It's wonderful to hear from you! Thank you so much for writing. Also, I wanted to say thank you for posting those delightful images of baptism and marriage records from our early Ensminger lines. It is wonderful to see real evidence being offered. That is a rare and precious thing. Thank you.

I'm so glad to see that research is still being done on our Ensmingers. I have sent you a private message, with my e-mail address. I hope to hear from you, and that we can help one another in any future research.

Greetings. I just found your Ancestry message board posts about George Frederick Ensminger while looking for something else. That's how it often works.

I descend from John Ludwig Ensminger (1731-1761) and Eva Christina Philippi (1730-abt 1761). John Ludwig is the brother of your Nicholas Jr Ensminger (1736-1815). Nicholas Jr and his wife Catherine Crow, b about 1740, are the parents of your George Frederick Ensminger b 23 Jan 1775. John Ludwig and Nicholas Jr. are sons of Nicholas Ensminger (1699-1786).

There is another George Frederick Ensminger of nearly the same age. This 2nd George Frederick (2 Dec 1775-30 Aug 1842) is the son of John George Ensminger (1744-1815) and grandson of Peter Ensminger (1694-1739). Nicholas (1699-1786) and Peter (1694-1739) are brothers. The two George Fredericks are 2nd cousins.

Your George Franklin lived as you say in Harrison, Marion Co., VA (now WV). The other George Franklin was also born in Pennsylvania and moved to Portage, Hancock Co., OH where he died.

Please look at my tree, Ensminger-Reusser-Barfuss for more information on the Ensminger family. I was unaware of George's daughters Catherine and Mahala so I need to add and research them. My tree is uncertain about the names of the wives of both Georges so I need to clear that up.

Just wanted to post this photo to obtain any information anyone may have about it. The gentleman at the far right is probably Rowland Stephens from Robeson County, North Carolina.

The store front has a prominent sign with the name "Ensminger".

Thought the Ensminger family may recognize it or be interested in it. Please post if you have any info on this photo.

Thanks

William,
I happened upon your post by chance today (12/12/2011). My grandfather, Frédéric Emile Ensminger, migrated to Ecuador from France where he was offered a commission, by General José Eloy Alfaro Delgado, as Colonel and instructor to the Ecuadorian army. My grandfather was exiled and made his way to Chile then Panama. He fathered three sons and four daughters. My aunt, Blossom Ensminger married Angelo Olivero and lived in Brooklyn, NY. My aunt and uncle had three children, Francis, Angelo Jr., and Brenda. There are too many connectors for your query to be coincidental.

Awaiting your reply, Ted.

Upon study of the Ensminger Family book, I have been able to identify George Ensminger of Harrison/Marion County WV as the George Frederick Ensminger (b. 1775) in that book. George Frederick Ensminger has a birth record in Schaefferstown Lutheran Church which gives his birthdate and parents names:

January 23, 1775
Ensiminger, George Frederick
Parents: John Nicholas and Cath. Ensiminger
Sponsors: George and Anna Angelina Stroh
From the Schaefferstown Lutheran Church Book Pages 91 - 93Taken From the History of Schaefferstown, A.S. Brendle Esq., Dispatch Publishing Company, York Pa, 1901

Further research needs to be done to consolidate this finding, but based on naming patterns and migration patterns it is likely that this is correct. I am descended through their daughter Mahala Ensminger who married John Bock in Marion County VA(WV). I would love to hear from others who come through this George & Margaret Ensminger line.

George & Margaret Ensminger Harrison/Marion Co. WV

I have made some progress in identifying my Ensminger family of Harrison & Marion Counties WV. I thought I would share this information in case it may be helpful to future researchers:

George Ensminger (b. 1770-1780, d. aft. 1840 Harrison, VA/WV) married Margaret [some researchers identify her maiden name as Albert or Alport] before 1805 in PA.

They had the following children:
1) Catherine Ensminger b. abt. 1805 PA m. Jacob Baker 13 Dec 1820 [George acts as witness] d. 1869 Marion, WV
2) Michael Ensminger b. abt. 1805 PA m. Nancy E. Davis 18 Nov 1826 Harrison, WV, d. Oct 1870 Marion, WV
3) George Ensminger Jr. b. 9 Jan 1813 Harrison, VA(WV), m. Margaret LNU bef. 1838 VA(WV), d. 16 May 1882 Marion, WV
4) Mahala Ensminger b. abt. 1814 Harrison, VA(WV), m. John Bock 14 Oct 1845 Marion, VA(WV)

Census data suggests two more children were born to them (a daughter and son) who have yet to be identified.

