb. 6,1936. "Mary Enke and a twin sister, youngest in a family of 15 children, of John and Ann Enke, were born in Ohio, October 24, 1842. Mary spent her girlhood days in Ohio and on October 23, 1870was married to Edmond C. Peel of Morning sun, Iowa. To this union was born one daughter, Maude, who married Charles Wilson. Edmond C. Peel was born Feb. 16, 1847 and died Feb. 4, 1901 and Mary died J. 27, 1936. Survived by daughter and grandchildren; Vernon Wilson of Memphis, MO, Mrs. Ila Weir of Mexico, MO and Buford Wilson of Rutledge Missouri. Burial in N. Bethel Cemetery, Memphis, Missouri.

Note: I don't have a Maude listed as Mary's daughter. Rather I've listed two children, Arthur and Ida. I need to do some research on this. I also don't have a sibling on my listing with the same birthdate as Mary. I do have the 16th child being a "?". Could that have been the twin? Perhaps she was stillborn.

On the Census Record - Ohio, Mahoning Co., Berlin Twp, Sept. 21, 1850 John Enke, born in Pennsylvania - farmer and Ann Enke, born in New Jersey, are listed with Elizabeth, 18, born in Pennsylvania, Sarah (13), b. in Ohio, Hiram 11, born in Ohio, Lydie A.,9, born in Ohio, and Mary 7, born in Ohio.

The same census lists another sibling of Lydia. John Enke, 25, b. in New Jersey - farmer. Also included in this website is John Enke marrying Catharine Grove, Jan. 19, 1854. Another sibling, Francis applied for the license. I just noticed that on my records I had Catharine Grove listed as a wife for John, senior...along with Ann. Changed that one!!!
The 1880 Census of Washington, Des Moines, Iowa. Lydia's sibling Josiah is 51 - Farmer, with Cynthia Ann his wife and their children Elysabeth, 19, Charles, 13, Louis, 10, and Nellie, 8.

Also in this census are Frank (Francis) 21, and Clora, 19. Frank is the son of Josiah. It is interesting to note that Josiah's daughter, Elizabeth, b. 1860, lived in SD in 1913. The last names of her spouses were Shaw and Burton.
The funeral services were held from his late home Tuesday forenoon, conducted by his pastor, the Rev. D.L. McBride. The interment was in the Elmwood cemetery, near this place. Mr. Enke was born in Pennsylvania, Dec. 22,1828. After a residence of some years in Ohio and Illinois, he came to Iowa in 1855, settling southwest of Morning Sun, on the county line in Des Moines County, where he lived several years. He was married to Cynthia Ann Bevans in 1848. Mrs. Enke died in 1892, since which time he has made his home with his son Lewis, living north of Winfield for the past nineteen years. Nine children were born to Mr. Enke and wife, six living at the present time. The surviving children are; J.W. Enke, Charles Enke, Lewis Enke and Mrs. Nellie Enke of winfield; Frank Enke of Mt. Union and Mrs. Lizzie Shaw living in South Dakota. He also leaves two sisters and one brother to mourn his death; Mrs. Mary Peel of Memphis, Missouri, who was here to attend the funeral; Mrs. Lydia Wilson of Wessington, SD and Hi Enke of Hinton, Oklahoma. He was a member of the U.P. Church at Winfield and will be greatly missed by his relatives and friends.

^That definitely is my Family, location and stories all match.

This is also interesting as I recall a book my Great Grandfather Cy Hutchcroft that he used to look up families in, My last name is obviously Enke, but my second cousin is a Wilson, I would love to kwno if this is just coincindence and would like to see this book being mentioned on thsi blog.
http://daughertycarringtonprairieroots.blogspot.com/2009/10/...

Hi, Lewis Enke and wife Elizabeth were baptismal sponsors for my 2nd. great grandfather Lewis Haney, b. 1813 in Mahoning Twp., Carbon, at that time Northampton County PA. The baptism occured at the Ben Salem Church off Rt. 895 east of the Lehigh River, near today's Ashfield. So I can guarantee that Lewis and wife were in Northampton County, now Carbon in 1813. If you would like more information contact me directly at judyd @ shenhgts . net (no spaces between as shown, I do that to confound harvesters), I'll be happy to share what I have.

Hi Connie, we are not sure when our son in North Carolina is coming. So my son from Keys, Oklahoma and I decided on the 26 June in Tahlequah. I have made arrangements with the manager of Holiday Inn and comfort suites to reserve some rooms for us at a discount. Please do try to come and bring your family history so we can compare notes. When you arrive, please call us at 918-456-4844, and we will come in with our family history, and see how we can improve our family history. Looking forward to seeing you. Thank you. Also, the community building where we will meet, is in Keys Oklahoma, about 5 miles south of the Comfort Inn.

Hi Nan,
That would be wonderful. I am still working but I will certainly try to get the time off to come. The time period of June or July would be fine. It does not matter which as long as I know ahead of time to arrange to get off. It would be so nice to meet some of the people I have exchanged information with and all who have helped me so much. Please keep me posted.
Connie

Hi Connie, I am Nan Enkey, and my husband is a direct descendant of John Enke and Nancy Ann Pryor. It was through Hiram, in the books at the Galesburg Library, that we found his mothers' name. We also spent a lot of time at the Knoxville Library searching the connection of Hiram. We live near Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and our sone from North Carolina is hoping to come in the last two weeks of June or the first two weeks of July, and he is hoping to have a family reunion of the Enke/Enkey family, and get as many people related to this family here in Tahlequah. We are working on finding these people, and hope they will be able to come and bring their information on the Enke/Enkey family. We are planning a Saturday and Sunday reunion. If you think you can come, please let us know when would be best for you. My son is connected with the military base, so he is not sure if it will be June or July, but that time period.
Argalia Lonzo Enke lived at Mt. Vernon, Franklin, Texas, and is buried there. He has three daughters/granddaughters , one that lives just outside of Mt. Vernon, another one a short distance from there, and another one distantly. Some of the old timers would know. Nan Enkey
