Elmer M. Enstrom, Jr., 87, passed away on March 5, 2003 in Poway. He was born September 27, 1915 in Jamestown, NY and came to California in the early 20's where he settled with his family in Pasadena. He graduated from Pasadena Junior College in 1936 and Pasadena Business College in 1938, working as a janitor for the latter for his tuition. He clerked for the Pasadena Corporation before marrying Klea, October 24,1940. In December 1940 he entered the federal justice system, living in Rosemead with his wife and their children until they came to San Diego County in 1954 where he was assigned as the chief deputy federal court clerk in San Diego. Elmer became a lawyer in 1957, one of the last in California to study the Lincoln way, without going to law school, as a court clerk for various federal judges. He was appointed Assistant US Attorney in San Diego in 1959, becoming Assistant in Charge in 1962, serving five and one-half years during which he handled many trials and appeals for the United States. He served as United States Commissioner (1964-66), as Director of the San Diego Legal Aid Society (1966-69) and as United States Magistrate from 1969 until his retirement in 1973. Thereafter, he practiced public interest law, including pro bono representation of students in the San Diego city schools opposed to racial school assignments. He directed the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program during its first year of operation 1983. Elmer also served as the Chairman of the Julian Area Planning , Group for a few years after it was first formed in 1971 and at various times as Secretary of the Julian Lions club. He felt greatly honored to be the Grand Marshal of the Julian High School Homecoming for 1987-88. He was active in children's scouting and sports programs while his sons and daughter were young and, later, in the Julian programs, including coaching.
Elmer is survived by his wife of 63 years, Klea, son, James, an epidemiologist who lives with his wife, Marta, in Los Angeles, son, Robert, a writer, who lives in Julian, daughter, Mary Ann who lives with her husband, David Grossman, and grandson, Daniel, in Julian.
Graveside services were held at the Haven of Rest Cemetery, Julian, on Monday, March 10, 2003 at l:00pm. Family would request that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to Julian Lions Scholarship Fund.