1820 Federal Census, George is found in Harrison, VA
He has 2 m under 10, 1 m 10-16, 1 m 26-45, 2 f under 10, 1 f 26-45, 1 person engaged in agriculture

1830 Federal Census, George is found in Western District, Harrison, VA
He has 1 m 10-15, 1 m 15-20, 1 m 50-59, 1 f 40-49. It says that one of the people is blind.

1840 Federal Census, George is found in Harrison, VA
His is 60-69 with a wife 50-59, with no children at home
He is living next door to son, Michael

I cannot find George or Margaret Ensminger in the 1850 Federal Census in either Harrison, or Marion Counties. The identified children were all living in Marion County at this time. Marion County was created from Harrison County in 1842, so they had probably not moved.

1860 Federal Census, Margaret Ensminger is living with her daughter and son-in-law (John & Mahala Bock) in Marion County, VA(WV). She is 70 years old and born in PA.

Both George's and Michael's death certificates identify their parents as George and Margaret Ensminger.

If anyone is related to this family, I would love to hear from you and share our research.

Nancy,We did indeed make our trip to Europe. We found Insming, and followed the trail of the Ensmingers from Insming to Diemeringen, Waldhambach and Mattstall, all in France. We also visited a church in Duehren, Germany, where the grandparents of another branch of my husband's family were married in 1619, a castle where one was born, an Abbey where one lived for 20 years as the prelate. Then, in Switzerland, we saw the sword of another ancestor, a national War Hero, and had a chance to visit the private family museum maintained in his honor. It was truly an amazing trip filled with wonder, beauty and surprise every day.

You say that your grandfather was from Annville, which Ensminger was her? Do you have any photos?

I'm sure you have made your trip by now, and I would love to hear about it. My grandfather was from Anville, PA. My sisters and my brothers have all travelled to Insming in France...most of us twice. We had a wonderful visit there. We connected with the Mayor of the town, and the townspeople could not have been more hospitable. The Mayor, his wife, and son have since come to visit us in Nashville, TN. I know it has been several months, but I hope to hear from you about your trip.

I found David Ensminger in Berkeley County VA(WV) for the 1810 Federal Census. He and a possible brother were living there in the early 1800s. I found marriage records for each:

David Ensminger married Hannah Stripe on 29 Mar 1810, in Berkeley County VA/WV.

Christian Ensminger married Martha Harmison on 14 Dec 1812 in Berkeley County VA/WV.

Is anybody familiar with this branch of the Ensminger family. I don't think I'm directly related to them, but I have been searching for the Ensmingers of Harrison County VA(WV) from the early 1800s, whom I do descend from, and chanced upon them.

Have a great trip, I have been to Strasbourg, Insming,Sarre-Union, Diemeringen, Waldhambach,Durstel, La Petite Pierre and surrounding villages. I did not go to Mattstall or Langensoultzbach due to time, but someday.
Are you flying into Paris? a pleasant train ride gets you into Strasbourg about noon, The Cathedral is where I stayed, across from the Cathedral of Strasbourg. Car rental to the Alsatian country side or a train will take you to Diemeringen. about a 45 min. ride, food everywhere, love the tarte flambee, choucroute, etc. and beer and gewurztraminer, and marvelous breads and pastries.

My husband, an Ensminger from Annville, Pennsylvania, and I will be traveling in France this summer. We plan to rent a car and explore the Alsace region, driving to some of the small villages from where the Ensmingers immigrated in 1733. Some of the stops might include: Insming, Diemeringen and Mattstall. We don't expect outstanding sights, just want to make a connection to the past. Has anyone explored this region? Have any advice or suggestions?

My grandmother Mary Ensminger Nugent was born in Somonauk DeKalb County Illinois in 1904. She had two brothers Roy & George Ensminger. I believe George was born in Illinois, but I'm not sure about Roy. Their parents were originally from PA. My understanding is that my great grandfather John Ensminger moved to Illinois to obtain farm land. Maybe this info will help you. I just started researhing my roots last summer. I found a 2nd Cousin in CA last year on my father's side (Nugent)I love digging up roots.
Sincerely, Joanne Nugent Duncan

That's such a kind offer. I appreciate it very much. I hope that adding details might make the task easier for you. Here is all I know about my Mahala Ensminger.

