April 4, 2000, from National Historic Register for Rumsey Hall [Entler Hotel]:
There were two hotels in town run by the Entlers in the early 1800's. Joseph's was called the Great Western; brother Daniel's bore the family name since it incorporated the old Entler property, built in the 1780's, the first unit of the six sectioned Entler Hotel Property. The fact is not surprising, since their grandfather, Philip Adam Entler, Sr., had been a butcher and innkeeper in York, Pennsylvania, before coming to Shepherdstown. The elder Philip had brought with him from Germany in 1737 a certificate stating that in 1736 he had completed his full three years as an apprentice to Johannes Entler, butcher.

Karen,
It's pretty amazing what you can find searching on the Internet, isn't it?
Unfortunately, I don't really know a great deal about the Bee Line March, but I'll tell you what I do know. I learned about it because the brother of one of my Tullis ancestors participated in the march. That was an Aaron Tullis. I have a book, "Tullis and Allied Families" which describes his service in the Revolutionary War. It references several other sources, including the one you mentioned, but I don't have any of them. Here's some of the info from "Tullis and Allied Families":
"The Berkeley Rifles were a company made up of volunteers, one of whom was Aaron Tullis. The company was commanded by Capt Hugh Stephenson and consisted of 98 hand-picked marksmen. On July 17, 1775, the 98 volunteers from the panhandle counties started their long march to Boston, 600 miles away. The march has since become known as the Bee-line March and was used as an example of what men could do under the proper inspiration and leadership. The entire company arrived near Boston and were cordially welcomed by General George Washington. This occurred on August 11th, twenty-five days to cover 600 miles!"
"A bronze marker is now mounted on a background of two enormous hewed stones located on W. VA route 48 one-half mile south of the junctions of routes 45 and 48. The marker lists the names of the 15 officers of the Berkeley Rifles and other interesting information about the now-famous Bee-line March. The marker was erected by the Pack Horse Ford Chapter of the D.A.R. Another marker on U.S. highway 11 in Martinsburg, WV, reads as follows: 'The Berkeley Riflemen from Eastern Panhandle counties under Capt. Hugh Stephenson were first southern troops to join Washington in 1775 at Boston. In a 'bee line' from Morgan's Spring they marched 600 miles in 26 days"
The book also includes an extensive write-up of Aaron Tullis' account of his War service which he provided when later applying for a pension. And it provides some quotes from an article by Mabel Henshaw Gardiner and Ann Henshaw Gardiner in the "Chronicles of Old Berkeley" (1938, p. 19) in which they describe the Bee Line March. Two companies are mentioned: Capt Hugh Stephenson's and Capt Daniel Morgan's.
Let me know if any more of this information in "Tullis and Allied Families" would be useful to you. I'd be glad to make a copy of the relevant pages for you.
