Mel, first my email is clsdean@aol.com

I got Jacob's name from the marriage records of Mary Ann. She was married 3 times. I have never been able to find the Mother's name.

As for her Indian heritage....yes, it is talked about but I don't think she was a full blood. She DID have black hair but that means nothing. That black hair is the basis of the family legend that SHE was the Indian.

She and Adam did have some children who died young and their physical description in their death records describe them as "black" complected. So maybe so. ONE branch of the family (one of my Grandmother's brother's descendants) states that Mariah was the daughter of a Cherokee "Medicine Man" whose name was Doctorman and a Cherokee "Princess". Nevermind that the Doctorman's were from Germany via PA. LOL. The name was originally DOCHTERMAN. And there were NO such things as Cherokee "Princesses".

Her (Mary Ann) daughter Mariah Doctorman md Elijah Franklin LOCKERBY and I suspect that HE was the son of the Indian.

My Grandmother always swore that she was 1/4 Cherokee. She was very specific about the degree and the Tribe.

Elijah's military records state that he was dark complected, black eyes, black hair. His Mother is my "mystery woman" Her name was Lydia and was born in either NC or TN depending on which census you read. I suspect it might have been in that corner of NC that became TN and was also Cherokee country. Mr. Lockerby of course was a Scot and they DID find their way back into the hill country of NC and intermarried with the Cherokee.

Lydia also marred 2nd a Henry Freeman. Freeman is one of the common Cherokee surnames. They moved to Southern KS right across the line from Indian Territory.

All of this is conjecture of course as I have been told by Cherokee "experts" that there were NO Cherokee in IL before the Trail of Tears. Lydia was in IL by 1830 and Mary Ann was born there in 1825. I will keep searching on this.

email me please.