Born about 1814 in Virginia (probably West Virginia), married John Bock 14 Oc 1845 in Marion County (West) Virginia, died after 1870 Census probably in Marion County WV.

There is a George Ensminger who shows up in the Harrison County (West)Virginia Census in 1830 (parts of Harrison later become Marion County). He has no daughters the right age to be Mahala, but he is the only Ensminger who lives anywhere near where she must have met her husband.

There is a Margaret Engminger, seventy years old (so born about 1790), living with Mahala and her husband in the 1860 Census for Marian County (West) Virginia.

It is possible that these are her parents, but I have no way of knowing for certain at this point.

Thank you again for your offer. Anything you find about Ensmingers who end up in WV would be extremely helpful.

Thank you. This has been very helpful. This tells me that Jacob's Mahala is not my Mahala of West Virginia.

There is another possibility that I've discovered, a George Ensminger who lived in Harrison County, later Marion County, (West) Virginia for the 1830 and 1840 Census. There is a young Michael Ensminger who lives nearby. Later, a young George Ensminger appears in that area. These are probably sons. Are you familiar with this family? Is it possible that George's wife may have been named Margaret? There is a Margaret Ensminger who is living with my Mahala in 1860 for the Census.

I have extensive info on this line but I do not know the name of Jacob's wife. All three daughters were born in Pennsylvana. Mary moved to OH, married Nathan Riley and had 4 kids. Catharine moved to Ohio, married James Smith, later moved to IL, and had 11 kids. Mahala moved to OH, married Martin Wareham, and had 12 kids - the oldest went by Warehime, the others by Wareham.

Jacob's father, Nicholas Jr, was a brother of my ancestor, John Ludwig. Both were children of Nicholas born 1699. If you want more info I have some that may help you.

I am interested in finding out as much as I can about Jacob Ensminger b. 1766 in Cocalico, Lancaster, PA, and his family. I understand that his parents were probably John Nicholas Ensminger b. abt 1723 PA and Catherine Crow b. abt 1740 PA. His children may include:
Mary b. abt 1799
Catherine b. abt 1801
Mahala b. abt 1804

I'm wondering if anyone knows where these children were born? Who was his wife? Is it possible that the Mahala listed on the Family Search site as b. abt 1804 could be my gggGrandmother Mahala Ensminger who was born in (West) Virginia? I'd appreciate any information that would help.
Thanks.

I'm trying to track down the line that my gggGrandmother, Mahala Ensminger b. abt 1814 (W)VA, comes through. I know that she married and lived in Marion County (originally part of Harrison County), West Virginia, with her husband John Bock and family. In the 1860 Census, there is a Margaret Ensminger (age 70, so b. abt 1790) living with them, who is probably Mahala's mother.

I have found three Ensminger males who lived in (West) Virginia at the time that Mahala was born:

David b. abt 1788 PA
Henry b. abt 1782 PA
George b. abt 1775 PA

The last of these (George) showed no daughters in the Census Records the right age, but may still be related somehow since he's the only one who stays in Marion County. David and Henry each had three daughters in the right age range to be Mahala. Does anyone know anything about these families? Did any of them have a daughter named Mahala? Did any of them have a wife named Margaret who may have been visiting, or living with her daughter? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

"Sophia" has me baffled, too. While I can't answer your question, I can tell you that George M. Lenhart and Jane Hamel had 4 daughters, orphaned between 1840-1850. Eliza M. Lenhart and Maxa A. Lenhart, the younger children, lived with their maternal grandmother Margaret Hamel. Sarah and Samarimus lived with their paternal grandmother Eliza and her 2nd husband Andrew Ensminger. Eliza and Andrew married 27 Feb. 1827. Unless the census taker was so confused that he recorded the name "Eliza" as "Sophia," Eliza died betw 1860-1870. Btw, the Maxa A. Lenhart named above was apparently named for her aunt, Maxa A. Lenhart who married James McLean. Of George's and Jane's 4 daughters, only Eliza married and had children. Neither of those children married.

Did you ever get information on the children of George Ensminger born Feb 6, 1813? George is my great grandfather. I have the names of his children and some of their descendants.
