I have scanned the photos you have posted on this site. My mother is a descendant of Christopher Christian Ensley. How can I get copies of the photos of the Ensley's directly associated with this line. Also I would like to know how to get to the Ensley Cemetary. My Ensley line lives in Ohio but I live in WV and would like to visit the Crystal Springs area. I couldn't tell by the pictures, is the home built by Christopher Ensley still standing. I understand he hand-carved the mantles.

You can email me directly westonbutterfly4@yahoo.com

Sandy

Stanley ENSLEY married Delia Ann JARVIS, and they had two children, Mary Ann ENSLEY, and George Stanley ENSLEY. Mary died not long after her last child was born. Mary married Zachariah GIBBS.
Thank you so much for your reply. I just wrote an e-mail to Dillard to see if I might be able to get more information. I don't know what exact area of NC John Ensley is from :( What information that I do have is from my grandfather's bible. I know that he was born in NC in 1827 and was married to a Betty Buck. He also has a brother named Joe and a sister named Mary. But that is all I have for right now. Keeping fingers crossed that maybe some of these names might be recognized by someone. Thank you!

The reason I am contacting you, is my gggrandmother's name is Nancy Jane Edsley. I cannot find any info on her, other than she was married to a John Nixon. No dates. They had a son, John Washington Nixon, who was born abt. 1875 in Monroe County, Ohio. Do you have any of these names in your family line? I would appreciate any help.

If you have the time to locate that map and other info and let me know what you find out, I would appreciate it. It might help me focus better on my own research. I am trying to sort out the various Ensleys, Endsleys, etc. in this area in the latter part of the 1700s.
John Darrell Endsley (The Endsley Family in the New World) says that the most common early spelling associated with his family, first found in Lancaster & Cumberland Counties 1753-1757 was also Enslow, and I have seen the spellings Enslo and Ensloe in early documents relating to my family in North Carolina in the 1770s. They all claimed to be Scotch Irish.
Do you know the German original of Enslow? How did you find the German origin of your family? Maybe I am looking in the wrong places! I see that one of the early Bedford Co Ensleys is listed as "Stofel", which is clearly German, of course.
I asked about Christopher Insley/Ansley/Ainsley of New Jersey because of the common name (Christopher) and the common New Jersey background with the Bedford County Ensleys. (Could these families have come over as "British" soldiers, so many of whom were actually Hanoverians?
I don't know anything more about Elizabeth Martin than what she says in her application for a pension for the service of her deceased husband George. She claims to have arrived in Bedford County at age 11, so about 1775. Interestingly, another Hannah Martin married into my Endsley family in Indiana in 1833. Her sister, Elizabeth, also married an Endsley there in 1834 and was my great-great-grandmother. Their parents were James Martin and Sarah Wasson, but other than their dates of birth and death, I know nothing about them!
I look forward to hearing from you again. Please feel free to contact me directly.

I have somewhere a plat of the land grants or patents, descriptions of the properties, and the date they were issued. Give me a little time to find it. The family could have been on the ground a couple years before or after the date it was granted. This Eliizabeth Martin, what is she to Hannah Martin who owned a large piece of property within a mile of the Ensley's. And to James Martin who was a delegate to the Continental Congress, he is buried here.
As to the Ensleys being related to Christopher Ainsley, I don't know. Ainsley sounds English, the Ensley were German and spelled it Enslow for a while after they came here

I've no idea what correct protocol is in the U.S. these days on this volatile subject.

I am white, Anglo-Saxon, nominally American.
I have found numerous black, African, American persons sharing my maternal surname.

I have also, in the course of my research, found data that names slaves owned by my ancestors, and, sometimes, data that links those slaves to families that might be traced.

I understand that such info does not lead "back home", just as much of mine does not, but it occurred to me that the accumulation of such info might be useful to others.

What do you think? Is it useful for me to collect and collate this info? And what, then, is the best way to pass it on?

Jim Boyce
Farges, France

Does anyone know when the Ensleys arrived in Bedford Co. from New Jersey? In her petition for his pension, George's wife Elizabeth Martin says that Geaorge went to war from Bedford Co., as a substitute for his father, for the first time in 1776. Elizabeth says that she arrived there herself at age 11, so about 1775-1776.

Was this family related to the Loyalist family of Christopher Ansley/Insley of Sussex Co., NJ?
